Iowa Producers' Perceived Benefits And Obstacles In Marketing To Local Restaurants And Institutional Foodservice Operations, Mary B. Gregoire, Susan W. Arendt, Catherine H. Strohbehn
Iowa Producers' Perceived Benefits And Obstacles In Marketing To Local Restaurants And Institutional Foodservice Operations, Mary B. Gregoire, Susan W. Arendt, Catherine H. Strohbehn
Journal of Extension
Local Iowa producers were surveyed to determine perceived benefits and obstacles in marketing to local restaurants and institutional foodservice operations; 195 (35%) responded. Results indicated that only 25% of producers currently were selling to foodservice operations. Benefits cited were: support for local farmers; fresher food; food traveling shorter distances; better quality food; and knowledge of food source. Year-round availability, lack of dependable market, and inability to change pricing were greatest obstacles. Extension educators can help facilitate linking local growers with foodservice operations to increase direct sales of local products to these operations.
Assuring Youth Raising Livestock For Food Produce A Quality Product, Jamie L. Fassett, Rosemarie A. Nold, S Kay Rockwell
Assuring Youth Raising Livestock For Food Produce A Quality Product, Jamie L. Fassett, Rosemarie A. Nold, S Kay Rockwell
Journal of Extension
The Nebraska 4-H Assuring Quality program was developed to help youth producers understand responsibilities of raising livestock for food, increase technical knowledge of quality assurance practices, and implement those practices. Participants' knowledge, attitudes, and practices were determined by surveying parents using a post-then-pre method. Mean retrospective pre-scores showed that youths significantly increased their knowledge, positively changed their attitudes, and implemented better quality assurance management practices in each of the five subject areas taught: (a) quality assurance concepts, (b) feeding and watering, (c) animal identification, (d) housing and facilities and (e) prevention of problems.

What Cooperative Extension Professionals Need To Know About Institutional Review Boards: Risks And Benefits, Dan Weigel, Sally Martin, Randy Brown
Journal of Extension
More and more, Extension professionals are being asked to first run their needs assessment, program evaluation, and applied research projects through their university's Institutional Review Boards. For many, this can be a confusing task. This article is the third in a series providing tips for preparing IRB proposals and discusses the potential risks and benefits involved in research projects.

Oral History Project (all interviews)
Gertrude Applebaum devoted forty-seven years of her illustrious career to the Corpus Christi School District, forty of which were spent as Food Service Director, and then seven as Assistant Superintendent. Soon after becoming a member of the child nutrition profession Ms. Applebaum attended the meeting in Chicago where Food Service Directors and the National School Cafeteria Association voted to merge and form the American School Food Service Association. She served as President of this organization, now known as the School Nutrition Association, in 1981-82.

Sod Suppression Techniques For Legume Interseeding, Alexander J. Smart, Vance N. Owens, Dick Pruitt
Sod Suppression Techniques For Legume Interseeding, Alexander J. Smart, Vance N. Owens, Dick Pruitt
South Dakota Beef Report, 2005
Sod suppression is necessary for successful establishment of legumes interseeded into existing pasture; however such techniques vary in their effectiveness, cost, and management. Sod suppression experiments for legume interseeding into cool-season pasture were conducted at South Dakota State University’s Cow-Calf Unit located near Brookings, SD in 2003 to 2005. We evaluated (i) spring burn, (ii) field cultivator or disk, (iii) herbicide, (iv) heavy fall and spring graze, and (v) a control with no sod suppression. Legume species were alfalfa, birdsfoot trefoil, and kura clover. Sod suppression techniques enhanced the success of legume interseeding. In this study, the grazing equaled or …

Characterizing A First Occurrence Of Bison Deposits In Southeastern Nevada, William Gray Johnson, Saxon E. Sharpe, Thomas F. Bullard, Karen Lupo
Characterizing A First Occurrence Of Bison Deposits In Southeastern Nevada, William Gray Johnson, Saxon E. Sharpe, Thomas F. Bullard, Karen Lupo
Western North American Naturalist
Late Holocene bison bones eroding from the badlands topography of Cathedral Gorge State Park in southeastern Nevada have been identified as the remains of Bison and date between approximately 400 and 850 years old. The bones were originally thought to be turn-of-the-century cattle and then early bison, so park personnel had need to solve this interpretive problem. A multidisciplinary team sought information on archaeology, geomorphology, paleontology, and paleoenvironment to document the 1st established occurrence of bison in this part of Nevada and to develop a hypothesis explaining their demise.
Response Of Sagebrush Steppe Species To Elevated Co2 And Soil Temperature, Melissa S. Lucash, Blake Farnsworth, William E. Winner
Response Of Sagebrush Steppe Species To Elevated Co2 And Soil Temperature, Melissa S. Lucash, Blake Farnsworth, William E. Winner
Western North American Naturalist
Elevated atmospheric CO2 may cause long-term changes in the productivity and species composition of the sagebrush steppe. Few studies, however, have evaluated the effects of increased CO2 on growth and physiology of species important to this ecosystem. Since the response of plants to elevated CO2 may be limited by environmental factors, soil temperature was also examined to determine if low soil temperatures limit CO2 response. To determine how CO2 and soil temperature affect the growth of species native to the sagebrush steppe, bottlebrush squirreltail [Elymus elymoides (Raf.) Swezey], Thurber needlegrass (Stipa thurberiana Piper), …

Intravenous Ghrelin Infusion Affects Plasma Growth Hormone Concentrations, Dry Matter Disappearance, And Length Of Time Spent Feeding, Aimee E. Wertz-Lutz, Robbi H. Pritchard, Joseph A. Daniel, Jeff A. Clapper
South Dakota Beef Report, 2005
Six steers (915 ± 37.8 kg) were used in a crossover design to determine the effects of intravenous infusion of bovine ghrelin (BGR) on plasma growth hormone (GH) concentrations, length of time spent feeding, and dry matter disappearance per unit of metabolic weight. Steers were fed individually once daily (0800 h) and allowed to consume ad libitum until 2000 h when feed was removed. Daily feed allotment was sufficient to result in ≥ 10% feed refusal. Serial blood samples were collected from steers fitted with an indwelling jugular catheter at 15-min intervals from 0600 h through 1800 h. Harvested plasma …
Effect Of Feeding Schedule On Tympanic Temperature Of Steer Calves During Winter, Simone M. Holt, Robbi H. Pritchard
Effect Of Feeding Schedule On Tympanic Temperature Of Steer Calves During Winter, Simone M. Holt, Robbi H. Pritchard
South Dakota Beef Report, 2005
Angus steer calves (n=135) were used in a 55d feedlot growing study to investigate the effects of feeding schedule on tympanic temperature response when limit feeding. Steers were fed a high moisture ear corn diet (58 Mcal/cwt NEg) at 0900h (AM), 1500h (PM) or 50% at 0900h and 50% at 1500h (SPLIT) to allow for 2.50lb ADG. Climatic data were collected at 30 min intervals throughout the study via an on site automated weather station. Tympanic temperatures (TT) were collected every 30 min (5 steers/trt) for 5d (d44 to d48). Mean ambient temperature during the 5d TT collection period was …
