Enhancement Of Calcium-Dependent Afterpotentials In Oxytocin Neurons Of The Rat Supraoptic Nucleus During Lactation, Ryoichi Teruyama, William E. Armstrong Jul 2005

Enhancement Of Calcium-Dependent Afterpotentials In Oxytocin Neurons Of The Rat Supraoptic Nucleus During Lactation, Ryoichi Teruyama, William E. Armstrong

Faculty Publications

The firing pattern of oxytocin (OT) hormone synthesizing neurons changes dramatically immediately before each milk ejection, when a brief burst of action potentials is discharged. OT neurons possess intrinsic currents that would modulate this burst. Our previous studies showed the amplitude of the Ca2+-dependent afterhyperpolarization (AHP) following spike trains is significantly larger during lactation. In the present study we sought to determine which component of the AHP is enhanced, and whether the enhancement could be related to changes in whole-cell Ca2+ current or the Ca2+ transient in identified OT or vasopressin (VP) neurons during lactation. We confirmed, with whole-cell current-clamp …

Consistent Discretizations: The Gowdy Spacetimes, Rodolfo Gambini, Marcelo Ponce, Jorge Pullin Jul 2005

Consistent Discretizations: The Gowdy Spacetimes, Rodolfo Gambini, Marcelo Ponce, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We apply the consistent discretization scheme to general relativity particularized to the Gowdy spacetimes. This is the first time the framework has been applied in detail in a nonlinear generally covariant gravitational situation with local degrees of freedom. We show that the scheme can be correctly used to numerically evolve the spacetimes. We show that the resulting numerical schemes are convergent and preserve approximately the constraints as expected. Given the numerical complexity of the method, further work will be needed to make it competitive with the usual free evolution methods currently in use in numerical relativity. © 2005 The American …

Evidence For BS0→Фф Decay And Measurements Of Branching Ratio And ACp For B+→Фk+, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present the first evidence of charmless decays of the Bs0 meson, the decay Bs0→фф, and a measurement of the branching ratio BR(Bs0→фф) using 180 pb-1 of data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. In addition, the BR and direct CP asymmetry for the B+→фK+ decay are measured. We obtain BR(Bs0→фф)=[14-5+6 (stat)±6(syst)]×10-6, BR(B+→фK+)=[7.6±1.3(stat)±0.6(syst)]×10-6, and ACP (B+→фK+)=-0.07±0.17(stat) -0.02+0.03 (syst). Both decays are governed in the …

Analysis Of Liquid-Phase Chemical Detection Using Guided Shear Horizontal-Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors, Zhonghui Li, Yolanda Jones, Jeanne M. Hossenlopp, Richard Cernosek, Fabien Josse

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Direct chemical sensing in liquid environments using polymer-guided shear horizontal surface acoustic wave sensor platforms on 36° rotated Y-cut LiTaO3 is investigated. Design considerations for optimizing these devices for liquid-phase detection are systematically explored. Two different sensor geometries are experimentally and theoretically analyzed. Dual delay line devices are used with a reference line coated with poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and a sensing line coated with a chemically sensitive polymer, which acts as both a guiding layer and a sensing layer or with a PMMA waveguide and a chemically sensitive polymer. Results show the three-layer model provides higher sensitivity than the …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Tool Heating During Friction Stir Welding, Joshua L. Covington Jul 2005

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Tool Heating During Friction Stir Welding, Joshua L. Covington

Theses and Dissertations

The heat input to the tool has been investigated for friction stir welding (FSW) of aluminum alloy AL 7075-T7351 over a wide range of process operating parameters using a combined experimental/numerical approach. In a statistical Design of Experiments fashion, 54 experimental welds (bead-on-plate) were performed at 27 different parameter combinations. Measured outputs during each of the welds included forces in all three coordinate directions and internal temperature of the rotating tool at three locations near the tool/workpiece interface. The heat input to the tool was also identified for each weld using infrared imaging temperature measurement techniques and the portion of …

The Rural Educator

The Principals Excellence Program (PEP), a cohort-based professional development project for administrator certified practitioners, is one of 24 projects a cross the United States supported by federal funds from the No Child Left Behind legislation. The three-year program is conducted through a partnership between Pike County School District, a high-need rural system in Central Appalachia, and the University of Kentucky, located 150 miles away. A major goal for PEP is improved school leadership focused on enhanced student learning. Findings in this paper include inprogress evaluations of program impact toward (a) preparing school leaders to promote learning success for all, (b) …

Optical Deflection And Temporal Characterization Of An Ultrafast Laser-Produced Electron Beam, Sudeep Banerjee, Scott Sepke, Rahul Shah, Anthony Valenzuela, Anatoly Maksimchuk, Donald P. Umstadter Jul 2005

Optical Deflection And Temporal Characterization Of An Ultrafast Laser-Produced Electron Beam, Sudeep Banerjee, Scott Sepke, Rahul Shah, Anthony Valenzuela, Anatoly Maksimchuk, Donald P. Umstadter

Donald Umstadter Publications

The interaction of a laser-produced electron beam with an ultraintense laser pulse in free space is studied. We show that the optical pulse with a0=0.5 imparts momentum to the electron beam, causing it to deflect along the laser propagation direction. The observed 3-degree angular deflection is found to be independent of polarization and in good agreement with a theoretical model for the interaction of free electrons with a tightly focused Gaussian pulse, but only when longitudinal fields are taken into account. This technique is used to temporally characterize a subpicosecond laser-wakefield-driven electron bunch. Applications to electron-beam conditioning are …

Cache Characterization And Performance Studies Using Locality Surfaces, Elizabeth Schreiner Sorenson Jul 2005

Cache Characterization And Performance Studies Using Locality Surfaces, Elizabeth Schreiner Sorenson

Theses and Dissertations

Today's processors commonly use caches to help overcome the disparity between processor and main memory speeds. Due to the principle of locality, most of the processor's requests for data are satisfied by the fast cache memory, resulting in a signficant performance improvement. Methods for evaluating workloads and caches in terms of locality are valuable for cache design. In this dissertation, we present a locality surface which displays both temporal and spatial locality on one three-dimensional graph. We provide a solid, mathematical description of locality data and equations for visualization. We then use the locality surface to examine the locality of …

Development Of A Model For The Kinetics And Mechanism Of Nitrogenase, Phillip E. Wilson Jul 2005

Development Of A Model For The Kinetics And Mechanism Of Nitrogenase, Phillip E. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogenase has a central role in the global nitrogen cycle as the enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of atmospheric N2 to NH3. Fixed nitrogen is generally limiting in the environment and in agriculture, so nitrogenase has received much attention as an alternative to nitrogen fertilizers. Characterizing the mechanism of nitrogenase is the goal of this work. The molybdenum nitrogenase enzyme system is comprised of the MoFe protein and the Fe protein. Interactions between these proteins and nucleotides are crucial to catalysis. An important approach to characterize these interactions is to correlate the kinetics of nitrogenase catalysis to a mechanism based …

Angiotensin Ii-Mediated Regulation Of The Human Angiotensin Ii Type 1 Receptor Gene, Xylophone Vijai Aasee Victor Jul 2005

Angiotensin Ii-Mediated Regulation Of The Human Angiotensin Ii Type 1 Receptor Gene, Xylophone Vijai Aasee Victor

Theses and Dissertations

The physiological responses of angiotensin II (Ang II) are mediated across the cell membrane through the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), a heptahelical membrane protein coupled to trimeric G-proteins on the cytosolic side. AT1R on binding its ligand, Ang II, leads to downregulation of cell-surface receptor and also its mRNA. We have investigated whether the 3'- and 5'-untranslated regions of the human AT1R mRNA mediate the degradation of hAT1R mRNA by post-transcriptional mechanisms in human adrenocortical carcinoma cell line (H295R cells). Protein kinase C (PKC) activator, phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA), showed that the downregulation of hAT1R mRNA is mediated by the …

Annual Exceedance Probability Analysis, Masako Amai Gardner Jul 2005

Annual Exceedance Probability Analysis, Masako Amai Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) is the method used by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to determine the probability of flooding caused by the failure of a levee or other flood control structure. This method shows the probability of flooding only at one particular location at a time. In order to overcome the limitation of AEP, a new method of studying flood probability, called an AEP map, was presented. By using hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software, an AEP map can be created to determine and visualize the spatial distribution of the probability of flooding. An AEP map represents a continuous …

An Examination Of The Role Of Writing In Mathematics Instruction, Amy Jeppsen Jul 2005

An Examination Of The Role Of Writing In Mathematics Instruction, Amy Jeppsen

Theses and Dissertations

This study uses qualitative methods to investigate the use of writing in a content course for elementary education majors in which writing was considered an important part of mathematical learning. The study differs from previous studies by investigating the role of writing in the everyday instructional activities, rather than investigating writing as a separate mathematical activity. An analysis of the instruction and class discussions that took place in this class reveals that components of writing that were addressed implicitly and explicitly in classroom instruction were developed simultaneously with conceptual understanding, suggesting a much stronger and more integral relationship between writing …

Elevation, Longitudinal Profile, And Schmidt Hammer Analysis Of Strath Terraces Through Capitol Reef National Park, Utah: Bedrock Channel Response To Climate Forcing?, James L. Eddleman

Theses and Dissertations

Elevation, longitudinal profile, and Schmidt hammer data indicate that strath terraces (specifically the lower elevation terraces) mapped in the Fremont River drainage of Capitol Reef National Park are correlative to the terraces of the smaller Pleasant Creek drainage located approximately ten miles to the south. This correlation suggests that drainage development in this area of the Colorado Plateau was strongly dependent upon a regional-scale forcing mechanism (e.g. climate) rather than strictly independent basin-scale processes. Elevations of mapped strath terraces and their associated black volcanic boulder deposits were calculated from geologic maps, Digital Elevation Models (DEM), and Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles of …

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Co(C2H8N2)3][Bi2I9], crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Cmc21. The asymmetric unit contains half of a [Co(en)3]3+ cation (en is ethylenediamine) and half of a [Bi2I9]3- anion. Both species are located on mirror planes, requiring the [Co(en)3]3+ cation to be present as a statistically disordered mixture of both enantiomeric forms. Crystals were grown solvothermally from an ethanol-water solvent mixture using rac-[Co(en)3]I3 and bismuth triiodide …

Assessment Of Resource Selection Using Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Systems (Gis) For Two Vertebrates In Disparate Habitats: The Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) And The North Atlantic Right Whale (Eubalaena Glacialis), Cherie A. Keller Jul 2005

Keller

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a treatise on spatially-explicit resource selection on two very different vertebrate species. The North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is the most endangered large whales in the world. Ship strikes and fishing gear entanglement are impediments to recovery. The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is an imperiled species whose upland habitats are shrinking from urban and agricultural development. Determining spatial distribution of important resources is important for conservation strategies. Historical and modern thinking of habitat selection theory and analytical techniques are reviewed and applied to these species. Fine-scale resource selection of sea surface temperature …

The purpose of this study was to provide historical and philosophical information regarding the field of Adult Education from the perspective of 15 African Americans. This studys design utilized the findings from African-American Adult Educators (A-AAE) to add to the depth and breadth of information about Adult Education by engaging participants in reflective dialogue regarding the field and their experiences.

This qualitative design used semi-structured interviews to obtain information about the relationships among and influences of major professors and dissertation committees. The study included influences, direct and indirect, as well as influential authors, books, and publications. Adult Education was analyzed …

Model Simulations Of A Shock‐Cloud Interaction In The Cygnus Loop, Daniel J. Patnaude, Robert A. Fesen Jul 2005

Model Simulations Of A Shock‐Cloud Interaction In The Cygnus Loop, Daniel J. Patnaude, Robert A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present optical observations and two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling of an isolated shocked ISM cloud. Hα images taken in 1992.6 and 2003.7 of a small optical emission cloud along the southwestern limb of the Cygnus Loop were used to measure positional displacements of ~01 yr-1 for surrounding Balmer-dominated emission filaments and 0025-0055 yr-1 for internal cloud emission features. These measurements imply transverse velocities of 250 and 80-140 km s-1 for ambient ISM and internal cloud shocks, respectively. A lack of observed turbulent gas stripping at the cloud-ISM boundary in the Hα images suggests that there is not an …

Drought affects virtually all regions of the world and results in significant economic, social, and environmental impacts. The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates annual drought-related losses in the U.S. at $6–$8 billion, which is more than any other natural hazard. Congress enacted the Agricultural Risk Protection Act of 2000 to encourage the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Risk Management Agency (RMA) and farmers to be more proactive in managing drought risk. Through the NSF’s Digital Government Program, the USDA RMA is working with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Computer Science and Engineering Department, National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC), and High Plains …

An Efficient Consistency Algorithm For The Temporal Constraint Satisfaction Problem, Berthe Y. Choueiry, Lin Xu Jul 2005

An Efficient Consistency Algorithm For The Temporal Constraint Satisfaction Problem, Berthe Y. Choueiry, Lin Xu

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Dechter et al. [5] proposed solving the Temporal Constraint Satisfaction Problem (TCSP) by modeling it as a meta-CSP, which is a finite CSP with a unique global constraint. The size of this global constraint is exponential in the number of time points in the original TCSP, and generalized-arc consistency is equivalent to finding the minimal network of the TCSP, which is NP-hard. We introduce _AC, an efficient consistency algorithm for filtering the meta-CSP. This algorithm significantly reduces the domains of the variables of the meta-CSP without guaranteeing arc-consistency. We use _AC as a preprocessing step to solving the meta-CSP. We …
