Dynamic Aeroelastic Analysis Of Wing/Store Configurations, Gregory H. Parker Dec 2005

Dynamic Aeroelastic Analysis Of Wing/Store Configurations, Gregory H. Parker

Theses and Dissertations

Limit-cycle oscillation, or LCO, is an aeroelastic phenomenon characterized by limited amplitude, self-sustaining oscillations produced by fluid-structure interactions. In order to study this phenomenon, code was developed to interface a modal structural model with a commercial computational fluid dynamics program. LCO was simulated for a rectangular wing, referred to as the Goland+ wing. It was determined that the aerodynamic nonlinearity responsible for LCO in the Goland+ wing was the combination of strong trailing-edge and lambda shocks which periodically appear and disappear. This mechanism limited the flow of energy into the structure which quenched the growth of the flutter, resulting …

Model Checking For Roc Regression Analysis, Tianxi Cai, Yingye Zheng Dec 2005

Model Checking For Roc Regression Analysis, Tianxi Cai, Yingye Zheng

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve is a prominent tool for characterizing the accuracy of continuous diagnostic test. To account for factors that might invluence the test accuracy, various ROC regression methods have been proposed. However, as in any regression analysis, when the assumed models do not fit the data well, these methods may render invalid and misleading results. To date practical model checking techniques suitable for validating existing ROC regression models are not yet available. In this paper, we develop cumulative residual based procedures to graphically and numerically assess the goodness-of-fit for some commonly used ROC regression models, and …

Laser-Produced Plasma Euv Light Source With Prepulse Enhancement, Steven Fornaca, Jeffrey Hartlove, Armando Martos, Mark Michaelian, Henry Shields, Samuel Talmadge

UCF Patents

An EUV radiation source that employs a low energy laser pre-pulse and high energy laser main pulse. The pre-pulse generates a weak plasma in the target area the improves laser absorption of the main laser pulse to improve EUB radiation emissions. High energy ion flux is reduced by collisions in the localized target vapor cloud generated by the pre-pulse. Also, the low energy pre-pulse arrives at the target area 20-200 ns before the main pulse for maximum output intensity. The timing between the pre-pulse and the main pulse can be reduced below 160 ns to provide a lower intensity of …

Factors Affecting Breeding Success, George Perry Dec 2005

Factors Affecting Breeding Success, George Perry

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Reproductive failure is a major source of economic loss in the beef industry. The majority of this loss occurs because cows do not become pregnant during a defined breeding season. Therefore, the goal of any breeding program is to maximize the number of females that become pregnant. This means that fertility plays a major role in the success of any breeding program. There are several methods by which fertility can be measured: 1) conception rates (number of animals pregnant/number of animals inseminated), 2) pregnancy rates (number of animals pregnant/number of animals available for breeding), and 3) calving rates (number of …

Fluid And Kinetic Structure Of Magnetic Merging In The Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment, W. H. Matthaeus, C. D. Cothran, Matthew Joseph Landreman , '03, Michael R. Brown

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Measurement of the in-plane Lorentz force and the out-of-plane magnetic field associated with the Hall electric field near the reconnection zone in the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX) confirms expectations, based on simulation, theory and spacecraft data, that the quadrupolar out-of-plane magnetic field is a signature of collisionless effects in magnetic reconnection with a weak guide field.

Conformational Studies Of The Tetramerization Site Of Human Erythroid Spectrin By Cysteine-Scanning Spin-Labeling Epr Methods, Shahila Mehboob, Bing Hao Luo, Wentao Fu, Michael E. Johnson, L. W.M. Fung Dec 2005

Conformational Studies Of The Tetramerization Site Of Human Erythroid Spectrin By Cysteine-Scanning Spin-Labeling Epr Methods, Shahila Mehboob, Bing Hao Luo, Wentao Fu, Michael E. Johnson, L. W.M. Fung

Faculty Publications

We used cysteine-scanning and spin-labeling methods to prepare singly spin labeled recombinant peptides for electron paramagnetic resonance studies of the partial domain regions at the tetramerization site (N-terminal end of α and C-terminal end of β) of erythroid spectrin. The values of the inverse line width parameter (ΔH0-1) from a family of SpoI-1-368Δ peptides scanning residues 21-30 exhibited a periodicity of ∼3.5-4. We used molecular dynamics calculations to show that the asymmetric mobility of this helix is not necessarily due to tertiary contacts, but is likely due to intrinsic properties of helix C′, a helix with a heptad pattern sequence. …

The Relationship Between Frq-Protein Stability And Temperature Compensation In The Neurospora Circadian Clock, Peter Ruoff, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap Dec 2005

The Relationship Between Frq-Protein Stability And Temperature Compensation In The Neurospora Circadian Clock, Peter Ruoff, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap

Dartmouth Scholarship

Temperature compensation is an important property of all biological clocks. In Neurospora crassa, negative-feedback regulation on the frequency (frq) gene's transcription by the FRQ protein plays a central role in the organism's circadian pacemaker. Earlier model calculations predicted that the stability of FRQ should determine the period length of Neurospora's circadian rhythm as well as the rhythm's temperature compensation. Here, we report experimental FRQ protein stabilities in frq mutants at 20 degrees C and 25 degrees C, and estimates of overall activation energies for mutant FRQ protein degradation. The results are consistent with earlier model predictions, i.e., temperature compensation of …

Industrial Technology Education Teachers Perceptions Of National Standards For Technological Literacy In The State Of Arizona, Allan R. Mcrae

Theses and Dissertations

Today, it is becoming increasingly clear that there is a growing interest, concern, and need for technological literacy. To this end, the International Technology Education Association (ITEA) through the Technology for All Americans Project, has developed and promulgated the Standards for Technological Literacy: Content for the Study of Technology. This effort is part of the ongoing initiative to develop technology standards on a national level, and to focus on what every student in grades K-12 should know and be able to do in order to achieve technological literacy (ITEA, 2000). The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived …

Multiple Channel Laser Beam Combination And Phasing Using Stimulated Brillouin Scattering In Optical Fibers, Brent W. Grime Dec 2005

Multiple Channel Laser Beam Combination And Phasing Using Stimulated Brillouin Scattering In Optical Fibers, Brent W. Grime

Theses and Dissertations

Brightness scaling lasers using stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers is explored. A multiple-channel amplifier approach is used to increase the total power of a laser system while avoiding a significant burden on a single channel. The work explores two approaches utilizing both SBS beam cleanup and SBS piston error conjugation. A unique beam combiner that takes advantage of the SBS beam cleanup properties of a long, gradient-index multimode fiber was designed and tested. The beam combiner was developed to combine multiple-channel laser beams simultaneously with high input and output coupling efficiency. The design for the SBS beam combiner …

“The (Cisg) Road Less Travelled”: Case Comment On Grecon Dimter Inc. V. J.R. Normand Inc., Antonin I. Pribetic

ExpressO

At first glance, the Supreme Court of Canada's recent decision in GreCon Dimter Inc. v. J.R. Normand Inc. appears to be a case upholding the primacy of international commercial arbitration, choice of forum and choice of law clauses. Upon closer scrutiny, however, the Supreme Court of Canada failed to consider the application of the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) to the overall dispute. Interestingly, the same choice of forum and choice of law clauses were considered by the United States Court of Appeals a year earlier in GreCon Dimter, Incorporated v. Horner Flooring Company, …

Structural Characteristics Of Carbon Nanofibers For On-Chip Interconnect Applications, Yusuke Ominami, Quoc Ngo, Alexander J. Austin, Hans Yoong, Cary Y. Yang, Alan M. Cassell, Brett A. Cruden, Jun Li, M. Meyyappan

Electrical and Computer Engineering

In this letter, we compare the structures of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition of Ni-catalyzed and Pd-catalyzed carbon nanofibers (CNFs) synthesized for on-chip interconnect applications with scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The Ni-catalyzed CNF has a conventional fiberlike structure and many graphitic layers that are almost parallel to the substrate at the CNF base. In contrast, the Pd-catalyzed CNF has a multiwall nanotubelike structure on the sidewall spanning the entire CNF. The microstructure observed in the Pd-catalyzed fibers at the CNF-metal interface has the potential to lower contact resistance significantly, as our electrical measurements using current-sensing atomic force microscopy indicate. A …
