Measurement Of Soil Respiration In Situ: Chamber Techniques, Philippe Rochette, Gordon L. Hutchinson Jan 2005

Measurement Of Soil Respiration In Situ: Chamber Techniques, Philippe Rochette, Gordon L. Hutchinson

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Soil respiration is commonly estimated as the flux of CO2 emitted from the soil surface (Fc). It represents the sum of CO2 produced by root respiration and by heterotrophic decomposition of root exudates, soil organic matter, and plant litter. The influence of CO2 fixation by autotrophic soil microorganisms, as well as nonbiological reactions such as the chemical oxidation of organic molecules and the precipitation or dissolution of soil carbonates, is small in most situations (Suarez, 1999). Root respiration is largely regulated by the root biomass and the rate of photosynthate transfer from plant leaves and …

Aerodynamic Methods For Estimating Turbulent Fluxes, John H. Prueger, William P. Kustas Jan 2005

Aerodynamic Methods For Estimating Turbulent Fluxes, John H. Prueger, William P. Kustas

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The exchange of energy and mass between a surface and the lowest region of the troposphere is a complex process that governs many hydrological, agricultural, and atmospheric processes. The layer of air directly affected by surface– atmosphere exchanges is strongly influenced by turbulent processes at the surface–atmosphere boundary and extends upward into the atmosphere to a height of approximately 1 km. This region is commonly referred to as the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) that is uniquely characterized by turbulence resulting from mechanical (wind shear) and buoyancy (thermal) forces at or near the surface. Methods have been developed to evaluate energy/mass …

Adult Dispersal Of Ostrinia Nubilalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) And Its Implications For Resistance Management In Bt-Maize, J. A. Qureshi, L. L. Buschman, James E. Throne, S. B. Ramaswamy

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Dispersal of European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner was examined by release and recapture of the dye marked adults and by capture of the feral adults in and around the large 50 ha center pivot irrigated fields of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) maize. Pheromone and black light traps were used to catch the adults. In 1999, 15 094 marked males and 7993 marked females were released, and in 2001, 13 942 marked males and 9977 marked females were released. In 1999, maximum mean recapture beyond the release point was 1.95 and 1.67% for males and females, but in 2001, the recapture …

Risk And Ethics In Biological Control, Ernest S. Delfosse Jan 2005

Risk And Ethics In Biological Control, Ernest S. Delfosse

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

All introduced natural enemies present a degree of risk to nontarget species. Since most biological control programs use relatively host-specific natural enemies, the risk to nontarget species is generally very low, particularly from biological control of weeds, which uses extensively tested and validated host-specificity testing procedures to predict risk. However, many of the published comments about risks of biological control are superficial or misleading, often inappropriately lumping risk from all taxa of agents as “the risk of biological control,” and ignore the potential benefits, rather than dealing with species-by-species risk and benefits. Particularly confounding accurate predictions is the common mixing …

Bounds On Element Order In Rings Z(M) With Divisors Of Zero, C. H. Cooke Jan 2005

Bounds On Element Order In Rings Z(M) With Divisors Of Zero, C. H. Cooke

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

If p is a prime, integer ring Zp has exactly ¢¢(p) generating elements ω, each of which has maximal index Ip(ω) = (p) = p − 1. But, if m = ΠRJ = 1pαJJ is composite, it is possible that Zm does not possess a generating element, and the maximal index of an element is not easily discernible. Here, it is determined when, in the absence of a generating element, one can still with confidence place bounds on the maximal index. Such a bound is usually less than ¢(m …

The Effect Of Colloidal Stability On The Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Nanosilica Dispersed Fluids, Manoj Venkataraman Jan 2005

The Effect Of Colloidal Stability On The Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Nanosilica Dispersed Fluids, Manoj Venkataraman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Addition of nano particles to cooling fluids has shown marked improvement in the heat transfer capabilities. Nanofluids, liquids that contain dispersed nanoparticles, are an emerging class of fluids that have great potential in many applications. There is a need to understand the fundamental behavior of nano dispersed particles with respect to their agglomeration characteristics and how it relates to the heat transfer capability. Such an understanding is important for the development and commercialization of nanofluids. In this work, the stability of nano particles was studied by measuring the zeta potential of colloidal particles, particle concentration and size. Two different sizes …

Solution Of Electromagnetic Scattering Parameters And Radiation Patterns Of Arbitrary Body Of Revolution Radiators, Wendell Brokaw Jan 2005

Solution Of Electromagnetic Scattering Parameters And Radiation Patterns Of Arbitrary Body Of Revolution Radiators, Wendell Brokaw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A novel full wave analysis method to determine the scattering parameters and the radiation field intensities of arbitrary Body of Revolution (BOR) radiators consisting of impenetrable media is explored through derived components of modal analysis and the method of moments (MoM). Modal excitation is utilized to excite the structural feed; allowing for a more accurate measure of the scattering parameters of the total structure as opposed to the use of external excitation sources. The derivation of the mode matching method introduces a novel approach to achieving a frequency independent coupling matrix that will reduce the computational requirements for iterations utilized …

Real-Time Realistic Rendering And High Dynamic Range Image Display And Compression, Ruifeng Xu Jan 2005

Real-Time Realistic Rendering And High Dynamic Range Image Display And Compression, Ruifeng Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the many issues that arise from the visual rendering problem. Of primary consideration is light transport simulation, which is known to be computationally expensive. Monte Carlo methods represent a simple and general class of algorithms often used for light transport computation. Unfortunately, the images resulting from Monte Carlo approaches generally suffer from visually unacceptable noise artifacts. The result of any light transport simulation is, by its very nature, an image of high dynamic range (HDR). This leads to the issues of the display of such images on conventional low dynamic range devices and the development of …

Gaining Interpretive Competence Through Cross-Cultural Dialogue Among Teachers And Researchers, Michelle Boone, Elaine Chan

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

We examined the complexities of developing and implementing school curricula that reflect the goals for equality for students outlined in the Canadian Multiculturalism Act. Stories of teaching and learning experiences were presented to teacher-researchers as a means of generating discussion about differences in perspective pertaining to the curricular needs of an ethnically diverse student population. We articulate this ongoing inquiry about how best to meet the needs of a diverse society in terms of enhancing a sense of ‘interpretive competence’ (Conle, 1997b, Conle et al., 2000, Conle, 2000).

On The Utility Of Stochastic Models Of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Rebecca Boehm Jan 2005

On The Utility Of Stochastic Models Of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Rebecca Boehm

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive and irreversible lung disease characterized by reduced lung function, abnormal inflammatory response, dyspnea, increased sputum production, and costly and debilitating exacerbations. Common treatments for COPD include smoking cessation therapy, short- and long-acting bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroids, pulmonary rehabilitation, and home oxygen therapy. However, a recent meta-analysis demonstrated that inhaled corticosteroids fail to slow the decline in FEV1, the primary clinical marker of COPD progression. In addition, some evidence exists to suggest that long-term inhaled corticosteroid use may increase bone density loss, leading to osteoporosis. Given that the bone health effects of inhaled corticosteroid …

Best Practices In Educator Preparation, Deborah Gober Jan 2005

Best Practices In Educator Preparation, Deborah Gober

Perspectives In Learning

One of the themes emphasized in the College of Education (COE) Conceptual Framework is excellence in teaching. As defined in the Conceptual Framework, excellence in teaching embodies the use of best practices which embody a variety of educational ideas and activities that lead to improved student learning. The phrase “best practice” is used frequently in fields such as medicine or law to describe reputable work based on current research and employing the latest knowledge, technology, and procedures in the field (Zemelman, Daniels, & Hyde, 1998). However, best practice in education has been somewhat difficult to define.
