People Living With, Not Dying From Disease: Patient Empowerment Through Anti-Retroviral Therapy And Possibilities For Social Change, Xin Wei Ngiam Oct 2005

People Living With, Not Dying From Disease: Patient Empowerment Through Anti-Retroviral Therapy And Possibilities For Social Change, Xin Wei Ngiam

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In South Africa today, it is estimated that there are 6.5 million people living with HIV/AIDS, at least half a million of whom require urgent treatment. On the continent of Africa as a whole the numbers are even more startling. Unfortunately, although the South African government has now committed itself to rolling out anti-retroviral therapy through the public healthcare system, progress has been slower than expected. Yet in numerous sites around South Africa, rollout centres have been established successfully, even in the most rural parts of the country. These programmes rely on existing community initiatives, community health workers and volunteers, …

Evolution Of Sexual Dimorphism And Male Dimorphism In The Expression Of Beetle Horns: Phylogenetic Evidence For Modularity, Evolutionary Lability, And Constraint, Douglas J. Emlen, John Hunt, Leigh W. Simmons

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Beetle horns are enlarged outgrowths of the head or thorax that are used as weapons in contests over access to mates. Horn development is typically confined to males (sexual dimorphism) and often only to the largest males (male dimorphism). Both types of dimorphism result from endocrine threshold mechanisms that coordinate cell proliferation near the end of the larval period. Here, we map the presence/absence of each type of dimorphism onto a recent phylogeny for the genus Onthophagits (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) to explore how horn development has changed over time. Our results provide empirical support for several recent predictions regarding the evolutionary …

Conditional Cash Transfers: Progress Towards The Millennium Development Goals, Blase Kornacki Oct 2005

Conditional Cash Transfers: Progress Towards The Millennium Development Goals, Blase Kornacki

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Conditional cash transfer programs are transforming Latin America’s approach to social welfare. CCTs provide money to families living in extreme poverty in exchange for the commitment to invest in human capital. The programs aim at replacing the “traditional supply-side mechanisms” with “demand-side interventions to directly support beneficiaries.” Traditional mechanisms battled poverty with subsidies or direct investments in public goods, whereas the new approach channels support directly to the people and promotes investment in human capital, using market approaches as an incentive to use social services such as primary and secondary education and local health centers.

Protecting Children And Their Mothers: The Millennium Development Goals Push Lofty Heath Targets, Frank Pigott Oct 2005

Protecting Children And Their Mothers: The Millennium Development Goals Push Lofty Heath Targets, Frank Pigott

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

The United Nations Millennium Development Goals Report 2005 (“UN report”) shows that child mortality is strongly related to poverty level, as poor countries have less access to advances in child survival treatments than wealthier countries. Five diseases are responsible for fifty percent of all deaths of children under five – pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, measles, and AIDS. The data suggests that nutrition is the most important preventative measure, because malnutrition weakens the immune system. According to the UN report, safe water, better sanitation, education, and higher income levels can also increase a child’s life expectancy. Other measures to reduce child mortality …

Access To Justice And The Right To Adequate Food: Implementing Millennium Development Goal One, Marc J. Cohen, Mary Ashby Brown

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

The first MDG adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2000 is to “eradicate extreme poverty and hunger,” with a target of “[reducing] by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger.” The 1996 World Food Summit (“WFS”) had similarly agreed on “reducing the number of undernourished people to half their present level no later than 2015.”

A Preliminary Test Of A Student-Centered Intervention On Increasing Physical Activity In Underserved Adolescents, Dawn K. Wilson, Alexandra E. Evans, Joel Williams, Gary Mixon, John R. Sirard, Russell R. Pate

Faculty Publications

Background - Previous studies have shown that choice and self-initiated behavior changes are important for increasing intrinsic motivation and physical activity (PA), however, little of this research has focused on underserved adolescents.

Purpose - This study examined the effects of a 4-week student-centered intervention on increasing PA in underserved adolescents.

Methods - Twenty-eight students in the intervention school were matched (on race, percentage on free or reduced-price lunch program, gender, and age) with 20 students from another school who served as the comparison group (30 girls, 18 boys; ages 10-12 years; 83% African American; 83% on free or reduced-price lunch). …

A Systematic Review On The Role Of Diet And Nutritional Supplements For Prevention Of Cardiovascular Diseases, Yap-Hang Chan, Hung-Fat Tse, Sheung-Wai Li, Chu-Pak Lau

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

According to the diet-heart hypothesis, dietary factors play a pivotal role in atherogenesis. Modulation of the diet has therefore been considered a means to achieve better cardiovascular health and a major subject of public health importance. Five major types of diet have been identified: the low-carbohydrate diet, low glycemic index diet, very-low-fat diet, the Mediterranean diet and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. Clinical studies have shown that none of these diets are universally efficacious. The results from various clinical trials on the use of diet to prevent cardiovascular diseases are commonly conflicting due to unadjusted caloric intake …

Dental Hygiene Participation In Managing Incipient And Hidden Caries, Caren M. Barnes Oct 2005

Dental Hygiene Participation In Managing Incipient And Hidden Caries, Caren M. Barnes

College of Dentistry: Faculty Publications

The essence of dental hygiene practice includes the use of preventive and therapeutic methods for the promotion of good health and to prevent and control oral diseases. Dental hygienists actively promote the prevention of oral diseases through patient education that encourages self-care prevention of dental caries, supplemented by needs-related professional preventive services. Equally significant in the scope of dental hygiene practice are thorough oral examinations for disease detection. Although dental hygienists do not legally or definitively diagnose dental caries, they are responsible for detecting caries at all stages of the disease, recognizing caries risk factors, and planning management strategies. Because …

Agroecology Of The Naso-Teribe: The Management And Conservation Of Traditional Agroecological Systems, Maisie Ganz Oct 2005

Agroecology Of The Naso-Teribe: The Management And Conservation Of Traditional Agroecological Systems, Maisie Ganz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The term “agroecology” is used to describe the sustainable design and management of agricultural systems by the application of ecological concepts and principles. The resulting agroecosystems, often practiced by indigenous or poor farmers in marginal environments without access to external technologies, are systems of food production that integrate cultivated crops into surrounding ecosystems. The Naso-Teribe, an indigenous community of approximately 3,800 individuals living in the forests of western Panama, practice a complex agroecological system. The Naso farmers’ agricultural practices contribute to, and are dependent on, the biodiversity of resources available. The ways in which Naso farmers manage, maintain, and preserve …
