Choran Community: The Aesthetics Of Encounter In Literary And Photographic Modernism, Emily M. Hinnov Jan 2005

Choran Community: The Aesthetics Of Encounter In Literary And Photographic Modernism, Emily M. Hinnov

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines novels, photographs, and phototexts by British and American artists published between the world wars in order to argue that these works re-envision community through a narrative aesthetic, which I term the choran moment, that communicates the possibility of genuinely empathetic understanding between self and other. My study of literary and photographic modernism is based upon these modern artists' awareness of an ever-present, organic community allied in common knowledge of the interconnection among humanity offered through convergence with and respect for difference. These choran moments of correlation are key to the aesthetics and therefore the politics of modernist …

Spatial Distribution Of The Common Loon (Gavia Immer) In New Hampshire, Mark W. Brennan Jan 2005

Spatial Distribution Of The Common Loon (Gavia Immer) In New Hampshire, Mark W. Brennan

Doctoral Dissertations

The Common Loon (Gavia immer) is located in many portions of North America. By the early 1970's the Common Loon population in New Hampshire had experienced a dramatic decline in historic numbers. In 1975, the Audubon Society of New Hampshire recognized this problem and established the Loon Preservation Committee (LPC). The intent was to collect information regarding the presence or absence of loons and loon productivity, and, educate the public regarding loon ecology and preservation. This dissertation represents the work completed to fulfill the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Natural Resources Management at the University of New …

Chemical Sensors Based On Swelling Polymer Microspheres And Uncrosslinked Fluorescently-Labelled Molecularly Imprinted Polymers, George K. Mwangi Jan 2005

Chemical Sensors Based On Swelling Polymer Microspheres And Uncrosslinked Fluorescently-Labelled Molecularly Imprinted Polymers, George K. Mwangi

Doctoral Dissertations

Polymer swelling can be achieved by derivatizing a functional group onto the polymer that selectively binds a particular analyte. For example, at low pH, the particles in a hydrogel membrane swell in response to the increased hydrogen ion concentration and the membrane reflects less light. When the refractive index of the membrane is less than that of the particles, swelling decreases the refractive index of the particles. This brings it closer to the refractive index of the membrane, and decreases the scattering of light making the membrane more transparent.

On the other hand if the refractive index of the membrane …

Bridging The Gap Between Asynchronous And Traditional Learning Environments: Technology For Adult Learners, Jayne E. Pelletier Jan 2005

Bridging The Gap Between Asynchronous And Traditional Learning Environments: Technology For Adult Learners, Jayne E. Pelletier

Doctoral Dissertations

The growth of new technologies has caused renewed interest in distance learning and has impacted the instructional delivery of courses. This interest ranges from nontraditional learners to businesses using distance education to meet the needs of employees working in multiple geographic sites. A review of the literature suggests that interaction is an important factor in learning and that improving interaction improves transformational learning and constructivism. Since asynchronous delivery tools can potentially marginalize social and cultural skills prevalent in a classroom setting, new technology may resolve these issues.

This study examines a web-based, VoIP platform (Interwise) as a means for instructional …

The Ecological Christ: Discerning An Ecological Consciousness In The Sermon On The Mount, Nancy J. Miaoulis Jan 2005

The Ecological Christ: Discerning An Ecological Consciousness In The Sermon On The Mount, Nancy J. Miaoulis

Doctoral Dissertations

Ecology is the science that studies the function of communities of life within ecosystems. These systems are bound by an affirmation of relationship. Such relationships are very complex and every part of them is dependent on every other part if they are to maintain the integrity of nature that allows us all to survive.

The adoption of the four principles of ecology: everything is connected to everything else; everything has to go somewhere; nature knows best; and there is no such thing as a free lunch---have been suggested to ensure the survival of all species. However, knowledge of scientific findings …

Long -Term Episodic Memory In Children With Attention -Deficit /Hyperactivity Disorder, Jeffrey S. Skowronek Jan 2005

Long -Term Episodic Memory In Children With Attention -Deficit /Hyperactivity Disorder, Jeffrey S. Skowronek

Doctoral Dissertations

Research on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has indicated that diagnosed children show considerable memory deficits. The majority of tasks that have supported such deficits have focused on working memory and school/semantic-related abilities. Although there is a small body of literature related to long-term memory in children with ADHD, no studies appear to focus on long-term episodic memory, including personal-event memory. This is the case despite clinical and anecdotal evidence suggesting that children with ADHD might show enhanced long-term episodic memory abilities in comparison to those without.

Twenty-one children with ADHD (5 females and 16 males) and 31 children without ADHD (14 …

Can I Get A Witness? The Significance Of Finding A Witness For Liberatory Education, Martha J. Ritter Jan 2005

Can I Get A Witness? The Significance Of Finding A Witness For Liberatory Education, Martha J. Ritter

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is a philosophical inquiry into what it means to be a 'witness' and to 'bear witness'; it is also an investigation into what place witness has in education. I undertake this broad conceptual work to formulate a conception of witness that supports liberatory education---education that aims at freedom from oppression.

The inquiry is rooted in work with writing groups in Bolivia, and the idea that young people may have come to the group to find witnesses. I critically appraise three contemporary proposals that employ the notions of 'witness' and to 'bearing witness' in liberatory education. My critique notes …

Applications Of Fluorescence Detected Sedimentation I Studying The Thermodynamic Impact Of Valence In Non-Ideal Solutions Ii High Affinity Interactions And Biological Media, Rachel R. Kroe Jan 2005

Applications Of Fluorescence Detected Sedimentation I Studying The Thermodynamic Impact Of Valence In Non-Ideal Solutions Ii High Affinity Interactions And Biological Media, Rachel R. Kroe

Doctoral Dissertations

The recent addition of the fluorescence detection optical system (FDS) to the currently available absorbance and interference optical systems on the analytical ultracentrifuge has greatly expanded the wide application of this technique. The new FDS is able to detect very low concentrations of fluorophore allowing the study of high affinity interactions (Kd ∼ pM) not previously accessible with the absorbance optics. The types of high affinity interactions that can be explored include drug-protein interactions, lipid-receptor interactions, DNA-protein interactions and protein-protein interactions. Selective labeling of one or both of the macromolecules can allow elegant dissection of complex assemblies. The only limiting …

Parenting In The Age Of Prozac: Parental Decision -Making In Social Context, Nena F. Stracuzzi Jan 2005

Parenting In The Age Of Prozac: Parental Decision -Making In Social Context, Nena F. Stracuzzi

Doctoral Dissertations

Within recent years, prescriptions written for children's emotional and behavioral problems have increased significantly. Although this issue has garnered a great deal of public notice, it has received scant sociological attention. In this study, I investigate parents of children with problems, and those without, in an effort to gain insights into the social contexts that shape decisions around diagnoses and treatment. The bases of the theoretical underpinnings of this research are situated at the intersection of medicalization and mother-blame.

Survey data were collected from 235 parents in a single New Hampshire community. Respondents answered several open-ended questions on the questionnaire …

Function, Expression And Evolution Of The *Src Family Kinases In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Chery Angel Whipple Jan 2005

Function, Expression And Evolution Of The *Src Family Kinases In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Chery Angel Whipple

Doctoral Dissertations

The vertebrate proto-oncogene, Src, is the prototype of a family of membrane-associated protein tyrosine kinases involved in cell signaling pathways that control cell growth, development, and differentiation. Activation of Src by mutation or overexpression has been implicated in a range of cancers, particularly breast and colon cancer. Inappropriate activation of Src has pronounced oncogenic effects on cell morphology, adhesion, and motility. Despite its implications in cancer, the normal biological role of Src is not well understood.

I used the nematode C. elegans to investigate the expression, function, and evolution of two src genes (src-1 and src-2) utilizing a combination of …

Sensing The Human Alpha Rhythm Using A Non-Contact Electroencephalographic (Eeg) Electrode, Wayne J. Smith Ii. Jan 2005

Sensing The Human Alpha Rhythm Using A Non-Contact Electroencephalographic (Eeg) Electrode, Wayne J. Smith Ii.

Doctoral Dissertations

The electroencephalogram is the recording of bioelectrical potentials on the scalp due to neural current sources in the brain and are typically recorded using wet surface electrodes that make ohmic contact with the scalp surface using an electrolyte gel. Unfortunately, wet electrodes are intrusive to the user, problematic for EEG studies requiring high spatial resolution, and are unsuitable for long-duration EEG recordings. Wet electrodes ultimately limit spatial resolution since the gel can short neighboring electrodes. They also do not meet long-duration recording demands since the gel can dry out over time.

This dissertation explores the feasibility of measuring the EEG …

Ultrashort, High-Power Pulse Generation From A Master Oscillator Power Amplifier Based On External Cavity Mode Locking Of A Quantum-Dot Two-Section Diode Laser, Myoung-Taek Choi, Wangkuen Lee, Ji-Myung Kim, Peter J. Delfyett

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We investigate an external cavity curved two-section mode-locked diode laser system based on quantum-dot (QD) gain media near 1.3 mu m. Pulses are generated from the external laser cavity at a 5-GHz repetition rate and amplified using a multilayer quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifier. The pulses are compressed with a dual-grating dispersion compensator. The shortest, near transform-limited pulses are obtained when the mode-locked pulses are positive (up) chirped. The compressed pulses are 1.2 ps in duration, with a pulse energy of 1.46 pJ, implying a peak power of 1.22 W.

X-Waves In Nonlinear Normally Dispersive Waveguide Arrays, Sotiris Droulias, Kyriakos Hizanidis, Joachin Meier, Demetrios N. Christodoulides Jan 2005

X-Waves In Nonlinear Normally Dispersive Waveguide Arrays, Sotiris Droulias, Kyriakos Hizanidis, Joachin Meier, Demetrios N. Christodoulides

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We theoretically demonstrate that optical discrete X-waves are possible in normally dispersive nonlinear waveguide arrays. We show that such X-waves can be effectively excited for a wide range of initial conditions and in certain occasions can be generated in cascade. The possibility of observing this family of waves in AlGaAs array systems is investigated in terms of pertinent examples.

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

The post-translational farnesylation of proteins serves to anchor a subset of intracellular proteins to membranes in eukaryotic organisms and also promotes protein-protein interactions. Inhibition of protein farnesyltransferase (PFT) is lethal to the pathogenic protozoa Plasmodium falciparum. Parasites were isolated that were resistant to BMS-388891, a tetrahydroquinoline (THQ) PFT inhibitor. Resistance was associated with a 12-fold decrease in drug susceptibility. Genotypic analysis revealed a single point mutation in the beta subunit in resistant parasites. The resultant tyrosine 837 to cysteine alteration in the beta subunit corresponded to the binding site for the THQ and peptide substrate. Biochemical analysis of Y837C-PFT demonstrated …

Methodology For The Iterative Evaluation Of Prototype Headmounted Displays In Virtual Environments: Visual Acuity Metrics, Cali Fidoplastis, Christopher Fuhrman, Catherine Meyer, Jannick Rolland

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Head-mounted display design is an iterative process. As such, a standardized user-centered assessment protocol of head-mounted performance during each phase of prototype development should be employed. In this paper, we first describe a methodology for assessing prototype head-mounted displays and virtual environments using visual performance metrics. We then present an application of the methodology using a prototype of a projection head-mounted display and the first module of our assessment: resolution visual acuity as a function of contrast. To evaluate the total system, we also used three different light levels and two different types of projection materials. Results from both studies …

Spatial Photonics In Nonlinear Waveguide Arrays, Jason W. Fleischer, Guy Bartal, Oren Cohen, Tal Schwartz, Ofer Manela, Barak Freedman, Mordechai Segev, Hrvoje Buljan, Nikolaos K. Efremidis

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

The recent proposal of optical induction for producing nonlinear photonic lattices has revolutionized the study of nonlinear waves in waveguide arrays. In particular, it enabled the first observation of (2+1) dimensional lattice solitons, which were the first 2D solitons observed in any nonlinear periodic system in nature. Since then, progress has been rapid, with many fundamental discoveries made within the past two years. Here, we review our theoretical and experimental contributions to this effort.

Characterization Of Digital-Micromirror Device-Based Infrared Scene Projector, William R. Folks, José Manuel López-Alonso, Brian Monacelli, Arthur Weeks, Guy Zummo, Daniel Mullally, Glenn D. Boreman

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

A test procedure is developed for an infrared laser scene projector, and applied to a projection system that we develop based on digital micromirror technology. The intended use will be for simulation and target training. Resolution and noise are significant parameters for target perception models of infrared imaging systems. System resolution is normally measured as the modulation transfer function (MTF), and its noise modeled through an appropriate signal standard deviation metric. We compare MTF measurements for both mid-wave (MWIR) and longwave IR (LWIR) bands for an infrared laser scene projector based on the digital micromirror device (DMD). Moreover, we use …

Why The Village Is So Hard To Find: Challenging Ourselves, Transforming Our Helping Systems, Roger Friedman Jan 2005

Why The Village Is So Hard To Find: Challenging Ourselves, Transforming Our Helping Systems, Roger Friedman

Journal of Family Strengths

Keynote address presented by Roger Friedman, PhD, LCSW at the Family Preservation Institute Annual Conference, San Antonio, Texas, September 9, 2004.

Looking at Language and Concepts

Looking closely at certain language that we use helps us understand how we think about our work and our world—and ultimately, it helps us understand ourselves better. The term "village " as used in the title of the paper and in many of our professional conversations is worthy of such an inquiry

Iran, Syd Dillard Jan 2005

Iran, Syd Dillard

Human Rights & Human Welfare

The West has been conditioned to perceive Iran as hostile, suspect, and promoting terrorism. The conventional wisdom is that Iran is not an “open society”, but one where dissent is repressed. However, the literature, as in the quote above, paints a picture of diverse peoples and political thought. Yet diversity in popular attitudes does not preclude Iran from a troubling human rights record. The more reformers demand and speak out, the more repressive the regime becomes. In defense of these activities, Iran appeals to cultural and religious tradition. Outside its borders, Iran has also been either a sponsor or supporter …
