More Efficient Secure Function Evaluation Using Tiny Trusted Third Parties, Alexander Iliev, Sean Smith Jul 2005

More Efficient Secure Function Evaluation Using Tiny Trusted Third Parties, Alexander Iliev, Sean Smith

Computer Science Technical Reports

Secure Function Evaluation (SFE) problems. We assume that a really trustworthy TTP device will have very limited protected memory and computation environment---a \emph{tiny TTP}. This precludes trivial solutions like "just run the function in the TTP". Traditional scrambled circuit evaluation approaches to SFE have a very high overhead in using indirectly-addressed arrays---every array access's cost is linear in the array size. The main gain in our approach is that array access can be provided with much smaller overhead---$O(\sqrt{N}\log N)$. This expands the horizon of problems which can be efficiently solved using SFE. Additionally, our technique provides a simple way to …

Fire Retardancy Of Vinyl Ester Nanocomposites: Synergy With Phosphorus-Based Fire Retardants, Grace Chigwada, Panchatapa Jash, David D. Jiang, Charles A. Wilkie Jul 2005

Fire Retardancy Of Vinyl Ester Nanocomposites: Synergy With Phosphorus-Based Fire Retardants, Grace Chigwada, Panchatapa Jash, David D. Jiang, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Vinyl ester (PVE) nanocomposites were prepared using both clay and polyhedral oligosilsesquioxanes (POSS) as the nano-dimensional material. From cone calorimetric data, it was shown that both POSS and clay affect the flammability of the nanocomposites to the same extent. To improve on the flame retardancy, the nanocomposites were combined with phosphorous-containing fire retardants (FRs) and the result compared to the benchmark halogen-containing system. The use of the cone calorimeter to investigate the fire properties of these nanocomposites showed a great reduction in peak heat release rate (PHRR) in the presence of phosphate and slight improvements in average mass loss rate …

Modular Neural Network To Predict The Distribution Of Nitrate In Ground Water Using On-Ground Nitrogen Loading And Recharge Data, M. Almasri, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Artificial neural networks have proven to be an attractive mathematical tool to represent complex relationships in many branches of hydrology. Due to this attractive feature, neural networks are increasingly being applied in subsurface modeling where intricate physical processes and lack of detailed field data prevail. In this paper, a methodology using modular neural networks (MNN) is proposed to simulate the nitrate concentrations in an agriculture-dominated aquifer. The methodology relies on geographic information system (GIS) tools in the preparation and processing of the MNN input–output data. The basic premise followed in developing the MNN input–output response patterns is to designate the …

A Sensor Fusion Approach To Coastal Mapping, Maryellen Sault, Christopher Parrish, Stephen A. White, Jon Sellars, Jason Woolard

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is responsible for mapping the national shoreline. This shoreline provides the critical baseline for demarcating the United States’ marine territorial limits, including its Exclusive Economic Zone; and is used in updating NOAA nautical charts and management of coastal resourses. NGS conducted a data fusion research project in collaboration with the Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetric Technical Center of Expertise (JALBTCX) and other NOAA partners. In March and April of 2004, hyperspectral imagery, topographic lidar data, and highresolution digital color imagery were collected simultaneously aboard the NOAA Citation for coastal project areas in Florida and California. The …

Expandable Graphite/Polyamide-6 Nanocomposites, Fawn Marie Uhl, Qiang Yao, Hiroyoshi Nakajima, Evangelos Manias, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Polyamide-6 (PA-6)/graphite nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending, using a variety of graphites, including virgin graphite, expandable graphites and expanded graphite. The resulting nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimetry, and tensile mechanical analysis. Nanocomposite formation does occur, as denoted by the nanometre dispersion of graphite layers in the polymer matrix, and the dispersion depends on the graphite treatment. The material properties of the resulting composites are improved relative to the virgin/unfilled polymer; in particular, there is an enhancement of the thermal stability without any significant deterioration of the mechanical properties.

Evaluation Of Glycine Max Mrna Clusters, Ronald L. Frank, Fikret Erçal Jul 2005

Evaluation Of Glycine Max Mrna Clusters, Ronald L. Frank, Fikret Erçal

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: Clustering the ESTs from a large dataset representing a single species is a convenient starting point for a number of investigations into gene discovery, genome evolution, expression patterns, and alternatively spliced transcripts. Several methods have been developed to accomplish this, the most widely available being UniGene, a public domain collection of gene-oriented clusters for over 45 different species created and maintained by NCBI. The goal is for each cluster to represent a unique gene, but currently it is not known how closely the overall results represent that reality. UniGene's build procedure begins with initial mRNA clusters before joining ESTs. …

Interannual Variation Of Stratification In Lower Chesapeake Bay, Christopher S. Katzenmiller Jul 2005

Interannual Variation Of Stratification In Lower Chesapeake Bay, Christopher S. Katzenmiller

OES Theses and Dissertations

Stratification in the water column can prove to be an important indicator to the state of the water column and ecosystem. The focus of this research is to evaluate trends in stratification in the Lower Chesapeake Bay. Detailed analysis was performed on a 14 year data set to study interannual variation in the region of study. Potential energy anomaly was used to quantify stratification. Potential energy anomaly is the amount of energy required to mix a water column. It is determined from the vertical density structure of density. Potential energy anomaly is the departure of potential energy from climate conditions. …

Three-Coulomb-Wave Pluvinage Model For Compton Double Ionization Of Helium In The Region Of The Cross-Section Maximum, S. Jones, Joseph H. Macek, Don H. Madison Jul 2005

Three-Coulomb-Wave Pluvinage Model For Compton Double Ionization Of Helium In The Region Of The Cross-Section Maximum, S. Jones, Joseph H. Macek, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Double ionization of ground-state helium by the Compton scattering of a photon is calculated using the well-known product of three Coulomb waves (3C) wave function for the final double-continuum state of the atom and the Pluvinage wave function for the initial ground state (also a product of three Coulomb waves). The theoretical model fails to predict both the shape and the overall magnitude of the observed integrated cross section vs. Incident-photon energy. However, when the monopole part of the electron-photon interaction is removed by an ad hoc procedure, qualitative agreement is obtained, although the absolute size of the cross section …

What Matters Most? A Survey Of Accomplished Middle-Level Educators' Beliefs And Values About Literacy, Marla H. Mallette, Bill Henk, Jan E. Waggoner, Carol J. Delaney

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Ninety teachers working in award-winning middle schools responded to a survey that explored, quantitatively and qualitatively, how they (1) defined themselves as teachers of literacy, (2) viewed multiliteracies in adolescents' lives, and (3) valued these literacies in the classroom. Mean scores indicated that Basic Literacies (e.g., comprehension, word identification, fluency, writing) were rated more favorably than New Literacies (e.g., media, Internet, critical, out of school). Strong qualitative support existed for literacy instruction in all disciplines, but interpretations varied. The most positive agreement centered on every teacher being a teacher of literacy. Little support existed for developing students' out-of-school literacies in …

Electromagnetic Measurement Of Spinal Curvature, Ronan Fitzmaurice, Ted Burke, Annraoi De Paor Jul 2005

Electromagnetic Measurement Of Spinal Curvature, Ronan Fitzmaurice, Ted Burke, Annraoi De Paor

Conference Papers

In this paper, we describe an original mathematical technique for calculating the position and orientation of an electromagnetic coil from a minimum of four collinear magnetic field measurements. This problem arose in the development of a system for evaluating the efficacy of inflatable back rafts designed to mitigate complications that arise from the immobilisation of patients with suspected spinal injuries on spinal boards during transport to hospital. Electromagnetic markers are attached to points of interest on the back of an immobilised test subject. Spinal curvature is then measured by passing a magnetometer underneath the board.

Minority Access To Higher Education And Its Social Outcomes, Noga Admon Jul 2005

Minority Access To Higher Education And Its Social Outcomes, Noga Admon

Essays in Education

The social disadvantage of minority groups has been attributed to their inability to compete in the labor market due to lower rates of obtaining higher credentials, compared with middle-class Whites. During the 70’s and the 80’s, several large-scale policies attempted to promote minority access to higher education. This paper reviews two of these policies – the CUNY open admissions and the expansion of community colleges – and suggests that even though minority access to higher education has increased, this increase was counterbalanced by a rise in internal stratification within higher education. As a result, increased access did not generate equality …

An Anglo-American Rethinks Native American Education: Can We Avoid Yesterday’S Tragedies?, Mitchell J. Moore Jul 2005

An Anglo-American Rethinks Native American Education: Can We Avoid Yesterday’S Tragedies?, Mitchell J. Moore

Essays in Education

“It’s ironic that Indian people are not allowed to be experts in themselves—it’s usually someone else ‘defining’ the Indian” (Pewewardy, 1992, p.5). Tragically, this is an accurate representation of much of the history of Native American education. Major changes have taken place in the last thirty years to correct this tragedy and to return the education of Native Americans to Native Americans. Progress, however has been slow; years of cultural, geographic and educational genocide by Europeans and Non-Indigenous governments have been difficult to overcome. To understand the historical underpinnings of the modern Native American education movement, three general eras of …

Kondratieff Cycles And Long Waves Of Educational Reform: Educational Policy And Practice From 1789 To 2045, Hasan Simsek Jul 2005

Kondratieff Cycles And Long Waves Of Educational Reform: Educational Policy And Practice From 1789 To 2045, Hasan Simsek

Essays in Education

The purpose of this article is to develop a new perspective of large-scale educational reform as long waves or long cycles in the history of Western industrialized countries (specifically the US). Kondratieff cycles refer to a “law of motion” in the capitalist mode of production: Since the establishment of the industrial capitalism in the late 18th century, capitalism has moved through long waves of upswings followed by long waves of downswings, each complete cycle comprising about 50 to 60 years intervals. So far, four Kondratieff cycles have been identified: 1789-1849, 1849-1894, 1894-1945, 1945-1995. It is argued that we are in …

Communication Technology And Pedagogical Power, Maurice Tardif Jul 2005

Communication Technology And Pedagogical Power, Maurice Tardif

Essays in Education

The ideas put forward here, although supported by empirical studies on the work of teachers and their profession (Mukamurera, 1998, 1999; Lessard and Tardif, 1996; Tardif and Lessard, 1999), examine, mostly from a philosophical and sociological perspective, the foundations of educational communication with respect to the role and meaning of ICTs in education. This article presents a critical reflection, wholly theoretical and non-objectifying, on the relation between ICTs and teaching. Because it is critical in nature, this reflection is not neutral. It is based on suppositions concerning the nature of teaching, and, in broader terms, on human communication and the …

Calculation Of Hydrogenic Bethe Logarithms For Rydberg States, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr Jul 2005

Calculation Of Hydrogenic Bethe Logarithms For Rydberg States, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We describe the calculation of hydrogenic (one-loop) Bethe logarithms for all states with principal quantum numbers 200. While, in principle, the calculation of the Bethe logarithm is a rather easy computational problem involving only the nonrelativistic (Schrdinger) theory of the hydrogen atom, certain calculational difficulties affect highly excited states, and in particular states for which the principal quantum number is much larger than the orbital angular momentum quantum number. Two evaluation methods are contrasted. One of these is based on the calculation of the principal value of a specific integral over a virtual photon energy. The other method relies directly …

Self-Energy Values For P States In Hydrogen And Low-Z Hydrogenlike Ions, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr Jul 2005

Self-Energy Values For P States In Hydrogen And Low-Z Hydrogenlike Ions, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We describe a nonperturbative (in Z α ) numerical evaluation of the one-photon electron self-energy for 3P1/2 , 3P3/2 , 4P1/2, and 4P3/2 states in hydrogenlike atomic systems with charge numbers Z = 1 to 5. The numerical results are found to be in agreement with known terms in the expansion of the self-energy in powers of Z α and lead to improved theoretical predictions for the self-energy shift of these states.

Charge Transfer In Slow Collisions Of C⁶⁺ With H Below 1 Kev / Amu, Chen-Nan Liu, Shu-Chun Cheng, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin Jul 2005

Charge Transfer In Slow Collisions Of C⁶⁺ With H Below 1 Kev / Amu, Chen-Nan Liu, Shu-Chun Cheng, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We reexamine the charge transfer cross sections for C⁶⁺ + H collisions for energies below 1 keV / amu using a fully quantum mechanical approach, based on the hyperspherical close-coupling method. Whereas most previous theoretical and experimental data agree well for the dominant charge transfer to the C⁵⁺(n=4) states, there is significant disagreement among the theories for the transition to the weaker n=5 states. Using the present quantum mechanical calculations we analyze the origin of the discrepancy among these previous calculations. We further extend the calculations to collision energies down to about 1 eV and show that electron capture to …

The Relationship Between High School Math Courses, High School Gpa, And Retention Of Honors Scholarships, Diann Ackerman Megert Jul 2005

The Relationship Between High School Math Courses, High School Gpa, And Retention Of Honors Scholarships, Diann Ackerman Megert

Journal of Student Financial Aid

This research examined the high school transcripts of honors scholarship recipients to identify a better criterion for awarding scholarships than high school grade point average (GPA) alone. Specifically, this study compared the honors scholarship retention rate when the scholarship was awarded based on completed advanced high school math classes to the retention rate when the scholarship was based solely on GPA. The research, conducted at a community college in New Mexico, used a calculated MathScore variable and a dichotomous HighMath variable. The HighMath variable was counted if the student completed a class in trigonometry, pre-calculus, or calculus. The results indicated …

Computational Sensing And Closed-Loop Active Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions, Volkan Kamaci Jul 2005

Computational Sensing And Closed-Loop Active Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions, Volkan Kamaci

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Flow separation over lifting aerodynamic components, such as airfoils and wings, occurs during stall conditions which are caused by adverse changes (i.e. high angle of attack, inflow conditions, etc.) in the operating conditions of aerodynamic components. During stall conditions, the flow over airfoil loses its momentum, creating high pressure zones on the upper surface of the airfoil and even a small increase in pressure causes the fluid particles to stop and separate to a low pressure zone. In order to eliminate the flow separation, the low momentum flow should be removed in order to maintain the high momentum and low …

Opal: In Vivo Based Preservation Framework For Locating Lost Web Pages, Terry L. Harrison Jul 2005

Opal: In Vivo Based Preservation Framework For Locating Lost Web Pages, Terry L. Harrison

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

We present Opal, a framework for interactively locating missing web pages (http status code 404). Opal is an example of "in vivo" preservation: harnessing the collective behavior of web archives, commercial search engines, and research projects for the purpose of preservation. Opal servers learn from their experiences and are able to share their knowledge with other Opal servers using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Using cached copies that can be found on the web, Opal creates lexical signatures which are then used to search for similar versions of the web page. Using the OAI-PMH to facilitate …

A Feature Specific Modular Approach For Pose And Illumination Invariant Face Recognition, Praveen Sankaran Jul 2005

A Feature Specific Modular Approach For Pose And Illumination Invariant Face Recognition, Praveen Sankaran

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A feature specific modular-PCA (Principal Component Analysis) approach on face images in multiple views for pose and illumination invariant face recognition is presented in this thesis. Principal components are extracted from different sub-modules of the image and are concatenated to make a single signature vector to represent a face region in a particular viewing angle. Additional principal components are extracted horn image regions representing key facial feature and are added as an extension of the signature vector. Feature specific modular-PCA approach is capable of recognizing faces in varying illumination conditions and facial expressions as the modular components represent the local …
