Reconstructability Analysis As A Tool For Identifying Gene-Gene Interactions In Studies Of Human Diseases: Ieee Version, Martin Zwick, Stephen Shervais, Patricia Kramer Oct 2005

Reconstructability Analysis As A Tool For Identifying Gene-Gene Interactions In Studies Of Human Diseases: Ieee Version, Martin Zwick, Stephen Shervais, Patricia Kramer

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

There are a number of human diseases that are caused by the epistatic interaction of multiple genes. Detecting these interactions with standard statistical tools is difficult, because there may be an interaction effect, but minimal or no main effect. Reconstructability analysis uses Shannon’s information theory to detect relationships between variables in categorical datasets. We apply reconstructability analysis to data generated by five different models of gene-gene interaction, with heritability levels from 0.053 to 0.008, using 200 controls and 200 cases. We find that even with heritability levels as low as 0.008, and with the inclusion of 50 non-associated genes in …

Articles

We report on HST/STIS spectra of the Ly-Alpha emission in the central dominant galaxies in three rich clusters of galaxies. We find evidence for a population of clouds in the intracluster medium. We detect 10 Ly-Alpha absorption systems towards the nucleus of NGC1275 with columns of N(HI) ~10^12 to 10^14 cm^−2. These columns would not have been detected in the 21 cm line, but are easily detected in the Ly-Alpha line. Most of the absorption features are located in the broad wings of the emission line. The detected absorption features are most consistent with associated nuclear absorption systems. There is …

Law And Economic Analysis On The Relationship Of Transparency And Voluntary Redistribution Of Wealth: Pursuing Both Efficiency And Equity At Once, Woo-Jong Jon Oct 2005

Law And Economic Analysis On The Relationship Of Transparency And Voluntary Redistribution Of Wealth: Pursuing Both Efficiency And Equity At Once, Woo-Jong Jon

ExpressO

Charitable works can be analyzed as public goods or externalities. Eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, basic science research, and support for art and religion are public goods. These have non-excludability and non-rivalry, which are the defining characteristics of public goods, making philanthropist’s honor spread over more beneficiaries. And to achieve universal primary education is an externality because educations for the unlearned peolpe benefits both themselves and society at large. And in this knowledge and information era education is more and more important, thus society has to support the students who desire to escape from poverty helping them to receive …

Resource Effects On Online Traffic Of U.S. And Foreign Online Retailers, Deborah Colton, Gundula Luecke Oct 2005

Resource Effects On Online Traffic Of U.S. And Foreign Online Retailers, Deborah Colton, Gundula Luecke

Presentations and other scholarship

While leveraging ciritical resources becomes increasingly important in the emerging online marketplace, research addressing the link between resources and online performance is scarce. Despite recognizing the Web as a "borderless economy" few studies have explored the international nature and associated resources of e-commerce. This study builds on the resource-based view of the firm to assess the effects of resources (brand strength, foreign market know-how, market orientation, and affiliate network) on online retailer venture success in terms of online traffic, a performance measure specific to firms' e-commerce activities. The international nature of the firm is modeled as a moderating factor affecting …

Generation X And Generation Golf: What Advertisers Need To Know When Targeting German And American Thirty-Somethings, Frauke Hachtmann Oct 2005

Generation X And Generation Golf: What Advertisers Need To Know When Targeting German And American Thirty-Somethings, Frauke Hachtmann

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Presentations

While most of the academic research currently focuses on defining and analyzing Generation Y, trade publications in the advertising and media field are publishing more and more articles about Generation X, primarily because this segment has been extremely difficult to reach for advertisers (Overington, 2005). American companies have conducted business in Germany for many years (and vice versa) and need to understand the next generation that is going to drive global business in a new system that replaced the Cold War and reveals the interdependence of economies: globalization. The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast what is …

A New Weapon Against Piracy: Patent Protection As An Alternative Strategy For Enforcement Of Digital Rights, Dennis S. Fernandez, Matthew Chivvis, Mengfei Huang

ExpressO

This article illustrates how patents and copyrights complement each other to provide a better defense for creative works. Copyrights protect expression, and patents protect underlying functions. Currently, the one-time strengths of copyrights are being eroded as courts allow new technologies to flourish which enable digital reproduction and piracy. This has encouraged companies and industries to move increasingly to patent protection and any company that fails to pursue this trend may be left behind. In sum, patents are a worthwhile strategy because they assist copyright owners in controlling the technology that enables infringement while copyrights alone would leave a company vulnerable …
