Usa Patriot Act : Fallout Of The War On Terrorism, Teresa Przetocki Jan 2005

Usa Patriot Act : Fallout Of The War On Terrorism, Teresa Przetocki

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

September 11, 2001 was truly a historical day, not only for the United States, but also for all nations of the world. The terrorist attacks of that day dramatically changed the concept of domestic security in the United States. As in times of crisis before, civil liberties have become a target. Therein begins a balancing act between civil liberties and national security. The Bush Administration has shown in the time passed since the attack, that the balance is more one-sided: security measures above anything else. Just six weeks after the September 11th terrorist attack, Congress passed the Uniting and Strengthening …

Validating The Impact Of Event Scale With Adolescents : A Look At The September 11, 2001, Terrorist Attacks, Claudia Lingertat

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The current study examined the psychometric properties of the Impact of Event Scale (IES; Horowitz, Wilner, & Alvarez, 1979), a self-report measure of current subjective distress. Twenty-four adolescents from an urban high school were surveyed regarding their experiences from the events of September 11, 2001. The IES showed a moderate correlation with the My Worst Experience Scale (MWES; Hyman, Snook, Berna, & Kohr, 1997). Findings indicate the IES may be effective as a quick screening tool for the intrusive and avoidant symptoms of posttraumatic stress in adolescents pending further research with a larger sample.

Patenting The Minotaur, Bratislav Stanković Jan 2005

Patenting The Minotaur, Bratislav Stanković

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Half man, half bull, the Minotaur was the most fearsome monster in Greek mythology. Human torso and bull’s head, its horns were sharp as knives, its great hooves could kick the life out the strongest of heroes, and its food was human flesh. Yet under the surface, the Minotaur’s myth was sad; his insatiable existence originated in jealousy and lust.

Uncertainty Analysis Of Radionuclide Transport In The Unsaturated Zone At Yucca Mountain, Feng Pan Jan 2005

Uncertainty Analysis Of Radionuclide Transport In The Unsaturated Zone At Yucca Mountain, Feng Pan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study assessed parametric uncertainty of flow and transport parameters of the unsaturated zone at Yucca Mountain and its propagation in unsaturated flow and radionuclide transport using the Monte Carlo method. The random fields of hydraulic parameters (matrix porosity, permeability and sorption coefficient) were generated using the Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) method and used as inputs to a three-dimensional flow and transport code, TOUGH2 developed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. By running TOUGH2 for multiple parameter realizations, means, variances, 5% and 95% percentiles of flow and radionuclide transport simulations were estimated to quantify the optimum predictions and associated predictive …

An Exploratory Study Of Effectiveness In Alumni Relations At Four Research Universities, Jennifer Lynnette Hurwitz Jan 2005

An Exploratory Study Of Effectiveness In Alumni Relations At Four Research Universities, Jennifer Lynnette Hurwitz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Alumni relations programs exist to further the goals of institutions while meeting the interests of alumni (Webb, 1989). In healthy university environments, the relationship between the alumni and the institution is mutually beneficial (Webb, 1989). In an era of accountability, college and university administrators require evidence that programs are satisfying the missions and accomplishing the goals of the institution (Brant, 2002). Alumni relations professionals are challenged to find ways to include as measures of program effectiveness evaluations of the relationship building aspects of alumni programming; The purpose of this research was to explore how senior alumni administrative officers at four …

Analysis Of One Structured Fitness Motivation Intervention On Self-Efficacy, Achievement Goal Orientations And Exercise Adherence In Sedentary And Moderately Active Adults, Matthew R Martin Jan 2005

Analysis Of One Structured Fitness Motivation Intervention On Self-Efficacy, Achievement Goal Orientations And Exercise Adherence In Sedentary And Moderately Active Adults, Matthew R Martin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Currently, many Americans spend extended periods of time in sedentary activities, potentially contributing to a variety of health concerns such as obesity and the onset of many chronic diseases. Given this widespread societal challenge, and using intact university undergraduates as a study sample, this dissertation research first provided descriptive information concerning psychological characteristics of physical appearance self-efficacy and goal orientation as potentially correlated with exercise adherence behavior. A second purpose of this research examined how known effective behavior analytic interventions of instructor-set goals/modeling, public posting, and peer-feedback might affect the research sample's exercise adherence behavior, and might affect linked psychological …

Twenty Techniques For Teaching With Case Studies, Mary R. Sudzina

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Problem-based learning and teaching with case studies are instructional approaches that are increasingly being applied in a variety of disciplines, such as business, law, medicine, and education. Instructors who have experienced traditional, teacher-centered instruction are often looking for ways to successfully integrate case studies, a constructivist, student-centered approach to teaching and learning, into their courses. This paper summarizes a workshop presented at the 2004 MWERA Annual Meeting. That workshop featured a proven 5-step process for case analysis, 20 techniques for facilitating case discussions, and a video of an actual case discussion in progress in which those techniques were demonstrated and …

Parental Characteristics And Satisfaction With Their Child's School: A Comparison Of Public, Voucher, And Charter School Families, Kelli M. Paul, Kim K. Metcalf, Natalie A. Legan Jan 2005

Parental Characteristics And Satisfaction With Their Child's School: A Comparison Of Public, Voucher, And Charter School Families, Kelli M. Paul, Kim K. Metcalf, Natalie A. Legan

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Research suggests that families who make active choices regarding their child’s education differ from families who do not. Differences between families of private (voucher), charter, and public school students were examined using data collected as part of the evaluation of the Cleveland Scholarship and Tutoring Program. While both voucher and charter school families were more satisfied than public school families with their child’s school, charter school families were found to differ from both voucher and public school students in that they were more White, were of higher income, were more likely to be married, and were more highly educated.

Lesson Plan Design For Facilitating Differentiated Instruction, Pamela Hudson Baker, Louise Conn Fleming Jan 2005

Lesson Plan Design For Facilitating Differentiated Instruction, Pamela Hudson Baker, Louise Conn Fleming

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This study examines the role of lesson plan design in helping teacher candidates to meet di-verse learning needs. The authors studied student teachers who had been taught to use a differentiated lesson plan to see if they were differentiating in their planning, assessment, and instruction. They concluded that, indeed, lesson plan design does facilitate differentiation but that instruction, coaching, and examples are also needed.

An Empirical Test Of Stakeholder Influence Strategies Model: Evidence From Business Downsizing In Taiwan , Philip C.F. Tsai, C. Rosa Yeh, Shu-Ling Wu, Ing-Chung Huang Jan 2005

An Empirical Test Of Stakeholder Influence Strategies Model: Evidence From Business Downsizing In Taiwan , Philip C.F. Tsai, C. Rosa Yeh, Shu-Ling Wu, Ing-Chung Huang

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Frooman’s (1999) model of stakeholder influence strategy uses levels of resource dependence to determine the power of stakeholder influence. Our study provides initial empirical tests of his model applied in business downsizing. Data from 18 recently downsized firms in Taiwan, including 9 multi-national firms (MNC’s), were plotted against the Frooman model. We found that resource-dependence along as Frooman theorized could not explain the influence strategies stakeholders (in this case the employees) took in response to firms’ downsizing decisions. Further investigation revealed that the institutional factors had a significant effect on how firms structured their downsizing initiatives and hence changed the …

The rare tau lepton decays to four explicitly identified hadrons have been studied with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring using (7.56 +/- 0.15) fb(-1) of data collected near root s=10.58 GeV. The first statistically significant measurements of B(tau(-)-> K(-)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)nu(tau),excludingK(0))=(7.4 +/- 0.8 +/- 1.1)x10(-4) and B(tau(-)-> K(-)K(+)pi(-)pi(0)nu(tau))=(5.5 +/- 1.4 +/- 1.2)x10(-5) are presented, including the first observation of the decay tau(-)-> K(-)omega nu(tau) with branching fraction, (4.1 +/- 0.6 +/- 0.7)x10(-4). We publish the first upper limit for B(tau(-)-> K(-)K(+)K(-)pi(0)nu(tau))< 4.8(6.1)x10(-6) at 90% (95%) confidence level. We measure for the first time the invariant mass distributions, which together with the branching fraction measurements are important ingredients that can be used to extract the standard model parameters, the strange quark mass, and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa element V-us.

Analysis And Optimization Of The Thermal Performance Of Microchannel Heat Sinks, Dong Liu, S V. Garimella Jan 2005

Analysis And Optimization Of The Thermal Performance Of Microchannel Heat Sinks, Dong Liu, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Purpose – To provide modeling approaches of increasing levels of complexity for the analysis of convective heat transfer in microchannels which offer adequate descriptions of the thermal performance, while allowing easier manipulation of microchannel geometries for the purpose of design optimization of microchannel heat sinks. Design/methodology/approach – A detailed computational fluid dynamics model is first used to obtain baseline results against which five approximate analytical approaches are compared. These approaches include a 1D resistance model, a fin approach, two fin-liquid coupled models, and a porous medium approach. A modified thermal boundary condition is proposed to correctly characterize the heat flux …

A Two-Temperature Model For Solid/Liquid Phase Change In Metal Foams, S. Krishnan, J. Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Transient solid-liquid phase change occurring in a phase-change material (PCM) embedded in a metal foam is investigated. Natural convection in the melt is considered. Volume-averaged mass and momentum equations are employed, with the Brinkman- Forchheimer extension to the Darcy law to model the porous resistance. Owing to the difference in the thermal diffusivities between the metal foam and the PCM, local thermal equilibrium between the two is not assured. Assuming equilibrium melting at the pore scale, separate volume-averaged energy equations are written for the solid metal foam and the PCM and are closed using an interstitial heat transfer coefficient. The …
