Religion And Support Of Democracy: Protestantism, Catholicism, And The Support For Democracy In Mexico, Sara Jolly Jan 2005

Religion And Support Of Democracy: Protestantism, Catholicism, And The Support For Democracy In Mexico, Sara Jolly

Honors Theses

The findings are consistent with other recent studies in Latin America. Eric Patterson found a similar pattern in Argentina and Chile in his study in 2003 (Patterson 2003). The data shows that despite Mexico’s history ofstrained Church/ State relations and a 70-year authoritarian rule, the Protestants in Mexico tend to hold similar beliefs on the support for democracy as the Protestants of other Latin American countries.

The Value Of An Arts Rich Education: Why Every School Should Teach The Arts, Holly Louise Buntin Jan 2005

The Value Of An Arts Rich Education: Why Every School Should Teach The Arts, Holly Louise Buntin

Honors Theses

This thesis aims to prove that the arts should be a major component in every student’s education. Statistics, research findings, and case studies from throughout the years were compared and compiled together in order to make a strong argument in favor of the arts. The National Art Education Association website provided many statistics as did the National Center for Education Statistics. Two of the specific studies presented in this thesis came from Champions of Change, a collection of seven major studies done by professional academics. It was produced by the Arts Education Partnership, the President’s Committee on the Arts and …

The Pitfalls Of International Integration: A Comment On The Bush Proposal And Its Aftermath, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Jan 2005

The Pitfalls Of International Integration: A Comment On The Bush Proposal And Its Aftermath, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

In January 2003, the Bush Administration proposed a new system for taxing corporate dividends, under which domestic shareholders in U.S. corporations would not be taxed on dividends they received, provided the corporation distributed these dividends out of after-tax earnings (the “Bush Proposal”). The Bush Proposal was introduced in Congress on February 27, 2003. Ultimately, however, Congress balked at enacting full-?edged dividend exemption. Instead, in the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 (“JGTRRA”) as enacted on May 28, 2003, a lower rate of 15% was adopted for dividends paid by domestic and certain foreign corporations,1 and the capital …

Voice Over Internet Protocol And The Wiretap Act: Is Your Conversation Protected?, Daniel B. Garrie, Matthew J. Armstrong, Donald P. Harris

Seattle University Law Review

10101101: Is this sequence of digits voice or data? To a computer, voice is a sequence of digits and data is a sequence of digits. The law has defined 10101101 to be data, and 10101001 to be voice communications. Courts have constructed a distinction between data, 10101101, and voice, 10101001. However, that distinction is blurred when voice and data are simultaneously transmitted through the same medium. The courts forbid third parties to tap or monitor voice communications, yet permit data packets to be tracked, stored, and sold by third parties with the implied consent of either party engaged in the …

D. A. Kolb's Theory Of Experiential Learning - Implications For The Development Of Music Theory Instructional Material, Michael Lively Jan 2005

D. A. Kolb's Theory Of Experiential Learning - Implications For The Development Of Music Theory Instructional Material, Michael Lively

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Undergraduate students often find music theory courses to be among the most difficult and sometimes most frustrating experiences of their early college careers. The difficulty may stem from the tendency of music theory instruction to rely heavily upon the learner's ability to process information with abstract modes of cognition. Many students have either limited experience with abstract intellectual tasks or limited aptitude for cognitive abstraction. This essay will explore the process of adapting music theory instructional material for the learning styles of individual students.

Issue-Related Learning In A Gubernatorial Campaign : A Panel Study., Stephen C. Craig, James G. Kane, Jason Gainous Jan 2005

Issue-Related Learning In A Gubernatorial Campaign : A Panel Study., Stephen C. Craig, James G. Kane, Jason Gainous

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This study is based on data from a three-wave telephone panel survey conducted during the 1998 governor's race in Florida. The evidence suggests that a considerable amount of issue-related learning (having to do with candidate policy stands and group endorsements) took place over the course of the general election campaign, though substantial differences were observed from one issue area to the next. Further analysis indicates that learning was especially likely to occur among voters who (a) were more knowledgeable about political affairs to start with(confirming that the so-called "knowledge gap" may be exacerbated during campaigns); (b)scored high on a measure …

Cryopreservation Of Human Hematopoietic Stem And Progenitor Cells Loaded With Trehalose : Transient Permeabilization Via The Adenosine Triphosphate-Dependent P2z Receptor Channel., Sandhya S. Buchanan, Michael A. Menze, Steven C. Hand, David W. Pyatt, John F. Carpenter Jan 2005

Cryopreservation Of Human Hematopoietic Stem And Progenitor Cells Loaded With Trehalose : Transient Permeabilization Via The Adenosine Triphosphate-Dependent P2z Receptor Channel., Sandhya S. Buchanan, Michael A. Menze, Steven C. Hand, David W. Pyatt, John F. Carpenter

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HPCs) are a heterogenic population of cells used to treat a number of human diseases. Multilineage differentiation is a required function in successful hematopoietic reconstitution after transplantation of cryopreserved grafts. Conventional use of the cryoprotectant dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has resulted in some reports of infusion related toxicity attributed to DMSO and/or damage to cells during freezethawing procedures. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of trehalose, a nontoxic disaccharide of glucose, as an alternative cryoprotectant. Trehalose was introduced into HPCs using the P2Z receptor, known to form nonselective pores in the presence …

When Messages Are The Medium: Researching Best Practices In Online Education, Sharon S. Kleinman Jan 2005

When Messages Are The Medium: Researching Best Practices In Online Education, Sharon S. Kleinman

Iowa Journal of Communication

This paper discusses a comparative case study of online media history courses designed from the constructivist perspective (Moon, 1999). Data were collected using online participant observation, the course management systems automated tracking of students' course website usage, and online questionnaires. Data were analyzed/or insights regarding factors affecting student participation, satisfaction, and achievement. Innovative strategies for designing online learning environments that encourage interaction, active learning, and academic integrity were field-tested and critiqued. Among the innovations that shaped "classroom" dialogue and fostered an active learning community were: (1) using and publicizing the course management systems capabilities for tracking students' course website usage, …

War Or Peace: It’S Time To Ratify The 1954 Hague Convention For The Protection Of Cultural Property In The Event Of Armed Conflicts, Juli Campagna Jan 2005

War Or Peace: It’S Time To Ratify The 1954 Hague Convention For The Protection Of Cultural Property In The Event Of Armed Conflicts, Juli Campagna

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

It is time for the United States to reaffirm its recognition of the equal rights of all world people to their cultural inheritance. Our reputation depends on it.

In this Article, I will first discuss the rampant looting and destruction of civilization's cultural property occurring in Iraq since the American-led occupation. The U.S. Department of Defenses's response to this violation of international law is: "stuff happens." In arguing that the United States must ratify and adhere to the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, I then will consider the historical development …

The Billable Hours Derby: Empirical Data On The Problems And Pressure Points, Susan Saab Fortney Jan 2005

The Billable Hours Derby: Empirical Data On The Problems And Pressure Points, Susan Saab Fortney

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

If you ask law firm attorneys to identify their biggest complaint related to private law practice, most will probably respond with one word: billing. At the same time, clients are likely to identify billing as their most serious concern associated with obtaining legal services. The irony in clients and attorneys sharing frustration over hourly billing relates to the fact that the initial interest in hourly billing stemmed from attorneys' desire to be efficient and to maximize their earnings and clients' preference for only paying for the actual time expended on their behalf. Since the 1960s, hourly billing has evolved as …

Method, Mediations, And The Moral Dimensions Of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, Janet L. Dolgin Jan 2005

Method, Mediations, And The Moral Dimensions Of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, Janet L. Dolgin

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This essay describes an approach to moral conundrums (such as those occasioned by reproductive technology, including preimplantation genetic diagnosis) in a heterogeneous society. The approach, referred to as "mediative," is designed to clarify aspects of the process of moral contemplation. It does not aim to secure any particular sort of resolution or conclusion. In this sense, the approach is not exclusively committed to any particular religious or philosophical perspective regarding bioethical questions and can most felicitously accommodate many of them.

The approach reflects an anthropological apperception: the effort to understand the Other (the stranger, the outsider, the foreigner) depends on …

Nonprofit Interjurisdictionality, Norman I. Silber Jan 2005

Nonprofit Interjurisdictionality, Norman I. Silber

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The federal system of "dual sovereignties" guarantees that most American legal regimes tolerate jurisdictional overlap between the enforcement authority of federal and state agencies. This presentation explores interjurisdictional overlap in the context of nonprofit legal supervision. Notwithstanding the common assumption that "states police mission while the IRS polices money," it is suggested here that the overlap has become much broader than generally has been supposed; that over a wide range of common misconduct among the preponderance of organizations in the nonprofit sector, either the Internal Revenue Service or state authorities could, if they wanted to and in no particular order, …
