The Application Of Interrater Reliability As A Solidification Instrument In A Phenomenological Study, Joan F. Marques, Chester Mccall Sep 2005

The Application Of Interrater Reliability As A Solidification Instrument In A Phenomenological Study, Joan F. Marques, Chester Mccall

The Qualitative Report

Interrater reliability has thus far not been a common application in phenomenological studies. However, once the suggestion w a s brought up by a team of supervising professors during the preliminary orals of a phenomenological study, the utilization of this verification tool turned out to be vital to the credibility level of this type of inquiry, where the researcher is perceived as the main instrument and where bias may, hence, be difficult to eliminate. With creativeness and the appropriate calculation approach the researcher of the here reviewed qualitative study managed to apply this verification tool and found that the establishment …

Phenomenologically Investigating Mediated Nature, Tony E. Adams Sep 2005

Phenomenologically Investigating Mediated Nature, Tony E. Adams

The Qualitative Report

During the summer of 2001 I worked as a bartender in Wyoming, two miles east of Yellowstone National Park. This opportunity provided me with unique experiences of “the wilderness” and as a result, allowed me to become aware of intricacies of living with in a primarily simulated and mass mediated culture, i.e., the United States. Following tenets of phenomenology, this paper investigates the simulated- and mass mediated-ness of society with specific focus on experiences with two nature environments: simulated-nature places (e.g., shopping malls, zoos ) and televised-nature representations (e.g., Crocodile Hunter, Jaws) .

Terrorism, Transit And Public Safety: Evaluating The Risks , Todd Litman Sep 2005

Terrorism, Transit And Public Safety: Evaluating The Risks , Todd Litman

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper evaluates the overall safety of public transit, taking into account all risks, including recent terrorist attacks. It indicates that transit is an extremely safe mode, with total per-passenger-mile fatality rates approximately one-tenth that of automobile travel. It is important for individuals and public officials to avoid overreacting to terrorist threats in ways that increase overall danger. Transit terrorism would cause more total casualties and harm to society if individuals respond to attacks by shifting from public transit to less safe modes, or if decision makers respond by reducing support for public transit.

Pathways To Power: The Role Of Political Parties In Women’S National Political Representation, Sheri L. Kunovich, Pamela Paxton Sep 2005

Pathways To Power: The Role Of Political Parties In Women’S National Political Representation, Sheri L. Kunovich, Pamela Paxton

Sociology Research

The authors extend previous research on women’s participation in politics by examining the role of female elites in political parties in selecting and supporting women as political candidates. They hypothesize that political parties, in their role as gatekeepers, mediate the relationship between country-level factors, such as women’s participation in the labor force, and political outcomes for women. The article focuses on three outcomes for women: the percentage of female political party leaders, the percentage of female candidates in a country, and the percentage of women elected. New cross-national measures of women’s inclusion in political parties are developed and analyzed in …

Correctional Officers’ Perceptions Of Equitable Treatment In The Masculinized Prison Environment, Marie L. Griffin, Gaylene Armstrong, John R. Hepburn Sep 2005

Correctional Officers’ Perceptions Of Equitable Treatment In The Masculinized Prison Environment, Marie L. Griffin, Gaylene Armstrong, John R. Hepburn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Research suggests that employee perceptions of an organization’s support for policies that promote an equitable work environment may differ significantly by race and gender groups. This study examines such perceptual differences and their attitudinal effects on employee experiences within the unique context of a prison setting. Significant differences in correctional officer perceptions of policies are found to exist by race and gender groups. Contrary to expectations, all race and gender groups perceive strong organizational support for equal treatment policies. Moreover, the work experiences of White males are not negatively affected by perceptions of organizational support for equal treatment as had …

Psychological Patterns Among Roman Catholic Clergy Accused Of Sexual Misconduct, Thomas G. Plante, Arianna Aldridge Sep 2005

Psychological Patterns Among Roman Catholic Clergy Accused Of Sexual Misconduct, Thomas G. Plante, Arianna Aldridge

Psychology

A remarkable amount of international attention has focused on the sexual misconduct by Roman Catholic clergy in recent years. While the demographics and risk factor profiles of clergy sex offenders is now fairly well established, the psychological and personality profiles of these men are not. Very few empirical research studies have been published on the psychological and personality functioning of clergy who engage in sexual misconduct in the Catholic Church. The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological profiles of 21 Roman Catholic clergy who have confronted credible accusations of sexual misconduct. Relative to national norms, MMPI-2 results …

Transformational Leadership Of Sales Managers And Job Satisfaction Of Sales Associates In The Fast Moving Consumer Goods Industry In Taiwan, Yu-Jia Hu Sep 2005

Transformational Leadership Of Sales Managers And Job Satisfaction Of Sales Associates In The Fast Moving Consumer Goods Industry In Taiwan, Yu-Jia Hu

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Literature review in sales content supported the theory that sales manager's transformational leadership has a vital influence on the job satisfaction of sales associates, while job satisfaction has significant influence on the sales associates' work behaviors. Very limited studies have extensively examined the relationship between sales managers' transformational leadership and sales associates' job satisfaction, while recent research has focused on how transformational leadership applies to sales management situations.

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between transformational leadership of sales managers and job satisfaction of sales associates in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry in Taiwan. …

Academic Rigor: An Explanation Or An Apology?, James Lubker Sep 2005

Academic Rigor: An Explanation Or An Apology?, James Lubker

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Academic rigor is a topic that elicits some rather strong feelings. I've heard students complain that the courses they are taking are too easy and that we don't demand enough of them. Those students want more rigor in their courses. I've heard faculty complain that students are poorly prepared, have distressingly short attention-spans, and seem to be more interested in parties than in studying. Those faculty don't think that students want or will tolerate increased academic rigor. I've heard parents demand that we refund their money for a course because their child didn't really learn anything and that faculty are …
