Effectiveness Of A Program To Increase Fruit And Vegetable Consumption, Katherine L. Cason Aug 2005

Effectiveness Of A Program To Increase Fruit And Vegetable Consumption, Katherine L. Cason

Journal of Extension

Americans do not ordinarily consume the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables, thereby placing them at risk for the development of chronic diseases. EFNEP and the South East Produce Council implemented a program designed to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables by low-income audiences reached through EFNEP. Pre-program surveys provided a profile of the families' fresh produce purchases and consumption level. Post-program data indicates that the program participants made a significant increase in their consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Extraocular Muscle Activity, Rapid Eye Movements And The Development Of Active And Quiet Sleep, Adele M. H. Seelke, Andrew J. Gall, Karl Æ. Karlsson, Mark S. Blumberg

Faculty Publications

Rapid eye movements (REMs), traditionally measured using the electrooculogram (EOG), help to characterize active sleep in adults. In early infancy, however, they are not clearly expressed. Here we measured extraocular muscle activity in infant rats at 3 days of age (P3), P8 and P14-15 in order to assess the ontogeny of REMs and their relationship with other forms of sleep-related phasic activity. We found that the causal relationship between extraocular muscle twitches and REMs strengthened during the first two postnatal weeks, reflecting increased control of the extraocular muscles over eye movements. As early as P3, however, phasic bursts of extraocular …

The Professionalization Of Naturopathic Medicine, Mindy Michelle Tyson Aug 2005

The Professionalization Of Naturopathic Medicine, Mindy Michelle Tyson

Theses and Dissertations

Use and interest in naturopathic medicine, a comprehensive alternative healing modality, has been on the increase in the United States for more than a decade. Proponents of the health discipline are working to move it from its current position as a partially professionalized heterodox medical system into mainstream medicine in the United States. Advocates for this form of primary care medicine claim that through its use of natural therapeutics and preventive medicine, naturopathic medicine has the ability to curb the ever- escalating costs of American health care and to slow the epidemic of preventable diseases occurring in the United States. …

Asymptomatic Pons Tuberculoma In An Infant With Miliary Tuberculosis, Gulnar Uysal, Tugba Gursoy, Umut Altunc, Akif Guven

Saudi Medical Journal

Miliary tuberculosis is caused by the hematogenous spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and consists of 1.5% of all tuberculosis cases. It is seen mostly in infants because of the immature immune system, and central nervous system CNS involvement is not rare. Tuberculomas are rarely seen in the localized form of CNS tuberculosis, and only 4% are localized in the brain stem. We report a 4.5-month-old infant who deteriorated during follow-up with the diagnosis of cytomegalovirus pneumonia, and afterwards received the diagnosis of miliary tuberculosis. Although the baby had no neurologic abnormality and cerebrospinal fluid findings were normal, cranial MRI revealed contrast …

Assessing The Educational Needs And Interests Of The Hispanic Population: The Role Of Extension, Susan Farner, M Elena Rhoads, German Cutz, Barbara Farner

Journal of Extension

Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group in the United States and face unique problems concerning language and citizenship. However, institutions do not yet know how best to deliver services to this group or understand what services are needed. Although many programs designed for Hispanics exist, especially in urban areas, there is little documentation that they have been evaluated and are successful in serving the population they target. The focus group study described here was conducted to better understand what kind of information Hispanics in an urban setting are seeking and how best to disseminate information to them.

Selecting Recipes To Enhance Educational Programming--Application Of Formative Research Methods, Sharon Francey Robinson, William Wong, A Shanna Wright Rodgers, Mary Kinney Bielamowicz

Journal of Extension

Recipe demonstration often accompanies educational programming. Formative research methods can be used when selecting recipes to enhance an educational experience. The use of recipes and food demonstrations should be consistent with identified educational goals. Our process resulted in a stepwise culling of recipes and the identification of recipe categories that supported our learning goal. We enabled input from peer educators, agents, and clients by soliciting informal and formal feedback through methods such as survey instruments, informal discussions, and structured interviews. This and similar approaches to recipe selection may engage educators in the judicious use of recipes to augment educational programming.

Susceptibility to Cry3Bb1 toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) was determined for western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, neonates from both laboratory and field populations collected from across the Corn Belt. Rootworm larvae were exposed to artificial diet treated with increasing Cry3Bb1 concentrations, and mortality and growth inhibition were evaluated after 4Ð7 d. The range of variation in Bt susceptibility indicated by growth inhibition was similar to that indicated by mortality. Although interpopulation variation in susceptibility was observed, the magnitude of the differences was comparable with the variability observed between generations of the same population. In general, the toxin was …

A Bioarchaeological Investigation Of Two Unmarked Graveyards In Bridgetown, Barbados, Christopher Crain

Masters Theses

In 1996 and 1999 two previously unknown graveyards were discovered in separate sections of Bridgetown, Barbados. Emergency excavations of the sites recovered the skeletal material of at least thirty-two (MNI=32) individuals as well as a number of grave goods. While the artifacts were from the historical period there was continuing speculation as to the ancestry of the individuals interred within these graveyards. During the summer of 2004 the first preliminary osteological analysis of the skeletal material was conducted to identify the biological characteristics, including the ancestral affiliation, of these individuals. The analysis determined that the individuals interred at these sites …

At The Whim Of The State: Neoliberalism And Nongovernmental Organizations In Guerrero, Mexico, William Yaworsky Aug 2005

At The Whim Of The State: Neoliberalism And Nongovernmental Organizations In Guerrero, Mexico, William Yaworsky

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper examines the relationship between the Secretaría de Desarrollo Social (SEDESOL) and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in the Chilapa region of Guerrero, Mexico. I argue that the Mexican state via SEDESOL has effectively harnessed NGOs to perform as regional pillars of neoliberal reform initiatives. The intimacy of this relationship raises serious questions for those who see NGOs performing as vehicles for furthering local or regional "autonomy." Instead, I argue that regional NGOs are key role players in the deepening incorporation of communities into the global industrial economy.
