A New Topological Degree Theory For Densely Defined Quasibounded (S˜+)-Perturbations Of Multivalued Maximal Monotone Operators In Reflexive Banach Spaces, Athanassios G. Kartsatos, Igor V. Skrypnik Jan 2005

A New Topological Degree Theory For Densely Defined Quasibounded (S˜+)-Perturbations Of Multivalued Maximal Monotone Operators In Reflexive Banach Spaces, Athanassios G. Kartsatos, Igor V. Skrypnik

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Let X be an infinite-dimensional real reflexive Banach space with dual space X∗ and G⊂X open and bounded. Assume that X and X∗ are locally uniformly convex. Let T:X⊃D(T)→2X∗ be maximal monotone and C:X⊃D(C)→X∗ quasibounded and of type (S˜+). Assume that L⊂D(C), where L is a dense subspace of X, and 0∈T(0). A new topological degree theory is introduced for the sum T+C. Browder's degree theory has thus been extended to densely defined perturbations of maximal monotone operators while results of Browder and Hess have been extended to various classes of single-valued densely defined generalized pseudomonotone perturbations C. Although the …

Theoretical Investigation Of The Duration Of Karstic Denudation On Bare, Sloping Limestone Surface, Gábor Szunyogh Jan 2005

Theoretical Investigation Of The Duration Of Karstic Denudation On Bare, Sloping Limestone Surface, Gábor Szunyogh

KIP Articles

This paper deals with the question of how the duration of karstic denudation depends on the dip angle, the annual amount of precipitation, the rain intensity, and the prevailing wind direction and speed in case of an initially plane, sloping limestone surface without soil cover. The answer is given by the solution of a differential equation system describing the lowering speed of the rock surface. It turns out that the rate of the denudation does not increase in proportion to the intensity of precipitation and that it can never exceed a maximal value. Furthermore, long, soft rains result in higher …

Potential Energy Surface Of The Reaction Of Imidazole With Peroxynitrite: Density Functional Theory Study, Valentin Gogonea Jan 2005

Potential Energy Surface Of The Reaction Of Imidazole With Peroxynitrite: Density Functional Theory Study, Valentin Gogonea

Chemistry Faculty Publications

This article presents a theoretical investigation of the reaction mechanism of imidazole nitration by peroxynitrite using density functional theory calculations. Understanding this reaction mechanism will help in elucidating the mechanism of guanine nitration by peroxynitrite, which is one of the assumed chemical pathways for damaging DNA in cells. This work focuses on the analysis of the potential energy surface (PES) for this reaction in the gas phase. Calculations were carried out using Hartree–Fock (HF) and density functional theory (DFT) Hamiltonians with double-zeta basis sets ranging from 6-31G(d) to 6-31++G(d,p), and the triple-zeta basis set 6-311G(d). The computational results reveal that …

Thinking Like A Lawyer, Peggy C. Davis, Aderson Belgard Francois Jan 2005

Thinking Like A Lawyer, Peggy C. Davis, Aderson Belgard Francois

Faculty Articles

In this article the authors explain what it means to train lawyers for intellectual versatility. The authors then describe, and attempt to explain, the resistance this kind of training can engender. Next, they draw on post-realist legal thought to explain why training for intellectual versatility is necessary to capable and responsible legal practice. The authors conclude with suggestions about how continued engagement with the work of Carol Gilligan can deepen their analysis of why training for intellectual versatility is resisted, and why it is nonetheless profoundly important.

Simulations Of Nanopore Formation And Phosphatidylserine Externalization In Lipid Membranes Subjected To A High-Intensity, Ultrashort Electric Pulse, Q. Hu, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach Jan 2005

Simulations Of Nanopore Formation And Phosphatidylserine Externalization In Lipid Membranes Subjected To A High-Intensity, Ultrashort Electric Pulse, Q. Hu, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

A combined MD simulator and time dependent Laplace solver are used to analyze the electrically driven phosphatidylserine externalization process in cells. Time dependent details of nanopore formation at cell membranes in response to a high-intensity (100kV∕cm), ultrashort (10ns) electric pulse are also probed. Our results show that nanosized pores could typically be formed within about 5ns. These predictions are in very good agreement with recent experimental data. It is also demonstrated that defect formation and PS externalization in membranes should begin on the anode side. Finally, the simulations confirm that PS externalization is a nanopore facilitated event, rather than the …

Against Prediction: Sentencing, Policing, And Punishing In An Actuarial Age, Bernard E. Harcourt Jan 2005

Against Prediction: Sentencing, Policing, And Punishing In An Actuarial Age, Bernard E. Harcourt

Faculty Scholarship

Actuarial methods – i.e., the use of statistical rather than clinical methods on large datasets of criminal offending rates to determine different levels of offending associated with one or more group traits, in order to (1) predict past, present or future criminal behavior and (2) administer a criminal justice outcome – now permeates the criminal law and its enforcement. With the single exception of racial profiling against African-Americans and Hispanics, most people view the turn to the actuarial as efficient, rational, and wealth-maximizing. The fact is, law enforcement agencies can detect more crime with the same resources if they investigate …

Infrared Response Of Charge-Coupled Devices, Matthias Loch, Ralf Widenhorn, Erik Bodegom Jan 2005

Infrared Response Of Charge-Coupled Devices, Matthias Loch, Ralf Widenhorn, Erik Bodegom

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

With a band gap of silicon of 1.1eV, the largest wavelength that can excite electrons from the valence to the conduction band is roughly 1100nm. As a consequence, in, for instance, a charge-coupled device, the quantum efficiency (QE) for wavelengths larger than 1100nm is assumed to be zero. We found that there is a response at those longer wavelengths and that the response decreases with increasing wavelength. The QE increases with increasing chip temperature which suggests a thermally activated process. Impurities in the silicon provide the energy levels in the band gap, from which electrons can be excited either thermally …

Classroom Interpreting And Visual Information Processing In Mainstream Education For Deaf Students: Live Or Memorex?, Marc Marschark, Jeff Pelz, Carol Convertino, Patricia Sapere, Mary Ellen Arndt, Rosemarie Seewagen Jan 2005

Classroom Interpreting And Visual Information Processing In Mainstream Education For Deaf Students: Live Or Memorex?, Marc Marschark, Jeff Pelz, Carol Convertino, Patricia Sapere, Mary Ellen Arndt, Rosemarie Seewagen

Articles

This study examined visual information processing and learning in classrooms including both deaf and hearing students. Of particular interest were the effects on deaf students’ learning of live (threedimensional) versus video-recorded (two-dimensional) sign language interpreting and the visual attention strategies of more and less experienced deaf signers exposed to simultaneous, multiple sources of visual information. Results from three experiments consistently indicated no differences in learning between three-dimensional and two-dimensional presentations among hearing or deaf students. Analyses of students’ allocation of visual attention and the influence of various demographic and experimental variables suggested considerable flexibility in deaf students’ receptive communication skills. …

Takeovers In The Boardroom: Burke Versus Schumpeter, Ronald J. Gilson, Reinier Kraakman Jan 2005

Takeovers In The Boardroom: Burke Versus Schumpeter, Ronald J. Gilson, Reinier Kraakman

Faculty Scholarship

We are delighted to participate in a 25th anniversary assessment of Martin Lipton's 1979 article, Takeover Bids in the Target's Boardroom. This is a remarkably prescient article that demonstrates an uncanny ear for an emerging issue. From his vantage point inside targets' boardrooms – and, we assume, also from inside the nearby offices of investment bankers – Lipton spotted a gathering storm on the horizon and sought to channel the emerging issue of takeover policy in a direction that accorded with his own fundamental convictions as well as the interests of his clients. As every academic knows, early intervention …

Setting Fires To Stem Cell Research, Roxanne Greitz Miller Jan 2005

Setting Fires To Stem Cell Research, Roxanne Greitz Miller

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The goal of this lesson is to present the basic scientific knowledge about stem cells, the promise of stem cell research to medicine, and the ethical considerations and arguments involved. One of the challenges of discussing stem cell research is that the field is constantly evolving and the most current information changes almost daily. Few science texts contain stem cell information, and those that do are generally written at a reading level above that of a typical middle grade student. In the lesson, students are introduced to the FIRES strategy and given an opportunity to evaluate stem cell information from …

The Unique Benefits Of Treating Personal Goodwill As Property In Corporate Acquisitions, Darian M. Ibrahim Jan 2005

The Unique Benefits Of Treating Personal Goodwill As Property In Corporate Acquisitions, Darian M. Ibrahim

Faculty Publications

Corporate acquisition talks may not get far if buyer and seller disagree over transaction structure, which can have significant after-tax effects. But the parties may have overlooked an item that, due to its potential tax treatment, could be the key to facilitating the acquisition. That item is the selling shareholder's "personal goodwill."

Personal goodwill exists when the shareholder's reputation, expertise, or contacts gives the corporation its intrinsic value. It is most likely to be found in closely held businesses, especially those that are technical, specialized, orprofessional in nature or have few customers and suppliers. If personal goodwill is treated as …

Spatial Distribution Of Land Type In Regression Models Of Pollutant Loading Jan 2005

Spatial Distribution Of Land Type In Regression Models Of Pollutant Loading

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

This paper proposes a method to improve landscape-pollution interaction regression models through the inclusion of a variable that describes the spatial distribution of a land type with respect to the pattern of runoff within a drainage catchment. The proposed index is used as an independent variable to enhance the strength, as quantified by R2 values, of regression relationships between empirical observations of in-stream pollutant concentrations and land type by considering the spatial distribution of key land-type categories within the sample point’s drainage area. We present an index that adds a new dimension of explanatory power when used in conjunction …
