Effect Of Microstructure And Alloying Elements On The Resistance Of Fastener Grade Steels To Hydrogen Assisted Cracking , Nicholas E. Nanninga
Effect Of Microstructure And Alloying Elements On The Resistance Of Fastener Grade Steels To Hydrogen Assisted Cracking , Nicholas E. Nanninga
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Fastener grade steels with varying alloy contents and heat treatments were employed to measure changes in resistance to hydrogen assisted cracking. The testing procedure compared notched tension specimens fractured in air to threshold stress values obtained during hydrogen charging, utilizing a rising step load procedure. Bainitic structures improved resistance by 10-20% compared to tempered martensite structures. Dual phase steels with a tempered martensite matrix and 20% ferrite were more susceptible and notch sensitive. High strength, fully pearlitic structures showed an improvement in resistance. Carbon content, per se, had no effect on the resistance of steel to hydrogen assisted cracking. Chromium …
New Media Reading Strategy, Cheryl E. Ball
New Media Reading Strategy, Cheryl E. Ball
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
This dissertation addresses the need for a strategy that will help readers new to new media texts interpret such texts. While scholars in multimodal and new media theory posit rubrics that offer ways to understand how designers use the materialities and media found in overtly designed, new media texts (see, e.g,, Wysocki, 2004a), these strategies do not account for how readers have to make meaning from those texts. In this dissertation, I discuss how these theories, such as Lev Manovich’s (2001) five principles for determining the new media potential of texts and Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen’s (2001) four …

Through The Back Door : Melungeon Literacies And 21st Century Technologies, Katherine G. Vande Brake
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The Melungeons, a minority recognized in Southern Appalachia where they settled in the early 1800s, have mixed heritage—European, Mediterranean, Native American, and Sub-Saharan African. Their dark skin and distinctive features have marked them and been the cause of racial persecution both by custom and by law in Appalachia for two centuries. Their marginalization has led to an insider mentality, which I call a “literacy” of Melungeon-ness that affects every facet of their lives.
Just a century ago, while specialized practices such as farming, preserving food, hunting, gathering, and distilling insured survival in the unforgiving mountain environment, few Melungeons could read …
Effectiveness Of A Nondestructive Evaluation Technique For Assessing Standing Timber Quality, Crystal L. Pilon
Effectiveness Of A Nondestructive Evaluation Technique For Assessing Standing Timber Quality, Crystal L. Pilon
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The research presented in this thesis was conducted to further the development of the stress wave method of nondestructively assessing the quality of wood in standing trees. The specific objective of this research was to examine, in the field, use of two stress wave nondestructive assessment techniques.
The first technique examined utilizes a laboratory-built measurement system consisting of commercially available accelerometers and a digital storage oscilloscope. The second technique uses a commercially available tool that incorporates several technologies to determine speed of stress wave propagation in standing trees.
Field measurements using both techniques were conducted on sixty red pine trees …
Effects Of A Dependent Group Contingency On The Verbal Interactions Of Middle School Students With Emotional Disturbance, S. Hansen, Benjamin Lignugaris / Kraft
Effects Of A Dependent Group Contingency On The Verbal Interactions Of Middle School Students With Emotional Disturbance, S. Hansen, Benjamin Lignugaris / Kraft
Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications
This study examined the effects of a dependent group contingency to increase positive verbal interactions among nine middle school-aged males in a self-contained classroom. Prior to implementing the group contingency, the students received social skills instruction. A withdrawal experimental design was then used to evaluate the effects of the dependent group contingency. Students' positive verbal interactions increased and negative verbal interactions decreased with the implementation of the dependent group contingency. When the group contingency was faded, positive and negative interaction levels were maintained. The results are discussed in terms of developing positive interaction skills among youth with emotional disturbance and …

Career Expectations Vs. Experiences: The Case Of Academic Women, Sonia Goltz
Career Expectations Vs. Experiences: The Case Of Academic Women, Sonia Goltz
College of Business Publications
This qualitative study explored how women who filed complaints against their universities initially formed expectations when they joined their universities and how they later discovered their expectations were not met. Interviews suggested that as applicants the women assessed: 1) whether the university would provide an environment that would foster the achievement of their goals; 2) whether the university would reward their efforts and success; and 3) whether their individual characteristics matched the university's needs. They also assumed that the university would be fair. Upon entering their universities, the women expected to exchange their abilities and hard work for the organization's …

Establishing An Entertainment Engineering Curriculum, Robert F. Boehm, Joe Aldridge, Brackley Frayer
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
A new, multidisciplinary program in Entertainment Engineering and Design is being established at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The name of the program could be defined in a number of ways because few programs of this type exist and the field is so broad. Our emphasis is on the application of technology to enhance the entertainment value of live shows and rides. Steps being taken to establish this program are outlined, starting with an undergraduate minor and moving to an undergraduate major. The role of entertainment-based businesses in the development of this new program is also described.

Getting Your Name Out There: Traveling Acting Companies And Royal And Aristocratic Prestige In Tudor England, James H. Forse
Getting Your Name Out There: Traveling Acting Companies And Royal And Aristocratic Prestige In Tudor England, James H. Forse
Quidditas
Records published to date concerning early English drama suggest that in the first third of the sixteenth century touring activity by municipal, amateur acting companies exceeded that of royal and aristocratic troupes. But after about 1535, the religious, social, and economic policies of Henry VIII, and Edward VI, severely limited locally based performances. At the same time tours by royal acting troupes substantially increased. Yet of all the Tudors, it was Elizabeth who seems to have realized the potential of her acting troupe representing the monarch's presence throughout the kingdom. From the beginning of her reign the Queen’s Men appeared …
Building Zion: The Latter-Day Saint Legacy Of Urban Planning, Craig D. Galli
Building Zion: The Latter-Day Saint Legacy Of Urban Planning, Craig D. Galli
BYU Studies
As with the founding of Plymouth Colony, distinctive historical circumstances and theological beliefs converged to motivate early Latter-day Saint community builders. While the historic roots of Salt Lake City are well known to virtually every grade school student in Utah and to Church members around the world, aspects of our remarkable legacy of urban and transportation planning remain obscure. The physical design and community values underlying early attempts to build Zion provide useful perspective and inspiration as today's community leaders now grapple with managing urban growth along Utah's Wasatch Front (from Brigham City to Nephi and Grantsville to Kamas) and …
Freedom, Compulsion, Compliance And Mystery: Reflections On The Duty Not To Enforce A Promise, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw
Freedom, Compulsion, Compliance And Mystery: Reflections On The Duty Not To Enforce A Promise, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
In this essay, I suggest the difference between the law of consensual relationships (i.e., contracts) and the morality of those relationships is one of compulsion and freedom. In the former, we find ourselves being compelled by, or compliant with, a rule some distance removed from the basic norm; in the latter we find ourselves in touch, constantly and sometimes in the face of more visceral obligatory rules, with a far deeper and more fundamental (transcendental) sense of fairness. Moral decisions are the ones made without any threat of compulsion from the law. The clearest example in commercial relationship of a …

People V. Cahill: Domestic Violence And The Death Penalty Debate In New York, Russell G. Murphy
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
This article proposes changes in the 1994 State of New York death penalty statute designed to deal with the reversal of the capital sentence in the 2003 NY Court of Appeals decision in People v. Cahill. In 1998, the defendant Jeff Cahill brutally attacked his wife with an aluminum baseball bat during a domestic quarrel. Six months later Mr. Cahill snuck into his wife's hospital room, where she was continuing her recovery from the earlier attack, and poisoned her to death with stolen potassium cyanide. Jeff Cahill's death sentence was reversed when the Court of Appeals found the evidence at …
Indigenous Peoples And Intellectual Property, Stephen M. Mcjohn, Lorie Graham
Indigenous Peoples And Intellectual Property, Stephen M. Mcjohn, Lorie Graham
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
This paper, following on Michael F. Brown's Who Owns Native Culture?, suggests that intellectual property law, negotiation, and human rights precepts can work together to address indigenous claims to heritage protection. Granting intellectual property rights in such spheres as traditional knowledge and folklore does not threaten the public domain in the same way that expansion of intellectual property rights in more commercial spheres does. It is not so much a question of the public domain versus corporate and indigenous interests, as it is a question of the impact corporate interests have had on the indigenous claims. Indeed indigenous peoples' claims …

The Impact Of Cultural Diversity On Web Site Design, Jack Cook, Mike Finlayson

Close your eyes. Envision a succulent two-inch slab of dripping-rare prime rib. Is your stomach rumbling, your appetite peaked, or are you offended since your fundamental belief system precludes harming animals? A single image or idea can create many diferent feelings or interpretations. Consider the diversity within your own organization, campus, or community. Does everyone agree on what is appropriate, acceptable, appetizing, or attractive? An image pleasing to one group of people may alienate or even seriously offend many others. Something as simple as color may elicit dramatically different mental images. For example, in the U.S., white is generally associated …
The Challenge Of Health Care Delivery In Connecticut, Joanne M. Bortone, Michael Emery, Patricia W. Walker
The Challenge Of Health Care Delivery In Connecticut, Joanne M. Bortone, Michael Emery, Patricia W. Walker
Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications
The challenge of health care is explored by Jody Bortone, Michael J. Emery, and Patricia W. Walker in chapter six of Public Policy in Connecticut. They focus particularly on the shortage of health care professionals in the Connecticut workforce, the increasing difficulty Connecticut residents face with respect to accessing and receiving appropriate health care services, and the rising costs associated with the many dimensions of health care. The authors conclude their essay with a very specific set of remedial measures designed to resolve the disturbing trends in the state's health care system.
"Just Click Here": A Brief Glance At Absurd Electronic Contracts And The Law Failing To Protect Consumers, Mike Beishuizen
"Just Click Here": A Brief Glance At Absurd Electronic Contracts And The Law Failing To Protect Consumers, Mike Beishuizen
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
As e-commerce explodes around the world, consumers’ rights have been left behind. Before the completion of virtually every transaction on the Internet, the onus is placed on consumers to read and agree to an onslaught of terms and conditions. Often hidden in the middle of this extremely lengthy list of terms are massive exemption and limitation of liability clauses that deny consumers most if not all of their rights as “equal” trading partners. The common law principle that all onerous clauses in a contract need to be brought to the attention of the consumer for them to be binding seems …
Disorder In The Court: The Use Of Psychiatric Testimony In The Prediction Of Dangerousness, Matthew Lafond
Disorder In The Court: The Use Of Psychiatric Testimony In The Prediction Of Dangerousness, Matthew Lafond
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
Preventive detention measures in Canada were implemented in order to protect us from the most dangerous individuals in society. The Dangerous Offender provisions permit the state to imprison an offender indefinitely. In order to justify such drastic action, psychiatric assessments are conducted in an attempt to determine who, among the “worst” offenders, would be most likely to commit a dangerous offence in the future. This paper will review the dangerous offender system in Canada, and in that context, critically reconsider the ability of mental health professionals to predict the risk of future dangerousness. Despite widespread disagreement concerning evaluation methods and …

Gaps, Issues, And Prospects: International Law And The Protection Of Underwater Cultural Heritage, Lowell B. Bautista
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
The protection and preservation of underwater cultural heritage is becoming an increasingly important issue as technologies develop which allow for its exploitation. The UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage (“UCH Convention”) is an important step in the international regulation of this resource. This paper examines the theoretical and historical antecedents of the UCH Convention, and outlines the Convention’s most significant provisions. Specifically, this paper examines how the UCH Convention protects underwater cultural heritage in six areas: internal waters, the territorial sea, the contiguous zone, the exclusive economic zone, the continental shelf, and the Area. This paper then …
Newfound Religion: Term 17(3) Of The Newfoundland Act And Its Challenge To The Current Discourse On Freedom Of Religion In The Public Sphere, Mark Heerema
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
Underlying the dominant legal and theoretical approaches to the freedom of religion in the public sphere is a discourse which assumes that religion is a contestable or mutable aspect of public life. As a result of this assumption, our current approach holds that the role of religion may be altered according to the perceived benefits and burdens of its presence. The resulting consensus predominately prefers the absence of religion in the public space where government regulation exists. By amending its constitutional terms of union with Canada to permit religious observances in their public school system, Newfoundland and Labrador has protected …
Bringing Meaning To First Nations Consultation In British Columbia Salmon Aquaculture Industry, Mark Rappaport
Bringing Meaning To First Nations Consultation In British Columbia Salmon Aquaculture Industry, Mark Rappaport
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
One aspect of the legal relationship between the Crown and Aboriginal peoples is the duty to consult. This duty is part of the overall fiduciary duty that the Crown owes towards Aboriginal people. The recent Supreme Court of Canada decision of Haida v. British Columbia brings the duty to consult info focus specifically in the context of salmon aquaculture in British Columbia. Difficulties arise with regards to the precise content of the duty to consult: is it merely procedural in nature, or do First Nations have a substantive right to consultation? The extent of consultation and accommodation will be determined …
Investigating Alternatives To Rights: The Hungarian Constitutional Court And The Protection Of A Minimum Level Of Assistance, Graham Reynolds
Investigating Alternatives To Rights: The Hungarian Constitutional Court And The Protection Of A Minimum Level Of Assistance, Graham Reynolds
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
In recent years, in the attempt to achieve “fiscal responsibility”, governments have decreased social assistance rates, reduced program eligibility, and terminated social services. As a result, more and more individuals have slipped into poverty. In order to prevent governments from cutting these services to below subsistence levels, this paper proposes that Canada take steps to achieve constitutional protection of a minimum level of assistance. The concept of a constitutionally protected minimum level of assistance has been considered. Most recently, advocates focused their efforts on achieving constitutional protection through the language of rights. However, both through the legislature and the judiciary, …
