The Open Navigation Surface Project, Brian R. Calder, Shannon Byrne, Bill Lamey, Rick T. Brennan, James D. Case, David Fabre, Barry Gallagher, R Wade Ladner, Friedhelm Moggert, Mark Paton

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Many hydrographic and oceanographic agencies have moved or are moving towards gridded bathymetric products. However, there is no accepted format to allow these grids to be exchanged while maintaining data and metadata integrity. This paper describes the Open Navigation Surface (ONS) Project, which aims to fill this gap. The ONS Project is an open-source software project designed to provide a freely available, portable source-code library to encapsulate gridded bathymetric surfaces with associated uncertainty values. The data file format is called a Bathymetric Attributed Grid (BAG). The BAG is developed and maintained by the ONS Working Group (ONSWG), and the source …

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

The Internet has become an essential part of normal operations of both public and private sectors. Many security issues are not addressed in the original Internet design, and security now has become a large concern for networking research and study. There is an imperative need to have an simulation environment that can be used to help study security-related research problems. In the thesis we present our effort to build such an environment: Real-time Immersive Network Simulation Environment (RINSE). RINSE features flexible configuration of models using various networking protocols and real-time user interaction. We also present the Estimate Next Infection (ENI) …

Performance Analysis Of Iris Based Recognition System At The Matching Score Level, Manasi V. Ketkar Aug 2005

Performance Analysis Of Iris Based Recognition System At The Matching Score Level, Manasi V. Ketkar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over the past three years, iris based personal identification has gained considerable attention both from research groups and government organizations. Public acceptance of this biometric grew substantially too. Modern cameras used for iris acquisition are less intrusive compared to earlier iris scanning devices and public awareness of system reliability is slowly developing. A typical iris system consists of four major subsystems: (i) image acquisition, (ii) preprocessing, (iii) encoding, (iv) decision making. Most current research is focused on redesigning preprocessing and encoding techniques for iris systems. However, a framework for comprehensive analysis of iris recognition systems or a study on how …

Cryptography Export Controls - Canada's Dichotomous Cryptography Policy, Paul Bates Aug 2005

Cryptography Export Controls - Canada's Dichotomous Cryptography Policy, Paul Bates

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

The effort to erect strong legal barriers to trans-national distribution of cryptography has significant gaps because strong cryptography can be obtained and used within Canada without legal restrictions. This paper advocates that Canada should exercise its discretion under the WA to diminish, not fortify, the restrictions of the export control regime.

Knowledge Representation, Organization, And Formalization For Simulation Modeling Of Discrete Manufacturing System, Jung Hung Ma

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Simulation is an useful tool that helps managers making decision by designing models for real systems. It helps companies to study behaviors of real systems hy analyzing computer models and improve the systems based on the experiments' results. However, cross-domain knowledge requirement and lack of tools facilitate modeling are the main reasons that make industries hesitate to use simulation to assist making decision. This research is an attempt to develop robust knowledge representations for discrete manufacturing system and conceptual simulation model. A modeling methodology was proposed to utilize these knowledge representations (KRs) for developing conceptual simulation models from application domain …

Religious Schools: For Spirit, (F)Or Nation, Lily Kong Aug 2005

Religious Schools: For Spirit, (F)Or Nation, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper I draw attention to the study of 'unofficially sacred' sites in geographies of religion, which provide significant insights into the construction of religious identity and community, and the intersections of sacred and secular. I show that such sites deserve as much attention as places of worship (the more conventional focus in the geographical study of religion) in our understanding of the place of religion in contemporary urban society. In particular, using the case of Islamic religious schools in Singapore, I examine how Muslim identities and community are negotiated within multicultural and multireligious contexts, and particularly within one …

Simultaneous Determination Of Dissolved Organic Carbon And Total Dissolved Nitrogen On A Coupled High-Temperature Combustion Total Organic Carbon-Nitrogen Chemiluminescence Detection (Htc Toc-Ncd) System, X Pan, R Sanders, Ad Tappin, Pj Worsfold, Ep Achterberg

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The marine biogeochemistries of carbon and nitrogen have come under increased scrutiny because of their close involvement in climate change and coastal eutrophication. Recent studies have shown that the high-temperature combustion (HTC) technique is suitable for routine analyses of dissolved organic matter due to its good oxidation efficiency, high sensitivity, and precision. In our laboratory, a coupled HTC TOC-NCD system with a sample changer was used for the automated and simultaneous determination of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) in seawater samples. TOC control software was used for TOC instrument control, DOC data acquisition, and data analysis. …

Complete Two-Loop Correction To The Bound-Electron Factor, Krzysztof Pachucki, Andrzej Czarnecki, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Vladimir A. Yerokhin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Within a systematic approach based on dimensionally regularized nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics, we derive a complete result for the two-loop correction to order ( α/ π )2 ( Zα )4 for the g factor of an electron bound in an nS state of a hydrogenlike ion. The results obtained significantly improve the accuracy of the theoretical predictions for the hydrogenlike carbon and oxygen ions and influence the value of the electron mass inferred from g-factor measurements. Autoionization Of He Atoms By Partially Stripped Ion Impact, Sebastian Otranto, Ronald E. Olson Aug 2005

Autoionization Of He Atoms By Partially Stripped Ion Impact, Sebastian Otranto, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study of the autoionization process induced by partially stripped ion impact is performed. Electron spectra in momentum space are predicted within a classical model for partially stripped ions. The results are compared with those obtained for pure Coulomb-like projectiles. A quantum-mechanical extension of the Barrachina-Macek model is proposed for partially stripped projectiles. Structure on the electron angular distribution arising in quantum and classical treatments is identified and compared. The presence of rainbow scattering interference is observed in the binary ring profile of the outgoing autoionized electrons for positive-ion impact.

Entropy-Based 2d Image Dissimilarity Measure, Meng-Hung Wu Aug 2005

Entropy-Based 2d Image Dissimilarity Measure, Meng-Hung Wu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Traditional histogram or statistics based 2D image similarity/dissimilarity metrics fail to handle conjugate pair of black and white images, due to the lack of spatial information in the measurement. Recently proposed Compression-based Dissimilarity Measure (CDM) [1] based on the concept of Kolmogorov complexity has provided a different paradise for similarity measurement. However, without a clear definition how to “concatenate” two 2D images, CDM has difficulties to directly apply with 2D images. In this thesis, an entropy -based 2D image dissimilarity measure is proposed within the same Kolmogorov complexity paradise. The spatial relationship between images is embedded in our metric, and …

Are Female Television News Anchors Still Judged By Their Appearance: A Study Of Gender Bias In Relation To Female Television News Anchors And Their Perception Of Age And Appearance Discrimination, Dottie M. Barnes Aug 2005

Are Female Television News Anchors Still Judged By Their Appearance: A Study Of Gender Bias In Relation To Female Television News Anchors And Their Perception Of Age And Appearance Discrimination, Dottie M. Barnes

Masters Theses

Are Female Television News Reporters Still Judged by Their Appearance Many female television news anchors and reporters believe the emphasis placed on physical appearance in the 1980s and 1990s exists in the same magnitude today. As of 1998, women comprised more than one-third of the television news workforce in the United States and half of all television news reporters and anchors. According to testimonials from female news anchors, women continue to feel pressured to look young and attractive. Studies show female anchors believe they have overcome some of the gender bias encountered in the 1980s and early 1990s. A 2005 …

Selective Breeding For High Endurance Running Increases Hindlimb Symmetry, Theodore Garland Jr., Patricia W. Freeman Aug 2005

Selective Breeding For High Endurance Running Increases Hindlimb Symmetry, Theodore Garland Jr., Patricia W. Freeman

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Comparative studies provide correlational evidence of morphological adaptations for high locomotor performance, such as the classical indicators of cursoriality in mammals, long limbs and high metatarsal/femur ratios. More recently, enlarged femoral condyles have been suggested as an adaptation for high endurance running in the genus Homo. Asymmetry of locomotor appendages should adversely affect locomotor abilities, but this has not been studied in a rigorous evolutionary context. We used experimental evolution to test for morphological adaptations associated with high voluntary wheel running in selectively bred lines of mice. Surprisingly, the classical indicators of cursoriality had not evolved in concert with …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation is a collection of papers that focus on the effects of school choice in the education market. The first chapter introduces the concept of school choice and discusses the arguments both for and against its implementation into public education. In addition, this chapter outlines the research agenda for this dissertation. Chapter 2 empirically measures the spillover benefits created by K-12 public education and finds that they are not Pareto-relevant at the margin. Given the results, this chapter also examines the role of school choice in the market for K-12 public education. Chapter 3 provides a brief history of …

Applications Of The Covering Property Axiom, Andres Millan Millan Aug 2005

Applications Of The Covering Property Axiom, Andres Millan Millan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this work is two-fold. First, we present some consequences of the Covering Property Axiom CPA of Ciesielski and Pawlikowski which captures the combinatorial core of the Sacks' model of the set theory. Second, we discuss the assumptions in the formulation of different versions of CPA.;As our first application of CPA we prove that under the version CPAgamecube of CPA there are uncountable strong gamma-sets on R . It is known that Martin's Axiom (MA) implies the existence of a strong gamma-set on R . Our result is interesting since that CPAgamecube implies the negation of MA.;Next, we …

The Role Of Reinforcement Rate On Fluency, Vennessa L. Walker Aug 2005

The Role Of Reinforcement Rate On Fluency, Vennessa L. Walker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Building skills to high rates and accuracy has been purported to result in fluency, a set of behavioral outcomes identified as retention, endurance, application, problem solving, and stability (REAPS). These outcomes require that the skills persist under changing environmental conditions, and may be conceptualized as examples of resistance to change. As such reinforcement rate should be the critical factor. To test this conceptualization twelve subjects were trained on 5 algebra skills to specified rate and accuracy criteria. Feedback consisting of points, knowledge of results, and corrective feedback was delivered either every 1 or 5 minutes. Stability, application, and problem-solving were …

The Hyperspace Graph Of Connected Subgraphs, Likin C. Simon Romero Aug 2005

The Hyperspace Graph Of Connected Subgraphs, Likin C. Simon Romero

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Given a connected graph G, the hyperspace graph of connected subgraphs C (G) is defined. The graph C (G) is such that every vertex represents a connected subgraph of G. It is shown that every connected graph G has a unique graph C (G). A characterization of a path, a cycle and the 3-star by their corresponding hyperspace graphs of connected subgraphs is shown. A special geometric representation R (G) of C (G) in an euclidean space is presented. A set P (G) is constructed based on R (G). When G is a topological tree, P (G) and the hyperspace …

Mesh Generation For Voxel -Based Objects, Hanzhou Zhang Aug 2005

Mesh Generation For Voxel -Based Objects, Hanzhou Zhang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A new physically-based approach to unstructured mesh generation via Monte-Carlo simulation is proposed. Geometrical objects to be meshed are represented by systems of interacting particles with a given interaction potential. A new way of distributing nodes in complex domains is proposed based on a concept of dynamic equilibrium ensemble, which represents a liquid state of matter. The algorithm is simple, numerically stable and produces uniform node distributions in domains of complex geometries and different dimensions. Well-shaped triangles or tetrahedra can be created by connecting a set of uniformly-spaced nodes. The proposed method has many advantages and potential applications.;The new method …

Thomson Scattering And Ponderomotive Intermodulation Within Standing Laser Beat Waves In Plasma, Scott Sepke, Y.Y. Lau, James Paul Holloway, Donald P. Umstadter Aug 2005

Thomson Scattering And Ponderomotive Intermodulation Within Standing Laser Beat Waves In Plasma, Scott Sepke, Y.Y. Lau, James Paul Holloway, Donald P. Umstadter

Donald Umstadter Publications

Electrons in a standing electromagnetic wave—an optical lattice—tend to oscillate due to the quiver and ponderomotive potentials. For sufficiently intense laser fields (lλ2≤5×1017 W cm-2 µm2) and in plasmas with sufficiently low electron densities (n≤1018 cm-3), these oscillations can occur faster than the plasma can respond. This paper shows that these oscillations result in Thomson scattering of light at both the laser and ponderomotive bounce frequencies and their harmonics as well as at mixtures of these frequencies. We term this mixing ponderomotive intermodulation. Here, the case of counterpropagating …

Valuing Wildfire Risk Mitigation In Kyle Canyon, Nevada, James P. O'Brien Aug 2005

Valuing Wildfire Risk Mitigation In Kyle Canyon, Nevada, James P. O'Brien

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The federal government lists Kyle Canyon, Nevada, as an at-risk wildland-urban interface community. Stakeholders' attitudes and preferences about wildfires and mitigation options were assessed through a survey. 541 surveys were sent and 107 returned. More than a majority of stakeholders report the chances of wildfire occurrence as very likely. Stakeholders demonstrate consensus in reporting high concern about wildfire potential for Kyle Canyon, Nevada. Fire fighters assign the greatest responsibility for mitigating wildfire risks to Clark County, Nevada, and the federal government, while resident property owners do not assign responsibility consistently to any particular group. Trimming is the most favored mitigation …

Self-Organization Of Spatial Solitons, Martin Centurion, Ye Pu, Demetri Psaltis Aug 2005

Self-Organization Of Spatial Solitons, Martin Centurion, Ye Pu, Demetri Psaltis

Martin Centurion Publications

We present experimental results on the transverse modulation instability of an elliptical beam propagating in a bulk nonlinear Kerr medium, and the formation and self-organization of spatial solitons. We have observed the emergence of order, self organization and a transition to an unstable state. Order emerges through the formation of spatial solitons in a periodic array. If the initial period of the array is unstable the solitons will tend to self-organize into a larger (more stable) period. Finally the system transitions to a disordered state where most of the solitons disappear and the beam profile becomes unstable to small changes …

Manifestation Of A Ferroelectric Phase Transition, A. R. Geivandov, S.G. Yudin, V.M. Fridkin, Stephen Ducharme Aug 2005

Manifestation Of A Ferroelectric Phase Transition, A. R. Geivandov, S.G. Yudin, V.M. Fridkin, Stephen Ducharme

Stephen Ducharme Publications

Temperature dependences of the dielectric properties of ultrathin polyvinylidene fluoride films prepared using the Langmuir-Blodgett method were studied by linear and nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy. It is shown that ultrathin Langmuir films of polyvinylidene fluoride exhibit a manifestation of a first-order ferroelectric phase transition, which can be assigned to the interaction between the spontaneous polarization and the surfaces bounding the film. As the film thickness increases, the effect of the surfaces decreases and the ferroelectric phase transition shifts to high temperatures to vanish altogether when the temperature region of the transition rises above the melting point.

Dissociative Electron Attachment To Uracil Deuterated At The N1 And N3 Positions, A. M. Scheer, C. Silvernail, John A. Belot Jr., Gordon A. Gallup, Paul Burrow Aug 2005

Dissociative Electron Attachment To Uracil Deuterated At The N1 And N3 Positions, A. M. Scheer, C. Silvernail, John A. Belot Jr., Gordon A. Gallup, Paul Burrow

Paul Burrow Publications

Deuteration at the nitrogen sites of uracil produces a striking change in the dissociative attachment cross-section at electron energies below 3 eV. In particular, sharp structures observed in uracil are absent or too small to observe. This result, as well as theoretical modeling, supports the earlier assignment of the sharp structure to vibrational Feshbach resonances that decay by tunneling of the N1 hydrogen atom through the barrier created by the avoided crossing of the dipole bound anion potential surface by that of the lowest 2Σ valence anion state.

A Link Bundled Auxiliary Graph Model For Constrained Dynamic Traffic Grooming In Wdm Mesh Networks, Wang Yao, Byrav Ramamurthy Aug 2005

A Link Bundled Auxiliary Graph Model For Constrained Dynamic Traffic Grooming In Wdm Mesh Networks, Wang Yao, Byrav Ramamurthy

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the two-layer dynamic traffic grooming problem in wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) mesh optical networks subject to resource constraints and the generalized wavelength continuity (GWC) constraint. The GWC constraint is a relaxed wavelength continuity constraint which incorporates various kinds of wavelength conversion capabilities that exist in optical networks. As an improvement over the existing layered auxiliary graph (layered-AG) approach which represents each wavelength separately in the auxiliary graph, we introduce a largely simplified link bundled auxiliary graph (LBAG) model and propose the SAG-LB method to find paths and assign wavelengths for new lightpaths subject to the GWC constraint. We propose the …

Stochastic Modeling Of The Permeability Of Randomly Generated Porous Media, Yusong Li, Eugene Leboeuf, P. K. Basu, Sankaran Mahadevan Aug 2005

Stochastic Modeling Of The Permeability Of Randomly Generated Porous Media, Yusong Li, Eugene Leboeuf, P. K. Basu, Sankaran Mahadevan

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Permeability of porous media in subsurface environments is subject to potentially large uncertainties due to the heterogeneity of natural systems. In this study, a first-order reliability method (FORM) is combined with a lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to estimate the permeability of randomly generated porous media. The proposed procedure provides an increased ease of addressing complex pore structures by employing LBM to model fluid flow, while inheriting the computational efficiency from FORM. Macroscale- equivalent permeability can thus be estimated with significantly reduced computational efforts, while maintaining a connection to the complex microscale fluid dynamics within a pore structure environment. Implemented on …
