The Effect Of Age And Diet On Immune Function In Felines, Lindsay Fitz Hendey Jan 2005

The Effect Of Age And Diet On Immune Function In Felines, Lindsay Fitz Hendey

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Aging is associated with several physiological changes. An important physiological change seen in aging is a shift in the balance between oxidants and antioxidants, in which increased oxidants, or free radicals, seen with aging lead to increased cellular damage, also called oxidative stress. Immune function of elderly individuals seems to be significantly impacted through a decline of immunologic function as well as dysregulation of inflammatory and specific immune responses. Oxidative stress and the accumulation of free radicals have been implicated in the decline of immune function seen in the aged. Antioxidants, both intracellular and exogenous, counteract free radical damage to …

Watch What You're Watching Together: The Complicated Relationship Between Family Coviewing And Family Functioning, Kymberly Booth Higgs Jan 2005

Watch What You're Watching Together: The Complicated Relationship Between Family Coviewing And Family Functioning, Kymberly Booth Higgs

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This quantitative study examines a potential relationship between viewing television together as a family and family functioning. About 150 families from California, Missouri and Ohio were asked to report the amount of time they spent viewing television together (coviewing) as well as the specific programs they were likely to view as a family. The families also completed the self-report McMaster Family Assessment Device, which measures five dimensions of family functioning (communication, roles, affective involvement, behavior control and overall general functioning). Statistical analysis revealed inverse relationships between the amount of time spent coviewing and family communication, affective involvement (i.e., cohesion) and …

Examining Collaboration In The Classroom Through The Use Of Weblogs, Adam Michael Gutschmidt Jan 2005

Examining Collaboration In The Classroom Through The Use Of Weblogs, Adam Michael Gutschmidt

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the potential utility of weblogs within the classroom environment. The specific questions of interest surrounding use of weblogs in group projects included (1) influencing students’ anxiety related to group work, (2) assisting groups in meeting their expectations and achieving success, and (3) understanding how students perceived the weblog as a communicative tool within a small group context. Ninety undergraduate students attending a private Midwestern university participated in the study. All participants were enrolled in one of the multiple sections of the communication module course, Group Decision Making. Participants completed both a …

Battlefields, Tools, And Targets: Archives And Armed Conflict, Patricia A. Nugent Jan 2005

Battlefields, Tools, And Targets: Archives And Armed Conflict, Patricia A. Nugent

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Kenneth Foote notes in his seminal book on memorials Shadowed Ground that, "Every society in every period has borne witness to war, disaster, violence and tragedy." The universal nature of conflict is, of course, well known, so it is perhaps not surprising that, as with many other institutions of society, archives have been impacted by human violence and destruction. Indeed, the birth of the archival profession is often closely associated with one of the most important wars in history-the French Revolution of 1789. In the aftermath of the revolution, the new French government sought to make the records of the …

Relative Permeability Of The Bluejacket Formation, Tanner Womack Jan 2005

Relative Permeability Of The Bluejacket Formation, Tanner Womack

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Estimations of oil recovery from secondary or tertiary recovery processes require information about the flow characteristics of oil and other fluids present in the reservoir. When multiple fluids are present in the reservoir, they affect the flow of each other through the system. Relative permeability is a measurement of the flowing ability of a fluid in the presence of another fluid in a porous system.

Relative permeability curves have been generated for the Bluejacket sandstone reservoir located in Vernon County, Missouri. The relative permeability curves are based on core samples taken from the area.

Exploring The Half-Life Of Internet Footnotes, Michael Bugeja, Daniela V. Dimitrova Jan 2005

Exploring The Half-Life Of Internet Footnotes, Michael Bugeja, Daniela V. Dimitrova

Iowa Journal of Communication

Vanishing online references are becoming a problem for scholars. This exploratory study examines use of online citations, focusing on 2003 AEJMC conference papers accepted by the Communication Technology and Policy division. Authors analyze papers using URL reference addresses in bibliographies and document some 40% of online citations being unavailable a year later. Results show that .edu is the most stable domain. Error messages for "dead" URL addresses also are explored. Finally authors offer much needed recommendations for researchers who use Internet citations.

Unique And Ordinary Problems In Internet Research: Research Ethics, The Law, And Power Politics In Institutional Review, Mark D. Johns Jan 2005

Unique And Ordinary Problems In Internet Research: Research Ethics, The Law, And Power Politics In Institutional Review, Mark D. Johns

Iowa Journal of Communication

While some regard Internet as public texts, much of interest to researchers is actually human social interaction, subject to institutional review. The law leaves much to the discretion of institutional review boards (IRBs). Reviews are influenced by concerns for protecting institutions from liability, negative publicity, or scrutiny from funding sources. This creates an "atmosphere of apprehension" for IRBs, and challenges Internet researchers, because their work demands innovative methods in a field unfamiliar to most IRBs. This paper is intended to offer both cautions to those anticipating internet research, as well as advice on dealing with the IRB.

"Has The Millennium Yet Dawned?": A History Of Attitudes Toward Pregnant Workers In America, Courtni E. Molnar Jan 2005

"Has The Millennium Yet Dawned?": A History Of Attitudes Toward Pregnant Workers In America, Courtni E. Molnar

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This Article will focus on what might be considered the "prehistory" of the PDA in an attempt to shed new light on the equality/difference debate. Beginning as early as the nineteenth century, pregnant workers have been forced into either the equality approach or the difference approach depending mostly on race and class. This Article will show that, at times, both approaches restrained the autonomy of women and even caused harm to individual women and society by contributing to the development of the stereotypes and social attitudes that continue to permit pregnancy discrimination today.

Liberty, Equality And Deference: A Comment On Colin Feasby’S “Freedom Of Expression And The Law Of The Democratic Process”, Christopher D. Bredt, Laura Pottie Jan 2005

Liberty, Equality And Deference: A Comment On Colin Feasby’S “Freedom Of Expression And The Law Of The Democratic Process”, Christopher D. Bredt, Laura Pottie

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This paper discusses Colin Feasby’s paper “Freedom of Expression and the Democratic Process” on the Harper decision and recognizes his previous scholarship on this topic as making a significant and valuable contribution to our understanding of judicial review of the democratic process. Bredt and Pottie recognize that the egalitarian model cannot fully address the variety of participants and resources at play. They believe that judicial deference is unwarranted and indeed hazardous in this context. Experience has shown that a high level of third party campaign spending does not trigger the hypothetical evils associated with independent expenditures, nor is it outcome …

B2b E-Marketplaces In The Airline Industry: Process Drivers And Performance Indicators, Claudia-Maria Wagner, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth Jan 2005

B2b E-Marketplaces In The Airline Industry: Process Drivers And Performance Indicators, Claudia-Maria Wagner, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth

Articles

Competitive pressures are increasing within and between different strategically oriented groups of airlines. This paper focuses on the level of efficiency improvements gained by using e-Marketplaces in the procurement process. Findings from a survey among 88 international airlines reveal that the use of Business-to-Business (B2B) e-Marketplaces does play different roles across the various airline groupings. Airlines that are involved in strategic alliances show higher joint procurement activities than airlines that are not involved in strategic alliances. However, alliances are probably viewed as loose arrangements and thus airlines may be reluctant to share information on procurement prices and processes with another …

Programming For Hiv Prevention In South African Schools: A Report On Program Implementation, Priscilla Reddy, Shegs James, Ann P. Mccauley

HIV and AIDS

An evaluation study conducted in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, provides important insights into whether learners who participated in a fact-based, interactive course had more knowledge about HIV risks, prevention, and care practices; more positive attitudes toward prevention practices and people living with HIV and AIDS; and a higher prevalence of reported safe behaviors than comparable learners who did not participate in the course. Results show that the Life Skills Grade 9 Curriculum had a positive impact of students’ knowledge of HIV/AIDS, attitudes about abstinence, and intention to use condoms. There was, however, no evidence of increased adoption of such protective …

The Disintegration Of Modern Culture. Nietzsche And The Information Age, Edgar Landgraf Jan 2005

The Disintegration Of Modern Culture. Nietzsche And The Information Age, Edgar Landgraf

German Faculty Publications

The article revisits Nietzsche’s provocative claim that the Enlightenment’s emphasis on education and open exchange of information promotes rather than prevents the “loss of meaning” from a media studies and systems theoretical perspective. Nietzsche in fact ties what he understands as modern culture’s disintegration to information-processing modes of modern society, that is, as effects of the modern educational system and the mass media (at his time, the printing press). The article argues that while Nietzsche is an astute observer of modernity, his call for a return to a more authentic culture (with its daunting political implications) is indicative of Nietzsche’s …
