Clues From Darwin, Morgan Bida Jan 2005

Clues From Darwin, Morgan Bida

Student Work

How shall we view our existence when we accept the realization that mankind is not the most important part of the universe? Will the wars that plague us, or the political hierarchies that control us, hold as much significance as they do now? For more than a thousand years, man has had the inkling that perhaps a greater force exists in the universe beside us. By about 520 BC, humans began observing that living organisms changed through the generations to become more suitably adapted to their environment; thus was spawned the idea of evolution. Early theories arose to describe this …

Cross Section Of The Upper Elkhorn Coal Zone Between The Varney And Lick Creek Quadrangles, Bradford L. Luckett

Map and Chart--KGS

This cross section shows lithic variation and coal-bed correlations for the interval between the Upper Elkhorn No. 1 and the Upper Elkhorn No. 3 ½ coals from southern Martin County to central Pike County. It is one of a series being made to document the characteristics of the Upper Elkhorn coal zone in eastern Kentucky. The data are derived from the KGS coal borehole database, which contains records of exploration core holes supplied by coal companies. Lines on the diagram show general bed correlations and indicate places where mineable coal beds split into two or more thinner benches. The vertical …

Participatory Routing Of Electric Power Transmission Lines Using The Ep-Amis Gis/Multicriteria Evaluation Methodology, Keiron Bailey, Ted H. Grossardt, Ward Jewell Jan 2005

Participatory Routing Of Electric Power Transmission Lines Using The Ep-Amis Gis/Multicriteria Evaluation Methodology, Keiron Bailey, Ted H. Grossardt, Ward Jewell

Kentucky Transportation Center Faculty and Researcher Publications

The North American electric transmission network was developed under the guidance of the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) to enhance the reliability of electricity supply. The network also allows sale and marketing of electric power by one utility to another. Electricity marketing has taken on a much more prominent role with restructuring of the electric utility industry. As a result, long-distance sales of electric power have greatly increased the loading of some transmission lines, and have led to congestion on the transmission network. Recent system failures such as the northeast blackout of 2003 have highlighted the need for increased …

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Mercury, Bart Davidson, R. Stephen Fisher Jan 2005

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Mercury, Bart Davidson, R. Stephen Fisher

Information Circular--KGS

Mercury is a naturally occurring metal that occurs in trace amounts in water, soils, and rocks. Elemental mercury is a liquid that occurs in some ore deposits; it may also be concentrated around hot springs. Currently, about 50 percent of mercury use is for electrical products such as dry-cell batteries, fluorescent lights, switches, and other control equipment. Mercury is also used in the electrolytic preparation of chlorine gas and caustic soda, and in paint manufacture and pesticide production (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2002). In the past, significant amounts of mercury were used in thermometers and pressure gauges.

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Selenium, Bart Davidson, R. Stephen Fisher

Information Circular--KGS

Selenium is a naturally occurring element found in most rocks and soils (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, 2003). In its solid form, selenium is black, gray, or red and is odorless (New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, 2002). Most selenium is obtained from byproducts of the copper refining industry. Selenium compounds are often used in electronic components, photocopiers, metal alloys, rubber, paint pigments, glass-making (ruby red glass), and photographic emulsions (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2003). Selenium exhibits both photovoltaic and photoconductive properties. As more light shines on selenium, its electrical conductivity increases, making it extremely useful …

Lithostratigraphy Of Precambrian And Paleozoic Rocks Along Structural Cross Section Ky-1, Crittenden County To Lincoln County, Kentucky, Martin C. Noger, James A. Drahovzal

Report of Investigations--KGS

This east–west cross section across western Kentucky is one of a network of regional cross sections prepared by the Illinois Basin Consortium that illustrate the structural and stratigraphic framework of the Illinois Basin. The structural cross section uses wireline logs of deep tests, as well as proprietary reflection seismic data, to show the relationship of Paleozoic rocks to each other from the surface to the top of the Precambrian unconformity.

The line of the cross section extends east from the complexly faulted Western Kentucky Fluorspar District across the Moorman Syncline and the underlying Rough Creek Graben to the Cincinnati Arch …

Active Facilitation: What Do Specialists Need To Know And How Might They Learn It?, D. Schifter, J. B. Lester

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Sustained, innovative professional development is now widely acknowledged as essential to the improvement of mathematics instruction in the nation’s schools. In recent years, this recognition has prompted the production of a variety of materials designed to support new teacher development programs. However, with the availability of such materials, serious concerns arise as to the kinds of knowledge required of professional development providers, often teachers who have been assigned Mathematics Specialist roles, and the means by which this knowledge is to be acquired. The authors of this paper address such questions in the context of one professional development seminar, Developing Mathematical …

Finite Characterizations And Paretian Preferences, Vicki Knoblauch Jan 2005

Finite Characterizations And Paretian Preferences, Vicki Knoblauch

Economics Working Papers

A characterization of a property of binary relations is of finite type if it is stated in terms of ordered T-tuples of alternatives for some positive integer T. A characterization of finite type can be used to determine in polynomial time whether a binary relation over a finite set has the property characterized. Unfortunately, Pareto representability in R2 has no characterization of finite type (Knoblauch, 2002). This result is generalized below Rl, l larger than 2. The method of proof is applied to other properties of binary relations.

The Closely Held Business Through The Entity-Aggregate Prism, Daniel S. Kleinberger Jan 2005

The Closely Held Business Through The Entity-Aggregate Prism, Daniel S. Kleinberger

Faculty Scholarship

When the law conceptualizes the legal form that houses a closely held business, does it matter whether the law envisages that form as an entity separate from, rather than an aggregate of, the several owners of the business? At one time, this question was at the conceptual core of the law of general partnerships, but the Revised Uniform Partnership Act supposedly put the issue to rest. Moreover, the closely held corporation is emphatically an entity, as is the predominant form of unincorporated organization - the limited liability company. Today, the entity-aggregate question might seem a mere relic of a discarded …
