Diagenesis Of Mudstones, Offshore Texas And Southwestern Louisiana, Maria Antonieta Pacheco Jan 2005

Diagenesis Of Mudstones, Offshore Texas And Southwestern Louisiana, Maria Antonieta Pacheco

LSU Master's Theses

Predicting the effects of mudstone diagenesis on reservoir quality is an important component of successful petroleum exploration and production programs. A regional study using chemical analyses from mudstone core cuttings and SP logs from 15 wells from the western Gulf of Mexico, including the Matagorda, Brazos, Mustang offshore areas, indicates that chemical changes with depth such as overall depletion of quartz and calcite; the illite-smectite conversion; and K2O enrichment occur in the mudstone Miocene interval of the study area. Mixing of depositional sources has been suggested to be the cause of similar chemical and mineralogical changes observed in Paleocene-Eocene and …

Optimization Of Ultraviolet Emission And Chemical Species Generation From A Pulsed Dielectric Barrier Discharge At Atmospheric Pressure, Xinpei Lu, Mounir Laroussi Jan 2005

Optimization Of Ultraviolet Emission And Chemical Species Generation From A Pulsed Dielectric Barrier Discharge At Atmospheric Pressure, Xinpei Lu, Mounir Laroussi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

One of the attractive features of nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasmas is the ability to achieve enhanced gas phase chemistry without the need for elevated gas temperatures. This attractive characteristic recently led to their extensive use in applications that require low temperatures, such as material processing and biomedical applications. The agents responsible for the efficient plasma reactivity are the ultraviolet (UV) photons and the chemically reactive species. In this paper, in order to optimize the UV radiation and reactive species generation efficiency, the plasma was generated by a dielectric barrier discharge driven by unipolar submicrosecond square pulses. To keep the discharge …

Nonlinear Optics And An Experimental Test Of Bell’S Inequality, Michael Herbst Jan 2005

Nonlinear Optics And An Experimental Test Of Bell’S Inequality, Michael Herbst

Honors Papers

The purpose of this investigation is to assemble an apparatus capable of testing Bell’s inequality for a local hidden variable. The historical context and theoretical developments that led to this area of inquiry are presented. Expected experimental results stemming from two distinct physical theories are introduced. Procedures are given that outline the assembly of a device capable of testing these theories. Analysis confirming the successful completion of a majority of the steps is presented, and the final necessary steps are detailed. Finally, a laboratory prompt for this experiment’s use in Oberlin College’s advanced laboratory class is given.

The Quantum Dynamics Of H2 In A C60 Lattice, Christie Simmons Jan 2005

The Quantum Dynamics Of H2 In A C60 Lattice, Christie Simmons

Honors Papers

Since its onset in 1941, matrix isolation has become a popular and common technique for studying species using spectroscopy by isolating them in an inert host solid [1]. Due to the large, spherical shape of the molecules, solid C60 has large interstitial voids making it a good host for matrix isolation. These voids come in two varieties. The larger of the two, the octahedral sites, have an ideal size for studying the dynamics of H2 molecules because the sites are large enough that a hydrogen molecule can be trapped, resulting in quantized translational motion, and can rotate nearly freely within …

Heuristic Optimization As A V&V Tool For Software Process Simulationmodels, Wayne Wakeland, Stephen Shervais, David Raffo Jan 2005

Heuristic Optimization As A V&V Tool For Software Process Simulationmodels, Wayne Wakeland, Stephen Shervais, David Raffo

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This work illustrates the use of heuristic algorithms to improve the verification and validation of software process simulation models. To use this approach, an optimization problem is formulated to guide a heuristic search algorithm that will attempt to locate particular combinations of parameter values that yield surprising results. These surprising results often help the modeler to identify flaws in the model logic that would otherwise remain undetected. The general concepts are discussed and a simple example is provided.

Chromian Spinel–Olivine Phase Chemistry And The Origin Of Primitive Basalts Of The Southern Washington Cascades, Diane R. Smith, W. P. Leeman Jan 2005

Chromian Spinel–Olivine Phase Chemistry And The Origin Of Primitive Basalts Of The Southern Washington Cascades, Diane R. Smith, W. P. Leeman

Earth and Environmental Geosciences Faculty Research

Geochemically diverse basalts occur in an ~160-km-wide transect that stretches across the Quaternary southern Washington Cascades (SWC) volcanic arc. Two fundamental groups of SWC basalts can be identified on the basis of major and trace element chemistry. On primitive mantle-normalized “spidergrams”, Group I lavas resemble within-plate basalts, whereas Group II lavas exhibit chemical characteristics (e.g., Nb, Ta, and Ti depletions) typical of subduction-related magmas. The primitive nature of many SWC basalts is indicated by their high MgO (>6.5 wt.%, up to 9.5 wt.%), Ni (>85 ppm) and Cr (>180 ppm) contents. Electron microprobe analyses of olivine–spinel pairs …

On Cographic Matroids And Signed-Graphic Matroids, Dan Slilaty Jan 2005

On Cographic Matroids And Signed-Graphic Matroids, Dan Slilaty

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We prove that a connected cographic matroid of a graph G is the bias matroid of a signed graph Σ iff G imbeds in the projective plane. In the case that G is nonplanar, we also show that Σ must be the projective-planar dual signed graph of an actual imbedding of G in the projective plane. As a corollary we get that, if G1, . . . , G29 denote the 29 nonseparable forbidden minors for projective-planar graphs, then the cographic matroids of G1, . . . , G29 are among the forbidden minors for the class of bias matroids …

Cyclic Difference Covers, K. T. Arasu, Surinder Sehgal Jan 2005

Cyclic Difference Covers, K. T. Arasu, Surinder Sehgal

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

his paper studies cyclic difference covers in finite cyclic groups and develops several constructions and existence results for these combinatorial structures. The authors investigate conditions under which cyclic difference covers exist, derive new infinite families, and analyze connections with related objects such as difference sets and covering designs. Applications to combinatorial design theory and coding-related constructions are also discussed.

Bedrock Geology Of Rogers Quadrangle, Benton County, Arkansas, Jon C. Dowell, Camille M. Hutchinson, Stephen K. Boss

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A digital geologic map of Rogers quadrangle was produced at 1:24,000 scale using the geographic information system (GIS) software Maplnfo. Data regarding stratigraphic relations observed in the field were digitized onto the United States Geological Survey (USGS) digital raster graphic (DRG) of Rogers quadrangle. The geology of Rogers quadrangle consists of sedimentary rocks of the Ordovician, Devonian, and Mississippian systems. The Cotter, Powell, and Everton formations represent the Ordovician System. The Clifty and Chattanooga formations represent the Devonian System. The St.Joe and Boone formations represent the Mississippian System. This mapping effort represents the first time stratigraphy of Rogers quadrangle was …

Sediment Loading And Water Quality Of Field Run-Off Water, J. S. Mcconnell, J. D. Mattice, B. W. Skulman, C. K. Bryant, M. Mozaffari

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Intensive tillage is commonly employed in many agronomic production systems in the United States. Tillage operations may include disking the field, re-smoothing the soil, seedbed formation, reducing the seedbeds, and shallow cultivation for weed control. Tillage practices in conjunction with rainfall have been linked to soil erosion, which may adversely affect the environment. The soil erosion dynamics of two large-scale production cotton fields that utilized both modern-conventional and conservation-tillage technology were examined. Studies were conducted in the cotton-producing region of southeast Arkansas in the Bayou Bartholomew watershed. Bayou Bartholomew is currently listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as …

Monsoon-Driven Biogeochemical Processes In The Arabian Sea, Jerry D. Wiggert, Raleigh Hood, Karl Banse, John Kindle Jan 2005

Monsoon-Driven Biogeochemical Processes In The Arabian Sea, Jerry D. Wiggert, Raleigh Hood, Karl Banse, John Kindle

Faculty Publications

Although it is nominally a tropical locale, the semiannual wind reversals associated with the Monsoon system of the Arabian Sea result annually in two distinct periods of elevated biological activity. While in both cases monsoonal forcing drives surface layer nutrient enrichment that supports increased rates of primary productivity, fundamentally different entrainment mechanisms are operating in summer (Southwest) and winter (Northeast) Monsoons. Moreover, the intervening intermonsoon periods, during which the region relaxes toward oligotrophic conditions more typical of tropical environments, provide a stark contrast to the dynamic biogeochemical activity of the monsoons. The resulting spatial and temporal variability is great and …

Novel Cyanine-Amp Conjugates For Efficient 5' Rna Fluorescent Labeling By One-Step Transcription And Replacement Of [γ-32P] Atp In Rna Structural Investigation, Na Li, Changjun Yu, Faqing Huang

Faculty Publications

Two novel fluorescent cyanine-AMP conjugates, F550/570 and F650/670, have been synthesized to serve as transcription initiators under the T7 φ2.5 promoter. Efficient fluorophore labeling of 5′ RNA is achieved in a single transcription step by including F550/570 and F650/670 in the transcription solution. The current work makes fluorescently labeled RNA readily available for broad applications in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology and biomedicine. In particular, site-specifically fluorophore-labeled large RNAs prepared by the current method may be used to investigate RNA structure, folding and mechanism by various fluorescence techniques. In addition, F550/570 and F650/670 may replace [γ-32P]ATP to prepare …

Curium lies at the center of the actinide series and has a half-filled shell with seven 5f electrons spatially residing inside its radon core. As a function of pressure, curium exhibits five different crystallographic phases up to 100 gigapascals, of which all but one are also found in the preceding element, americium. We describe here a structure in curium, Cm III, with monoclinic symmetry, space group C2/c, found at intermediate pressures (between 37 and 56 gigapascals). Ab initio electronic structure calculations agree with the observed sequence of structures and establish that it is the spin polarization of curium’s 5f electrons …

The structural and electronic properties of Gd2(Ti1−yZry)2O7 (y=0–1) pyrochlores following a 2.0-MeV Au2+ ion-beam irradiation (~5.0 X 1014 Au2+/cm2) have been investigated by Ti 2p and O 1s near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS). The irradiation of Gd2(Ti1−yZry)2O7 leads to the phase transformation from the ordered pyrochlore structure (Fd3m) to the defect fluorite structure (Fm3m) regardless of Zr concentration. Irradiated Gd2(Ti1−y …
