A Structured And Personalized Listening Program For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing High School Students: A Curriculum Development Project, Susan Bregman Sep 2005

A Structured And Personalized Listening Program For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing High School Students: A Curriculum Development Project, Susan Bregman

Theses

There are many different kinds of auditory training programs available for use by children who are deaf or hard of hearing. However, there are only a few that are appropriate to be used by high school students and even fewer still that relate to the student's academic courses. An auditory training curriculum for deaf and hard of hearing high school students was developed relating to a New York State regents course in biology using the CardMaster 2020 from Califone. Fifteen key vocabulary words from three biology units were chosen for use in this curriculum. Five of these fifteen words were …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

A novel filarial serine protease inhibitor (SPI) from the human parasitic nematode Onchocerca volvulus, Ov-SPI-1, was identified through the analysis of a molting third-stage larvae expressed sequence tag dataset. Subsequent analysis of the expressed sequence tag datasets of O. volvulus and other filariae identified four other members of this family. These proteins are related to the low molecular weight SPIs originally isolated from Ascaris suumwhere they are believed to protect the parasite from host intestinal proteases. The two Ov-spi transcripts are up-regulated in the molt- ing larvae and adult stages of the development of the parasite. Recombinant Ov-SPI-1 is an …

A Law And Economics Perspective On Terrorism, Nuno M. Garoupa , Jonathan Klick, Francesco Parisi Sep 2005

A Law And Economics Perspective On Terrorism, Nuno M. Garoupa , Jonathan Klick, Francesco Parisi

George Mason University School of Law Working Papers Series

This paper reviews the existing law and economics literature on crime, noting where various models might apply to the terror context. Specifically, it focuses on two strands of the literature, deterrence and incapacitation. Challenging the conventional application of the basic rational agent model of crime in the context of terrorism, it considers anti-terror measures enacted by different countries, highlighting how the details of the laws correspond to the insights from economic models of crime. In conclusion, the paper proposes an efficient sorting mechanism in which individuals will be provided with adequate incentives to reveal their type to law enforcement authorities.

A Cross-National And Intermedia Study Of U.S. And European Online Newspapers: The Depth And Breadth Of International News Coverage, Yana Terukhova Sep 2005

A Cross-National And Intermedia Study Of U.S. And European Online Newspapers: The Depth And Breadth Of International News Coverage, Yana Terukhova

Theses

This study examines 1 92 newspaper issues by the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Times, the Independent, and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung during one month. The purpose of the study is twofold: to compare depth and breadth of international news coverage (1) by U.S. and European online newspapers and (2) by the printed and online New York Times. A cross-national comparison reveals broader coverage in the U.S. newspapers; the European newspapers offer deeper coverage in hypertext dimension. Based on the content analysis, the online New York Times covers more international news, while the printed edition allocates a larger part …

Ritsim: Distributed Systemc Simulation, David Richard Cox Sep 2005

Ritsim: Distributed Systemc Simulation, David Richard Cox

Theses

Parallel or distributed simulation is becoming more than a novel way to speedup design evaluation; it is becoming necessary for simulating modern processors in a reasonable timeframe. As architectural features become faster, smaller, and more complex, designers are interested in obtaining detailed and accurate performance and power estimations. Uniprocessor simulators may not be able to meet such demands. The RITSim project uses SystemC to model a processor microarchitecture and memory subsystem in great detail. SystemC is a C++ library built on a discrete-event simulation kernel. Many projects have successfully implemented parallel discrete-event simulation (PDES) frameworks to distribute simulation among several …

The Recognition Of Same-Sex Relationships: Comparative Institutional Analysis, Contested Social Goals, And Strategic Institutional Choice, Nancy J. Knauer Sep 2005

The Recognition Of Same-Sex Relationships: Comparative Institutional Analysis, Contested Social Goals, And Strategic Institutional Choice, Nancy J. Knauer

ExpressO

The emerging field of comparative institutional analysis (CIA) has much to offer public policy analysts. However, the failure of CIA to address the dynamic process through which social goals are articulated limits the scope of its application to the largely prescriptive pronouncements of legal scholars. By examining the movement for equal recognition of same-sex relationships, this Essay builds on the basic observations of CIA and introduces a new dimension, namely the dynamic process through which social goals are articulated and social change is pursued. The acknowledgment that the production of social goals involves institutional behavior, as well as multiple sites …

Forty-Two: The Hitchhiker's Guide To Teaching Legal Research To The Google Generation, Ian Gallacher Sep 2005

Forty-Two: The Hitchhiker's Guide To Teaching Legal Research To The Google Generation, Ian Gallacher

ExpressO

Students are coming to law school increasingly dependent on computers to serve their research needs. And they expect that computerized legal research will be both more efficient and more effective than book-based research. These expectations place students in conflict with traditionalists who point to the inherent limitations of computer-assisted legal research and the dangers in relying on legal research conducted entirely in electronic databases. These traditionalists favor a “books first,” if not a “books only,” approach. This paper explores the cultural conflict between the traditionalists and the “Google generation,” evaluates the dangers associated with computer-assisted legal research, and proposes a …

Subprime Standardization: How Rating Agencies Allow Predatory Lending To Flourish In The Secondary Mortgage Market, David J. Reiss Sep 2005

Subprime Standardization: How Rating Agencies Allow Predatory Lending To Flourish In The Secondary Mortgage Market, David J. Reiss

ExpressO

Predatory lending, the origination of loans with abusive terms to homeowners, is rampant in the subprime mortgage market. In the last few years, many states responded to this problem by enacting consumer protection laws. Large segments of the lending industry have opposed these laws. In large part because of these complaints, momentum is building on three fronts to standardize the operations of the subprime mortgage market.

First, federal regulators are preempting the application of these laws to a broad array of lending institutions and Congress is considering legislation to preempt their application to the remaining financial institutions that are still …
