Eeotogists increasingly recognize the need to understand how landscapes ami food webs interact. Reservoir ecosystems are heavily subsidized by nutrients and detritus from surrounding watersheds, and ofren contain abundant populations of gizzard shad, an omnivorous ftsh that consumes plankton and detritus. Gizzard shad link terrestrial landscapes ami pelagic reservoir food webs by consuming detritus, translocating nutrients from sedimctn detritus to the water column, and consuming zooplaukton. The abundance of gizzard shad increases with watershed agricuhuralization, most likely through n variety oj mechanisms npeniting on ttuvat and adult life stages. Gizzard shad have myriad effects on reservoirs, including impacts on nutrients, …

The impact of filamentous fungi on human welfare has never been greater. Fungi are acknowledged as the most economically devastating plant pathogens (1) and are attaining increasing notoriety for their ability to cause life-threatening infections in humans (57, 71), and fungal products sustain a billion dollar manufacturing industry (70). The tools available to study filamentous fungi are more sophisticated than ever and include the complete annotated genome sequences of multiple filamentous fungi (12), resources being made available through various functional genomics projects, and advanced bioimaging methods, including high-resolution live-cell imaging (20, 32) and electron tomography (19, 50). The increasing impact …

Multiple Metabolic Hits Converge On Cd36 As Novel Mediator Of Tubular Epithelial Apoptosis In Diabetic Nephropathy., Katalin Susztak, Emilio Ciccone, Peter Mccue, Kumar Sharma, Erwin P Böttinger
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy (DNP) is a common complication of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus and the most common cause of kidney failure. While DNP manifests with albuminuria and diabetic glomerulopathy, its progression correlates best with tubular epithelial degeneration (TED) and interstitial fibrosis. However, mechanisms leading to TED in DNP remain poorly understood.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We found that expression of scavenger receptor CD36 coincided with proximal tubular epithelial cell (PTEC) apoptosis and TED specifically in human DNP. High glucose stimulated cell surface expression of CD36 in PTECs. CD36 expression was necessary and sufficient to mediate PTEC apoptosis induced …
County-Level Extension Programming: Continuity And Change In The Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Laura Robinson, Mark Dubois, Conner Bailey
County-Level Extension Programming: Continuity And Change In The Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Laura Robinson, Mark Dubois, Conner Bailey
Journal of Extension
Production agriculture is no longer a dominant feature of Alabama's rural life. Forestry and natural resource issues have emerged as significant concerns expressed by County Advisory Boards designed to help shape county-level Extension programming in Alabama. Our findings indicate that county-level Extension programming continues to put greater emphasis on traditional agricultural programs than on forestry and natural resources even though County Advisory Boards considered the latter issues to have greater priority. We examine the potential causes for the continued dominance of traditional programs in Alabama and conclude that initiatives to change program priorities are unlikely to begin at the county …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Interactions of the parasitoid Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) and the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), on greenbug-resistant ‘Cargill 607E’ (antibiosis), ‘Cargill 797’ (primarily tolerance), and -susceptible ‘Golden Harvest 510B’ sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, were tested using three levels of biotype I greenbug infestation. The parasitoid infestation rate was 0.5 female and 1.0 male L. testaceipes per plant. For all three greenbug infestation levels, the parasitoid brought the greenbug under control (i.e., prevented the greenbugs from killing the plants) on both resistant hybrids, but it did not prevent heavy leaf damage at the higher greenbug infestation rates. At the low greenbug infestation …

Extension Professionals' Ever-Changing Roles When Working With At-Risk Clientele, Alayne Torretta
Extension Professionals' Ever-Changing Roles When Working With At-Risk Clientele, Alayne Torretta
Journal of Extension
Extension's role is to educate participants of its programs and measure impact upon clientele. While Extension professionals are educators, the at-risk clientele have many issues that supersede education. Therefore, a framework from which the Extension professional can operate in order to clarify roles and visualize outcomes for clientele is necessary. Extension professionals can use the Cooperative Extension At-Risk Service Model as this framework. This will assist them in moving clients to adopt improved practices while maintaining boundaries in the professional relationship.

Nitrate Quiktest For Rapid Detection Of High Nitrate Levels In Forages, S Dennis Cash, Julie Hager, Linda Keddington, Ron Carlstrom
Journal of Extension
The Nitrate "QuikTest" Program was implemented in 2000 to assist Montana livestock producers in dealing with toxic levels of nitrate in drought-stressed forages. A certification program similar to that for pesticide applicator licensing was developed for safe use and interpretation of the test. All training materials and examinations are now posted on an interactive Extension Web site. Since 2000, 110 users in 50 counties (89% of Montana counties) have been certified to conduct the Nitrate QuikTest, and 6,615 samples were evaluated. This has been a high-impact, timely program to educate and serve our livestock producers.

In health care today, scientific and technological frontiers are expanding at unprecedented rates, even as economic and financial pressures shrink profit margins, intensify competition, and constrain the funds available for investment. Therefore, the world today has more economic, and social opportunities for people than 10 or 100 years since globalization has created a new ground somewhat characterized by rapid economic transformation, deregulation of national markets by new trade regimes, amazing transport, electronic communication possibilities and high turnover of foreign investment and capital flow as well as skilled labor. These trends can easily mask great inequalities in developing countries such as …

Dietary Macronutrient Intake Of Saudi Males And Its Relationship To Classical Coronary Risk Factors, Eman M. Alissa, Suhad M. Bahijri, Gordon A. Ferns
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the dietary intake of energy; macronutrients; and fiber differ between age groups, racial groups and socio-economic classes among males from the Western province of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). METHODS: Data were collected from 303 male subjects, aged 15-80 years. They were selected randomly from King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, KSA from October 2001 to November 2003 and grouped according to their age into 3 groups. The subjects were asked to complete a questionnaire concerning their demographic characteristics, health history, lifestyle, and dietary habits. RESULTS: Energy and carbohydrates intake fell with age (p<0.05). Total dietary carbohydrates and fat intake were similar for all groups when expressed as a percentage of energy intake. The percentage energy as protein increased with age (p<0.05). Mean cholesterol intake was high for all groups, but fell with age group (p<0.0001). Saturated fat and monounsaturated fat intake, expressed as percentage energy intake were both high, whereas polyunsaturated fat intake was low. The youngest group had the highest percentage energy provided by saturated fatty acid (p<0.001), and the lowest percentage energy as polyunsaturated fatty acid (p<0.05) compared to the other groups. The intake of fibre rose with age was significantly higher in the older group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Diet consumed by urban dwellers in KSA appears to have resulted in an imbalance of macronutrient intake among all sectors of the population. This problem can only be averted by raising public awareness and the development of appropriate population-specific nutritional guidelines.

Leuconostoc Bacteremia In A Child With Short-Gut Syndrome, Abdulnasser Helali, Diane Mcalear, Abimbola Osoba
Saudi Medical Journal
In the last decade Leuconostoc species have been reported with increasing frequency as human pathogens, causing bacteremia, meningitis and peritonitis. We report here a child with short-bowel syndrome who developed bacteremia following multiple surgeries for necrotizing enterocolitis. Leuconostoc species was isolated from the blood cultures. The child was successfully treated with ampicillin and gentamycin. He however remained total parenteral nutrition dependent due to his multiple abnormalities. We call the attention of microbiologists and pediatricians to this emerging pathogen, which is intrinsically resistant to vancomycin and can be misidentified in the microbiology laboratory as Viridans streptococci or Enterococci. Increased awareness by …

The rising tide of obesity erodes the health of youths and many times results in adult obesity. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effectiveness of an eight-session health promotion/transtheoretical model Internet/video-delivered intervention to increase physical activity and reduce dietary fat among low-income, culturally diverse, seventh-grade students. Those who completed more than half the sessions increased exercise, t(103) = −1.99, p = .05, and decreased the percentage of dietary fat, t(87) = 2.73, p = .008. Responses to the intervention by stage of change, race, and income are examined.

Extension Staff Response To Increased Programming For At-Risk Audiences, Diane Klemme, Cheryl O. Hausafus, Karen Shirer
Journal of Extension
The study described here examined individual and organizational assumptions that contribute to or inhibit Extension staff's work with at-risk audiences. Three focus group interview sessions were conducted with Extension staff. Analysis of emerging themes identified a number of individual and organizational assumptions that inhibit the organization's ability to change. For example, the study showed that staff lacked clarity about the meaning of the term "at-risk" and staff questioned if the organization valued at-risk programs efforts. The study demonstrated that to create meaningful and sustained change in an organization, individual and organizational assumptions need to be exposed and alternative scenarios developed.
