An Exploratory Study Of Functional Status In Post Cardiac Arrest Survivors Discharged To Home, John J. Whitcomb Phd Aug 2005

An Exploratory Study Of Functional Status In Post Cardiac Arrest Survivors Discharged To Home, John J. Whitcomb Phd

Dissertations

Cardiopulmonary arrest is a major health problem, claiming 350,000 to 450,000 lives per year in the United States, but survival has increased to 49% from the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) by lay personnel. Leidy's work on functional status is a comprehensive framework to describe functional status and has not been used in this population. The specific aims of the project were to describe perceived functional capacity, physical functional performance, mental health, symptom distress, and demographic factors in survivors of cardiopulmonary arrest after discharge to home and to examine the relationship among perceived functional capacity, mental health and physical …

What Is "Good" Education Research?, Karl Hostetler Aug 2005

What Is "Good" Education Research?, Karl Hostetler

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The question of what counts as good education research has received a great deal of attention, but too often it is conceived principally as a methodological question rather than an ethical one. Good education research is a matter not only of sound procedures but also of beneficial aims and results; our ultimate aim as researchers and educators is to serve people’s well‐being. For their research to be deemed good in a strong sense, education researchers must be able to articulate some sound connection between their work and a robust and justifiable conception of human well‐being. There is a good deal …

A Comparison Study Between Writing On Handheld Computers And Pencil-Paper In The Elementary Classroom, Ling-Chin Ko

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare the difference in writing effort associated with two methods, pencil and paper and handheld computers in the third grade classroom. The methods were compared in terms of the quality of the stories written, and the length of the stories in number of words, and time on task during writing of the stories. Three hypotheses were defined to identify the effect of writing efforts associated with the two methods, two classes and the effect on the interaction between the methods and the class. All three hypotheses were analyzed with a two-way MANOVA test. …

Attitudes Mediate The Association Between Childhood Disciplinary History And Disciplinary Responses, Mary Bower-Russa Aug 2005

Attitudes Mediate The Association Between Childhood Disciplinary History And Disciplinary Responses, Mary Bower-Russa

Peer Reviewed Articles

According to recent estimates, childhood abuse victims are at 12 times higher risk for child abuse perpetration than those without such abusive histories. This study focused on delineation of the mechanisms by which intergenerational patterns of abuse may occur and, in particular, the role that disciplinary attitudes may play in mediating the relation between disciplinary history and risk for abusive parenting. Participants (n = 459) completed a series of questionnaires to assess childhood history, disciplinary attitudes, and disciplinary practices. Structural equation modeling indicated that the association between disciplinary history and disciplinary responses was partially mediated by attitudes, with more than …

Endovascular Repair Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Considerations In Anesthesia Nursing, Tammy Hoganson Aug 2005

Endovascular Repair Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Considerations In Anesthesia Nursing, Tammy Hoganson

Theses and Dissertations

The nature of the study involves endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms and anesthesia considerations. Endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm is a new, noninvasive procedure to repair abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Abdominal aortic aneurysm was once considered high risk with patients spending one to two weeks in the hospital following surgery. This new, less invasive procedure allows patients to go home in as little as two days. Along with new technology brings new challenges for the nurse anesthetist. The researcher will review current literature regarding AAA repair and involve the anesthesia care. The paper will review preoperative, intraopeative, and postoperative …

Product Development Knowledge-Processing System, Jiefei Qiu Aug 2005

Product Development Knowledge-Processing System, Jiefei Qiu

Theses

This thesis develops a methodology that integrates Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) and Design Structure Matrix (DSM) to address the problem of analyzing, interpreting, and transforming the knowledge data flow during the product development process.

A product development process is the sequence of steps an enterprise takes to conceive, design, and commercialize a product. The general process includes: Planning, Concept Development, System-Level Design, Detail Design, Testing and Refinement, and Production Ramp-Up. One way to think about the development process is as a knowledge-processing system.

Prior to this study, there are few articles integrating TRIZ and …

Investigation Of A Cognitive Dissonance Intervention Versus A Psychoeducational Placebo Control: Testing The Effectiveness Of Prevention Programming For Eating Disorders, Valerie L. Krysanski Aug 2005

Investigation Of A Cognitive Dissonance Intervention Versus A Psychoeducational Placebo Control: Testing The Effectiveness Of Prevention Programming For Eating Disorders, Valerie L. Krysanski

Theses and Dissertations

As psychoeducational eating disorder prevention programs have not been shown to reduce eating pathology, these programs are well-suited to use as placebo controls against interventions that have been shown to be effective. The proposed study compared a cognitive dissonance based intervention to a psychoeducational placebo control group with college women. Seventy-five college women who had elevated scores on a measure of thin ideal internalization, placing them at increased risk for developing an eating disorder, were randomly assigned to either a psychoeducational intervention (n = 35) or a dissonance-based intervention (n = 40). Each intervention was composed of 3, 1-hour sessions, …

Interpersonal Change As An Outcome Of Time-Limited Interpersonal Therapy., Nicholas Lawrence Salsman 1978- Aug 2005

Interpersonal Change As An Outcome Of Time-Limited Interpersonal Therapy., Nicholas Lawrence Salsman 1978-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined two questions related to interpersonal change as an outcome of Time-Limited Interpersonal Therapy (TLIPT). The first asked if clients experience both symptom change and interpersonal change when treated with TLIPT. The second explored factors that contribute to interpersonal changes in clients treated with TLIPT. The study examined a sample of 61 clients who identified interpersonal problems as a primary therapeutic issue and were treated with between 9 and 76 sessions of TLIPT. Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the first question revealed that clients experienced significant reductions in measures of symptoms and interpersonal distress. Clients also …

Intergenerational Power Exchange Model: Meta-Analysis Of Male Batterers’ Intervention Programs, Suzanne Van Weelde Aug 2005

Intergenerational Power Exchange Model: Meta-Analysis Of Male Batterers’ Intervention Programs, Suzanne Van Weelde

Dissertations

Domestic violence is an ongoing social problem. Many women have suffered from the abuse of spouses and boyfriends. A number of children have been victims, or witnesses of, this particular form of violence. The consequences of abuse are: preventable crimes, victims and witnesses becoming abusers themselves, escalating health and mental costs. Domestic violence has touched every community within the United States. It is not a social problem that sociological researchers can afford to minimize.

Sociological literature has documented the growth of the social problem of domestic violence. As a result of the awareness of domestic violence as a serious social …

Examining The Impact Of Parental Involvement In A Dual Language Program: Implications For Children And Schools - Ollas Report No. 2, J. F. Casas Aug 2005

Examining The Impact Of Parental Involvement In A Dual Language Program: Implications For Children And Schools - Ollas Report No. 2, J. F. Casas

Latino/Latin American Studies Reports

This study focuses on a dual language (Spanish-English) program in the Omaha Public Schools. Dual language programs are programs in which children develop proficiency in two languages simultaneously. These programs are currently seen as the gold standard second language education because of the large amount of empirical support they have received with respect to children’s academic gains. All of the dual language classrooms are comprised of half native English speakers and half Spanish speakers.

Parental involvement has received much empirical attention with respect to traditional school programs; however, little is known about the role of parental involvement in dual language …

Evaluating The Operative Mechanisms Underlying The High-Probability Request Sequence, Carrie L. Coleman Aug 2005

Evaluating The Operative Mechanisms Underlying The High-Probability Request Sequence, Carrie L. Coleman

Dissertations

Failure to comply with requests in educational settings interferes with the learning process. The high-probability request sequence has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for noncompliance. However, the operative mechanisms underlying this treatment remain unknown. This study sought to further elucidate high-p behavior change mechanisms through the manipulation of reinforcement and response rate variables. The purpose was to determine whether increases in compliance to low-probability requests could be obtained with either the high-p sequence or with the delivery of preferred stimuli on a response-independent basis. Math problems served as high-p and low-p requests, and data were collected on compliance …

Career Experiences And Career Development Among Chinese American Professional Women: A Qualitative Study, Yi-Ling Linda Kuo-Rice Aug 2005

Career Experiences And Career Development Among Chinese American Professional Women: A Qualitative Study, Yi-Ling Linda Kuo-Rice

Dissertations

Only a few research studies have addressed the cultural transitions and career-related issues experienced by Chinese American women. These individuals represent a silent group whose career values, career choices, and vocational needs remain largely unexplored (Yang, 1991).

This qualitative study, using grounded theory methods, explored the career experiences, career development, and career decision-making of nine foreign-bornChinese American professional women from various career fields. The findings from the study are divided into two parts. The first part presents summaries of each study participant's career development, providing a context-rich description of each case. The second part of the findings offers the results …

Pyramidal Staff Training: Teaching Play And Manding To Children With Autism And Developmental Disabilities, Koji Takeshima Aug 2005

Pyramidal Staff Training: Teaching Play And Manding To Children With Autism And Developmental Disabilities, Koji Takeshima

Dissertations

This study involved pyramidal staff training and the teaching of play and manding to children with autism and developmental disabilities in an early intervention program. The following training components were sequentially introduced to each technician: (a) a written procedure; (b) video modeling; (c) a slide show and checklist, combined with video modeling; and (d) feedback. The trainees improved their skills in teaching play as these training components were introduced, and the children's performance in play and manding subsequently improved. For the skills of teaching play, the core component of the training that resulted in the largest improvement varied across technicians. …

The Relationship Between Counselor-In-Training Personality Traits, Family-Of-Origin Characteristics And Working Alliance, Anthony W. Tatman Aug 2005

The Relationship Between Counselor-In-Training Personality Traits, Family-Of-Origin Characteristics And Working Alliance, Anthony W. Tatman

Dissertations

Research has revealed that the working alliance between counselors-in-training (CITs) and their clients predict therapeutic outcome (Horvath & Symonds, 1991; Parish & Eagle, 2003). The amount of research is limited, however, concerning CIT traits that facilitate the development of the working alliance (Ackerman & Hilsenroth, 2001; Ligiero & Gelso, 2002; Wampold, 2001). The purpose of the present study was to identify the degree to which CIT personality traits and family-of-origin (FOO) characteristics are associated with working alliance evaluations. This study utilized the 5 domains of personality, measured by the NEO-FFI (Costa & McCrae, 1992), and alexithymia, measured by the TAS-20 …

Trust, Education And Development In Jamaica, 1950-2000, Beverley J. Morgan Aug 2005

Trust, Education And Development In Jamaica, 1950-2000, Beverley J. Morgan

Student Scholarship

Education is considered to be the greatest predictor of social capital which, in turn, is said to be the greatest predictor of socio-economic development. In order to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of this apparent chain of causation the study looked closely at the variables of interest among a population of highly educated Jamaicans. Certain highly educated members of the cohorts who graduated from high school in Jamaica between 1950 and 2000 show a high propensity for Generalised Trust that finds expression in the extent of their sociability, the range and heterogeneity of the groups to which they belong …

Growth, Adaptation And Success In Mid-Career Leaders Experiencing Disruptive Midelife Transitions: An Exploration Of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Hope And Resilience, Kathryn V. Kamisnky Aug 2005

Growth, Adaptation And Success In Mid-Career Leaders Experiencing Disruptive Midelife Transitions: An Exploration Of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Hope And Resilience, Kathryn V. Kamisnky

Student Scholarship

This study explores the experience of disruptive, midlife transition among mid-career leaders. The genesis of life cycle theory, over the past fifty years provides an important foundation to the exploration of midlife transition. While theses theories offer an explanation of the types, expected timing and frequency of transitions in life, they do not address the core competencies that the mid-career leader leverages to achieve success through disruptive periods of transition. The central hypothesis of this research is that there are four independent variables or competencies within leaders that affect the outcome of their experience and management of disruptive life transitions. …

Analysis Of Group Differences And Predictors Of Hooper Visual Organization Test Scores, Michael R. Devries Aug 2005

Analysis Of Group Differences And Predictors Of Hooper Visual Organization Test Scores, Michael R. Devries

Dissertations

The Hooper Visual Organization Test (VOT) is described in the manual as a screening instrument that measures the ability to organize visual stimuli (Hooper, 1983). The VOT is identified as being particularly sensitive to neurological impairment. Studies to determine the criterion and construct validity of the VOT have examined its usefulness in distinguishing between individuals with neurological impairment from those with other disorders. Few studies have included samples from normal, psychiatrically impaired, and neurologically impaired populations in determining the VOT's usefulness in identifying neurologically impaired individuals. Furthermore, as neuropsychology has moved away from the understanding of neurological impairment as a …

Effects Of Resistance Training Volume And Variety On Dietary Intake And Mood State In Untrained Subject, Suzette K. Smith Aug 2005

Effects Of Resistance Training Volume And Variety On Dietary Intake And Mood State In Untrained Subject, Suzette K. Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: While there is research on the effects of aerobic training on various aspects of mood state and nutrient intake, little is known of the effect of resistance training on these variables.

Purpose: To examine the effects of resistance training (RT) volume and variety on total energy (kcal) and macronutrient intake, and mood states in a healthy, untrained population.

Method:The investigation was part of a prospective experimental study examining the effects of three RT protocols on body composition and strength. An initial 102, healthy, untrained male and female participants, ages 20-40, were recruited, and randomized into one of three …

Sexuality And The "System Of Liberty": Comment On Stolzenberg, William A. Galston Aug 2005

Sexuality And The "System Of Liberty": Comment On Stolzenberg, William A. Galston

San Diego Law Review

Marriage and liberal democracy are forms of ordered liberty, one standing between sexual license and ascetics, and the other standing between anarchy and oppression. The relationship between liberal democracy and sexual liberty can be framed using four strategies devised by the liberal democratic project to limit the scope of personal freedom. This article places Stolzenberg's theory of love and liberty within the fourth strategy, which places limits on individual conduct through personal development and perfection. The author concludes that Stolzenberg is too bold for resting ordered sexual liberty on love, and suggests that the ultimate test for any form of …

The Meaning Of Marriage: State Efforts To Facilitate Friendship, Love, And Childrearing, Richard Arneson Aug 2005

The Meaning Of Marriage: State Efforts To Facilitate Friendship, Love, And Childrearing, Richard Arneson

San Diego Law Review

The Prioritarian Consequentialist approaches state regulation of marriage from a standpoint opposed to the Lockean Libertarian natural rights tradition. The prioritarian approach favors state regulation of marriage that induces people to make positive cost-benefit arrangements, whereas the lockean avers any coercive restriction of people's liberty. Taking a prioritarian consequentialist perspective, this article discusses the appropriate state policy regarding private relationships involving love, sex, and childrearing, and assesses the meaning of marriage and possible alterations to marriage that would lead to consequences on the quality of human life. The prioritarian consequentialist supports state policies that produce the best outcome for people's …

Everything I Know About Marriage I Learned From Law Professors, Brian H. Bix Aug 2005

Everything I Know About Marriage I Learned From Law Professors, Brian H. Bix

San Diego Law Review

Lawyers and legal academics routinely offer their views on social and political issues. This article considers whether legal academics add any special expertise to the current marriage debates, or whether legal academics should defer to others better suited to answer the questions raised in the marriage debates. The marriage debates involve questions concerning the regulation and definition of marriage, the legal requirements for marriage, and the presence of children. Because of their familiarity with legal analysis, family law doctrine and practice, legal academics and lawyers offer answers and views not available in the rhetoric of the political and media debates …

Who Knows?, Michael B. Kelly Aug 2005

Who Knows?, Michael B. Kelly

San Diego Law Review

Even though other academic disciplines may provide better research and analysis for the discussion of marriage law, lawyers and legal academics can play a role in the marriage debates. This article responds to Professor Bix by discussing the roles lawyers and legal academics can play in the current marriage debates. The roles of lawyers vary from overcoming parochialism and broadening the inquiry outside specific academic disciplines to recognizing the areas that need investigating and synthesizing the results. The roles of legal academics stretch from helping “set the agenda” for research, that is, raising the issues and asking the important questions …

Liberals And Libertines: The Marriage Question In The Liberal Political Imagination, Nomi Maya Stolzenberg Aug 2005

Liberals And Libertines: The Marriage Question In The Liberal Political Imagination, Nomi Maya Stolzenberg

San Diego Law Review

Liberalism and marriage are not easily separated from anti-libertine and libertine ideas. This article frames the meaning of marriage question by comparing Tolstoy’s anti-libertine novella, The Kreutzer Sonata with Roth?s libertine novella, The Dying Animal. Both novellas impale marriage and liberalism to reveal the strains of ambivalence toward freedom of love, sex, and personal attachments. In Tolstoy’s novella, Pozdnyshev reviles marriage because it is nothing more than licensed prostitution. In Roth’s novella, Kepesh despises marriage because it dampens sex and subjects the individual to constraints. The author offers two readings of these novellas, one that emphasizes the boundaries between liberal, …

What Is The "Meaning" Of "Marriage"?, Connie S. Rosati Aug 2005

What Is The "Meaning" Of "Marriage"?, Connie S. Rosati

San Diego Law Review

There is legitimacy to the conservative approach that goes beyond looking at the impact on people's welfare. This article responds to Professor Arneson by offering a different framework to investigate the underlying theoretical values behind appropriate state policies regarding private relationships. Neither the prioritarian consequentialist, nor the lockean libertarian captures the other side of the marriage debate, that is, the traditional ideal. The state’s interest in fostering the conservative, traditional marriage relationships begins to emerge through the author's assumptions that Kantian ethics is correct, that social stability depends on others—inviolate value, and that through love one can apprehend the value …

Traditionalism And Rationalism In The Courts, Gail Heriot Aug 2005

Traditionalism And Rationalism In The Courts, Gail Heriot

San Diego Law Review

Same-sex marriage might pose an unbridgeable issue between rationalist and traditionalist thinking. This article responds to Professor Wax by fitting the legislature and courts into Wax's rationalist/traditionalist paradigm. Like the traditionalist, the court must be cautious, conservative, and avoid egregious errors. The court must decide which party legal tradition already supports. In contrast, the legislature can be viewed as a conduit for rationalist ideas. Like the rationalist, the legislature can break with tradition and choose competing legal reforms that will improve society. Thus, the author concludes that the legislature, not the courts, should decide same-sex marriage issues because when courts …

The Conservative's Dilemma: Traditional Institutions, Social Change, And Same-Sex Marriage, Amy L. Wax Aug 2005

The Conservative's Dilemma: Traditional Institutions, Social Change, And Same-Sex Marriage, Amy L. Wax

San Diego Law Review

Thus far, there has been no coherent, secular elucidation of the opposition to same-sex marriage. This article attempts to develop a consistent position by applying the traditionalist and rationalist views of Edmund Burke and Michael Oakeshott to the same-sex marriage debate, while questioning whether traditional marriage should be changed to include same-sex unions. Burke and Oakeshott represent the conservative approach that advocates an adherence to tradition in the face of change. Through developing this conservative approach, this article seeks a heuristic, in the form of legislative change reflecting a majority view, for when society should accept change. Although an answer …
