Vincentian Simplicity: A Core Leadership Trait, Thomas Mckenna C.M., S.T.D. Oct 2005

Vincentian Simplicity: A Core Leadership Trait, Thomas Mckenna C.M., S.T.D.

Vincentian Studies

In a time when there is an increasing gap between appearances and reality, the Vincentian virtue of simplicity—having one’s inner values and motivations match one’s outer behavior—is ever more essential. Vincent de Paul exemplified simplicity. He said it was a virtue of God and Jesus and that it was impossible to serve poor persons effectively without it. Elizabeth Seton also sought and exhibited a genuine presence in her relationships, both in her personal life and with those she served. As both saints demonstrated, simplicity is necessary for leadership. Authority is derived from faith that a leader truly is the person …

Leadership In Darkness And Light: Gender Considerations, Susanne Dumbleton Ph.D. Oct 2005

Leadership In Darkness And Light: Gender Considerations, Susanne Dumbleton Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

When certain leadership styles are assigned by gender, both men and women are stifled and shortchanged. Susanne Dumbleton examines the pitfalls of the traditional characteristics and types of actions that have been prescribed for each gender, especially for women. She defines politics as “the use and abuse of power,” and when women try to ignore politics, “passive complicity, irresponsible withdrawal, sacrifice [of their] destiny, and active complicity” can result. Each is explained in detail. Effective servant leaders of any gender must have a realistic view of human nature and maintain their faith in it despite its many negative aspects. They …

The Promise Of Internet Intermediary Liability, Ronald J. Mann, Seth R. Belzley Oct 2005

The Promise Of Internet Intermediary Liability, Ronald J. Mann, Seth R. Belzley

William & Mary Law Review

The Internet has transformed the economics of communication, creating a spirited debate about the proper role of federal, state, and international governments in regulating conduct related to the Internet. Many argue that Internet communications should be entirely self-regulated because such communications cannot or should not be the subject of government regulation. The advocates of that approach would prefer a no-regulation zone around Internet communications, based largely on the unexamined view that Internet activity is fundamentally different in a way that justifies broad regulatory exemption. At the same time, some kinds of activity that the Internet facilitates undisputedly violate widely shared …

Precedents, Variables, And Options In Planning A U.S. Military Disengagement Strategy From Iraq, W. Andrew Terrill Dr., Conrad C. Crane Dr. Oct 2005

Precedents, Variables, And Options In Planning A U.S. Military Disengagement Strategy From Iraq, W. Andrew Terrill Dr., Conrad C. Crane Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The questions of how to empower the Iraqis most effectively and then progressively withdraw non-Iraqi forces from that country is one of the most important policy problems currently facing the United States. The authors seek to present the U.S. situation in Iraq in all of its complexity and ambiguity, with policy recommendations for how that withdrawal strategy might be most effectively implemented. They consider previous instances of U.S. military occupation of foreign countries and the difficulty of maintaining domestic support for such operations. The authors view the empowerment of a viable Iraqi central government and a security force to defend …

Natural Allies? Regional Security In Asia And Prospects For Indo-American Strategic Cooperation, Stephen J. Blank Dr. Oct 2005

Natural Allies? Regional Security In Asia And Prospects For Indo-American Strategic Cooperation, Stephen J. Blank Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

One of the hallmarks of the two Bush administrations' foreign and defense policies has been a growing rapprochement with India. Indeed, in June 2005 the U.S. Government signed a defense agreement with that country. In part, this rapprochement is driven by and coincides with India's increasingly visible role as a major Asian power. This monograph seeks to illuminate India's rising power and capabilities with regard to the key regions on its periphery: the Persian Gulf, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia. The author also considers the major issues pertaining to India's bilateral defense agenda with the United States. By revealing the …

Chinese National Security: Decisionmaking Under Stress, Andrew Scobell Dr., Larry M. Wortzel Dr. Oct 2005

Chinese National Security: Decisionmaking Under Stress, Andrew Scobell Dr., Larry M. Wortzel Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This volume represents the fruits of a conference held at the U.S. Army War College in September 2005 on the theme of "Chinese Crisis Management." One of the major debates that emerged among participants was whether all the case studies under examination constituted crises in the eyes of China's leaders. The consensus was that not all of those incidents were perceived as crises. As a result the rubric of "decision making under stress" was adopted as presenters revised their papers for publication.

Resistant Turfgrasses For Improved Chinch Bug Management, Tiffany Heng-Moss, Frederick P. Baxendale, Robert C. Shearman, Thomas E. Eickhoff

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Researchers at the University of Nebraska evaluated selected cool- and warm-season turfgrasses for resistance to chinch bugs in the Blissus complex, and documented the presence of multiple chinch bug resistance in these turfgrasses.

Greenhouse and field screening studies were initiated to search for cool- and warm-season turfgrasses with resistance to chinch bugs in the Blissus complex. Several warmseason turfgrasses (buffalograss, zoysiagrass, and bermudagrass) with resistance to the western chinch bug have been identified.

Studies are currently underway to investigate the biochemical and physiological mechanisms underlying resistant turfgrasses. This information is fundamentally important for formulating plant breeding strategies, and subsequently developing …

Informal Animation Sketching With K-Sketch, Richard Christopher Davis Oct 2005

Informal Animation Sketching With K-Sketch, Richard Christopher Davis

Research Collection School of Computing and Information Systems

Animation is a powerful medium that is accessible to few, because current animation tools are extremely complex. This complexity arises partially from current tools’ focus on precise, often unnecessary details and partially from the difficulty of finding a small but sufficiently powerful set of tool features. We are designing K-Sketch, an informal 2D animation tool that uses sketching and demonstration to radically reduce the time needed to create an animation. Our field studies investigating the needs of current anima-tion tool users and would-be users are helping us to mini-mize complexity by showing us how to prioritize the many possible tool …

china’s situation lends itself to hyperbole. the people’s republic of china (prc) has the largest population in the world, the fastest growing economy in the world, the largest army in the world, the largest middle class in the world, a permanent seat on the united nations security council, a manned space programme, a nuclear arsenal, and so on. but analysts, commentators and policymakers have yet to decide just how to understand china.

Adverse Possession Of Identity: Radical Theory, Conventional Practice, Jessica A. Clarke Oct 2005

Adverse Possession Of Identity: Radical Theory, Conventional Practice, Jessica A. Clarke

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Article examines the conditions under which acting as if one has a particular legal status is sufficient to secure that status in the eyes of the law. Legal determinations of common-law marriage, functional parenthood, and racial identity share striking similarities to adverse possession law – these doctrines confer legal status on those who are merely acting as if they have that legal status. In each case, the elements of a legal claim are strikingly similar: physical proximity, notoriety and publicity, a claim of right, consistent and continuous behavior, and public acquiescence. The reason public performance is critical is that …

A Dsp-Based Active Disturbance Rejection Control Design For A 1-Kw H-Bridge Dc-Dc Power Converter, Bosheng Sun, Zhiqiang Gao Oct 2005

A Dsp-Based Active Disturbance Rejection Control Design For A 1-Kw H-Bridge Dc-Dc Power Converter, Bosheng Sun, Zhiqiang Gao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents the design and implementation of an advanced digital controller for a 1-kW H-bridge dc-dc power converter. A new control algorithm based on the active disturbance rejection concept is developed to cope with the highly nonlinear dynamics of the converter and the disturbances. An experimental digital control system is used to implement the new control strategy. It consists of a digital control board based on the TMS320C6711 digital signal processor chip, an analogy I/O board, and a complex programmable logic device pulsewidth-modulation generation board. Using a newly developed bandwidth-parametrization technique, an autotuning method based on noise quantification is …

Dynamic Voltage Scaling Techniques For Power Efficient Video Decoding, Ben Lee, Eriko Nurvitadhi, Reshma Dixit, Chansu Yu, Myungchul Kim Oct 2005

Dynamic Voltage Scaling Techniques For Power Efficient Video Decoding, Ben Lee, Eriko Nurvitadhi, Reshma Dixit, Chansu Yu, Myungchul Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a comparison of power-aware video decoding techniques that utilize dynamic voltage scaling (DVS). These techniques reduce the power consumption of a processor by exploiting high frame variability within a video stream. This is done through scaling of the voltage and frequency of the processor during the video decoding process. However, DVS causes frame deadline misses due to inaccuracies in decoding time predictions and granularity of processor settings used. Four techniques were simulated and compared in terms of power consumption, accuracy, and deadline misses. In addition, this paper proposes the frame-data computation aware (FDCA) technique, which is …

It's Not Easy Being A Cast Iron Bitch: Sexual Difference And The Female Action Hero, Diana Dominguez Oct 2005

It's Not Easy Being A Cast Iron Bitch: Sexual Difference And The Female Action Hero, Diana Dominguez

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Lt. Ellen Ripley of the Alien series of films, Sarah Connor of the Terminator series, and Lindsey Brigman of The Abyss are examples of a special category of female role in Hollywood – the female action hero. To varying degrees of success, the three characters mentioned above defy the principal dilemma filmmakers seem to have in creating a character that can reconcile the presumably mutually exclusive aspects of cast iron bitch and traditional patriarchal societal views of femininity. Ripley, Connor, and Brigman infiltrate the male-dominated category of the action hero, but they are not a direct feminine challenge to the …

Toward A Common Law Of Ecosystem Services, J.B. Ruhl Oct 2005

Toward A Common Law Of Ecosystem Services, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This article suggests ways in which the common law can integrate concepts of ecosystem services to fulfill pragmatic objectives of common law doctrine. Rather than requiring a radical departure from traditional common law doctrine as is often proposed in environmental literature on the common law, ecosystem services can fold seamlessly into existing common law principles as a source of new knowledge and changed circumstances.

Does The Constitution Apply To The Actions Of The United States Anti-Doping Agency?, Dionne L. Koller

All Faculty Scholarship

Since its formation in 2000, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has aggressively pursued athletes who are believed to have used performance-enhancing substances and has aggressively prosecuted those who ultimately test positive. To many, this is a long overdue response to the growing problem of doping in sports. But to others, USADA's actions, and the federal government's support of these efforts, has sparked enormous controversy. This article examines USADA and its relationship to the federal government to determine whether USADA's actions could be constrained by the Constitution. While it is clear that USADA has very close ties to the federal …
