Tuning Tabu Search Strategies Via Visual Diagnosis, Steven Halim, Wee Chong Wan, Hoong Chuin Lau Aug 2005

Tuning Tabu Search Strategies Via Visual Diagnosis, Steven Halim, Wee Chong Wan, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While designing working metaheuristics can be straightforward, tuning them to solve the underlying combinatorial optimization problem well can be tricky. Several tuning methods have been proposed but they do not address the new aspect of our proposed classification of the metaheuristic tuning problem: tuning search strategies. We propose a tuning methodology based on Visual Diagnosis and a generic tool called Visualizer for Metaheuristics Development Framework(V-MDF) to address specifically the problem of tuning search (particularly Tabu Search) strategies. Under V-MDF, we propose the use of a Distance Radar visualizer where the human and computer can collaborate to diagnose the occurrence of …

Wmxml: A System For Watermarking Xml Data, Xuan Zhou, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan, Dhruv Mangla

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As increasing amount of data is published in the form of XML, copyright protection of XML data is becoming an important requirement for many applications. While digital watermarking is a widely used measure to protect digital data from copyright offences, the complex and flexible construction of XML data poses a number of challenges to digital watermarking, such as re-organization and alteration attacks. To overcome these challenges, the watermarking scheme has to be based on the usability of data and the underlying semantics like key attributes and functional dependencies. In this paper, we describe WmXML, a system for watermarking XML documents. …

Translation Initiation Sites Prediction With Mixture Gaussian Models In Human Cdna Sequences, G. Li, Tze-Yun Leong, Louxin Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Translation initiation sites (TISs) are important signals in cDNA sequences. Many research efforts have tried to predict TISs in cDNA sequences. In this paper, we propose to use mixture Gaussian models for TIS prediction. Using both local features and some features generated from global measures, the proposed method predicts TISs with a sensitivity of 98 percent and a specificity of 93.6 percent. Our method outperforms many other existing methods in sensitivity while keeping specificity high. We attribute the improvement in sensitivity to the nature of the global features and the mixture Gaussian models. © 2005 IEEE.

Toward A More Robust And Accurate Cem Fast Integral Equation Solver For Ic Applications, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Yun Hui Chu, Gong Li Wang, I. Ting Chiang, Yuancheng Christopher Pan, Jun Sheng Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We review recent advances in fast algorithms for fast integral equation solvers that are useful for IC applications. We review fast solvers for Laplace's equation, which is about 10 times faster than the conventional fast multipole method. Then we review the physics of low-frequency electromagnetics, and the relevant low-frequency method of moments. We describe a fast solver that allows us to solve over one million unknowns on a workstation recently. In addition, we demonstrate the applications of these fast integral equation solvers to the lithography problem. In addition, we propose a scheme whereby we first characterize blocks of linear circuits …

A Three-Dimensional Fdtd Subgridding Method With Separate Spatial And Temporal Subgridding Interfaces, Kai Xiao, David Pommerenke, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The idea of separating the spatial and temporal subgridding interfaces is introduced in this paper. Based on this idea, the spatial and temporal subgridding algorithms can be developed and analyzed separately. The spatial algorithm was given in the previous paper. In this paper, the temporal subgridding algorithm is described and the stability is illustrated by the analytical formulation of a one-dimensional model. An FDTD code that combines the spatial and temporal subgridding algorithms is implemented. Numerical test models are calculated to show the stability and accuracy of the proposed method.

Characterizing 3-Chloro-P-Toluidine Hydrochloride On Rough-Hulled Rice And Ethyl-Cellulose-Coated Rice Baits Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Randal S. Stahl, Carol Furcowlow, Jerome C. Hurley, John J. Johnston Aug 2005

Characterizing 3-Chloro-P-Toluidine Hydrochloride On Rough-Hulled Rice And Ethyl-Cellulose-Coated Rice Baits Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Randal S. Stahl, Carol Furcowlow, Jerome C. Hurley, John J. Johnston

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Methods are developed to extract and quantitate the avicide 3-chloro-p-toluidine hydrochloride (CPT HCI) from rough-hulled rice and ethyl-cellulose-coated rice baits using high-performance liquid chromatography. The mobile phase used in the ethyl-cellulose-coated rice matrix method is an acetonitrile(ACN)-phosphate buffer (60:40) at pH 8, and the rough-hulled rice matrix method uses an ACN-phosphate (70:30) buffer at pH 2. Increased retention time is observed for CPT HCI at the higher pH. The two methods have been useful in characterizing different bait formulations in an ongoing pesticide formulation improvement program.

Organizational Evolution: Applying Genetic Principles To The Management Of Extension Systems, John A. Winder Aug 2005

Organizational Evolution: Applying Genetic Principles To The Management Of Extension Systems, John A. Winder

Journal of Extension

Insight into organizational management can be gained by looking at natural systems. Ideas in Extension organizations are analogous to the genetic makeup of populations of organisms. Genetic makeup determines the chemistry, size and behavior of these populations. Similarly, ideas in organizations determine the future size, activities and effectiveness. This article first examines the principles of population genetics and how these principles drive genetic change. This concept is then extended to Extension to demonstrate how ideas appear to follow similar laws. Finally, this concept is used to derive suggestions for improving effectiveness of organizations.

Claw -Free Graphs And Line Graphs, Yehong Shao Aug 2005

Claw -Free Graphs And Line Graphs, Yehong Shao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The research of my dissertation is motivated by the conjecture of Thomassen that every 4-connected line graph is hamiltonian and by the conjecture of Tutte that every 4-edge-connected graph has a no-where-zero 3-flow. Towards the hamiltonian line graph problem, we proved that every 3-connected N2-locally connected claw-free graph is hamiltonian, which was conjectured by Ryjacek in 1990; that every 4-connected line graph of an almost claw free graph is hamiltonian connected, and that every triangularly connected claw-free graph G with |E( G)| ≥ 3 is vertex pancyclic. Towards the second conjecture, we proved that every line graph of a 4-edge-connected …

Parameter Incremental Learning Algorithm For Neural Networks, Sheng Wan Aug 2005

Parameter Incremental Learning Algorithm For Neural Networks, Sheng Wan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this dissertation, a novel training algorithm for neural networks, named Parameter Incremental Learning (PIL), is proposed, developed, analyzed and numerically validated.;The main idea of the PIL algorithm is based on the essence of incremental supervised learning: that the learning algorithm, i.e., the update law of the network parameters, should not only adapt to the newly presented input-output training pattern, but also preserve the prior results. A general PIL algorithm for feedforward neural networks is accordingly derived, using the first-order approximation technique, with appropriate measures of the performance of preservation and adaptation. The PIL algorithms for the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) …

Distribution Patterns Of Lentic-Breeding Amphibians In Relation To Ultraviolet Radiation Exposure In Western North America, Michael J. Adams, Blake R. Hossack, Roland A. Knapp, Paul Stephen Corn, Stephen A. Diamond, Peter C. Trenham, Dan B. Fagre Jul 2005

Distribution Patterns Of Lentic-Breeding Amphibians In Relation To Ultraviolet Radiation Exposure In Western North America, Michael J. Adams, Blake R. Hossack, Roland A. Knapp, Paul Stephen Corn, Stephen A. Diamond, Peter C. Trenham, Dan B. Fagre

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

An increase in ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation has been posited to be a potential factor in the decline of some amphibian population. This hypothesis has received support from laboratory and field experiments showing that current levels of UV-B can cause embryo mortality in some species, but little research has addressed whether UV-B is influencing the distribution of amphibian populations. We compared patterns of amphibian presence to sitespecific estimates of UV-B dose at 683 ponds and lakes in Glacier, Olympic, and Sequoia–Kings Canyon National Parks. All three parks are located in western North America, a region with a concentration of documented amphibian …

Search For Higgs Bosons Decaying Into B B̅ And Produced In Association With A Vector Boson In P P̅ Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a new search for H0V production, where H0 is a scalar Higgs boson decaying into b b̅ with branching ratio β, and V is a Z0 boson decaying into e+e-, µ+µ-, or νν̅. This search is then combined with previous searches for H0V where V is a W± boson or a hadronically decaying Z0. The data sample consists of 106±4 pb-1 of p p̅ collisions at √s=1.8 TeV accumulated by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Observing no evidence of a …

What’S In A Word? Can “Marriage” Mean Something It Never Meant Before?, Deanna M. Stathis Jul 2005

What’S In A Word? Can “Marriage” Mean Something It Never Meant Before?, Deanna M. Stathis

ExpressO

In the article I explore the clash of the two disciplines—lexicography and law—when courts and legislatures invoke lexicography to address and solve legal issues that are driven by societal concerns. I address, specifically, the marriage debate. I describe the process of dictionary making and some of the basic tenets of lexicography, and the historical role of lexicography in law. I point out what I perceive as misunderstandings, in judicial opinions and scholarly articles, on the subject of lexicography. I discuss how words gain new meanings (and how they do not) and how, when, and by whom their definitions are changed. …

Test Statistics Null Distributions In Multiple Testing: Simulation Studies And Applications To Genomics, Katherine S. Pollard, Merrill D. Birkner, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Sandrine Dudoit

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Multiple hypothesis testing problems arise frequently in biomedical and genomic research, for instance, when identifying differentially expressed or co-expressed genes in microarray experiments. We have developed generally applicable resampling-based single-step and stepwise multiple testing procedures (MTP) for control of a broad class of Type I error rates, defined as tail probabilities and expected values for arbitrary functions of the numbers of false positives and rejected hypotheses (Dudoit and van der Laan, 2005; Dudoit et al., 2004a,b; Pollard and van der Laan, 2004; van der Laan et al., 2005, 2004a,b). As argued in the early article of Pollard and van der …

Electromechanical Imaging Of Biological Systems With Sub-10 Nm Resolution, Sergei V. Kalinin, B. J. Rodriguez, Stephen Jesse, T. Thundat, Alexei Gruverman

Alexei Gruverman Publications

Electromechanical imaging of tooth dentin and enamel has been performed with sub-10 nm resolution using piezoresponse force microscopy. Characteristic piezoelectric domain size and local protein fiber ordering in dentin have been determined. The shape of a single protein fibril in enamel is visualized in real space and local hysteresis loops are measured. Because of the ubiquitous presence of piezoelectricity in biological systems, this approach is expected to find broad application in high-resolution studies of a wide range of biomaterials.

Performance Of Aic-Selected Spatial Covariance Structures For Fmri Data, David A. Stromberg Jul 2005

Performance Of Aic-Selected Spatial Covariance Structures For Fmri Data, David A. Stromberg

Theses and Dissertations

FMRI datasets allow scientists to assess functionality of the brain by measuring the response of blood flow to a stimulus. Since the responses from neighboring locations within the brain are correlated, simple linear models that assume independence of measurements across locations are inadequate. Mixed models can be used to model the spatial correlation between observations, however selecting the correct covariance structure is difficult. Information criteria, such as AIC are often used to choose among covariance structures. Once the covariance structure is selected, significance tests can be used to determine if a region of interest within the brain is significantly active. …

Modeling Global Warming Scenarios In Greenback Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Stomias) Streams: Implications For Species Recovery, Scott J. Cooney, Alan P. Covich, Paul M. Lukacs, Amy L. Harig, Kurt D. Fausch Jul 2005

Modeling Global Warming Scenarios In Greenback Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Stomias) Streams: Implications For Species Recovery, Scott J. Cooney, Alan P. Covich, Paul M. Lukacs, Amy L. Harig, Kurt D. Fausch

Western North American Naturalist

Changes in global climate may exacerbate other anthropogenic stressors, accelerating the decline in distribution and abundance of rare species throughout the world. We examined the potential effects of a warming climate on the greenback cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki stomias), a resident salmonid that inhabits headwater streams of the central Rocky Mountains. Greenbacks are outcompeted at lower elevations by nonnative species of trout and currently are restricted to upper-elevation habitats where barriers to upstream migration by nonnatives are or have been established. We used likelihood-based techniques and information theoretics to select models predicting stream temperature changes for 10 streams …

Detecting Similar Html Documents Using A Sentence-Based Copy Detection Approach, Rajiv Yerra Jul 2005

Detecting Similar Html Documents Using A Sentence-Based Copy Detection Approach, Rajiv Yerra

Theses and Dissertations

Web documents that are either partially or completely duplicated in content are easily found on the Internet these days. Not only these documents create redundant information on the Web, which take longer to filter unique information and cause additional storage space, but also they degrade the efficiency of Web information retrieval. In this thesis, we present a new approach for detecting similar (HTML)Web documents and evaluate its performance. To detect similar documents, we first apply our sentence-based copy detection approach to determine whether sentences in any two documents should be treated as the same or different according to the degrees …

A Modified Poisson–Boltzmann Analysis Of The Capacitance Behavior Of The Electric Double Layer At Low Temperatures, Douglas Henderson, L. B. Bhuiyan, C. W. Outhwaite Jul 2005

A Modified Poisson–Boltzmann Analysis Of The Capacitance Behavior Of The Electric Double Layer At Low Temperatures, Douglas Henderson, L. B. Bhuiyan, C. W. Outhwaite

Faculty Publications

The modified Poisson–Boltzmann theory is used to analyze the anomalous behavior of the electric double layer capacitance for small surface charge at low temperatures and densities. Good agreement is found with simulation and recent density-functional theory results. Negative adsorption is also found in line with theory and simulation. An unsatisfactory feature is the relatively poor structure in this region due to the inherent approximations in the theory. This feature is unimportant in relation to the capacitance results but has implications when calculating adsorption properties.

Physics - All Scholarship

We describe the design, construction and performance of a Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detector (RICH) constructed to identify charged particles in the CLEO experiment. Cherenkov radiation occurs in LiF crystals, both planar and ones with a novel ``sawtooth''-shaped exit surface. Photons in the wavelength interval 135--165 nm are detected using multi-wire chambers filled with a mixture of methane gas and triethylamine vapor. Excellent pion/kaon separation is demonstrated.

The Impact Of Antenna And Rf System Characteristics On Mimo System Capacity, Matthew Leon Morris Jul 2005

The Impact Of Antenna And Rf System Characteristics On Mimo System Capacity, Matthew Leon Morris

Theses and Dissertations

The recent growth in demand for wireless services coupled with the limited spectrum available for these services has spawned new efforts to increase the spectral efficiency of wireless links. Recent research has shown that in multipath propagation environments, the spatial characteristics of the propagation channel can be exploited to increase spectral efficiency through the use of multiple antennas at the transmitting and receiving nodes. Such multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems show promise for dramatic performance gains over their single-antenna counterparts. However, MIMO system performance is influenced by many different factors. Antenna array configuration directly contributes to MIMO system performance. The ability …

The proliferation of computational resources and data networks has enabled the conception and solution of information management problems of an unprecedented scale. These technologies expose vulnerabilities that may be exploited through happenstance or design. The engineering problems encountered in the design of networked data systems and software are familiar in the controls community: resource allocation and management, distributed decision-making, time-delay systems, discrete-event and hybrid systems analysis and design, detection and identification, stability, robustness and reliability, and large-scale systems.

Towards Gaussian Multi-Robot Slam For Underwater Robotics, Dave Kroetsch, Christopher M. Clark Jul 2005

Towards Gaussian Multi-Robot Slam For Underwater Robotics, Dave Kroetsch, Christopher M. Clark

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper presents initial steps towards developing autonomous navigation capabilities for cooperating underwater robots. Specifically, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, or SLAM, capabilities are investigated for a group of micro vehicles each equipped with a single downward facing camera and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). To verify the approach, simulations of the multi-robot SLAM running in a 3D environment were conducted, where vehicles in close proximity of one another exchange maps to improve localization.
