Systems Development Tools And The Relationship To Project Design: Cost And Budget Implications, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan Jan 2005

Systems Development Tools And The Relationship To Project Design: Cost And Budget Implications, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

An investigation into current system development trends, including a summary of projects, platforms, and tools. The majority of projects get completed on time and within budget, but 14 percent still present problems. The choice of tools appears to be changing to represent the demand for new projects on new platforms—particularly the Internet. CASE tools are used sparingly, and Java is beginning to replace C++ in many projects. Database management systems are critical to almost all projects.

Spectacle Of Self In Medieval Romance: Pagentry, Performance, And Clothing, Crady Yerger Bobo Jan 2005

Spectacle Of Self In Medieval Romance: Pagentry, Performance, And Clothing, Crady Yerger Bobo

Honors Theses

My thesis focuses on young knights finding their identity. I concentrate on six works, The Story of the Grail, Havelok the Dane, Sir Gareth of Orkeney, Guigemar, Sir Launfal, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and how the various romancers define identity thematically. This occurs in three dififerent ways: with Perceval it is through education, Havelok and Gareth start out as kitchen boys, prove their inherent identity, and are thus self-inventing knights, and for Guigemar, Launfal, and Perceval it is about having their sexuality challenged. I also try in each chapter to give some historical background on the reason …

The Effects Of Physiological Arousal On Measures Of Upper Extremity Position Sense In Healthy Young Adults, Melissa Angelique Parker Jan 2005

The Effects Of Physiological Arousal On Measures Of Upper Extremity Position Sense In Healthy Young Adults, Melissa Angelique Parker

Honors Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of physiological arousal on the ability to perceive upper extremity position in healthy young adults. Heart rate measurements and blood pressure measurements were taken at pre-established intervals during data collection. Pre-stressor and post-stressor upper extremity trials were also recorded. Twenty participants, 12 females and 8 males, with a mean age of 22.3 (20 33) years comprised the experimental sample. Participants in the experimental sample underwent a combination of the Stroop color-word task and simple math problems to produce a state of arousal and were pre and post tested for upper …

Corticosterone Response In A Learned Helplessness Model Of Depression, Courtney M. Cartwright Jan 2005

Corticosterone Response In A Learned Helplessness Model Of Depression, Courtney M. Cartwright

Honors Theses

This purpose of this study was to quantify both behavioral and biological markers of stress (i.e. distress vocalizations, plasma corticosterone) in the chick stress-separation paradigm. In this study, chicks were isolated from companions for either 5,10,15,20,40, or 60 minutes and distress vocalizations were recorded. In addition, one group was tested in the presence of social companions for 60 minutes. Blood was collected from half of the subjects immediately following the testing period and was also collected in a no-test group to establish plasma corticosterone basal levels. Isolation produced a significant elevation in distress vocalizations and corticosterone. The pattern of distress …

A Study Of The Effects Of The 2004 Tsunami On Coral Reefs And Fisheries Of The Indian Ocean, Joseph Lane Campbell Jan 2005

A Study Of The Effects Of The 2004 Tsunami On Coral Reefs And Fisheries Of The Indian Ocean, Joseph Lane Campbell

Honors Theses

This thesis serves as a broad-scale review of the effects of the tsunami on the coral reefs and the fisheries of the affected Indian Ocean region. The main goals were to 1) use my research from a recolonization project completed May 2004 as a basis for predictiverecovery models for the coral reefs, 2) review and summarize the newly available literature of the tsunami effects on coral reefs in the Indian Ocean and 3) predict the future of the Indian Ocean fisheries based on the review of the tsunami effects on human and fishery communities, using selected species as models. It …

Persuasive Email Messages For Patient Communication, Muhammad Walji, Kathy Johnson-Throop, Todd Johnson, Elmer Bernstam, Jiajie Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

To improve health and reduce costs, we need to encourage patients to make better health care decisions. Since email is widely available, it may be useful for patient-directed interventions. However, we know little about how the contents of an email message can influence a health-related decision. We propose a model to understand how patients may process persuasive email messages.

Grappling With The Meaning Of 'Testimonial', Richard D. Friedman Jan 2005

Grappling With The Meaning Of 'Testimonial', Richard D. Friedman

Articles

Crawford v. Washington, has adopted a testimonial approach to the Confrontation Clause of the Sixth Amendment. Under this approach, a statement that is deemed to be testimonial in nature may not be introduced at trial against an accused unless he has had an opportunity to cross-examine the person who made the statement and that person is unavailable to testify at trial. If a statement is not deemed to be testimonial, then the Confrontation Clause poses little if any obstacle to its admission.2 A great deal therefore now rides on the meaning of the word "testimonial."

Predicting Leadership And Performance In Uniformed Organisations Using The Five Factor Model Of Personality, Christopher John James Allender Jan 2005

Predicting Leadership And Performance In Uniformed Organisations Using The Five Factor Model Of Personality, Christopher John James Allender

School of Psychology Theses

Selection has been primarily focussed on the use of ability and aptitude measures as they have been shown to predict job performance in uniformed organisations. Personality assessment has largely been ignored as a possible contributor to improving predictions of performance. The emergence of the Five Factor Model as a framework for personality research, together with the development of the Trait Self Description Inventory (TSDI), has provided the opportunity to investigate how personality assessment might improve upon existing selection methods to predict performance in training. It was found that existing criterion measures did not fully reflect the core aims of the …
