Determinations of the primordial helium abundance are used in precision cosmological tests. These require highly accurate He I recombination rate coefficients. Here we reconsider the formation of He I recombination lines in the low-density limit. This is the simplest case, and it forms the basis for the more complex situation in which collisions are important. The formation of a recombination line is a two-step process, beginning with the capture of a continuum electron into a bound state and followed by radiative cascade to ground. The rate coefficient for capture from the continuum is obtained from photoionization cross sections and detailed …
The Perceptions Of High School Physical Educators On The Benefits Of Block Scheduling In The State Of Utah, Marilyn Miller
The Perceptions Of High School Physical Educators On The Benefits Of Block Scheduling In The State Of Utah, Marilyn Miller
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to examine the extent to which the block schedule is being used in Utah high school physical education, and determine teacher's perceptions of block scheduling in teaching physical education. Block scheduling is a new and more efficient way of organizing the school day. NASPE has found the following positive effects in block scheduling: a better learning environment, more access to stronger curriculum, detailed instruction and demonstrations, and more variety in assessment (NASPE, 2000). Although there were several different forms of the block schedule reported, it appears that a majority of physical educators have discovered …
Cosmic Rays From Gamma-Ray Bursts In The Galaxy, Charles Dennison Dermer, Jeremy M. Holmes
Cosmic Rays From Gamma-Ray Bursts In The Galaxy, Charles Dennison Dermer, Jeremy M. Holmes
Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications
The rate of terrestrial irradiation events by Galactic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is estimated using recent standard-energy results. We assume that GRBs accelerate high-energy cosmic rays, and we present results of three-dimensional simulations of cosmic rays moving in the Galactic magnetic field and diffusing through pitch-angle scattering. An on-axis GRB extinction event begins with a powerful prompt γ-ray and neutron pulse, followed by a longer lived phase from cosmic-ray protons and neutron-decay protons that diffuse toward Earth. Our results force a reinterpretation of reported ∼10¹⁸ eV cosmic-ray anisotropies and offer a rigorous test of the model in which high-energy cosmic rays …
Preservice Teachers’ Belief Development While Learning To Teach Writing In An Elementary Writing Methods Course, Karen S. Kelley
Preservice Teachers’ Belief Development While Learning To Teach Writing In An Elementary Writing Methods Course, Karen S. Kelley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My study examined the belief development of three preservice teachers as they learned to teach writing in a one-semester elementary writing methods course. I also sought to identify significant episodes that contributed to the preservice teachers’ belief development. Two questions guided my inquiry: How do preservice teachers’ beliefs about writing and the teaching of writing develop while enrolled in an elementary writing methods course? and What episodes do preservice teachers, who are enrolled in an elementary writing methods course, view as significant in helping them negotiate their beliefs about writing and writing instruction? I collected survey data, conducted a series …
Fibonacci Vectors, Ena Salter
Fibonacci Vectors, Ena Salter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
By the n-th Fibonacci (respectively Lucas) vector of length m, we mean the vector whose components are the n-th through (n+m-1)-st Fibonacci (respectively Lucas) numbers. For arbitrary m, we express the dot product of any two Fibonacci vectors, any two Lucas vectors, and any Fibonacci vector and any Lucas vector in terms of the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. We use these formulas to deduce a number of identities involving the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers.

The Discretized Schr ¨ Odinger Equation For The Finite Square Well And Its Relationship To Solid-State Physics, Timothy B. Boykin, Gerhard Klimeck
Birck and NCN Publications
The discretized Schr¨odinger equation is most often used to solve onedimensional quantum mechanics problems numerically. While it has been recognized for some time that this equation is equivalent to a simple tightbinding model and that the discretization imposes an underlying bandstructure unlike free-space quantum mechanics on the problem, the physical implications of this equivalence largely have been unappreciated and the pedagogical advantages accruing from presenting the problem as one of solid-state physics (and not numerics) remain generally unexplored. This is especially true for the analytically solvable discretized finite square well presented here. There are profound differences in the physics of …

Investigation Of Geometrical Effects On Microneedle Geometry For Transdermal Applications, Smitha Shetty
Investigation Of Geometrical Effects On Microneedle Geometry For Transdermal Applications, Smitha Shetty
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Hollow biocompatible microneedle arrays were designed and fabricated using two different bulk micromachining techniques-Deep Reactive Ion Etching and Coherent Porous Silicon technology to investigate their reliability for transdermal applications. An in-house experimental setup was developed for microneedle fracture and split thickness penetration force measurements. Out of plane needle array configurations (100and#956;m needle length) with intra array geometric variations including needle shape, diameter, intra-array pitch and density (1a 625) were characterized on cadaver skin to predict skin barrier penetration without fracture. Use of microneedle array as transdermal patch necessitates reliable penetration and not just pushing against stratum corneum like a bed …

Probability Theory On Semihypergroups, Norbert Youmbi
Probability Theory On Semihypergroups, Norbert Youmbi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Motivated by the work of Hognas and Mukherjea on semigroups,we study semihypergroups, which are structures closer to semigroups than hypergroups in the sense that they do not require an identity or an involution. Dunkl[Du73] calls them hypergroups (without involution), and Jewett[Je75] calls them semiconvos. A semihypergroup does not assume any algebraic operation on itself. To generalize results from semigroups to semihypergroups, we first put together the fundamental algebraic concept a semihypergroup inherits from its measure algebra. Among other things, we define the Rees convolution product, and prove that if X; Y are non-empty sets and H is a hypergroup, then …
Linear Regression Of Censored Length-Biased Lifetimes, Ying Qing Chen, Yan Wang
Linear Regression Of Censored Length-Biased Lifetimes, Ying Qing Chen, Yan Wang
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Length-biased lifetimes may be collected in observational studies or sample surveys due to biased sampling scheme. In this article, we use a linear regression model, namely, the accelerated failure time model, for the population lifetime distributions in regression analysis of the length-biased lifetimes. It is discovered that the associated regression parameters are invariant under the length-biased sampling scheme. According to this discovery, we propose the quasi partial score estimating equations to estimate the population regression parameters. The proposed methodologies are evaluated and demonstrated by simulation studies and an application to actual data set.

Structure And Development Of Pitch Canker Infected Monterey Pine Stands At Año Nuevo, California, Douglas D. Piirto, Sauli Valkonen
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
The sustainability of indigenous Monterey pine (Pinus radiata D. Don)at Ano Nuevo stands in the central coast of California was examined. The foremost management objective in these stands is to establish and maintain stand structures that ensure a sustainable presence of the species in terms of uneven-aged management. The major threats are the proliferation of shade-tolerant tree species and the pitch canker ( Fusarium circinatum) disease. The study was based on data from 17 systematically placed sample plots, measured once, in one stand with a very high degree of variation in stand structure and species composition. The results …

Hard-Sphere Radial Distribution Function Again, Andrij Trokhymchuk, Douglas Henderson, Ivo Nezbeda, Jan Jirsak
Hard-Sphere Radial Distribution Function Again, Andrij Trokhymchuk, Douglas Henderson, Ivo Nezbeda, Jan Jirsak
Faculty Publications
A theoretically based closed-form analytical equation for the radial distribution function, g(r), of a fluid of hard spheres is presented and used to obtain an accurate analytic representation. The method makes use of an analytic expression for the short- and long-range behaviors of g(r), both obtained from the Percus-Yevick equation, in combination with the thermodynamic consistency constraint. Physical arguments then leave only three parameters in the equation of g(r) that are to be solved numerically, whereas all remaining ones are taken from the analytical solution of the Percus-Yevick equation.
Dose Time Response Modeling Of Neurobehavioral Screening Data: Application Of Physiologically Relevant Parameters To Allow For Dose Dependent Time Of Peak Effects, Michael Raymond Wessel
Dose Time Response Modeling Of Neurobehavioral Screening Data: Application Of Physiologically Relevant Parameters To Allow For Dose Dependent Time Of Peak Effects, Michael Raymond Wessel
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In collaboration with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the University of South Florida Health Risk Methodology Group has developed dose-time-response models to characterize neurobehavioral response to chemical exposure. The application of dose-time-response models to neurobehavioral screening tests on laboratory animals allows for benchmark dose estimation to establish exposure limits in environmental risk assessment. This thesis has advanced dose-time-response modeling by generalizing a published toxico diffusion model to allow for dose dependent time of peak effects. To accomplish this, a biphasic model was developed which adopted the effect compartment model paradigm used in pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics to estimate a distributional rate …
Reconstructing Writer Identities, Student Identities, Teacher Identities, And Gender Identities: Chinese Graduate Students In America, Peiling Zhao
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The increasing presence of Chinese international graduate students in American higher education has mandated a closer examination of their multifaceted lives against stereotypes that hinder their efforts to find, transform, or assert their identities in the dominant discourses of American academia and culture.
Cross cultural studies of Chinese international students tend to reinforce stereotypes of their writer identities, learner identities, and teacher identities. Examining these various identities discloses dichotomies that read Chinese students’ traits and behaviors as handicaps and thus characterize them as “abnormal” in relation to the “normal” traits and behaviors of Chinese students’ Western counterparts. Whereas Western student …

Peer-To-Peer Discovery Of Semantic Associations, Matthew Perry, Maciej Janik, Cartic Ramakrishnan, Conrad Ibanez, I. Budak Arpinar, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
The Semantic Web vision promises an extension of the current Web in which all data is annotated with machine understandable metadata. The relationship-centric nature of this data has led to the definition of Semantic Associations, which are complex relationships between resources. Semantic Associations attempt to answer queries of the form “how are resource A and resource B related?” Knowing how two entities are related is a crucial question in knowledge discovery applications. Much the same way humans collaborate and interact to form new knowledge, discovery of Semantic Associations across repositories on a peer-to-peer network can allow peers to share their …

Visible And Near-Infrared Responsivity Of Femtosecond Laser-Structured Photodiodes, J. E. Carey, Catherine Hirshfeld Crouch, M. Y. Shen, E. Mazur
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
We investigated the current-voltage characteristics and responsivity of photodiodes fabricated with silicon that was microstructured by use of femtosecond-laser pulses in a sulfur-containing atmosphere. The photodiodes that we fabricated have a broad spectral response ranging from the visible to the near infrared (400-1600 nm). The responsivity depends on substrate doping, microstructuring fluence, and annealing temperature. We obtained room-temperature responsivities as high as 100 A/W at 1064 nm, 2 orders of magnitude higher than for standard silicon photodiodes. For wavelengths below the bandgap we obtained responsivities as high as 50 mA/W at 1330 nm and 35 mA/W at 1550 nm.

High Speed Flight At Low Altitude: Hazard To Commercial Aviation ?, Paul F. Eschenfelder , Capt.
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 7th (2005)
Commercial aircraft are capable of, and in fact, do, operate at high speed (>250 knots indicated airspeed [KIAS]) at low altitude (below 10,000’ above ground level) worldwide. Design, construction and certification standards for these aircraft were developed over 40 years ago. Since the development of these standards populations of large flocking birds have increased dramatically in many parts of the world. Yet neither design/construction standards nor operational practice have changed to reflect the new threat. Subsequent serious damage resulting from recent collisions indicates change is necessary. Since 2003, flight rules in Canada and the United States have been amended, …
Biofilm Removal Using Bubbles And Sound, Michael R. Parini
Biofilm Removal Using Bubbles And Sound, Michael R. Parini
Theses and Dissertations
Bacteria in biofilms adhere well to surfaces and are quite difficult to remove. Oral plaque is one example of a biofilm. Many researchers have studied ways to remove plaque and bacteria from surfaces. It has been found that the passage of a bubble across a surface to which bacteria has adhered can remove the bacteria from the surface. Biofilms of Streptococcus mutans were grown on glass coverslips as a simple model for oral plaque. The coverslips were mounted in a Plexiglas chamber filled with artificial saliva. A bubble stream was directed at the mounted biofilm. The velocity, gas fraction, median …
