Assessing Misidentification Potential When Using Percent Developmental Delay As An Early Intervention Eligibility Criterion, Allison Gladfelter, Sarah Thomas, Christine Nguyen, Sarah O'Connor
CISLL Publications
Purpose:
Several states' early intervention (EI) eligibility criteria require children to show developmental delay based on age-equivalent (AE) scores. Unfortunately, the use of AE scores to determine eligibility is not empirically supported because they do not account for the normal variability of scores found within the general population. The purpose of this project was to explore the likelihood of eligibility misidentifications based on AE scores rather than using standard scores that incorporate normal population variability.Method:
Scoring tables from six standardized assessments commonly used for determining EI eligibility were digitally converted and analyzed using Python code. This code compared all …Visdb 20: A Manually Curated Resource Of Viral Integration Sites And Their Regulatory Maps In Human Diseases, Citu Citu, Ajeet Singh, Xinyi Liu, Mounika Ashannagari, Rinki Ratnapriya, Zhongming Zhao

The integration of viral sequence into the human genome plays critical role in the onset of various diseases, especially cancers. To facilitate systematic analysis of these events, we present VISDB 2.0, an expanded and updated database of human viral integration sites (VISs). The current release contains more than 270,000 manually curated VISs derived from 209 peer-reviewed publications, covering 11 viruses, including four retroviruses and seven DNA viruses. This represents a 3.5-fold increase in VIS entries compared with the previous version. Each VIS record includes standardized genomic coordinates and annotations describing local genomic context, CpG islands, repetitive elements, chromosomal fragile sites, …

Beyond Alumni Dollars: Developing Engagement With Graduate Alumni, Kyra J. Snyder
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alumni engagement plays an increasingly important role in supporting graduate program mission, reputation, and long-term sustainability. Despite its recognized value, limited research examines alumni engagement within graduate level programs from a practitioner perspective. The purpose of this study was to examine perceptions of alumni engagement among alumni, faculty, and staff within the University of South Florida (USF) Physician Assistant Program and to identify any needs or gaps in current engagement opportunities. This study employed a survey-based research design to gather data from two stakeholder groups from the USF PA Program: alumni and faculty/staff. A review of program records provided data …

This paper is part of a larger clinical practice guideline on the diagnosis and management of parapneumonic effusion and empyema in children, developed by the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. In this report, the panel provides recommendations for intrapleural fibrinolysis with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) alone over tPA and dornase alfa (DNase) in children (3 months to 18 years) with complicated parapneumonic effusion and empyema. The panel's recommendations are based upon evidence derived from systematic literature reviews and adhere to a standardized methodology for rating the certainty of evidence and strength of recommendation according …

Multimodal Imaging Reveals A Lysosomal Drug Reservoir That Drives Heterogeneous Distribution Of Parp Inhibitors, Carmen R Moncayo, Lauren Pendergast, Priyanka Verma, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
For all drugs, effective target engagement requires sufficient intracellular concentrations of drug to be reached, but whether tumour heterogeneity impacts drug distribution and efficacy is poorly studied. Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors have transformed treatment opportunities for women with high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma, but resistance remains a clinical hurdle in this highly heterogeneous tumour type. Here, we present a patient-derived explant multi-modal imaging pipeline, which demonstrates that cell-intrinsic PARP inhibitor accumulation is highly variable, both between patients and within tumours. Spatial transcriptomics reveals enrichment of apoptotic and lysosomal signatures in high-drug regions. Rucaparib, an intrinsically fluorescent PARP inhibitor, accumulates heterogeneously …

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services created a waiver to reimburse telemedicine services. It is important to understand factors that facilitate incorporation of telemedicine into ongoing cardiovascular practice.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of telemedicine and office visits delivered by cardiologists between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023, for Medicare beneficiaries. We calculated the adjusted incidence rate ratio (aIRR) of telemedicine visits, representing the proportion of a physician's visits delivered by telemedicine, to identify factors associated with telemedicine use.
RESULTS: There were 23 334 physicians in our cohort; they were predominantly …

BACKGROUND: Supraventricular tachycardia affects many critically ill patients. Dexmedetomidine, a commonly used sedative, has sympatholytic and vagotonic effects that may alter atrioventricular nodal conduction and contribute to SVT. We aim to determine the association between dexmedetomidine exposure and clinically significant supraventricular tachycardia in a heterogeneous cohort of mechanically ventilated, critically ill adults. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included critically ill patients from 11 hospitals admitted between July 2018 and October 2022, who were intubated within 48 h of admission. The primary exposure was intravenous dexmedetomidine. The primary outcome was occurrence of clinically significant supraventricular tachycardia, defined as heart rate > 100 …

Transformation of polycythemia vera (PV) into post-polycythemic myelofibrosis (MF) and subsequently acute myeloid leukemia (AML) represents one of the most aggressive trajectories among myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Post-MPN AML carries a median survival of approximately six months, particularly among older adults with adverse cytogenetics. We report the case of a 73-year-old man with JAK2-positive PV diagnosed in 2020 who progressed to MF in 2024 and developed AML later that year. Cytogenetic analysis revealed a KMT2A (11q23) rearrangement with KMT2A::ELL fusion, a finding rarely described in secondary AML arising from MPNs. Due to advanced age, transfusion dependence, and significant cardiovascular comorbidities, the …

Regression Dressed As Reform: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita And The Shifting Contours Of Political Speech, Anushka Singh
National Law School of India Review
This paper examines the shifting contours of criminal law in relation to political speech, with a focus on Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). It advances three arguments. First, the decolonising narrative behind deleting sedition glosses over substantive continuities between colonial and post-colonial periods, with Section 152 BNS refashioning the colonial-era bifurcation between ‘sedition’ and ‘sedition-like’ activity. The BNS provision represents a backslide in the way it converges the various legal and political connotations of sedition from colonial to contemporary times, creating a new criminal category constructed through popular political-extra-legal discourses. Second, Section 152 BNS borrows from the …

Ignazio Visco served as deputy director general (the equivalent of deputy governor) of the Bank of Italy during the Global Financial Crisis of 2007–09 (GFC) and as governor during the European Sovereign Debt Crisis in 2011 (SDC). During his multidecade tenure at the bank, he held several positions and served under nine prime ministers before stepping down in 2023. Although Italy had the third-largest economy in the eurozone, its banking sector had little exposure to mortgages, which resulted in its being somewhat less impacted by the GFC than other countries. However, the SDC had a severe impact. With the assistance …

Masaaki Shirakawa became governor of the Bank of Japan (BOJ) in 2008, after a long tenure at the central bank. His career spanned a series of significant crisis events in Japan’s economic history, including the economic boom in the 1980s, which was followed by a period of stagnation characterized by low GDP growth, multiple recessions, and persistent deflation. Shirakawa led the BOJ’s response during the Global Financial Crisis of 2007–09 (GFC). He also initiated the central bank’s contingency plan in response to the 2011 tsunami, earthquake, and Fukushima nuclear disaster before stepping down near the end of his term in …

Black Swans And Financial Stability: A Framework For Building Resilience, Daniel J. Barth, Stacey L. Schreft
Black Swans And Financial Stability: A Framework For Building Resilience, Daniel J. Barth, Stacey L. Schreft
Journal of Financial Crises
This article refines the concept of black swans, typically described as highly unlikely and catastrophic events, to be internally consistent. It explores features of the financial system that prevent the eradication of black swans. The main implication is the need to enhance the financial system’s resilience to withstand unforeseen events rather than focus on past crises. The article introduces a “resilience principle” for designing official-sector policies that can achieve such goals. The principle calls for policies that are adaptable, universal, and systemic. The article provides examples of policies with these features, assuming that the official sector is not better positioned …

How The Fdic Sourced Crisis-Time Fed Funding Through The Failed Banks Of 2023, Steven Kelly
Journal of Financial Crises
During the Banking Crisis of 2023, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) had to contend with the liquidity demands of the second-, third-, and fourth-largest bank failures in US history, all in a compressed timeframe. Facing uncertainty over its liquidity needs, particularly if additional banks were to fail, and optics and political challenges over accessing its standing credit lines with the Treasury—which itself was brushing against the federal debt ceiling—the FDIC relied on two creative forms of financing itself. First, the agency kept open the Federal Reserve (Fed) loans taken on by the failed banks, eschewing its standard practice of …
Settler Colonialism: A Case-Study Analysis Of Dam Infrastructure In The American West, Kassidy Haynes, Carrie Mott
Settler Colonialism: A Case-Study Analysis Of Dam Infrastructure In The American West, Kassidy Haynes, Carrie Mott
The Cardinal Edge
In 17th-century North America, a number of world powers began extensive colonial efforts to stake a claim on territories and their resources. Settler colonialism in the United States followed a distinct track to the west compared to that which occurred in the east following this initial land-grab. Because infrastructure preceded some formal, highly concentrated settlement in the western United States, this region experienced the oppression of settler colonialism in distinct manifestations. Namely, the physical imposition of construction projects such as dams established early dynamics of differential power and control between the federal government and the diverse array of …

Aristotle And The Proslavery Writings Of The Antebellum South, Ace Farris
The Cardinal Edge
This paper explores how nineteenth-century Southern intellectuals appropriated and adapted Aristotle’s ancient defense of slavery to legitimize racial slavery in the antebellum United States. Although Aristotle’s theory of “natural slavery” emerged from the social and economic conditions of classical Greece, where enslaved people constituted essential components of the household, Southern thinkers tailored his argument to justify the peculiar institution. The paper begins by outlining Aristotle’s defense of slavery in his Politics, which states that some individuals naturally lack the capacity for rational deliberation, thereby benefiting from enslavement. Then, it traces how the American South’s investment in classical education allowed …

Fear And Freedom: California Gay Bars In The 1960s, Bridget L. Kelley
The Cardinal Edge
This article explores the interactions between gay bars, queer people, and police in California in the 1960s. The gay bar served as both a place of community and safety while paradoxically being a site of oppression suffered at the hands of law enforcement. These conflicting experiences made gay bars sites of both fear and freedom. Arrest practices, plain clothes policing, raid practices, and monetary manipulation made the gay bar a space of danger. However, the resistance of queer patrons against police brutality made it a space where one could express their queerness and fight for change.

Making A Victim: The Quest To Define Austria In A Cold War Context, Katherine E. White
The Cardinal Edge
When the Second World War concluded, the Allied Powers were left with the complicated question of how to deal with the territories that they had occupied on their march to Berlin. Of all the territories conquered by Germany under Nazi rule, Austria proved to be one of the most difficult and polarizing to define. It towed the line between victim and accomplice, having endorsed its own annexation to Germany in 1938. For ten years after the war’s end, the Allied Powers occupied Austria, locked in a stalemate over the country’s fate. This paper examines how the various occupying powers, in …

The Kennedy Familys' Influence On The Passage Of The Immigration And Nationality Act Of 1965, Jillian Wallshield
The Cardinal Edge
This paper covers the influence of the Kennedy Family on immigration policy in the United States. United States immigration legislation changed dramatically in the 1960s with the passage of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 (sometimes called the Hart-Cellar Act). This shift was caused primarily by the political work of prominent figures like John F. Kennedy, and, later, Edward Kennedy. Edward Kennedy in particular is examined through his influence on Lyndon B. Johnson, the President under which the Immigration and Nationality Act was passed. This position is supported through the examination of relevant public speeches, private telephone calls, and …

In quite a few people worldwide, there are several mental disorders that prevent the brain from operating in the “proper” way, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) being among the most common. Luckily, there are several medications that are produced and used to treat these disorders, but some medications are hard to access, and others simply don’t help the patient. Firstly, these medications take time to study and prove safe for public use, though in some cases time is not readily available. In other cases, these medications are going through shortages and becoming increasingly difficult for patients to access …
Determination Of Trace Amounts Of Pb2+ And Cu2+ Ions In The Ohio River With Anodic Stripping Voltammetry And Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy To Test Water Contamination From Factories., Eliana Purcell
The Cardinal Edge
In this project, water near factories in Rubbertown, Louisville, KY were tested to see if a significant enough amount of waste is deposited in the Ohio River that the concentrations of Pb2+ and Cu2+ exceed the maximum contaminant levels the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have set in place. Waste from industrial factories may contain contaminants that have negative effects on aquatic ecosystems and even human health, so two potentially harmful metal ions were tested. The concentration of Cu2+ in water samples was detected through flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS), and the concentration …

Chronic wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, pressure sores, and venous leg ulcers, affect over 40 million individuals worldwide and are often complicated by delayed healing due to limited access to continuous monitoring. Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) is an established treatment that promotes wound healing through controlled sub-atmospheric pressure. However, conventional NPWT systems lack real-time physiological feedback and require frequent in-person follow-ups, limiting their effectiveness in remote or low-resource settings. This study presents WoundWatch, a portable, low-cost NPWT device that integrates real-time temperature, humidity, and pressure sensing with wireless data transmission via an IoT platform. The system includes a vacuum …

The nucleus has long been simplified in the field of biology, despite being an important organelle. Until recently, it has been commonly depicted as a simple sphere located at the center of a cell, responsible mainly for regulating protein synthesis. However, current research indicates that the linkers of the nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton (LINC) complexes, the pillars of nuclear architecture, play a critical role in maintaining nuclear integrity and function. These complexes interact with proteins, such as Lamins, that modulate responses to biomechanical stimuli through the regulation of gene expression. As such, when these structures are downregulated, they can contribute to …
