Ohio's Sex Offender Residency Restriction Law: Does It Protect The Health And Safety Of The State's Children Or Falsely Make People Believe So, Margaret Troia
Journal of Law and Health
The fact of the matter is that residency laws often force all registered sex offenders to pay the price for a few high-profile cases and the public's fear and beliefs regarding sex offenders is often misguided and not well-founded. Sex offender residency laws may actually increase recidivism rates while placing unjustified burdens on sex offenders and their family members. Furthermore, because these laws target stranger perpetrators, they do not prevent the majority of sex crimes committed by acquaintances or family members of the victim. This results in parents being lulled into a false sense of security that their children are …
The Canada/U.S. Dynamic Post 9/11: Maintaining Sovereignty, Balancing Security Interests And Civil Liberties In Canadian Immigration Policy-Making, Alison Forrest
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
This paper is a part of a larger research project that looks at the balancing of security interests and civil liberties in Canadian immigration policy-making post 9/11. The argument presented in this paper counters the frequently proposed assertion that Canadian policy-makers are unduly influenced by U.S. policies and politics in this area. Rather, it will be argued, Canadian sovereignty is asserted through active co-operation with the U.S. in such policies as the Smart Border Agreement, Integrated Border Enforcement Teams, and Safe Third Country Agreement. Through this active co-operation with the U.S. the Canadian Government is able to assure the U.S. …

Indoor Geo-Location And Tracking Of Mobile Autonomous Robot, Mahesh Ramamurthy
Indoor Geo-Location And Tracking Of Mobile Autonomous Robot, Mahesh Ramamurthy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The field of robotics has always been one of fascination right from the day of Terminator. Even though we still do not have robots that can actually replicate human action and intelligence, progress is being made in the right direction. Robotic applications range from defense to civilian, in public safety and fire fighting. With the increase in urban-warfare robot tracking inside buildings and in cities form a very important application. The numerous applications range from munitions tracking to replacing soldiers for reconnaissance information. Fire fighters use robots for survey of the affected area. Tracking robots has been limited to the …

Correlation Of Acoustic Emission Parameters With Weight And Velocity Of Moving Vehicles, Amar Kolgaonkar
Correlation Of Acoustic Emission Parameters With Weight And Velocity Of Moving Vehicles, Amar Kolgaonkar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The thesis is motivated by the goal of doing initial investigation and experimentation for the development of Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) system using acoustic emission phenomenon. A great deal of research is going on for measuring the weight of moving vehicles. Weigh-in-motion of commercial vehicles is essential for management of freight traffic, highway infrastructure design and maintenance, and monitoring of heavy weight vehicles. The research work presents a methodology for correlating the weight of a moving vehicle with acoustic emission parameters (such as counts and energy). Furthermore, the correlation between the speed of vehicle with the acoustic emission parameters is developed. Preliminary …
Hands Off Policy: Equal Protection And The Contact Sports Exemption Of Title Ix, Jamal Greene
Hands Off Policy: Equal Protection And The Contact Sports Exemption Of Title Ix, Jamal Greene
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
The disparity between what the Constitution permits of public schools and what Title IX permits of private ones is unquestionably stark. This Article calls this disparity into question. First, it asks under what circumstances, if any, allowance for sex discrimination in athletics may be justified under constitutional standards. Then, it considers the practical relevance of the disparity between how a school may lawfully discriminate under Title IX and how it may do so under the Equal Protection Clause. Finally, it offers a prescription for bringing into balance the gender equity messages sent by Title IX and the Constitution.

State Consumer Protection Statutes: An Alternative Approach To Solving The Problem Of Predatory Mortgage Lending, Jessica Fogel
State Consumer Protection Statutes: An Alternative Approach To Solving The Problem Of Predatory Mortgage Lending, Jessica Fogel
Seattle University Law Review
This article continues in Part II by defining predatory lending practices, identifying borrowers who are likely to face predatory lenders, and discussing the consequences of predatory lending. Next, Part III provides a background for existing federal regulation, again in reference to RESPA and TILA. Part IV discusses state legislative efforts to curb predatory lending and identifies the problems of inconsistency and federal exemptions that undermine these state statutes. Part V examines the elements of state consumer protection acts and unfair and deceptive acts or practices ("UDAP") statutes and their application to predatory practices. Part VI argues that, because consumer protection …
Crime Pays: The Role Of Prohibition And Rum Running Along Us 112 In The Transformation Of The Michigan State Police, Timothy Weber
Crime Pays: The Role Of Prohibition And Rum Running Along Us 112 In The Transformation Of The Michigan State Police, Timothy Weber
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The Michigan State Police were first organized to protect the state’s infrastructure and quell labor disputes during World War I. Structured along the lines of a paramilitary organization, the State Police quickly developed a reputation for Nativism and anti-radical agendas. By the 1930s, the force had transformed into a state wide investigation and policing agency with broad support in the population and state government. Here, archival records and police publications are used to ascertain the role of Prohibition and rum running in the force’s transformation.
Examination begins with an overview of the national movement to establish state policing agencies, and …
