Revised Adult Treatment Panel Iii Guidelines And Cardiovascular Disease Mortality In Men Attending A Preventive Medical Clinic, Chris I. Ardern, Peter T. Katzmarzyk, Ian Janssen, Timothy S. Church, Steven N. Blair

Faculty Publications

Background - National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines recommended therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC) and drug therapy to reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. These guidelines have been revised recently (ATP III-R); however, the risk of CVD mortality within each intervention window and the effects of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and metabolic syndrome on CVD mortality within the framework of the guidelines are unknown.

Methods and Results - Risk factor and CRF data from 19,125 men (aged 20 to 79 years) who attended a preventive medical clinic between 1979 and 1995 were used. Mortality follow-up was completed until December 31, …

Structure Elucidation Of Bioactive Compounds Isolated From Endophytes Of Alstonia Scholaris And Acmena Graveolens, Nicholas James Hundley Sep 2005

Structure Elucidation Of Bioactive Compounds Isolated From Endophytes Of Alstonia Scholaris And Acmena Graveolens, Nicholas James Hundley

Theses and Dissertations

Alstonia scholaris is an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia and Australia. It is commonly used as a medicinal plant throughout these regions. In the present study, an endophyte of the genus Xylaria was isolated from a stem of Alstonia scholaris, its mycelia and exudate extracted, and the extract assayed for growth inhibition of HeLa cancer cells in vitro. Several known compounds were isolated and identified based on NMR, infrared, and mass spectral data. The compounds identified are 19,20-epoxycytochalasin C; 19,20epoxycytochalasin D; and xylobovide. Two other compounds, fusaric acid and dehydrofusaric acid, were discovered in an endophyte of the Hypocreales …

Feeding Corn To Beef Cows, Cody Wright Sep 2005

Feeding Corn To Beef Cows, Cody Wright

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

In many western cattle operations, forages have traditionally been considered the most practical feedstuffs for wintering beef cows. However, in certain situations, the nutrient content of standing or harvested forages may be inadequate to meet the nutritional requirements of the beef cow for maintenance, gestation, or lactation. The availability of standing or harvested forages also may be limited, especially during drought years and(or) severe winters when the cost of medium- to low-quality forages may reach $80 to $100 per ton. Feeding corn grain may represent an economically viable alternative in each of these scenarios.

Feeding Scab-Infected Wheat To Livestock, Cody Wright, Alvaro Garcia, Jeff Held, Bob Thaler, Russ Daly, Martin Draper

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Fusarium head blight, also called scab, is a disease of many small grain crops including wheat, barley, and rye. Oats can also be affected but generally with less damage. Scab is caused by the fungus Fusarium. Several species of Fusarium can cause the disease, but far and away the most common in South Dakota is Fusarium graminearum. This is the same fungus that causes Gibberella stalk rot in corn. When F. graminearum infections occurs in corn ears, the disease is referred to as Gibberella ear rot; it does not arrest kernel development. Generally, warm and wet conditions at wheat flowering …

Inference On Survival Data With Covariate Measurement Error - An Imputation-Based Approach, Yi Li, Louise Ryan Sep 2005

Inference On Survival Data With Covariate Measurement Error - An Imputation-Based Approach, Yi Li, Louise Ryan

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We propose a new method for fitting proportional hazards models with error-prone covariates. Regression coefficients are estimated by solving an estimating equation that is the average of the partial likelihood scores based on imputed true covariates. For the purpose of imputation, a linear spline model is assumed on the baseline hazard. We discuss consistency and asymptotic normality of the resulting estimators, and propose a stochastic approximation scheme to obtain the estimates. The algorithm is easy to implement, and reduces to the ordinary Cox partial likelihood approach when the measurement error has a degenerative distribution. Simulations indicate high efficiency and robustness. …

Encouraging Moderation In State Policies On Collecting Food Stamp Claims, David A. Super Sep 2005

Encouraging Moderation In State Policies On Collecting Food Stamp Claims, David A. Super

Faculty Scholarship

Regulations issued by the Food and Nutrition Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture in July 2000 promote efficient and effective food stamp claims collection by the states. These regulations give states significant flexibility in tailoring their procedures on filing claims. States can incorporate waiver and compromise policies that increase efficiency and can serve low-income households.

A Comparison Of Outcomes After 8 And 12 Weeks Of Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Michael Fillyaw, Kim Hasegawa, Mary Anne Riley, Burton D. Tepfer

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Purpose: To compare changes in functional exercise capacity, dyspnea, functional status, and depression in patients after 8 weeks (24 sessions) and 12 weeks (36 sessions) of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). Methods: A prospective sample of 31 participants in our PR program completed outcome measures prior to and during the eighth and twelfth weeks of the program. The 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and a stairs climbing test (ST) measured functional exercise capacity. Perceived dyspnea (PD) was measured with a 6-20 scale. The Pulmonary Function Status Scale (PFSS) measured functional status, and the Cardiac Depression Scale (CDS) measured depression. Results : Statistically significant …

Rose Productivity And Physiological Responses To Different Substrates For Soil-Less Culture, C. Samartzidis, Tala Awada, E. Maloupa, K. Radoglou, H.-I. A. Constantinidou

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Cultivation of roses in various soil-less media was studied with the aim to identify the optimum soil condition for rose production. Madelon roses grafted on rootstock of Rosa indica var. major were transplanted to polyethylene bags containing zeolite and perlite (at ratios of 25z:75p, 50z:50p, 75z:25p and 100z:0p, v/v) in a climate-controlled greenhouse. Net photosynthesis (Anet), stomatal conductance (gs) and water use efficiency (WUE) of roses were followed for 5 months. Flower production and quality were recorded in three flowering flushes during a 5-month period. Analysis of variance of repeated measurements showed that even …
