Emotional Fluency And The Discrepancy-Attribution Hypothesis, Carissa Zimmerman Sep 2005

Emotional Fluency And The Discrepancy-Attribution Hypothesis, Carissa Zimmerman

Psychology Honors Theses

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate emotional fluency within the framework of the discrepancy-attribution hypothesis. A mismatch between expected and actual fluency results in a feeling of surprisingly good fit, which can lead people to misattribute fluency gained from stimulus manipulations to pastness. Experiment 1 replicated Whittlesea s (2002) finding that words completing high constraint sentence stems were judged to have been studied in a previous phase more often than words completing low constraint sentence stems, regardless of whether the words were actually studied or not. Experiment 1 also provided support for the emotional-fluency hypothesis; participants judged emotional …

Freedom In Dialogue : Huey Long, Father Coughlin, And Anti-Intellectualism In The Public Sphere, Ragan Updegaff Sep 2005

Freedom In Dialogue : Huey Long, Father Coughlin, And Anti-Intellectualism In The Public Sphere, Ragan Updegaff

Speech & Drama Honors Theses

Senator Huey P. Long and radio priest Father Charles E. Coughlin were powerful forces in the public sphere of the United States in 1930. Often accused of being demagogues and Fascists, both men brought to the American people a message designed to relieve the suffering that had taken the country during the Depression. This message was rooted in the tradition of American Populism in which they had both grown up. The rhetoric of both men espoused faith in simple solutions and blamed Wall Street financiers, wealthy industrialists, and corrupt politicians for the hard times that had come. Just as interesting …

Behavioral, Evaluative, And Affective Consequences Of Forgiveness, Amanda Snook Sep 2005

Behavioral, Evaluative, And Affective Consequences Of Forgiveness, Amanda Snook

Psychology Honors Theses

This experiment manipulated the expression of forgiveness after an offense in order to investigate participants' responses to being forgiven. After informing participants that they "lost" a critical document, the experimenter forgave, did not forgive, or did not communicate an offense to the participants. This manipulation did not directly affect participants' willingness to help the experimenter. It did, however, significantly interact with participants' agreeableness when self-esteem and tendency to forgive were covaried, such that high-agreeable people helped most in the no-offense condition and less when unforgiven. Low-agreeable participants demonstrated the opposite trend, with more helping in the unforgiven condition than no-offense. …

An Empirical Examination Of Job Stress And Management Of Emotionally-Based Behavior: Frontline Social Service Personnel Perspective, Doreen Sams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Frontline service personnel (FSP) play an invaluable role in the marketing mix by directly influencing the customers perception of both the service organization as well as the service quality during the face-to-face delivery service encounter (Ashforth and Humphrey 1993). The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how sources of job stress for FSP such as perceived customer demands, role ambiguity, role conflict, role overload, and emotional labor and various mediators such as job autonomy, emotional intelligence, and emotion-focused coping directly and indirectly influence job stress and outcome variables such as attitudes, behaviors, physical consequences, emotional exhaustion, job performance, and …

Lawyers And Learning: A Metacognitive Approach To Legal Education, Anthony S. Niedwiecki Sep 2005

Lawyers And Learning: A Metacognitive Approach To Legal Education, Anthony S. Niedwiecki

ExpressO

The article discusses how the current methods of teaching law students hinder their ability to transfer the knowledge and skills learned in law school to the practice of law. I propose integrating learning theory into the law school curriculum, with a specific focus on teaching metacognitive skills. Generally, metacognition refers to having both an awareness of and control over one’s learning and thinking. Professors can help the students gain an awareness of their learning by focusing the students on which learning preferences and experiences they bring to law school and how they can match them to the skills required of …

Loss Functions And Framework For Regional Flood Damage Estimation In Residential Area, Jui-Lin Kang, Ming-Daw Su, Ling-Fang Chang Sep 2005

Loss Functions And Framework For Regional Flood Damage Estimation In Residential Area, Jui-Lin Kang, Ming-Daw Su, Ling-Fang Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The risks of flooding damages for a region increase as the population and economy development increased in that area. Damage assessment and risk analysis are important issues for risk management and hazard mitigation. There are huge amount of data involved in the process of regional damage assessment and most of these data are spatially and temporally distributed. This paper focuses on the use of spatial data for capture of spatial characteristics of damage in natural calamities. Because it affects a large number of persons and families, flood damages in the residential area usually attract major attentions in regional flood hazard …

A Study Of The Development Of Taiwan Maritime Casualty Database System, Solomon Y.H Chen, Kevin K.M Su

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

With the aim of creating a comprehensive maritime casualty database which will facilitate an efficient maritime safety management system for Taiwanese government, this study designs and establishes a Taiwan Maritime Casualty Database System (TMCDS). Following the guidelines from the Code for the Investigation of Marine Casualties and Incidents of the IMO and also through a comparative study resulting from the different maritime investigation authorities, this study structures a comprehensive component of such a database. Furthermore, based on the Structured Query Language (SQL) Command and adopting the technology of Active Server Pages (ASP) and Active Data Object (ADO), a three-tier maritime …
