Identification Of Genetically Modified Organisms In Foodstuffs, Anamarie Beluch Jan 2005

Identification Of Genetically Modified Organisms In Foodstuffs, Anamarie Beluch

Student Theses 2001-2013

In this lab we identified GMOs, through the method of PCR, in all of our food samples, in our organic samples, and in corn versus soy samples. We accepted are alternative hypothesis that there were GMOs in our food samples. We also accepted our alternative hypothesis that there were GMOs in our organic samples. We then compared GMOs in our corn versus soy samples, and rejected are null hypothesis that there were the same percentage of GMOs in corn and soy. The chi square test was performed for conventional corn and soy, and organic corn and soy. We calculated the …

Effects Of Family Mealtime Practices On Household Inhabitants, Lindsay A. Schwarz, Melanie Burns Jan 2005

Effects Of Family Mealtime Practices On Household Inhabitants, Lindsay A. Schwarz, Melanie Burns

Faculty Research & Creative Activity until 2018 (FCS)

The purpose of this study was to determine how various family mealtime practices influence family dynamics. The objectives were to determine the frequency of meals per week consumed as a family, which meal was typically consumed together, influencing factors on why families do or do not choose to eat together, and the extent to which the participants perceived that family meal time strengthens the family unit. Participants (n=50) in the study completed a self-administered survey that consisted of questions regarding current family mealtime practices, as well as general questions about the family unit. Results indicated that family meals have the …

Cruelty Toward Cats: Changing Perspectives, Randall Lockwood Jan 2005

Cruelty Toward Cats: Changing Perspectives, Randall Lockwood

State of the Animals 2005

Of all the species that have been domesticated, cats have historically been subjected to the widest diversity of treatment by humans. They have been worshipped as gods and reviled as devils, coddled and pampered, but also abandoned and abused. Our treatment of cats has likewise created a range of problems for professionals concerned with their care—from dealing with problems of obesity and overindulgence to tending to the needs of animals who have been neglected, intentionally harmed, or even tortured.

Indoor Cats, Scratching, And The Debate Over Declawing: When Normal Pet Behavior Becomes A Problem, Katherine C. (Kasey) Grier, Nancy Peterson

State of the Animals 2005

When pet animals share our living spaces, their needs and natural behaviors sometimes are at odds with the varying standards for household appearance, sanitation, and polite social life that Americans have established over time. How pet owners have resolved these issues provides insight into their changing ideas about the role of animals in their households and suggests how much, or how little, people may actually know about the biological behaviors and psychological needs of the creatures they care for. This essay examines one particular issue associated with the problem of sharing spaces: declawing pet cats as a common solution to …

The Future Of Teratology Research Is In Vitro, Jarrod Bailey, Andrew Knight, Jonathan Balcombe Jan 2005

The Future Of Teratology Research Is In Vitro, Jarrod Bailey, Andrew Knight, Jonathan Balcombe

Experimentation Collection

Birth defects induced by maternal exposure to exogenous agents during pregnancy are preventable, if the agents themselves can be identified and avoided. Billions of dollars and manhours have been dedicated to animal-based discovery and characterisation methods over decades. We show here, via a comprehensive systematic review and analysis of this data, that these methods constitute questionable science and pose a hazard to humans. Mean positive and negative predictivities barely exceed 50%; discordance among the species used is substantial; reliable extrapolation from animal data to humans is impossible, and virtually all known human teratogens have so far been identified in spite …

Profile: Alumni Stories: Health Fitness Research Medicine, University Relations

Profile (1996-)

The theme of this issue of Profile is medicine, health and wellness, a timely topic as we celebrate the successes of our student athletes in our move to NCAA Division III, commemorate the first half-decade of the astonishingly successful Regional Fitness Center, and continue to work for shared athletic facilities with the Morris Area Public School District.

The Effects Of Resource Availability On Alternative Mating Tactics In Guppies (Poecilia Reticulata), Gita R. Kolluru, Gregory F. Grether Jan 2005

The Effects Of Resource Availability On Alternative Mating Tactics In Guppies (Poecilia Reticulata), Gita R. Kolluru, Gregory F. Grether

Biological Sciences

Food availability can influence the optimal allocation of time and energy among alternative behaviors such as foraging, courting, and competing for mates. If populations differ consistently in food availability, selection may cause geographic divergence in allocation strategies. At the opposite extreme, a norm of reaction may evolve such that food intake influences the allocation strategy of individuals in the same way in all populations. Between these two extremes, food intake reaction norms may diverge genetically among populations. For example, at sites where food is scarce, selection may strengthen the effect of food intake on behavior, whereas at sites with abundant …

Women And Family Health: The Role Of Mothers In Promoting Family And Child Health, Paula Y. Goodwin, Dean A. Garrett, Osman Galal Jan 2005

Women And Family Health: The Role Of Mothers In Promoting Family And Child Health, Paula Y. Goodwin, Dean A. Garrett, Osman Galal

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

In many societies, women have been socialized to provide care and maintenance to the family unit by procuring and preparing food, giving care to dependent family members, and by socializing children to become productive adults. Thus, women's roles within families have positioned them to become health managers or promoters of overall family health, particularly for children in developing countries whose lives are directly linked to that of their mothers. The authors propose that efforts to improve the health of children should focus on the family unit as a whole, with a particular focus on the mother or mother figures of …

Big Sagebrush Response To One-Way And Two-Way Chaining In Southeastern Utah, John A. Fairchild, James N. Davis, Jack D. Brotherson, Usda Forest Service Jan 2005

Big Sagebrush Response To One-Way And Two-Way Chaining In Southeastern Utah, John A. Fairchild, James N. Davis, Jack D. Brotherson, Usda Forest Service

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

A decadent, mixed stand of Wyoming big sagebrush, Artemisia tridentata wyomingensis, and mountain big sagebrush, Artemisia tridentata vaseyana, located north of Cisco, Utah, was subjected to one-way and two-way chaining treatments in November 1987. The effect of the treatments on plant community characteristics and shrub vigor was documented over a 3-year period. Stand density was reduced 60 percent on sites chained two ways and 43 percent on sites chained over once. Shrubs on one-way chained sites produced more leader growth in 1989 and 1990 than those on untreated sites or sites chained two ways. Browse production on one-way chained sites …
