Growth Rates Of Interface-Feeding Spionid Polychaetes In Simulated Tidal Currents, Brian T. Hentschel, Brenda S. Herrick
Growth Rates Of Interface-Feeding Spionid Polychaetes In Simulated Tidal Currents, Brian T. Hentschel, Brenda S. Herrick
Journal of Marine Research
Most spionid polychaetes switch from surface deposit feeding to suspension feeding as current speed and the flux of suspended food increase. Previous experiments testing the effects of flow on the growth of facultative, interface feeders have been limited to very simplified flow regimes such as constant, unidirectional currents. To measure the growth of interface-feeding spionids in more realistic currents, we programmed two identical counter-rotating annular flumes to simulate two different semidiurnal tidal currents. Each regime included four speeds that varied in hourly steps. At 5 mm above bottom, speeds in the slower flow regime were 0, 2.5, 5, and 7.5 …

A range of options for reducing land degradation is discussed. Factors such as soil type, annual rainfall, enterprise mix and financial structure are also considered.
Efficiency In Thin-Film Liquid System For Hosta Micropropagation, Jeffrey Adelberg
Efficiency In Thin-Film Liquid System For Hosta Micropropagation, Jeffrey Adelberg
Publications
Three varieties of Hosta (‘Striptease’, ‘Minuteman’ and ‘Stiletto’) at four densities (40, 80, 120 and 200 explants per litre) were micropropagated on semi-solid agar and a thin-film liquid system with intermittent wetting of plant tissue. The mechanics of wetting by a small wave front required a larger rectangular vessel (11 × 27=297 cm 2) compared to the common cylindrical baby food jar (18 cm 2). Plants multiplied more rapidly in the agitated thin-film system than on agar. Lower plant densities increased rates of multiplication in liquid, but had little or no effect on multiplication rate on agar. Increasing …

Narrative Art Therapy For Families That Have A Child With A Life-Threatening Illness, Andrea A. Seitz
Narrative Art Therapy For Families That Have A Child With A Life-Threatening Illness, Andrea A. Seitz
Art Therapy | Master's Theses in Print
Researchers have recognized the importance of meaningful collaboration between family medical and family therapy practitioners. A report published this year (2005) by the American Academy of Pediatrics spells out the need for pediatricians to be cognizant of the entire family’s needs when treating a child. Given the demands on pediatricians it seems almost impossible for them to provide psycho-social support needed by families. Therefore, a partnership between an MFT and a physician is a more realistic alternative. This proposal will offer an intervention model for working with families who have a child with a catastrophic illness. The treatment modality. Narrative …
Assessing The Condition Of Juvenile Song Sparrows (Melospiza Melodia) Using Stable Nitrogen And Carbon Isotopes, Bethany L. Kempster
Assessing The Condition Of Juvenile Song Sparrows (Melospiza Melodia) Using Stable Nitrogen And Carbon Isotopes, Bethany L. Kempster
Digitized Theses
Offspring condition may predict a population’s future success. We studied the effects of nutritional stress on Δ N and Δ C in juvenile Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia) handreared under ad libitum or food-stressed conditions, and compared them to conventional measures of condition. The degree of food stress significantly altered development, causing poor condition and increased corticosterone, glucose, and anemia. Despite this, we could not detect nutritional stress as measured by Δ N or Δ C and the birds did not display increased developmental instability. 15N enrichment may require greater levels of nutritional stress than used in this experiment. Δ C …

Crop Depredations By Cranes At Daursky State Biosphere Reserve, Siberia, Stephen H. Bouffard, John E. Cornely, Oleg A. Goroshko
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Crop depredations by staging cranes have been an annual problem at Daursky State Biosphere Reserve in southern Siberia. In September 2001 we met at Daursky when crane populations peaked to investigate the problem and suggest methods to reduce damages. Peak of crane staging coincided with grain harvest. We counted ≈ 30,000 cranes of 5 species, primarily demoiselles (Anthropoides virgo), in the area. Poor grain yields and cooperative farming systems discouraged efforts to reduce damage. Moving crops further from roost areas may be the most reasonable short term control method, but it’s effectiveness is yet untested. Hazing, lure crops …

Patterns Of Food Use Of Wintering Whooping Cranes On The Texas Coast, Craig M. Westwood, Felipe Chavez-Ramirez
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Whooping Crane (Grus americana) fecal samples were collected from Matagorda Island National Wildlife Refuge (MINWR) during winter and fall of 1993-94 (Winter-1; n = 59), and Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) during winter and fall of 1993-94 (n = 102) and 1994-95 (Winter-2; n = 257) to study crane diets and compare patterns of food use in these areas. Food items varied between areas, across months, and between years in both frequency and percent volume. Blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), wolfberry fruit (Lycium carolinianum), horn snail (Cerithidea pliculasa), razor clam (Tagellus plebius), …

Evidence Of A Decline In Fat Storage By Midcontinental Sandhill Cranes In Nebraska During Spring: A Preliminary Assessment, Gary L. Krapua, David A. Brandt, Deborah A. Buhl, Gary W. Lingle
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
When an ice storm killed an estimated 2,000 sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) in the Central Platte River Valley (CPRV) in Nebraska on 24 March 1996, we retrieved the fresh carcasses of 118 adults to test for a decline in the condition of spring-staging cranes from that date in 1978 and 1979. We first conducted a principle component analysis on 3 morphological variables (tarsus, exposed culmen, and wing chord [flattened]) and used the first principal component (PC1) as an index of body size. Then, to account for variation in body mass due to size, we regressed body mass on …

A Dual Catastrophe Of Protectionism, Sungjoon Cho
A Dual Catastrophe Of Protectionism, Sungjoon Cho
Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business
Suppose that a consortium of wealthy and powerful local industries, acting through lawmakers captured by these industries, managed to pass a statute, damaging to the larger public welfare, purely for a protectionist purpose. Suppose further that this statute victimizes exports from a small, poor country such as Vietnam, to a large, rich country such as the United States, because these imported products are cheaper and thus pose a competitive threat to rival domestic industries. Suppose also that courts in the importing country can do little to stop this chain of events. Rational individuals might find these events objectionable, if not …

Food Acceptability In Field Studies With Us Army Men And Women: Relationship With Food Intake And Food Choice After Repeated Exposures, Cees De Graaf, F. Matthew Kramer, Herbert L. Meiselman, Larry L. Lesher, Carol Baker-Fulco, Edward S. Hirsch, John Warber
United States Army: Publications
Laboratory data with single exposures showed that palatability has a positive relationship with food intake. The question addressed in this study is whether this relationship also holds over repeated exposures in non-laboratory contexts in more natural environments. The data were collected in four field studies, lasting 4–11 days with 307 US Army men and 119 Army women, and comprised 5791 main meals and 8831 snacks in total. Acceptability was rated on the nine point hedonic scale, and intake was registered in units of 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, or 1 or more times of the provided portion size. Correlation coefficients between individual …
