Children Of Incarcerated Parents And The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor, Megan A. Petersen Jan 2005

Children Of Incarcerated Parents And The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor, Megan A. Petersen

Graduate Research Papers

Of the 72 million minor children in the United States, 2 million of those have a parent who is currently incarcerated. The dynamics of a child's life are greatly altered when a parent is incarcerated, and many children struggle as a result. Without some form of support or intervention, they are five times more likely than other children to become incarcerated themselves. Elementary school counselors must be aware of the characteristics of children of incarcerated parents, while working to address their needs across numerous levels and contexts.

A Model Of Global Communication Competence, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2005

A Model Of Global Communication Competence, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

We are living in a globalizing society. The development of communication and transportation technology has shrunk the world, in which the global interdependence for people and cultures becomes a norm of life. As a result, the increasing frequency of face-to-face interaction among people from different cultural, ethnic, social, and religious backgrounds demands that we develop intercultural/global communication competence, by which we know how to see things through the eyes of others and add their knowledge to our personal repertoires. In other words, only through global communication competence can people from different backgrounds communicate effectively and successfully in the globalizing society. …

An Examination Of Chen And Starosta’S Model Of Intercultural Sensitivity In Germany And United States, Wolfgang Fritz, Andrea Graf, Joachim Hentze, Antje Möllenberg, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2005

An Examination Of Chen And Starosta’S Model Of Intercultural Sensitivity In Germany And United States, Wolfgang Fritz, Andrea Graf, Joachim Hentze, Antje Möllenberg, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study examines, via a replication study, Chen and Starosta’s Model of Intercultural Sensitivity which is developed in the USA context. Although an earlier attempt to reproduce the model in Germany has been successful, the present replication study does not reach the same result based on German and US-American sample. Consequently, the intercultural validity of Chen and Starosta’s Model becomes doubtful for the time being, and which demands more close examinations in future research.

Dilation Of The Oropharynx Via Selective Stimulation Of The Hypoglossal Nerve, Jingtao Huang Jan 2005

Dilation Of The Oropharynx Via Selective Stimulation Of The Hypoglossal Nerve, Jingtao Huang

Doctoral Dissertations

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by the retraction of the tongue to occlude the upper airway (UAW). Electrical stimulation of the tongue protrudor and retractor muscle has been demonstrated as an effective technique to alleviate UAW obstructions and is considered to be a potential treatment for OSA. Recent studies have shown that selective stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve (HG) to activate tongue muscles using a single implantable device presents an attractive approach for treating OSA. In this study, the functional outcome of selective hypoglossal nerve stimulation with a multi-contact peripheral nerve electrode was studied by imaging the airway in …

Conditioning Beaver To Avoid Desirable Plants, Julie Harper, Dale L. Nolte, Thomas J. Deliberto, David Bergman Jan 2005

Conditioning Beaver To Avoid Desirable Plants, Julie Harper, Dale L. Nolte, Thomas J. Deliberto, David Bergman

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Conditioned food aversion can be used to train animals to avoid select foods. Generally, aversive conditioning is best applied when animals first encounter a food item. However, almost by definition damage is inflicted to desirable plants very familiar to the culprit. We assessed the potential for training beaver to avoid a known preferred food. During a 5 day day treatment period beavers were offered only corn at 1600 hours. Six hours later, animals that had ingested corn were injected with 150 mg/kg lithium chloride (LiCl), with a control group receiving sodium chloride (NaCl). Alternate foods were then offered with corn …

Parental Influence On Children's Ethnic Identity Among Chinese Americans, Yunus Sham'ah Md. Jan 2005

Parental Influence On Children's Ethnic Identity Among Chinese Americans, Yunus Sham'ah Md.

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the influence of Chinese American parents on their children's ethnic identity. Two research questions were designed to examine these relationships: Does the personal construct of Chinese American parents influence their children's ethnic identity and does the length of stay in the United States of Chinese American parents influence children's ethnic identity? Parental influence was identified as parents' ethnic behaviors, parents' ethnic values, parents' personal construct, and their length of stay in the United States. The 93 families who participated in this study were purposely selected from three Chinese language schools from a Midwestern city of the United …

The Temporal Context Model In Spatial Navigation And Relational Learning: Toward A Common Explanation Of Medial Temporal Lobe Function Across Domains, Marc W. Howard, Mrigankka S. Fotedar, Aditya V. Datey, Michael E. Hasselmo Jan 2005

The Temporal Context Model In Spatial Navigation And Relational Learning: Toward A Common Explanation Of Medial Temporal Lobe Function Across Domains, Marc W. Howard, Mrigankka S. Fotedar, Aditya V. Datey, Michael E. Hasselmo

Psychology - All Scholarship

The medial temporal lobe (MTL) has been studied extensively at all levels of analysis, yet its function remains unclear. Theory regarding the cognitive function of the MTL has centered along 3 themes. Different authors have emphasized the role of the MTL in episodic recall, spatial navigation, or relational memory. Starting with the temporal context model (M.W. Howard and M. J. Kahana, 2002), a distributed memory model that has been applied to benchmark data from episodic recall tasks, the authors propose that the entorhinal cortex supports a gradually changing representation of temporal context and the hippocampus proper enables retrieval of these …

Consent, Informal Organization, And Job Rewards: A Mixed Methods Analysis, Marty Laubach Jan 2005

Consent, Informal Organization, And Job Rewards: A Mixed Methods Analysis, Marty Laubach

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Research

This study uses a mixed methods approach to workplace dynamics. Ethnographic observations show that the consent deal underlies an informal stratification that divides the workplace into an “informal periphery,” a “conventional core,” and an “administrative clan.” The “consent deal” is defined as an exchange of autonomy, voice, and schedule flexibility for intensified commitment, and is modeled as a single factor underlying these elements. When constructed as an additive scale, consent allows informal organization to be included in workplace models. Despite its derivation from subjective and informal processes, informal structure exerts an independent effect on objective job rewards such as wages.

Implementing Lexical And Creative Intentionality In Synthetic Personality, Erik Vick Jan 2005

Implementing Lexical And Creative Intentionality In Synthetic Personality, Erik Vick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Creating engaging, interactive, and immersive synthetic characters is a difficult task and evaluating the success of a synthetic character is often even more difficult. The later problem is solved by extending Turing's Imitation Game thusly: computational construct should be evaluated based on the criteria of how well the character can mimic a human. In order to accomplish a successful evaluation of the proposed metric, synthetic characters must be consistently believable and capable of role-appropriate emotional expression. The author believes traditional synthetic characters must be improved to meet this goal. For a synthetic character to be believable, human users must be …

Situational And Driver Characteristics Associated With Deervehicle Collisions In Southeastern Michigan, Alix Marcoux, Graham Hickling, Shawn Riley, Scott Winterstein Jan 2005

Situational And Driver Characteristics Associated With Deervehicle Collisions In Southeastern Michigan, Alix Marcoux, Graham Hickling, Shawn Riley, Scott Winterstein

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs) create societal impacts throughout the range of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginanus). In Michigan reported DVCs increased by nearly 60% between 1992-2003, with current estimates at more than 65,000 DVCs per year and a mean of $2,300 vehicle damage. To better understand where to direct education and information programs, we used Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) data, 2001-2003, to profile driver characteristics and accident situations of DVCs in Washtenaw, Oakland, and Monroe Counties in Michigan. Each county varies in intensity of land use, human and deer densities, and available deer habitat. Deer density in Washtenaw, …
