Considerations When Designing In Vivo Protocols For Conducting Biomechanical Research Of The Shoulder Joint In Hockey Athletes, Kylie Giesler May 2026

Considerations When Designing In Vivo Protocols For Conducting Biomechanical Research Of The Shoulder Joint In Hockey Athletes, Kylie Giesler

Honors Program Theses

While the numbers and details of hockey-related injuries are variable across sources due to variations in sample age, sex, location, and confidentiality of many large hockey leagues, a 2023 narrative review study identified more than 100,000 upper extremity injuries documented in research since 2000. Nearly half of those injuries were to the shoulder with common injuries being acromioclavicular joint sprains, shoulder instability and dislocations, labral and rotator cuff tears, and clavicle fractures. In respect to the National Hockey League (NHL), the highest level of play in ice hockey, 12% of all injuries are to the shoulder, second only to head …

The Influence Of Composition On Porosity And Strength In Planetary Analog Saline Ices, Tara C. Tomlinson May 2026

The Influence Of Composition On Porosity And Strength In Planetary Analog Saline Ices, Tara C. Tomlinson

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

This thesis investigates how composition influences the physical structure and mechanical behavior of saline ice, with implications for both terrestrial sea ice and the ice shells of ocean worlds such as Europa and Enceladus. This is done through a multi-pronged approach of both numerical modeling and laboratory experiments. Modeling results re- veal that small-scale parameter variations in porosity, permeability, and permeability fac- tor may produce large discrepancies when extrapolated to planetary scales, underscoring the need for improved experimental constraints on pore connectivity and thermochemical conditions. Laboratory analyses show that while total porosity is relatively uniform with depth, it varies strongly …

Reward Representation Learning, Gregory M. Hyde May 2026

Reward Representation Learning, Gregory M. Hyde

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The \emph{Markov decision process} (MDP) has long served as the canonical model for sequential decision-making. However, it assumes that the reward function is Markov with respect to a given state representation---an assumption that often does not hold in practice. Instead, agents typically only perceive streams of observations and actions and must infer the latent structure according to which reward unfolds over time. From this perspective, reward prediction is initially non-Markov, reflecting a mismatch between the agent's current representation and the underlying structure of the environment.

In this thesis, we advance the view that reward is not simply a signal to …

Development Of A Novel Method For Simultaneously Testing Multiple Specimens To Evaluate Tension-Tension Fatigue Life, Mehedi Hasan Mahfuz May 2026

Development Of A Novel Method For Simultaneously Testing Multiple Specimens To Evaluate Tension-Tension Fatigue Life, Mehedi Hasan Mahfuz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The aim of this study is to develop a novel method for rapidly evaluating the tension–tension fatigue life of metals. Fatigue failure, which occurs when materials gradually weaken and fracture under repeated loading, is a critical concern in designing safe and reliable structures such as airplanes, cars, and bridges. Traditional fatigue testing methods are slow, costly, and typically limited to one specimen at a time. To address this, a high-throughput testing method was developed that allows multiple small-scale specimens to be tested simultaneously while following international testing standards. Using stainless steel sub-sized specimens scaled at 1:5 relative to the ASTM …

Leveraging The Iron Oxide Archive Of Mineralization, Deformation, And Exhumation Across Geologic Time, Jordan L. Jensen May 2026

Leveraging The Iron Oxide Archive Of Mineralization, Deformation, And Exhumation Across Geologic Time, Jordan L. Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The iron oxide mineral hematite commonly forms from groundwater near Earth’s surface and can preserve a history of fluid flow, fault slip, and landscape evolution. This record can be decoded using (U-Th)/He thermochronology, a dating method based on the temperature-sensitive ingrowth of helium from uranium and thorium decay. Because later heating and natural variation in hematite crystals can produce ambiguous (U-Th)/He results, I integrate dating with tools that reveal differences in hematite chemistry and textures. I apply these techniques to two distinct settings: ancient granitic rocks in Colorado and an active fault zone in the southern San Andreas fault (SSAF) …

Post-Quantum Cryptography Encryption Implementation For Messaging App, Callum S. Ward May 2026

Post-Quantum Cryptography Encryption Implementation For Messaging App, Callum S. Ward

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

This paper and complementary capstone project aim to explore the state of post-quantum cryptography today by defining the algorithms with which quantum computers can decipher modern asymmetric cryptographic algorithms in exponentially accelerated time, exploring national standards body NIST’s recommendations to circumvent these weaknesses with post-quantum solutions, and implementing recommended algorithms in my group’s project for the UNO Computer Science Capstone course, LockTalk. After having decided on ML-KEM for quantum-resistant asymmetric key transfer and AES-256 for symmetric message encryption and decryption, I was able to cryptographically encode messages to obscure their plaintext values from communication interceptions without any discernible increase in …

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

With the rapid development and use of digital communication, the need for maintaining the integrity and authenticity of transmitted information becomes more pressing than ever.  However, existing methods of data exchange have several flaws and drawbacks such as reliance on centralized networks which are subject to manipulation, modifications, and potential failures.  Thus, the current project offers an innovative approach to improving the integrity and detection capabilities of messages in real-time communication platforms using the power of blockchain technology.  The proposed solution uses the inherent features of blockchain-based systems to ensure secure and safe message transmission.

A Modal Analysis Of Human Dignity, Alexander S. Eberspacher May 2026

A Modal Analysis Of Human Dignity, Alexander S. Eberspacher

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

This work examines the history of the human rights tradition and philosophically compares it to the natural law tradition as most pre-eminently developed in Catholicism. It then turns to examine how Catholicism offers a philosophically sound base for universal dignity through the light of Saul Kripke’s modal work, while the Universal Declaration of Human Rights cannot account for such.

The Problem Child Of Defense: A Comprehensive Historical Analysis Of The Inherent Imbalances And Structural Contradictions That Have Plagued The United States Military Acquisitions System For Eighty Years, Shepherd E. Dollahon May 2026

The Problem Child Of Defense: A Comprehensive Historical Analysis Of The Inherent Imbalances And Structural Contradictions That Have Plagued The United States Military Acquisitions System For Eighty Years, Shepherd E. Dollahon

Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the structural contradictions and systemic failures that have defined the United States defense acquisitions system across eight decades of reform. Beginning with the creation of the Department of Defense in 1947 and proceeding through the Hegseth-era reforms of 2025, this analysis traces the cyclical pattern by which each successive administration identified procurement dysfunction, issued legislative remedies, and declared progress — only to produce new failures while leaving the underlying pathologies intact.

The central argument is that the defense acquisitions system has never suffered primarily from mismanagement or insufficient oversight, but from a structurally embedded incentive architecture that …

"Naija First Aid Al" - A Voice-Activated First Aid Assistant In Local Nigerian Languages, Esther Blessing Onoruke May 2026

"Naija First Aid Al" - A Voice-Activated First Aid Assistant In Local Nigerian Languages, Esther Blessing Onoruke

Master of Fine Arts in Digital Media Culminating Experience

There are now major structural obstacles preventing Nigerian households from receiving emergency care right away. Manageable domestic events can turn into avoidable tragedies due to language barriers, delayed emergency response times, and a lack of basic first aid expertise. In addition to these health issues, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) continues to be a serious epidemic where survivors cannot safely seek assistance due to social shame and unequal power dynamics. A contemporary equivalent that is suited to the low-resource settings of today is required, much as the introduction of first aid manuals in 1901 effectively taught the public and democratized emergency care. …

Optimization Of Stamped Tool Geometry Using Regression-Based Cost Models And Structural Constraints, Matthew J. Teague May 2026

Optimization Of Stamped Tool Geometry Using Regression-Based Cost Models And Structural Constraints, Matthew J. Teague

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Stamped steel paint can openers are simple tools but still require sufficient strength for the end user and low material consumption for the manufacturer. The goal of this project is to optimize the stamped design of a paint can opener by reducing material cost while maintaining structural rigidity and device performance. This was achieved in part by simplifying the tool’s geometry so that an equation for the mass could be developed analytically and checked against the simulation’s outputs. First, a 25-run design of experiments was created that varied the shaft length and the endloop diameter. Next, a CAD model for …

Making Sense Of The Faith-Based School’S Mission: An Instrumental Case Study Exploring How The School’S Espoused Mission Is Enacted, Richard Mingerink May 2026

Making Sense Of The Faith-Based School’S Mission: An Instrumental Case Study Exploring How The School’S Espoused Mission Is Enacted, Richard Mingerink

Dissertations

What happens in the space between a school’s espoused mission and the enactment of that mission in the classroom? For faith-based schools—institutions whose very identity rests upon a religiously grounded purpose—this question is not merely technical but existential. While these schools publicly espouse missions centered on a religious faith, research consistently suggests that what is proclaimed on paper is not always what is practiced in classrooms. The persistent gap between espoused mission and enacted practice raises a critical question: how do educators actually make sense of their school’s religious mission, and how does that sensemaking shape what they do?

This …

Urea-Based Boronium Salts As Antimicrobial Agents, Gabriel Allen Merchant May 2026

Urea-Based Boronium Salts As Antimicrobial Agents, Gabriel Allen Merchant

Honors Theses

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are widely used in disinfectants due to their ability to inhibit the growth of and eliminate microbes. The potency, broad-spectrum activity, and low cost of QACs have made them a cornerstone of modem hygiene. In recent years, QACs have garnered many health and safety concerns due to their overuse and subsequent accumulation in the environment. The increased use of QACs has further led to an increase in antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, making the synthesis of novel antibacterial compounds vital to combat this growing threat. Recent advances in boronium salts offer a unique alternative to address these adverse effects. …

Spectral Characterization Of Colorectal Cancer Using Excitation-Scanning Hyperspectral Imaging, Natalie Hadad May 2026

Spectral Characterization Of Colorectal Cancer Using Excitation-Scanning Hyperspectral Imaging, Natalie Hadad

Honors Theses

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common and deadly cancers worldwide, with a lifetime risk of approximately one in twenty-three for men and one in twenty-five for women. Although early detection significantly improves survival, current diagnostic approaches such as tissue biopsy are invasive, reliant on subjective interpretation, have extended turnaround times, and risk missing flat or depressed lesions that are more difficult to detect than raised polyps. These limitations highlight the need for objective, minimally invasive technologies capable of detecting early tissue changes. This study investigates excitation-scanning hyperspectral imaging (Ex-HSI) as a label-free optical approach for identifying colorectal cancer–associated …

Structure-Property Relationships In Epoxy/Amine-Derived Polyester Thermosets, Jeffrey Aguinaga May 2026

Structure-Property Relationships In Epoxy/Amine-Derived Polyester Thermosets, Jeffrey Aguinaga

Dissertations

This dissertation relates to ester-containing aromatic epoxy monomers and thermosets formed via reaction of those monomers with either ester-containing or non-ester-containing amine comonomers.  Due to the wide array of potential reactants (many bioderivable) to form ester-containing epoxy monomers that are closely related in structure, fundamental study of structure-property relationships was highly practical for this platform of materials.

Though properties of aromatic epoxy thermosets of relatively high-crosslink density and network strand rigidity vary widely with chemical composition and architecture, relatively low fracture toughness and impact resistance due to lack of ductility are typical. Integration of ester functionality and aliphatic spacers/connectors for …

Exploring The Effects Of Polymer-Graphene Interactions On Bulk Composite Properties Using Finite Element Analysis, Bryant Grove May 2026

Exploring The Effects Of Polymer-Graphene Interactions On Bulk Composite Properties Using Finite Element Analysis, Bryant Grove

Dissertations

As a filler in high performance materials, graphene significantly enhances the mechanical properties of polymer composites. Experimental characterization of graphene composite enhancements is limited by labor-intensive processes in both synthesizing composites for different purposes and in characterizing the interactions between graphene and polymer composites that lead to these enhancements. Computational approaches such as finite element analysis (FEA) are suitable alternatives that go beyond experimental analysis. This dissertation demonstrates the utility of FEA in analyzing polymer graphene composites with an emphasis on modeling the interaction between graphene fillers and the matrix within the interphase formed between them. The accessible design framework …

Sunless, Gabriel Olah May 2026

Sunless, Gabriel Olah

Theses & ETDs

My thesis is simple. It is a novella which I have been working on in one form or another for the better part of a year and a half. Over my lengthy times working on this work, it has changed shape drastically, just as any proper story should. Characters were added and dropped, locations were visited and left behind, ideas and plotlines developed or removed, all eventually being boiled down into this current version. This is a version I hold no belief in being perfect, for perfect is the enemy of done, but I am of the belief that it …

Inverse Problems On Networks With Self-Loops And Related Problems In Electrical Impedance Tomography, Hope Steen May 2026

Inverse Problems On Networks With Self-Loops And Related Problems In Electrical Impedance Tomography, Hope Steen

Theses & ETDs

The central topic of this thesis is the inverse problem for random walks on graphs, i.e. finding the transition probabilities of some Markov chain restricted to a rooted tree graph with known topology and a set of joint distributions of first hitting time and hitting place. It has already been shown by de la Peña et al. in the case where self-transitions are prohibited that the transition probabilities of such a Markov chain can be determined given these joint distributions on two ’boundary layers.’ This thesis proves that the problem can be solved for Markov chains allowing self-transitions, via an …

Sustainability Savvy: The Role Of Competence And Efficacy In Promoting Pro-Environmental Behavior, Lorenna Graham May 2026

Sustainability Savvy: The Role Of Competence And Efficacy In Promoting Pro-Environmental Behavior, Lorenna Graham

Environmental Studies Honors Projects

Combatting environmental issues requires both large-scale and individual change. While many understand that personal pro-environmental behavior (PEB) is necessary, individuals do not always engage in this behavior (Hines, 1986, Goh, 2022). Thus, there is a need to investigate psychological factors which encourage PEB. Prior research suggests competence and outcome efficacy as likely PEB predictors (Bentler, 2023, Lavergne & Pelletier, 2015, Priolo, 2016), while cognitive dissonance has been shown to both encourage and discourage PEB (Bouwman, 2022, Dickerson, 1992, Ehrich & Irwin, 2005). Study 1 investigates the relationship between cognitive dissonance and PEB with competence and outcome efficacy as potential moderators. …
