A Comparison Of Diets And Water Agitation Methods For Larval Culture Of The Edible Sea Urchin, Tripneustes Ventricosus (Echinodermata: Echinoidea), Ray Wolcott, Charles G. Messing

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Tripneustes ventricosus (Lamarck, 1816) has been harvested for human consumption in the Caribbean for centuries, where harvest rates occasionally exceed sustainability. Historically a backreef and grass-bed urchin, the species has recently been observed on the forereef where it appears to control macroalgal growth in the absence of Diadema antillarum (Philippi, 1845) (Woodley and Gayle, 1999). Large-scale culturing has the potential to produce T. ventricosus in sufficient numbers for remediation of degraded coral reefs, restocking of nearshore habitats, and development of an aquaculture industry for one or more Caribbean islands. We report the first successful culturing of T. ventricosus from fertilization …

Analysis Of The Distribution And Diversity In Recent Hawaiian Volcanic Deposits Of A Putative Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenase Large Subunit Gene, Kari E. Dunfield, Gary M. King Sep 2005

Analysis Of The Distribution And Diversity In Recent Hawaiian Volcanic Deposits Of A Putative Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenase Large Subunit Gene, Kari E. Dunfield, Gary M. King

Faculty Publications

A putative carbon monoxide dehydrogenase large subunit gene (BMS putative coxL) was amplified from genomic DNA extracts of four recent (42-300 year old) Hawaiian volcanic deposits by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Sequence databases derived from clone libraries constructed using PCR products were analysed phylogenetically and statistically. These analyses indicated that each of the deposits supported distinct BMS putative coxL gene assemblages. Statistical analyses also showed that the youngest deposit (42 years old) contained the least diverse sequences (P < 0.05), but that diversity did not vary significantly among three older deposits with ages from about 108-300 years. Although diversity indices did not vary among the older deposits, mismatch analyses suggested population structures increased in complexity with increasing deposit age. At each of the sites, most of the clone sequences appeared to originate from Proteobacteria not currently represented in culture or recognized as CO oxidizers. © 2005 Society for Applied Microbiology and Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

A Review By Anne Lair Of French Women Don’T Get Fat, By Mirielle Guiliano, Anne Lair

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

One of this year's bestsellers in the nation remains French Women Don't Get Fat. More than one million copies have been sold already, and this tremendous success may be attributed to the book's topic, food, which is also one of the 'hottest' topics to be studied in terms of anthropology, culture, film, and literature within the last fifteen years. While the volume has received much attention by the mainstream media in the United States, I should like to add a different perspective to such voices: I shall place it in the context of French culture, analyze its popularity in …

Evolution Of Morphological Integration: Developmental Accommodation Of Stress-Induced Variation, Alexander V. Badyaev, Kerry R. Foresman, Rebecca L. Young Sep 2005

Evolution Of Morphological Integration: Developmental Accommodation Of Stress-Induced Variation, Alexander V. Badyaev, Kerry R. Foresman, Rebecca L. Young

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Extreme environmental change during growth often results in an increase in developmental abnormalities in the morphology of an organism. The evolutionary significance of such stress-induced variation depends on the recurrence of a stressor and on the degree to which developmental errors can be accommodated by an organism's ontogeny without significant loss of function. We subjected populations of four species of soricid shrews to an extreme environment during growth and measured changes in the patterns of integration and accommodation of stress-induced developmental errors in a complex of mandibular traits. Adults that grew under an extreme environment had lower integration of morphological …
