Trade Mark Dilution In Singapore: The Aftermath Of Mcdonald’S V Mactea, David Llewelyn Oct 2005

Trade Mark Dilution In Singapore: The Aftermath Of Mcdonald’S V Mactea, David Llewelyn

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In a unanimous decision delivered in September 2004, the Court of Appeal of Singapore has ruled against McDonald's Corporation in its attempts to stop a small Singapore company, Future Enterprises Pty Ltd, from registering its marks "MacNoodles", "MacTea" and "MacChocolate". This case has international significance as the Singapore court ruled, confirming the position taken by courts in a number of other jurisdictions, that McDonald's did not have an exclusive right over the prefix "Mc" in relation to food and beverages in the absence of deception or confusion. However, Singapore's trade mark laws have since undergone a major revamp. Under the …

Informal Animation Sketching With K-Sketch, Richard C. Davis Oct 2005

Informal Animation Sketching With K-Sketch, Richard C. Davis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Animation is a powerful medium that is accessible to few, because current animation tools are extremely complex. This complexity arises partially from current tools’ focus on precise, often unnecessary details and partially from the difficulty of finding a small but sufficiently powerful set of tool features. We are designing K-Sketch, an informal 2D animation tool that uses sketching and demonstration to radically reduce the time needed to create an animation. Our field studies investigating the needs of current anima-tion tool users and would-be users are helping us to mini-mize complexity by showing us how to prioritize the many possible tool …

When 2 Or 3 Come Together, Kelsi Brown Corkran, Tracey L. Meares Oct 2005

When 2 Or 3 Come Together, Kelsi Brown Corkran, Tracey L. Meares

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

This article investigates policies that are responsive to crime in disadvantaged, urban neighborhoods from a community-based context. The vehicle is an analysis of a community-wide prayer vigil held in Chicago in May of 1997. The vigil resulted from a collaboration between the Chicago Police Department and hundreds of (mostly) African- American churches on Chicago’s West Side. Strikingly, the local police district’s commander facilitated the vigil. We explain the sociological and political significance of this collaboration by drawing upon the “Chicago School” of urban sociology and demonstrating theoretically and empirically the potential for the collaboration, through the integration of key community …

Constructing Saigyo: Poetry, Biography, And Medieval Reception, Jack C. Stoneman

Faculty Publications

The late Heian-period poet/monk Saigyō (西行1118-1190) has long been considered one of the most talented of Japan’s waka poets. His poetry and his legend have found their place in elite and popular culture, spanning social class as well as multiple fields of cultural production, such as poetry, travel literature, painting, woodblock prints, nō and kabuki, and Buddhist tales, to name a few. This study aims to present the reader with a critical analysis of Saigyō, his poetry, and his legend by answering several key questions. Who was the historical Saigyō that lived from 1118 to 1190? How did he become …

Validating Institutional Commitment To Outreach At Land-Grant Universities: Listening To The Voices Of Community Partners, David J. Weerts

Journal of Extension

The need for public understanding and awareness of the value of university Extension and outreach is at an all-time high due to flattening Extension budgets and recent criticisms about higher education's commitment to public service. Drawing on interviews from community partners in three states, this article examines how community partners formulate their perceptions about an institution's commitment to its outreach mission. Community partners form their opinions about institutional commitment to engagement through a combination of three factors: language and symbolic actions of campus leadership, personal experiences with faculty and staff, and success in navigating the complex structures of the university.

Strengthening Integration Of Land Use Research And Outreach Through Innovative Web Technology, John S. Rozum, Emily Wilson, Chester Arnold Oct 2005

Strengthening Integration Of Land Use Research And Outreach Through Innovative Web Technology, John S. Rozum, Emily Wilson, Chester Arnold

Journal of Extension

The University of Connecticut has long used geospatial information as a component of its Extension programs on land use policy. In recent years, increased use of remote sensing and geographic information systems has created a "technology gap," as sources of data outpace the ability of many communities to make use of it. The NEMO program has developed several Web sites that attempt to bridge this gap. Connecticut's Changing Landscape uses a range of approaches to disseminate information to audiences of varying geospatial sophistication. These techniques help Extension to serve a broader audience and also strengthen the ties between research and …

Support For A Delivery Train Based Material Handling Mechanism, Sai P. Boyedapu Oct 2005

Support For A Delivery Train Based Material Handling Mechanism, Sai P. Boyedapu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Modeling a delivery train system is more challenging than traditional forklift systems as the delivery train model consists of a tugger, cart and a controller that combine to deliver materials within a manufacturing plant. Also, the decision logic for selection of carts and tuggers, joining of loads to particular delivery trains is more complicated than forklift systems. Simulation software such as Arena, Automod and Flexsim do not provide direct support for modeling delivery train systems.

In this thesis, an object-oriented, platform and language independent model of a delivery train was designed. The model was then implemented as an extension to …

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Diabetes mellitus is a group of conditions characterized by hyperglycemia due to an inability to produce or properly utilize insulin. The majority of cases fall into two categories, Type I and Type 2. Type I results from the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β-cells of the islets. The beta cells are the exclusive source of insulin and the patient becomes entirely dependent on exogenous insulin to survive. Patients with Type 2 are distinguished by insulin resistance, a condition that develops due to the inability of the body to effectively use the insulin being produced. The β-cells gradually lose their ability to …

Still Dissatisfied After All These Years: Intellectual Property, Post-Wto China, And The Avoidable Cycle Of Futility, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

Commentators have widely discussed the piracy and counterfeiting problems in China. Every year, the United States is estimated to lose billions of dollars due to piracy and counterfeiting in the country alone. Published as part of the U.S.-China Trade: Opportunities and Challenges Symposium, this Essay focuses on the recent debate about whether the U.S. administration should file a formal complaint against China with the Dispute Settlement Body of the World Trade Organization over inadequate enforcement of intellectual property rights.

The Essay begins by articulating four reasons why the administration should not do so. It then compares the approach recently proposed …

The U.S. Libel Law Conundrum And The Necessity Of Defensive Corporate Measures In Lessening International Internet Libel Liability, Blake Cooper Oct 2005

The U.S. Libel Law Conundrum And The Necessity Of Defensive Corporate Measures In Lessening International Internet Libel Liability, Blake Cooper

Connecticut Journal of International Law

The tort of libel, "a defamatory statement expressed in a fixed medium,' 2 is neither a unique nor revolutionary concept to Americans. The ability to sue over damage to reputation has been recognized as a legal right longer than relatively recent concepts of freedom of speech.3 From its genesis as a legal cause of action available primarily to royalty and governments to suppress criticism, libel has evolved into its current form as a common law tort available to individuals to protect the economic interests associated with their reputation.4 The use of libel actions subsequent to technological innovations in interpersonal communications …

Divergence And Diversity In Post-Communist European Human Rights Cases, James A. Sweeney Oct 2005

Divergence And Diversity In Post-Communist European Human Rights Cases, James A. Sweeney

Connecticut Journal of International Law

The enlargement of the Council of Europe at the end of the Cold War presents many significant challenges for its most well know creation, the European Court of Human Rights.' Given the prolific nature of the Court's jurisprudence both within and outside Europe, the implications of the Court's response for international human rights law are profound. This article explores the influence of the "local context" upon the Court's reasoning in cases brought against the newer members of the Council of Europe from Central and Eastern Europe.

In an important sense, the local context gives rise to every case brought before …
