Words And Their Primary Associates: A Comparison Of Deaf And Hearing Students, Carol Convertino

Theses

This word association study compared the primary associates given by deaf college students with those from a set of hearing norms. Forty common words were selected from the norms; twenty category names for which the primary associate was an exemplar (or member of that category) and twenty exemplars for which the primary associate was the category name. Overall, deaf students showed a similar pattern of responses to the hearing norms, although the strength of the primary associates for the deaf students was not as strong as for the hearing students. Comparing responses to the two groups of stimuli, hearing students …

Awareness Of False Information: Urban Legends, Erin Fernsler Sep 2005

Awareness Of False Information: Urban Legends, Erin Fernsler

Theses

It is typical for people to believe urban legends. An urban legend is any modern, fictional story, told as truth that reaches a wide audience by being passed from person to person. The study of urban legends helps us be more alert to false information in our everyday lives. There are very limited resources about urban legends and the impact of the stories on deaf culture. There are very few stories that are common in the deaf community. There are plenty of books about urban legends, but none includes deaf people. This is a problem for the deaf students because …

The Implications Of “Pay-For-Performance” Reimbursement For Otolaryngology – Head And Neck Surgery, David M. Cognetti, David Reiter

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Papers

Objective: To introduce otolaryngologists to outcomes-linked reimbursement ("pay-for-performance"), identify clinical practice implications and recommend changes for successful transition from the traditional "pay-for-effort" reimbursement model. Study design: Policy review Results: Payers are actively linking reimbursement to quality. Since the Institute of Medicine issued its report on medical errors in 1999, there has been much public and private concern over patient safety. In an effort to base health care payment on quality, "pay-for-performance" programs reward or penalize hospitals and physicians for their ability to maintain standards of care established by payers and regulatory groups. More than 100 such programs are operational in …

The Deaf Sixth Sense: Fact Or Fiction? Deaf Identification By Deaf And Hearing Observers, Sarah Bienias Sep 2005

The Deaf Sixth Sense: Fact Or Fiction? Deaf Identification By Deaf And Hearing Observers, Sarah Bienias

Theses

Many deaf people believe that they possess a "sixth sense" which allows them to intuitively know if another person is deaf or hearing. Research indicating differences in deaf people's mannerisms, language use, and attitudes when compared to hearing people is discussed in this paper. This study tested that theory by videotaping native and non-native users of ASL(both hearing and deaf) in a natural conversation. This videotape was then shown to three groups of subjects - one deaf, one hearing with experience in ASL and Deaf Culture, and one hearing without exposure to ASL and Deaf Culture. The subjects were asked …
