Parental Perceptions Of Overweight And Obese Children Among Low-Income Women, Infants, And Children Participants, Thomas Hernandez Jan 2005

Parental Perceptions Of Overweight And Obese Children Among Low-Income Women, Infants, And Children Participants, Thomas Hernandez

Theses Digitization Project

Investigates parental perceptions of overweight or obese children who receive services from the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program in San Bernardino County, California. Study design was based on a qualitative ethnographic interview technique in which a moderator guided between 6-12 individuals through a discussion of a particular topic. Results indicate that the parents interviewed were highly concerned with the health of their children and family, but do not perceive their child to be at an immediate health risk. In addition, most felt their children's weight to be "normal" in spite of any physical findings that suggested otherwise.

Information Systems And Health Care Viii-Using Paper-Based Scenarios To Examine Perceptions Of Interactive Health Communication Systems, Nancy K. Lankton, Robert D. St. Louis Jan 2005

Information Systems And Health Care Viii-Using Paper-Based Scenarios To Examine Perceptions Of Interactive Health Communication Systems, Nancy K. Lankton, Robert D. St. Louis

Accounting Faculty Research

While information and communication technologies can increase the health care provided to underserved populations, research concerning these technologies often involves only those patients who possess access to technology or who are otherwise willing and able to use it. This issue is important for both researchers and practitioners because non-users' beliefs may not only be different from users' beliefs, they may become more important to understand as access to technology increases. To address this problem: 1. We develop a model of the antecedents to perceived usefulness of an interactive health communication (IHC) system. While our research model combines health-related beliefs with …

Zu Zon Bar & Grill, Zu Zon Bar & Grill Jan 2005

Zu Zon Bar & Grill, Zu Zon Bar & Grill

Chef Steve Menu Collection

Closed circa 2002. “See you at the Zu,” is not an invitation to go and view the polar bears and giraffes, though sometimes things can get a bit wild. Zu Zon’s, with its jungle motif, and often a standing-room only crowd at the bar, is one of the areas most popular watering holes. Owners Sue and Mark Warren, who also own Warren’s in Tonawanda, have put together a menu of traditional favorites, perked up with some exciting touches. They call it “casual food with attitude.” 5110 Main St, Buffalo, NY 14221.

Impact Of Nutrition Knowledge On Food Evaluations, Stephen Crites, Shelley Aikman Jan 2005

Impact Of Nutrition Knowledge On Food Evaluations, Stephen Crites, Shelley Aikman

Selected Works Temporary Series

Objective: This study explored whether nutrition knowledge interacted with evaluations of a food’s healthiness to influence food attitudes (ie, global evaluations). Since attitudes guide behavior, understanding factors that impact food attitudes is one way to understand food selection and why factors such as nutrition knowledge have only a modest impact on food selection. We hypothesized that the relation between health evaluations and food attitudes would be stronger for people high in nutrition knowledge. We also explored the macronutrient composition of foods, and how it related to attitudes and health evaluations. Design: Survey employing multilevel analyses to examine within- and between-subject …

Worldview, Science And The Understanding Of Nature, William W. Cobern Jan 2005

Worldview, Science And The Understanding Of Nature, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

I am drawn to Nature because I see in Nature the handwork of God and I wonder what are our responsibilities as stewards of Nature? Being of a scientific bent, I wonder how Nature works? I wonder how Nature came to be? In other words, my thoughts– my everyday thoughts– about Nature are rooted in deep, fundamental beliefs that I hold about my life and the world in which I live, that is, my worldview. Nature of course is the traditional domain in which the “natural” sciences operate, but how we understand science and Nature is rooted in our worldview. …

Mimosa 2005, Jacksonville State University Jan 2005

Mimosa 2005, Jacksonville State University

JSU Yearbooks

The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.

Edaphic Specialization In Tropical Trees: Physiological Correlates And Responses To Reciprocal Transplantation, Jennifer L. Baltzer, Sean C. Thomas, R. Nilus, D.F.R.P. Burslem Jan 2005

Edaphic Specialization In Tropical Trees: Physiological Correlates And Responses To Reciprocal Transplantation, Jennifer L. Baltzer, Sean C. Thomas, R. Nilus, D.F.R.P. Burslem

Biology Faculty Publications

Recent research has documented the importance of edaphic factors in determining the habitat associations of tree species in many tropical rain forests, but the underlying mechanisms for edaphic associations are unclear. At Sepilok Forest Reserve, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, two main soil types derived from sandstone (ridges) and alluvium (valleys) differ in nutrient and water availability and are characterized by forests differing markedly in species composition, structure, and understory light availability. We use both survey and reciprocal transplants to examine physiological adaptations to differences in light, nutrient, and water availability between these soil types, and test for the importance of resource-use …

Selenotrisulfide Derivative Of Alpha-Lipoic Acid: Evaluation In A Cell Culture Model For Potential Use As A Topical Antioxidant, Melenie Lee Alonis Jan 2005

Selenotrisulfide Derivative Of Alpha-Lipoic Acid: Evaluation In A Cell Culture Model For Potential Use As A Topical Antioxidant, Melenie Lee Alonis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium is a required micronutrient in mammalian cells. It is incorporated in the form of selenocysteine into selenoenzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase, and is absolutely required for activity. Thioredoxin reductase is necessary for reduction of oxidized thioredoxin and therefore plays a major role in maintaining the redox status of the cell. Glutathione peroxidase is responsible for reducing peroxides into their corresponding alcohols and water. Together, these selenoenzymes constitute a significant part of the cell's arsenal to defend itself against oxidative stress. Exogenous sources of oxidative stress, such as UV radiation, are capable of generating reactive oxygen species …

Effects Of Food Attributes And Feeding Environment On Acceptance, Consumption And Body Weight: Lessons Learned In A Twenty-Year Program Of Military Ration Research, Edward S. Hirsch, F. Matthew Kramer, Herbert L. Meiselman Jan 2005

Effects Of Food Attributes And Feeding Environment On Acceptance, Consumption And Body Weight: Lessons Learned In A Twenty-Year Program Of Military Ration Research, Edward S. Hirsch, F. Matthew Kramer, Herbert L. Meiselman

United States Army: Publications

Twenty years of testing in the field has consistently revealed that food intake is inadequate when packaged military rations are fed as the sole source of food. Food intake is much lower and there is a loss of body weight. Conversely when these rations are fed to students or military personnel for periods ranging from 3 to 42 days in a cafeteria-like setting, food intake is comparable to levels of a control group provided with freshly prepared food. Under these conditions, body weight is maintained. In this review, the consumption pattern is considered in terms of characteristics of the food …
