Perception And Reality: An Examination Of American Print Advertising, Angela Rose Ryczkowski Dec 2005

Perception And Reality: An Examination Of American Print Advertising, Angela Rose Ryczkowski

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

I contend current American print advertising relies on the objectification of the body, both male and female, in conjunction with the use of utopian ideals to sell products. The nature of the print ad and mass media is such that they gratuitously inform our cultures ideas on gender and normalcy. By depicting unrealistic images of normalcy and unattainable representations of beauty, advertising not only creates consumer anxiety to purchase products beyond economic means, but also to manipulate our bodies unnaturally, and it creates tension in relations between genders. As a Graphic Designer, I strive to not only reverse this process …

Valuing Earth Intrinsically And Instrumentally: A Theological Framework For Environmental Ethics, Jame Schaefer Dec 2005

Valuing Earth Intrinsically And Instrumentally: A Theological Framework For Environmental Ethics, Jame Schaefer

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Philosophers have struggled with value theory as one of the most recalcitrant problems for environmental ethics. Theologians can benefit from their efforts when retrieving and reworking notions about the goodness of creation in patristic and medieval texts, particularly those by Augustine, John Chrysostom, and Thomas Aquinas. This process yields a religiously motivated rationale for intrinsic-instrumental valuing of the physical world's constituents for themselves, their relationships to one another, and their common good that can be relevant, meaningful, and helpful for responding to ecological degradation.

Hanging The Moonbow : Tom Wallace And The Cumberland Falls Fight, 1926-1931., Noah Garland Huffman 1981-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an examination of Louisville Times editor Tom Wallace's fight to prevent the construction of a hydroelectric dam at Cumberland Falls, Kentucky between 1926 and 1931. By mining Wallace's recently cataloged personal papers, this study provides a narrative of Wallace's lead role in the campaign that resulted in the preservation of Cumberland Falls and the establishment of a state park on the site in 1931. More importantly, however, as a case study of conservation activism during the understudied period from late 1920s and early 1930s, this thesis illustrates how Wallace developed certain arguments and strategies that were especially …

Hate Crimes Against The Homeless: Warning-Out New England Style, Sandra Wachholz Dec 2005

Hate Crimes Against The Homeless: Warning-Out New England Style, Sandra Wachholz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article reports on the hate crime victimization experienced by thirty individuals over the course of their homelessness in a New England city. Indepth interviews were conducted with the participants in order to provide a detailed, contextual account of the nature and forms of their hate crime victimization in public and semi-public spaces. Central to the article is the argument that hate crimes against homeless people function as informal social control mechanisms that impose spatial constraints, not unlike the character and objectives of the warning-out laws that were used to exclude homeless people from the public and private space of …

Diversity And Structure Of Intergenerational Relationships: Elderly Parent–Adult Child Relations In Korea, Keong-Suk Park, Voonchin Phua, James Mcnally, Rongjun Sun

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Korean society has undergone a rapid demographic transition that has challenged traditional patterns of family exchanges. The structure and directions of support flows have become more complex as multiple generations coexist. This article examines the complexity of contemporary Korean intergenerational relationships. The study analyzed two different samples to address anticipated differences in perceptions of and attitudes toward relationships between adult children and elderly parents. The researchers used maximum likelihood latent structure analysis to discover the latent patterns of the association among three main subdimensions of intergenerational relationships: geographic proximity, exchange of support, and cultural norms of family support. …

School Psychologists' Perceived Concerns Regarding Crisis Intervention With Diverse Populations, Ana E. Kemple

Theses and Dissertations

With the ever-increasing diversity among students in the United States, American schools are seeing more of a mismatch between school personnel and students. With the increased attention given to school-related crises, the role of school psychologists has expanded to include crisis intervention. The current study will present information on the need for multicultural competencies in crisis intervention and assess the current concerns of nationally certified school psychologists in this area of service provision. Responses from a random sample of school psychologists (n= …

Court Review: Volume 41, Issue 3-4 - President’S Column, Gayle A. Nachtigal

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

Over their lifetime, most citizens will never see the inside of a jail or be a participant in a criminal trial. They may come to the courthouse for traffic violations and for domestic relations cases, to pay property taxes, deal with landlord-tenant matters, or obtain documents for other events in their lives. As a result, their understanding and appreciation for the judicial system must be gathered from other sources. We must provide accurate information. Citizens receive information about the judicial system from the media, particularly television. Television cases are resolved in approximately 22 minutes; on at least one show, that …

The federal bureaucracy was expanded in order to prevent future acts of terrorism on the U.S. homeland and execute policies related to the War on Terror. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 had an immediate and overwhelming emotional effect upon the American public and prompted countless memorials and services across the United States and around the world. Moments Of Shared Prayer: Ncyc 2005, Marilee S. Mahler

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

The National Catholic Youth Conference 2005 was held in Atlanta from October 27th to October 30th. A Programming Team, of which I was the director designed prayer for five major prayer sessions, which involved many youth leaders and 18,000 youth participants. Over the course of 5 months, I met with the Programming Team, a Technical Crew and the Sponsoring Organization, as well as several committees who had to approve the scripts. Prior to the conference, the Programming Team trained young animators into various leadership roles: singers, cantors, readers and movers. At the conference, it was my responsibility to see that …

Amending The Natural Born Citizen Requirement: Globalization As The Impetus And The Obstacle, Sarah P. Herlihy

Chicago-Kent Law Review

With the rise of non-native-born American politicians, the natural born citizen requirement in the United States Constitution has received much publicity. This note examines the history and background of the requirement that our President be born in this country. This note then focuses on how the increase of globalization should compel Americans to pass a constitutional amendment to repeal the natural born citizen requirement and discusses the reasons why many Americans oppose such a constitutional amendment. The note then explores some of the current misconceptions about globalization and concludes that Americans' fears and misconceptions of globalization may very well prevent …

Discovering Informative Connection Subgraphs In Multi-Relational Graphs, Cartic Ramakrishnan, William Milnor, Matthew Perry, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Discovering patterns in graphs has long been an area of interest. In most approaches to such pattern discovery either quantitative anomalies, frequency of substructure or maximum flow is used to measure the interestingness of a pattern. In this paper we introduce heuristics that guide a subgraph discovery algorithm away from banal paths towards more "informative" ones. Given an RDF graph a user might pose a question of the form: "What are the most relevant ways in which entity X is related to entity Y?" the response to which is a subgraph connecting X to Y. We use our heuristics to …
