Comparison Of Perceived And Actual Nutrition Needs Of College-Age Students, Amanda M. Goetze

Masters Theses

The purpose of this research was to assess the needs of Eastern Illinois University students regarding nutrition-related topics of concern and programming methods. Four hundred ninety-two students and four health professionals participated. The results indicate that students consume grains and vegetables in less than recommended amounts, fruits and dairy products within the recommended amounts, and meats, sweets, oils, and fats, and alcohol in excess. Nutritional issues affecting these students include management of weight, consumption of alcohol, and low intakes of iron, folate, and vitamin C. The perceptions of health professionals were not able to be compared to those of students; …

The Effects Of Habitat Quality On Abiotic Factors And Heterotrophic Microbial Activity In A Freshwater Stream System, Daphne Kampinga Jan 2005

The Effects Of Habitat Quality On Abiotic Factors And Heterotrophic Microbial Activity In A Freshwater Stream System, Daphne Kampinga

Masters Theses

Much of the Midwest, as well as Illinois' landscape, has largely been transformed from its original habitat of prairie, savanna, wetlands, and forest into corn and soybean fields and urban areas. As a result, less than 1% of the original habitat in Illinois remains intact today. These modifications can lead to habitat fragmentation and affect riparian zone vegetation, which is an important link between the land-water interface and influences processes such as organic matter inputs and water temperature regimes. As a result of fragmentation, riparian zone loss has occurred and catchment vegetation associated with streams can vary from agricultural fields, …

Diet Composition Of Juvenile Fish Reflects Adaptation To Altered Prey Communities In A Reservoir Receiving Thermal Effluent, Brian A. Metzke Jan 2005

Diet Composition Of Juvenile Fish Reflects Adaptation To Altered Prey Communities In A Reservoir Receiving Thermal Effluent, Brian A. Metzke

Masters Theses

Survival, and ultimately recruitment. of planktivorous juvenile fish is related to prey availability. Temperature regime and introduction of exotic species can change zooplankton community dynamics and alter trophic relationships between juvenile fish and their prey. Newton Lake, located in Jasper County, Illinois is used as a cooling reservoir for a coal burning power plant. Thermal effluent produced by the power plant is released into only one of two reservoir arms creating a temperature gradient. Newton Lake also contains Daphnia lumholtzi, an exotic zooplankter thought to create feeding difficulties for gape-limited predators like juvenile fish. It is within the context of …

Hormone Replacement Therapy: Attitudes, Knowledge, And Usage By Perimenopausal And Postmenopausal Women, Misty Lynn Rhoads Jan 2005

Hormone Replacement Therapy: Attitudes, Knowledge, And Usage By Perimenopausal And Postmenopausal Women, Misty Lynn Rhoads

Masters Theses

With an increased life expectancy, women are living an average of 30 yearars after the set of menopause. With the change in life, there is a significant change in t onse the production of female hormones which causes unpleasant side effects that includes hot flashes, osteoporosis, nausea, and palpitations. Hormone replacement therapy was promoted to provide relief for women. However, research has shown that HRT may increase the risk of endometrial cancer, strokes and breast cancer. Therefore, women are given contradictory information concerning HRT. The current study explored the attitudes, knowledge and intentions of perimenopausal and postmenopausal women concerning hormone …

Development Of A Process Of Addition Of Tricalcium Phosphate From Burnt Phosphate Rock In Feed For Animal Nutrition, Luis Fernando Nogales Grágeda Jan 2005

Development Of A Process Of Addition Of Tricalcium Phosphate From Burnt Phosphate Rock In Feed For Animal Nutrition, Luis Fernando Nogales Grágeda

Theses and Dissertations

This study took place in Bolivia with the purpose of using thermally treated Capinota phosphate rock as a phosphorous supplement in balanced feed diets. The objective was to produce a natural phosphate substance that would be more easily accessible to the local population than commercial feed supplements. An additional objective of this study was to increase the availability of the low-fluoride phosphorous. The biological assays indicated that the diet with the added burned phosphoric rock produced similar yields to those using a commercial feed supplement (dicalcium phosphate). This indicates that the locally manufactured product, by partial acidification, can compete with …

Lifelong Learning For Older Persons In Hong Kong, Sze Sze, Stephanie Hui Jan 2005

Lifelong Learning For Older Persons In Hong Kong, Sze Sze, Stephanie Hui

Lingnan Theses

Lifelong learning (LL) has been widely regarded as one of the activities that can enhance well-being of the society and benefit older persons in terms of psychological, physical, mental, and cognitive well-being. In foreign countries like the Unites States of America, the United Kingdom, Finland, France, Australia, and also China, LL among older persons had been developed successfully. Hong Kong, in contrast, has no systematic planning for the development of LL even though the aged population is increasing rapidly. This research aims at constructing a LL model for older persons in Hong Kong. The theoretical framework of study focused on …

Older Mothers' Expectations Of Intergenerational Relationships : The Intergenerational Ambivalence Perspective, Sze Wing Yan Jan 2005

Older Mothers' Expectations Of Intergenerational Relationships : The Intergenerational Ambivalence Perspective, Sze Wing Yan

Lingnan Theses

With the effects of social changes, family values have changed and tensions and contradictions are probably more likely to occur among family members. According to the intergenerational ambivalence perspective, intergenerational relationships are inherently structured so as to generate ambivalence. Ambivalence means the contradictions in the relationships between older parents and adult children that cannot be reconciled. Individuals are expected to use various strategies in their attempts to manage ambivalence at least temporarily.

Older women, who often have different life experiences than older men given the influence of traditional Chinese culture, are the focus of this research. The present study aims …

Constructing Educational Criticism Of Online Courses: A Model For Implementation By Practitioners, Kelvin Thompson Jan 2005

Constructing Educational Criticism Of Online Courses: A Model For Implementation By Practitioners, Kelvin Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Online courses are complex, human-driven contexts for formal learning. Little has been said about the environment emerging from the interaction of instructor(s), learners, and other resources in such courses. Theories that focus on instructional settings and methods that are designed to accommodate inquiry into complex phenomena are essential to the systematic study of online courses. Such a line of research is necessary as the basis for a common language with which we can begin to speak holistically about online courses. In this dissertation, I attempt to generate better questions about the nature of online instructional environments. By combining prior works …

Similarly chlorine has long been used as a disinfectant for making drinking water safe, but excessive chlorination is an environmental and health hazard …

Resource Allocation Using Touch And Audition, David Mortimer Jan 2005

Resource Allocation Using Touch And Audition, David Mortimer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When people multi-task with inputs that demand attention, processing, andencoding, sensory interference is possible at almost any level. Multiple Resource Theory (MRT) suggests that such interference may be avoided by drawing from separate pools of resources available when using different sensory channels, memory processes, and even different response modes. Thus, there should be advantages in dividing tasks among different sensory channels to tap independent pools of attentional resources. For example, people are better with two tasks using the eye and ear, than when using two auditory or two visual inputs. The majority of the research on MRT involves visual to …

The Effect Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls On Liver Tumor Promotion: A Role For Kupffer Cells?, Rodica Petruta Bunaciu Jan 2005

The Effect Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls On Liver Tumor Promotion: A Role For Kupffer Cells?, Rodica Petruta Bunaciu

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are ubiquitious lipophilic environmental pollutants. At least some of the PCB congeners and mixtures are hepatic tumor promoters. The mechanisms are not fully understood and might be multifactorial Besides being the most abundant congener in the environment, 2,2,4,4,5,5-hexachlorobiphenyl (PCB-153), has been previously shown to increase hepatocyte proliferation 48h after exposure in rats. The goal of this study was to determine whether hepatic Kupffer cells are important in the promoting activity of PCBs. The hypothesis of this study was that modulation of Kupffer cell activity by PCBs may contribute to PCB-induced liver tumor promotion. The experimental approach consisted …

Applying Cost-Benefit To Past Decisions: Was Environmental Protection Ever A Good Idea?, Lisa Heinzerling, Frank Ackerman, Rachel Massey Jan 2005

Applying Cost-Benefit To Past Decisions: Was Environmental Protection Ever A Good Idea?, Lisa Heinzerling, Frank Ackerman, Rachel Massey

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this Article, however, we do not mount a critique from outside the technique of cost-benefit analysis. Instead, we examine an argument that proponents of cost-benefit analysis have offered as a linchpin of the case for cost-benefit: that this technique is neither anti- nor pro-regulatory, but rather a neutral tool for evaluating public policy. In making this argument, these proponents have often invoked the use of cost-benefit analysis to support previous regulatory decisions (their favorite example involves the phase down of lead in gasoline, which we shall shortly discuss) as a sign that this technique can be used to support …

Dynamic Complementarity: Terri's Law And Separation Of Powers Principles In The End-Of-Life Context, O. Carter Snead

Journal Articles

The bitter dispute over the proper treatment of Theresa Marie Schiavo - a severely brain-damaged woman, unable to communicate and with no living will or advance directive - has garnered enormous attention in the media, both national and international. What began as a heated disagreement between Ms. Schiavo's husband and parents mushroomed into a massive political conflict involving privacy advocates on one side, and right-to-life and disability activists on the other. The battle raged on the editorial pages of the world's newspapers, in the courts, and ultimately, in the legislative and executive branches of the Florida state government. After nearly …

Arresting Vaulting Pole Technology, Russ Versteeg Jan 2005

Arresting Vaulting Pole Technology, Russ Versteeg

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Generally speaking, sports rules perform at least six functions, many of which overlap. Sports rules: 1) define the game; 2) promote safety; 3) prohibit unfair advantage; 4) promote administrative efficiency; 5) foster good sportsmanship; and, 6) promote fairness. Presumably, as sports evolve, rule makers must seriously consider at least two important questions when deciding how to respond to any given technological innovation that affects a sport. They must consider its potential impact on the integrity of the sport (i.e., how it affects both the definition of the game as well as whether it creates an unfair advantage and/or otherwise hinders …
