Enhancing Collaborative Argumentation In An Online Environment, Jennifer Dawn Golanics Jan 2005

Enhancing Collaborative Argumentation In An Online Environment, Jennifer Dawn Golanics

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Studies indicate that collaborative argumentation can aid students' understanding and improve their problem-solving skills. This study used the online environment WebCT to explore the improvement of argumentation through goal instruction. In previous studies of collaborative argumentation using WebCT, small groups of students discussed controversial questions. Some groups were given a general goal to persuade, but others were given an elaborated goal to generate reasons and evidence. The effect that the elaborated goal had compared to the general goal was analyzed. This study replicated those previous studies, with some alterations. The goal was to evaluate two interventions designed to increase argument …

An Analysis Of Factors Affecting Net-Migration To Clark County, Scott Charles Mitchell Jan 2005

An Analysis Of Factors Affecting Net-Migration To Clark County, Scott Charles Mitchell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Clark County has experienced rapid population growth during the 1990s. The reasons for this rapid growth are a combination of proximity to other population centers, economics, quality of life, and demographic factors. Using OLS and GLS regression methods on pooled time-series county-level data between the years 1990 and 1997, several factors proved to be significantly correlated with the net-migration to Clark County. The most important factors affecting net-migration to Clark County are climate and demographics.

Positioning Analysis Of Second-Tier Convention Destinations As Perceived By Association Meeting Planners In The United States Of America, Min Sun Park

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research examines and compares the association meeting planners' perceptions (cognitive, affective, and overall) and behavioral intentions of four selected second-tier convention destinations: Indianapolis, Nashville, Charlotte, and San Jose. The study measures both quantitative (structured) and qualitative (unstructured) perceptions to uncover perceived strengths and weaknesses of each convention city; This study can confirm that there are significant differences in the perceptions and the behavioral intentions for the four convention destinations. The findings of the study will be beneficial to both second-tier cities and association meeting planners. The second-tier cities will better understand planners' site selection criteria and perceptions, which will …

Differences in strategy uses among low-, medium-, and high-achieving groups were determined in two subject-matter areas (Chinese language and mathematics); Instruments used for data collection were the Test Preparation Strategies Questionnaire (TPSQ) and Test Taking Strategies Questionnaire (TTSQ), which examined students' strategy use in cognitive/metacognitive, motivational/emotional, environmental management areas; Results indicated that Chinese tenth graders memorized contents more often than other strategies while preparing for tests. Students planned their course of action for test preparation and selected study …

Assessing “Discover Mojave” Instrument Development And Analysis, Lori Olafson, Gregory Schraw, Jeanne A. Klockow

Reports (DM)

We developed a comprehensive assessment plan and tested the curriculum to determine whether hands-on outdoor recreation events promote knowledge, attitudes, and performance among at-risk urban children. Knowledge, attitude, and performance assessments were developed, refined and conducted through various stages based on cultural and language barriers as well a variety of age groups participating within the events. Findings revealed that knowledge, attitudes, and performance increased substantially as a result of participating in the outdoor recreation events. We conclude that the implementation and assessment of the program is strong. We also make several recommendations for future programs.

Competent Counselor Practice For Use Of Bibliotherapy, D. Pehrsson, P. S. Mcmillen Jan 2005

Competent Counselor Practice For Use Of Bibliotherapy, D. Pehrsson, P. S. Mcmillen

Library Faculty Research

We love books; those who know us know that the perfect present for either of us is a book, any kind of book, or something related to books. We are voracious readers. We recommend books to friends, to students, to clinicians, to faculty, and of course, we recommend them to clients. We began to wonder, “How should a counselor choose the appropriate book for a particular client?” We pondered, “Is it simply a matter of trial and error?”

Neoclassicism, Artificial Intelligence, And The Marginalization Of Ethics, John B. Davis Jan 2005

Neoclassicism, Artificial Intelligence, And The Marginalization Of Ethics, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose – The paper examines the dependence of the positivist and welfarist preference satisfaction paradigm of neoclassical economics upon an implicit functionalist philosophy of mind. Functionalism is the doctrine that mental states are strictly materialistic and understandable in cause-effect terms. An important aspect of functionalism is the multiple realizability thesis, namely, that mental states can be realized in any type of hardware, whether human brain or computer.

Design/methodology/approach – The approach used involves investigating the fact-value distinction after Robbins in terms of the positivist meta-ethical view known as emotivism, and then explaining emotivism as inherently functionalist. Functionalist thinking itself is …

Learners And Teachers: The Application Of Psychology To Second-Language Acquisition, Madeline Ehrman Jan 2005

Learners And Teachers: The Application Of Psychology To Second-Language Acquisition, Madeline Ehrman

Russian Language Journal

The successful acquisition of second languages depends as much on good psychology as it does on sound linguistics. Both teaching and learning can be enriched by understanding and applying basic psychological principles.

The speaking and reading performance of second-language learners has received a great deal of attention in areas of applied linguistics such as conversation analysis, speech production analysis, oral testing research, classroom interaction analysis, and task-based learning research.(Ellis, 1994). In addition to linguistic variables, researchers have examined psychological determinants of learner achievement in speech performance, among them “individual difference variables.” These relatively stable learner characteristics—including language aptitude, motivation, and …

Introduction To Volume 55

Russian Language Journal

The present issue of RLJ reflects the new editorial board’s view of the state of Russian study in the U.S. and the world today in the context of globalization, internationalization of curriculum, and increased expectations regarding the outcomes of language study everywhere. (Verbitskaya) While more modest than the bold Soviet-era policy assertions concerning Russian as a “primary language of mass international communication,” Kostomarov addresses the new role of Russian as mother tongue, second language, or major foreign language for more than 300 million speakers in the world, nearly 3 million of whom are now resident in the United States, and …

Individual Difference Theory In Faculty Development: What Faculty Developers Should Know About Style, Betty Lou Leaver, Rebecca L. Oxford Jan 2005

Individual Difference Theory In Faculty Development: What Faculty Developers Should Know About Style, Betty Lou Leaver, Rebecca L. Oxford

Russian Language Journal

Over the past three decades and more, growing attention has been paid to the need to tailor instruction to meet the differing learning and affective styles of students. However, little has been written about doing the same for faculty.

Typically, the purpose of faculty development is to empower new and experienced teachers by providing information, enhancing self-confidence, and developing attitudes and beliefs favorable to effective teaching. Such empowerment usually requires teachers to change their teaching behaviors— and change does not come automatically or identically to all teachers. Rather, “teachers change in areas [in which] they are already primed to change, …
