Diagnosing And Ameliorating Problem Soils : Decision Tree On How To Diagnose And Ameliorate Problem Soils, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Aug 2005

Diagnosing And Ameliorating Problem Soils : Decision Tree On How To Diagnose And Ameliorate Problem Soils, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Agriculture reports

Most cropping paddocks in Western Australia have lower yielding areas within paddocks that perform poorly in most years. If the agronomy and management are good, the poor yields are usually due to soil-related problems. Some of these problems can be corrected or reduced by adopting certain proven practices. However, it is important to identify and quantify the problem so that decisions can be made on whether amelioration is possible and economically feasible. The objective is to provide a simploe decision tool for farmers and advisers to use in identifying and quantifying soil problems in agricultural soils in Western Australia. It …

Knowledge And Perception Of North Dakota Nurses Regarding Palliative Care, Nancy Joyner Aug 2005

Knowledge And Perception Of North Dakota Nurses Regarding Palliative Care, Nancy Joyner

Theses and Dissertations

Palliative care, also known as comfort care, involves the holistic care of patients when curative treatment is not effective. The principal factors of palliative care include the aggressive treatment of pain and other symptoms, including physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual problems. Nurses spend more time with patients and their families than any other health care professional, placing them in a position to provide palliative care in a variety of different settings. This requires nurses to have a sound knowledge base in this specialty. Not all nurses, however, are adequately prepared for or comfortable with palliative care.

The purpose of …

Investigation Of A Cognitive Dissonance Intervention Versus A Psychoeducational Placebo Control: Testing The Effectiveness Of Prevention Programming For Eating Disorders, Valerie L. Krysanski Aug 2005

Investigation Of A Cognitive Dissonance Intervention Versus A Psychoeducational Placebo Control: Testing The Effectiveness Of Prevention Programming For Eating Disorders, Valerie L. Krysanski

Theses and Dissertations

As psychoeducational eating disorder prevention programs have not been shown to reduce eating pathology, these programs are well-suited to use as placebo controls against interventions that have been shown to be effective. The proposed study compared a cognitive dissonance based intervention to a psychoeducational placebo control group with college women. Seventy-five college women who had elevated scores on a measure of thin ideal internalization, placing them at increased risk for developing an eating disorder, were randomly assigned to either a psychoeducational intervention (n = 35) or a dissonance-based intervention (n = 40). Each intervention was composed of 3, 1-hour sessions, …

Microencapsulating Properties Of Trehalose And Of Its Blends With Sucrose And Fructose, Marina Cerdeira, Silvana Martini, Maria L. Herrera Aug 2005

Microencapsulating Properties Of Trehalose And Of Its Blends With Sucrose And Fructose, Marina Cerdeira, Silvana Martini, Maria L. Herrera

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

A low melting fraction of milk fat (LMF), with a dropping point (MDP) of 16.7 °C, was encapsulated by freeze-drying emulsions formulated with trehalose or its blends with 30 wt% lactose or sucrose as hydrophilic phase, and with a mixed of 50 wt% of the palmitic sucrose esters (SE) β-170 and β-1670 as emulsifiers. Trehalose or trehalose/sucrose matrices were very efficient to encapsulate LMF (retention values were 82.8%± 3.2% and 90.5%± 3.7%, dry basis, respectively), whereas trehalose/lactose showed a significant decline in initial retention (42.5%± 2.5%, dry basis). The role of emulsion stability, water content, physical state of the matrix, …

Equity Measures And Systems Reform As Tools For Reducing Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Health Care, Sidney D. Watson Aug 2005

Equity Measures And Systems Reform As Tools For Reducing Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Health Care, Sidney D. Watson

All Faculty Scholarship

Many health care quality regulators, including officials of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and other agencies, have embraced systems reform—largely through mandates that require health care providers to implement Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives. Currently, however, no QAPI requirements stipulate that individual plans or providers measure racial and ethnic disparities. Performance measurements that do not track data by race and ethnicity, the author says, not only miss inequities but are likely to overlook promising techniques for reaching patients of particular racial and ethnic backgrounds. Incorporating equity measures into existing QAPI requirements, the report finds, would not …

Stationary Phase Induction Of Rpos In Enteric Bacteria, Matthew Louis Hirsch Aug 2005

Stationary Phase Induction Of Rpos In Enteric Bacteria, Matthew Louis Hirsch

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In enteric bacteria, stress adaptation is mediated by the RpoS protein, one of several sigma-factors that, in association with RNA polymerase, collectively allow a tailored transcriptional response to environmental cues. Stress stimuli including low temperature, osmotic shock, and starvation all result in a substantial increase in RpoS abundance. Perhaps the most pronounced affect is observed during growth to stationary phase (SP) in rich medium. The mechanism of regulation depends on the specific signal, but may occur at the level of transcription, translation, protein activity or targeted proteolysis. In both Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica cultured in rich undefined medium, the …

Does Peripheral Concentration Of Progesterone Affect Ovulation And Lambing Rates In Barbados Blackbelly Ewes?, Ezra Devonish Aug 2005

Does Peripheral Concentration Of Progesterone Affect Ovulation And Lambing Rates In Barbados Blackbelly Ewes?, Ezra Devonish

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The hypothesis that concentration of progesterone influences number of follicles that mature during estrus, and thus ovulation rate, was tested in cycling ewes. Ewes were assigned at random to three treatments, and bred at estrus after treatment. Ewes in low (LP) and high (HP) groups received exogenous progesterone from day 4 to 14; control ewes (MP) were untreated. The LP ewes were given PGF2alpha on day 6 to regress corpora lutea (CL). Numbers of follicles and CL were observed by transrectal ultrasonography. Fewer follicles disappeared at estrus in ewes on HP than in MP or LP. Ewes on LP had …

Prediction Of Forage Intake And Production Of Steers In A Winter Forage System, Taryn Romanczak

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Currently there are no means to accurately predict intake in grazing animals. Two experiments were conducted to determine and validate the use of intake markers in grazing ruminants as well as to compare performance of steers in winter forage systems. Six Angus-Hereford steers were halter and fecal harness broke. Entities commonly found in forages and used as markers were evaluated. Experiment 1 was conducted during the summer 2004, at the West Virginia University Livestock Farm, using animals in a confined area. Steers were fed timothy or orchardgrass hay chopped to fine or coarse lengths. Experiment 2 was conducted at the …

Obesity has been associated with many health concerns such as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes mellitus in both American Indian adults and children. The purpose of this study is to identify predictor variables that may be contributing to the development or possibly maintenance of obesity in American Indian children. …

Approaches To Improve The Ovulatory Response And Reproductive Performance Of Ewes Introduced To Rams During Seasonal Anestrus, Katherine Mead Jordan Aug 2005

Approaches To Improve The Ovulatory Response And Reproductive Performance Of Ewes Introduced To Rams During Seasonal Anestrus, Katherine Mead Jordan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Three experiments were conducted to test hypotheses relative to the ability of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and melatonin to improve responses of anestrous ewes to rams. Treatment with GnRH two days after treatment with progesterone at introduction of rams did not increase ovulation, pregnancy or lambing rates. Treatment with GnRH on days two, seven, or both after introduction of rams, resulted in ovulation, pregnancy, and lambing rates that did not differ. In another trial, GnRH four days before, or four days before and one day after introduction of rams did not improve a consistently high ovulatory response to introduction of …

Healthcare Resources For Older Adults In A Medium Sized Community, Ashley Nielson Aug 2005

Healthcare Resources For Older Adults In A Medium Sized Community, Ashley Nielson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Healthcare has become a large concern for a number of older Americans. With increases in healthcare costs and complex programs such as, Medicare, Medicaid, Medigap insurance policies and community programs, many older Americans are left worrying where they will find the money and resources to provide for themselves and their healthcare needs. Medicare, Medicaid and community care resources help to offset individual healthcare costs, but they are often not enough. The programs are complex and confusing and are limited in the care they provide.

Lack Of Association Of Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase 677c>T Mutation With Coronary Artery Disease In A Pakistani Population, M Perwaiz Iqbal, Tasneem Fatima, Siddiqa Parveen, Farzana A. Yousuf, Majid Shafiq, Naseema Mehboobali, Abrar H. Khan, Iqbal Azam, Philippe M. Frossard Jul 2005

Lack Of Association Of Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase 677c>T Mutation With Coronary Artery Disease In A Pakistani Population, M Perwaiz Iqbal, Tasneem Fatima, Siddiqa Parveen, Farzana A. Yousuf, Majid Shafiq, Naseema Mehboobali, Abrar H. Khan, Iqbal Azam, Philippe M. Frossard

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Pakistanis belong to the South Asian population which has the highest known rate of coronary artery disease. Folic acid deficiency also appears to be highly prevalent in this population. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677C>T polymorphism decreases the activity of this enzyme and can be associated with mild to moderate hyperhomocysteinemia in homozygotes, particularly when there is folic acid deficiency, as well as with coronary artery disease. To assess the value of genotyping the MTHFR 677C>T dimorphism, we carried out a case-control study of dimorphism 677C>T for putative association with myocardial infarction (MI) among Pakistani nationals. We investigated a …

Comparing The Effects Of Granivorous Rodents On Persistence Of Indian Ricegrass (Oryzopsis Hymenoides) Seeds In Mixed And Monospecific Seed Patches, Joseph A. Veech, Stephen H. Jenkins Jul 2005

Comparing The Effects Of Granivorous Rodents On Persistence Of Indian Ricegrass (Oryzopsis Hymenoides) Seeds In Mixed And Monospecific Seed Patches, Joseph A. Veech, Stephen H. Jenkins

Western North American Naturalist

In desert environments seeds are often heterogeneously distributed in small patches that vary in number of seed species and in seed density. Because seed harvest by rodents is often density dependent (a larger proportion of seeds is removed from high-density seed patches than from low-density patches), the proportion of residual or post-harvest seeds should be greater in low-density patches. In addition, seed preference can affect harvest. We tested whether the residual proportion of a highly preferred seed (Indian ricegrass, Oryzopsis hymenoides) was less when in a seed patch with a 2nd species (mixed-species patch) than when in a monospecific …

Nutritional Condition Of Elk In Rocky Mountain National Park, Louis C. Bender, John G. Cook Jul 2005

Nutritional Condition Of Elk In Rocky Mountain National Park, Louis C. Bender, John G. Cook

Western North American Naturalist

We tested the hypothesis that elk in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) were at ecological carrying capacity by determining herd-specific levels of nutritional condition and fecundity. Ingesta-free body fat levels in adult cows that were lactating were 10.6% (s = 1.7; range = 6.2–15.4) and 7.7% (s = 0.5; range = 5.9–10.1) in November 2001 for the Horseshoe and Moraine Park herds, respectively. Cows that were not lactating were able to accrue significantly more body fat: 14.0% (s = 1.1; range = 7.7–19.3) and 11.5% (s = 0.8; range = 8.6–15.1) for the Horseshoe and Moraine …

Expanding The Science Of Successful Aging: Older Adults Living In Continuing Care Retirement Communities (Ccrcs), Kathryn H. Petrossi Jul 2005

Expanding The Science Of Successful Aging: Older Adults Living In Continuing Care Retirement Communities (Ccrcs), Kathryn H. Petrossi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rowe and Kahns theory of successful aging identifies three main components of aging successfully: reducing the risk of disease and disability, maintaining high cognitive and physical function, and engagement with life. While there is compelling evidence that suggests the legitimacy of this concept in the 50-75 year old community dwelling population, three areas of expansion are necessary: 1.) programmatic research; 2.) extending the existing research samples to include older samples and those living in continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs); and 3.) the integration of data collection and analysis to move beyond investigation of just one successful aging outcome to include …

Determining The Probable Responsibility Of The Head Coach And Fitness Coach For Match Outcomes Using Bayes’ Theorem, Mahfoodh Faleh Hassan, Abdul Amir Hashim Allawi, Firas Hadi Khalaf Jul 2005

Determining The Probable Responsibility Of The Head Coach And Fitness Coach For Match Outcomes Using Bayes’ Theorem, Mahfoodh Faleh Hassan, Abdul Amir Hashim Allawi, Firas Hadi Khalaf

Modern Sport

Bayes' Theorem represents a fundamental principle in probability and statistics. It describes how to update the probability of a hypothesis based on new evidence. It provides a mathematical rule for reversing conditional probabilities, allowing us to determine the probability of a cause given an observed effect. Bayes' Theorem is also considered one of the key tools in machine learning applications. This study uses Bayes' Theorem to determine the probability of a team's loss and the percentage responsibility of the head coach and fitness coach. Its importance lies in developing a probabilistic model to reveal the likelihood of defeat and the …

Determining The Impact Of Food Price And Income Changes On Obesity, Christiane Schroeter, Jayson Lusk, Wallace Tyner Jul 2005

Determining The Impact Of Food Price And Income Changes On Obesity, Christiane Schroeter, Jayson Lusk, Wallace Tyner

Agribusiness

Despite the significant rise in obesity in the U.S., economic research on obesity is still in its infancy. This paper employs a microeconomic approach to investigate the effects of price and income changes on weight in an effort to determine how a high-calorie food tax, a low-calorie food subsidy, and/or income changes affect body weight. Although raising the price of high-calorie food will likely lead to decreased demand for such goods; it is not clear that such an outcome will actually reduce weight. The model developed in this paper identifies conditions under which price and income changes are mostly likely …
