Adaptive Self-Regulation And Organizational Politics: Investigating The Effects In The Accounting Profession, Sharon Howell Jan 2005

Adaptive Self-Regulation And Organizational Politics: Investigating The Effects In The Accounting Profession, Sharon Howell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate whether or not perceptions of organizational politics mediate the relationships between accountants' personality and interpersonal traits and their perceptions of a superior's leadership ability and performance. An accountant who has a higher degree of confidence in his or her superior's abilities is more likely to be committed to a given project, resulting in a better project outcome. This benefits the client and ultimately society as a whole. This study contributes to the accounting and psychology literatures because extant research views perceptions of leadership ability and performance from the perspective of the individual …

When Life Really Is A Stage: A Test Of Objectification Theory Using Dancers And Non-Dancers, Megan Duesterhaus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study tested a model of objectification theory proposed by Fredrickson and Roberts (1997) as it applies to disordered eating in a sample of dancers and non-dancers. The methods in this study are based on a previous test of objectification theory done by Tiggeman and Slater (2001). Two samples of participants were given a survey to measure self-objectification and its anticipated consequences. The first sample included 155 women who participated in either ballet, modern, jazz, or hip-hop dance. The second sample included 199 women enrolled in undergraduate classes at the University of Central Florida during the fall semester of 2004. …

Next, this Article will discuss (i) the mechanics of the annual Major League Baseball draft, (ii) the factors that contribute to the necessity and desire for amateur baseball players to retain a competent agent or lawyer before they have extinguished their NCAA eligibility, and (iii) how the NCAA regulations are detrimental to both drafted and draft-eligible amateur baseball players. Tragedy And Triumph In Title Ix, Welch Suggs Jan 2005

Tragedy And Triumph In Title Ix, Welch Suggs

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The NCAA is trying to send a stronger message about the importance of the educational goals of college sports, as evidenced by the elevation of academic standards. However, colleges send a powerful message to parents by rewarding them for allowing their children to play a single sport year-round, to the exclusion of other activities. If sport offers a stronger guarantee of college admission than study--and Bowen's work indicates that is true not just at big-time sports powerhouses, but also at the country's most prestigious colleges--who can blame a student or parent from diving into sports? The future of women's athletics …

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

This study examined relationships among the financial practices, financial well-being, and health of a sample of 3,121 financial distressed consumers who were new clients participating in the debt management program of a large national non-profit credit counseling organization. Respondents who reported having improved health since participating in credit counseling were more likely than others to engage in positive financial behaviors. Beyond The "War" On Terrorism: Towards The New Intelligence Network, Ronald D. Lee, Paul M. Schwartz

Michigan Law Review

In Terrorism, Freedom, and Security, Philip B. Heymann undertakes a wide-ranging study of how the United States can - and in his view should - respond to the threat of international terrorism. A former Deputy Attorney General of the United States Department of Justice ("DOJ") and current James Barr Ames Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, Heymann draws on his governmental experience and jurisprudential background in developing a series of nuanced approaches to preventing terrorism. Heymann makes clear his own policy and legal preferences. First, as his choice of subtitle suggests, he firmly rejects the widely used metaphor …

Private Motive And Perpetual Conditions In Charitable Naming Gifts: When Good Names Go Bad, John K. Eason Jan 2005

Private Motive And Perpetual Conditions In Charitable Naming Gifts: When Good Names Go Bad, John K. Eason

Faculty Articles

This article explores the problems that often result from a charitable naming opportunity contribution. A charitable naming opportunity contribution exists when a donor transfers money or property to a charitable organization upon terms that result in an individual's name being associated in some way with the organization, its institutions, activities, or facilities. Implementing such arrangements can become problematic as circumstances change over time. Matters considered here include the meaning of "charity" as affected by a donor's personal desire to perpetuate a name. This article also highlights the quite varied doctrinal analyses that may apply when deviation from the precise terms …

Article 9 Of The Constitution Of Japan And Procedural And Substantive Heuristics For Consensus, Mark A. Chinen Jan 2005

Article 9 Of The Constitution Of Japan And Procedural And Substantive Heuristics For Consensus, Mark A. Chinen

Faculty Articles

Japan is considering changes to its constitution, including Article 9, which prohibits it from maintaining a military force. If amendments are made, it would mark the first time the Japanese constitution has been amended since its establishment in 1947. Professor Chinen examines the debates on Article 9 using scholarship on constitutions as providing heuristics for decision-making. Constitutions help overcome the problems of emotion and time-inconsistency. They also enable societies of different deliberative groups to avoid the pitfalls of deliberation by requiring groups to interact with one another and by providing opportunities for compromise through what Cass Sunstein refers to as …

Freedom In A Regulatory State?: Lawrence, Marriage And Biopolitics, Dean Spade, Craig Willse

Faculty Articles

This paper attempts to trace the links between the Lawrence v. Texas decision and campaigns for gay marriage rights in order to envision movements that seek justice for more than just the most racially and economically privileged lesbians and gay men. The authors outline the limits of the agenda represented by Lawrence and propose alternative modes for resisting the coercive regulation of sexuality, gender, and family formations.

Systems Development Tools And The Relationship To Project Design: Cost And Budget Implications, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan Jan 2005

Systems Development Tools And The Relationship To Project Design: Cost And Budget Implications, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

An investigation into current system development trends, including a summary of projects, platforms, and tools. The majority of projects get completed on time and within budget, but 14 percent still present problems. The choice of tools appears to be changing to represent the demand for new projects on new platforms—particularly the Internet. CASE tools are used sparingly, and Java is beginning to replace C++ in many projects. Database management systems are critical to almost all projects.

Spectacle Of Self In Medieval Romance: Pagentry, Performance, And Clothing, Crady Yerger Bobo Jan 2005

Spectacle Of Self In Medieval Romance: Pagentry, Performance, And Clothing, Crady Yerger Bobo

Honors Theses

My thesis focuses on young knights finding their identity. I concentrate on six works, The Story of the Grail, Havelok the Dane, Sir Gareth of Orkeney, Guigemar, Sir Launfal, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and how the various romancers define identity thematically. This occurs in three dififerent ways: with Perceval it is through education, Havelok and Gareth start out as kitchen boys, prove their inherent identity, and are thus self-inventing knights, and for Guigemar, Launfal, and Perceval it is about having their sexuality challenged. I also try in each chapter to give some historical background on the reason …

The Effects Of Physiological Arousal On Measures Of Upper Extremity Position Sense In Healthy Young Adults, Melissa Angelique Parker Jan 2005

The Effects Of Physiological Arousal On Measures Of Upper Extremity Position Sense In Healthy Young Adults, Melissa Angelique Parker

Honors Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of physiological arousal on the ability to perceive upper extremity position in healthy young adults. Heart rate measurements and blood pressure measurements were taken at pre-established intervals during data collection. Pre-stressor and post-stressor upper extremity trials were also recorded. Twenty participants, 12 females and 8 males, with a mean age of 22.3 (20 33) years comprised the experimental sample. Participants in the experimental sample underwent a combination of the Stroop color-word task and simple math problems to produce a state of arousal and were pre and post tested for upper …
