L’Écriture De La Femme Musulmane Dans Loin Demédine D’Assia Djebar, Yvonne-Marie Mokam

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Assia Djebar is one of the most important figures in contemporary African literature. Her views are structured around a critique of the misrepresentation of Muslim women. It is precisely this challenge that is undertaken in Loin de Médine (1991), in which Djebar challenges various stereotypes in order to offer a new image of Asian women.

Le Français D’Origine Maghrébine Face Au Prisme Médiatique, Hassiba Lassoued

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Whether we admit it or not, the mass media manipulates the masses. This fact proves to be especially dangerous in the context of French people of Maghrebian origin. The media presents them as either incapable of being “assimilated” or as models of integration. At any rate, there seems to be no middle ground between these two extremes.

The Need For Tobacco Education: Studies Of Collegiate Dental Hygiene Patients And Faculty, Joan M. Davis Rdh, Ms, Margaret S Stockdale, Martha Cropper Dec 2005

The Need For Tobacco Education: Studies Of Collegiate Dental Hygiene Patients And Faculty, Joan M. Davis Rdh, Ms, Margaret S Stockdale, Martha Cropper

Journal Articles

The need for inclusion of comprehensive tobacco control education/training for health care providers continues to be stressed in publications addressing cessation services. The dental appointment presents an excellent opportunity to provide tobacco interventions to basically healthy people on regular intervals. The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to assess the need (stage of change and concomitant need for tobacco cessation intervention) of dental hygiene patients at a Midwest dental hygiene clinic, and 2) to assess and compare the level of tobacco intervention education currently being offered by dental hygiene educators in a Midwestern state. Patients (n=426) of a collegiate …

A Comparative Assessment Of U.S. Direct Investment In China And India, Kalpana Arjunan Dec 2005

A Comparative Assessment Of U.S. Direct Investment In China And India, Kalpana Arjunan

LLM Theses and Essays

Foreign direct investment (FDI) has made a dynamic surge into the world economy in the last fifteen years by growing strongly at rates well above those of global foreign trade. China and India attract a significant portion of the global FDI, however, the magnitude of China’s FDI flows is much larger than that of India’s. The special reason for China’s super-magnetic attraction of FDI is intriguing. This dissertation is an attempt to answer the question by making a comparative assessment of the legal framework governing FDI in China and India, with special reference to U.S direct investment, thereby identifying lessons …

Wireless Protected Access, Abhishek Neelakanata Dec 2005

Wireless Protected Access, Abhishek Neelakanata

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

The researcher identified security issues in the wireless network, and discussed methods and the importance of a securing wireless network. Wireless network encryption in use today were examined for their vulnerabilities and the researcher determined that most of the wireless security features in use today do not provide adequate security measure. The researcher recommended that home or Small Office/ Home Office (SOHO) environment users to make the best of what is available for securing wireless networks i.e. upgrade to WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2), or use WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) with truly random value with minimum 20 characters of PSK …

Glycosylphosphatidylinositol-Anchored Proteins Are Required For Cell Wall Synthesis And Morphogenesis In Arabidopsis, C. Stewart Gillmor, Wolfgang Lukowitz, Ginger Brininstool, John C. Sedbrook, Thorsten Hamann, Patricia Poindexter, Chris Somerville

Faculty Publications

Mutations at five loci named PEANUT1-5 (PNT) were identified in a genetic screen for radially swollen embryo mutants, pnt1 cell walls showed decreased crystalline cellulose, increased pectins, and irregular and ectopic deposition of pectins, xyloglucans, and callose. Furthermore, pnt1 pollen is less viable than the wild type, and pnt1 embryos were delayed in morphogenesis and showed defects in shoot and root meristems. The PNT1 gene encodes the Arabidopsis thaliana homolog of mammalian PIG-M, an endoplasmic reticulum-localized mannosyltransferase that is required for synthesis of the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor. All five pnt mutants showed strongly reduced accumulation of GPI-anchored proteins, suggesting that …

Towards Scalable Linear-Optical Quantum Computers, J. P. Dowling, J. D. Franson, H. Lee, G. J. Milburn Dec 2005

Towards Scalable Linear-Optical Quantum Computers, J. P. Dowling, J. D. Franson, H. Lee, G. J. Milburn

Faculty Publications

Scalable quantum computation with linear optics was considered to be impossible due to the lack of efficient two-qubit logic gates, despite the ease of implementation of one-qubit gates. Two-qubit gates necessarily need a non-linear interaction between the two photons, and the efficiency of this non-linear interaction is typically very small in bulk materials. However, it has recently been shown that this barrier can be circumvented with effective non-linearities produced by projective measurements, and with this work linear-optical quantum computing becomes a new avenue towards scalable quantum computation. We review several issues concerning the principles and requirements of this scheme. © …

Cryopreservation Of Human Hematopoietic Stem And Progenitor Cells Loaded With Trehalose: Transient Permeabilization Via The Adenosine Triphosphate-Dependent P2z Receptor Channel, Sandhya S. Buchanan, Michael A. Menze, Steven C. Hand, David W. Pyatt, John F. Carpenter Dec 2005

Cryopreservation Of Human Hematopoietic Stem And Progenitor Cells Loaded With Trehalose: Transient Permeabilization Via The Adenosine Triphosphate-Dependent P2z Receptor Channel, Sandhya S. Buchanan, Michael A. Menze, Steven C. Hand, David W. Pyatt, John F. Carpenter

Faculty Publications

Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HPCs) are a heterogenic population of cells used to treat a number of human diseases. Multilineage differentiation is a required function in successful hematopoietic reconstitution after transplantation of cryopreserved grafts. Conventional use of the cryoprotectant dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has resulted in some reports of infusion related toxicity attributed to DMSO and/or damage to cells during freeze-thawing procedures. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of trehalose, a nontoxic disaccharide of glucose, as an alternative cryoprotectant. Trehalose was introduced into HPCs using the P2Z receptor, known to form nonselective pores in the presence …

The Acs Virgo Cluster Survey. X. Half-Light Radii Of Globular Clusters In Early-Type Galaxies: Environmental Dependencies And A Standard Ruler For Distance Estimation, Andrés Jordán, Patrick Côté, John P. Blakeslee, David Merritt, Et Al. Dec 2005

The Acs Virgo Cluster Survey. X. Half-Light Radii Of Globular Clusters In Early-Type Galaxies: Environmental Dependencies And A Standard Ruler For Distance Estimation, Andrés Jordán, Patrick Côté, John P. Blakeslee, David Merritt, Et Al.

Articles

We have measured half-light radii, rh, for thousands of globular clusters (GCs) belonging to the one hundred early-type galaxies observed in the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey and the elliptical galaxy NGC 4697. An analysis of the dependencies of the measured half-light radii on both the properties of the GCs themselves and their host galaxies reveals that, in analogy with GCs in the Galaxy but in a milder fashion, the average half-light radius increases with increasing galactocentric distance or, alternatively, with decreasing galaxy surface brightness. For the first time, we find that the average half-light radius decreases with the host galaxy …

Loss Of Nitrate-Nitrogen By Runoff And Leaching For Agricultural Watersheds, M. A. Elrashidi, M. D. Mays, A. Fares, C. A. Seybold, J. L. Harder, S. D. Peaslee, Pam Vanneste Dec 2005

Loss Of Nitrate-Nitrogen By Runoff And Leaching For Agricultural Watersheds, M. A. Elrashidi, M. D. Mays, A. Fares, C. A. Seybold, J. L. Harder, S. D. Peaslee, Pam Vanneste

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The loss of nutrients in runoff and leaching water from agricultural land is a major cause of poor water quality in the United States. Scientists (NRCS) developed a technique to estimate the impact of agricultural watersheds on natural water resources. The objectives were to apply the technique on Wagon Train (WT) watershed in Nebraska to predict: (i) loss of water by surface runoff and subsurface leaching, (ii) loss of nitrate-N from soils by runoff and leaching, and (iii) nitrate-N loading for WT reservoir. The annual loss of water was estimated at 4.32 million m3 for runoff and 0.98 million …

Mercury Oxidation By Chlorine-Containing Species And Scrubbing In A Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization System, Yongxin Zhao Dec 2005

Mercury Oxidation By Chlorine-Containing Species And Scrubbing In A Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization System, Yongxin Zhao

Theses and Dissertations

This research is particularly related to mercury control technologies. The state of the art in mercury emission control is generally classified into two categories: Mercury Transformation and Mercury Capture. In this research, two chapters (3 & 4) are specifically related to mercury transformation and another two (5 & 6) are related to mercury capture.

Chapter 3 investigates the capabilities of HCI and CU on Hg° oxidation. The resulting data indicated that both were effective in the combustor. However, HCI was less effective in a quartz reactor. Subsequently, the inhibitory effects of NO and S02 were identified in the quartz reactor. …
