Is First J102347.6+003841 Really A Cataclysmic Binary?, John R. Thorstensen, Eve Armstrong

Dartmouth Scholarship

The radio source FIRST J102347.6+003841 was presented as the first radio-selected cataclysmic variable star. In the discovery paper, Bond et al. (2002) show a spectrum consistent with a magnetic AM Her–type system, or polar, featuring strong Balmer lines, He I and He II emission lines, and a light curve with rapid, irregular flickering. In contrast, Woudt, Warner, and Pretorius found a smoothly varying light curve with a period near 4.75 hr and one minimum per orbit, indicating that the state of the system had changed dramatically. We present time-resolved spectra showing a superficially normal, mid-G type photosphere, with no detectable …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polymer Nanofibers Produced By Emulsion Polymerization, Suxiang Wei Aug 2005

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polymer Nanofibers Produced By Emulsion Polymerization, Suxiang Wei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Surfactants in aqueous media can form a variety of microstructures such as micelles of various geometries, emulsions, microemulsions and vesicles. Cetyltrimethylammonium p-toluene sulfate (CTAT) has been found to cause large increases in solution viscosity in certain concentration ranges. This phenomenon has been ascribed to the formation of wormlike micelles. Using this, we have synthesized polystyrene nanofibers by emulsion polymerization in wormlike CTAT admicelles in the presence of added sodium chloride (NaCl). Polystyrene nanofibers approximately 3 µm in length and 20~ 60 nanometers in width, were created by emulsion polymerization at 50°C for ten hours using 2, 2’-azobis-isobutyrInitrile initiator. The impact …

Domain-Wall Magnetoresistance Of Co Nanowires, Renat F. Sabirianov, Ashok K. Solanki, J. D. Burton, Sitaram S. Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal Aug 2005

Domain-Wall Magnetoresistance Of Co Nanowires, Renat F. Sabirianov, Ashok K. Solanki, J. D. Burton, Sitaram S. Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Physics Faculty Publications

Using density functional theory implemented within a tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method we perform calculations of electronic, magnetic, and transport properties of ferromagnetic free-standing fcc Co wires with diameters up to 1.5 nm. We show that finite-size effects play an important role in these nanowires resulting in oscillatory behavior of electronic charge and the magnetization as a function of the wire thickness, and a nonmonotonic behavior of spin-dependent quantized conductance. We calculate the magnetoresistance (MR) of a domain wall (DW) modeled by a spin-spiral region of finite width sandwiched between two semi-infinite Co wire leads. We find that the DW …

Nonlinear Finite Element Model Analysis Of Human Accommodation Lens, Tri Le Aug 2005

Nonlinear Finite Element Model Analysis Of Human Accommodation Lens, Tri Le

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

The crystalline human lens is modeled by using the finite element software, ABAQUS/CAE Version 6.5-1 as an axisymmetric shell to study the optical power and displacement of anterior and posterior poles induced due to zonule traction. Several different element types were tested to obtain the optimum mesh. These elements were three and six-noded triangular hybrid and four-noded quadrilateral hybrid for modeling of the cortex and nucleus. Constant strain triangular and regular quadrilateral elements were examined for modeling the capsule. One dimensional two degree of freedom spring elements were used to model the anterior, posterior, and equatorial zonules. Five different lens …

How Does Information Technology Effect Development? Integrating Theory And Practice Into A Process Model, Sajda Qureshi Aug 2005

How Does Information Technology Effect Development? Integrating Theory And Practice Into A Process Model, Sajda Qureshi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

The concept of development suggests that countries and regions grow to become self-sustaining partners in what is being called the global economy. In more recent years this concept has been synonymous with the emergence of an “information society” whose wheels are oiled by information sharing and the application of knowledge. Some international agencies even propose that information and communications technologies enable development to be achieved more effectively and efficiently. While success stories abound, there is a recognition that not all investments in information technology bring about growth or economic development. So the question remains: how does information technology effect development? …

Design Of A Reconfigurable State Transition Algorithm For Fuzzy Automata, Paolo A. Tamayo Aug 2005

Design Of A Reconfigurable State Transition Algorithm For Fuzzy Automata, Paolo A. Tamayo

Masters Theses

An Ontological Controller, a type of supervisory controller used for complex industrial systems, is usually characterized by a large global state set. Monitoring the global state set of these systems is impractical when the desired goal path is chosen since the decision on the next state depends only on a small section of the total state space. The approach is to operate only in a small moving window of the large state transition path. The Hybrid Fuzzy-Boolean Finite State Machine (HFB-FSM) is part of the solution to implement this scheme. The HFB-FSM models the state graph along with plant data …

Influence Of Uncorrelated Defects On The Vortex Phase Diagram In Yba2Cu3O7-6 Superconducting System, Lucian M. Undreiu Aug 2005

Influence Of Uncorrelated Defects On The Vortex Phase Diagram In Yba2Cu3O7-6 Superconducting System, Lucian M. Undreiu

Dissertations

The goal of our work is to gain more insight into the vortex dynamics in YBa2Cu307-8 single crystals with point defects induced by 9MeV proton irradiation. The position of the critical points from the first order melting transition line can be shifted in a controlled manner with the induced disorder. In order to accomplish a comparative study, different crystals and irradiation doses were used. The results were correlated using both electrical transport and ac specific heat measurements. Special attention was given to investigating the nature of the vortex state below the lower critical point o …

Bioluminescence Intensity Modeling And Sampling Strategy Optimization, I. Shulman, D.J. Mcgillicuddy Jr., M.A. Moline, S.H.D. Haddock, J.C. Kindle, D. Nechaev

Faculty Publications

The focus of this paper is on the development of methodology for short-term (1-3 days) oceanic bioluminescence (BL) predictions and the optimization of spatial and temporal bioluminescence sampling strategies. The approach is based on predictions of bioluminescence with an advection-diffusion-reaction (tracer) model with velocities and diffusivities from a circulation model. In previous research, it was shown that short-term changes in some of the salient features in coastal bioluminescence can be explained and predicted by using this approach. At the same time, it was demonstrated that optimization of bioluminescence sampling prior to the forecast is critical for successful short-term BL predictions …

Evaluating The Operative Mechanisms Underlying The High-Probability Request Sequence, Carrie L. Coleman Aug 2005

Evaluating The Operative Mechanisms Underlying The High-Probability Request Sequence, Carrie L. Coleman

Dissertations

Failure to comply with requests in educational settings interferes with the learning process. The high-probability request sequence has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for noncompliance. However, the operative mechanisms underlying this treatment remain unknown. This study sought to further elucidate high-p behavior change mechanisms through the manipulation of reinforcement and response rate variables. The purpose was to determine whether increases in compliance to low-probability requests could be obtained with either the high-p sequence or with the delivery of preferred stimuli on a response-independent basis. Math problems served as high-p and low-p requests, and data were collected on compliance …

Natural Image Statistics For Digital Image Forensics, Siwei Lyu Aug 2005

Natural Image Statistics For Digital Image Forensics, Siwei Lyu

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

We describe a set of natural image statistics that are built upon two multi-scale image decompositions, the quadrature mirror filter pyramid decomposition and the local angular harmonic decomposition. These image statistics consist of first- and higher-order statistics that capture certain statistical regularities of natural images. We propose to apply these image statistics, together with classification techniques, to three problems in digital image forensics: (1) differentiating photographic images from computer-generated photorealistic images, (2) generic steganalysis; (3) rebroadcast image detection. We also apply these image statistics to the traditional art authentication for forgery detection and identification of artists in an art work. …

Construction Of M^4 Run Linear Graphs By Finite Geometries, Chung Yi Suen Aug 2005

Construction Of M^4 Run Linear Graphs By Finite Geometries, Chung Yi Suen

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Finite projective geometries are used to obtain some series of Taguchi's linear graphs involving m^4 runs, where m is a prime or a prime power. The concept of maximal linear graph is introduced to reduce the number of nonisomorphic linear graphs. Some 81-run maximal linear graphs are given as examples. A table of 27 nonisomorphic 16-run maximal linear graphs, which is believed to be complete, is provided.

Initial Borehole Accelerometer Array Observations Near The North Portal Of The Esf, David Von Seggern, James N. Brune, Joe Litehiser, Amy J. Smiecinski

Publications (YM)

This report addresses observed ground motions at the site of the proposed surface facilities associated with the designated repository for high-level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. In 2003 an accelerometer array was installed at three boreholes on the pad of the north portal of the ESF (Exploratory Studies Facility) at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, by the Nevada Seismological Laboratory (NSL). These boreholes, roughly 150 m apart and initially used for extensive geological and geophysical surveys, were ideal locations to measure the subsurface ground motions at the proposed site of surface facilities such as the Waste Handling Building. Such measurements will …

Mass Loading Measurements In Amargosa Valley, John C. Sagebiel, Alan W. Gertler, Amy J. Smiecinski, David Shafer

Publications (YM)

This work will be conducted under Task DRI-FI-001, “Mass Loading Measurements in Amargosa Valley.” The objective of this task is to measure, with known accuracy, the levels of atmospheric mass loading (mass concentration of suspended particulates) accompanying soil surface disturbing activities in Amargosa Valley. Mass loading is used in the biosphere model to calculate inhalation exposure for the human receptor, the maximally reasonably exposed individual (RMEI). The mass loading currently used in the biosphere model is based on literature data from the analog sites rather than on site-specific conditions. This work is subject to the Nevada System of Higher Education …

Harmonic Imaging Using A Mechanical Sector, B-Mode, Danna Gurari Aug 2005

Harmonic Imaging Using A Mechanical Sector, B-Mode, Danna Gurari

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

An ultrasound imaging system includes transmitting ultrasound waves into a human body, collecting the reflections, manipulating the reflections, and then displaying them on computer screen as a grayscale image. The standard approach for ultrasound imaging is to use the fundamental frequency from the reflected signal to form images. However, it has been shown that images generated using the harmonic content have improved resolution as well as reduced noise, resulting in clearer images. Although harmonic imaging has been shown to return improved images, this has never been shown with a B-mode, mechanical sector ultrasound system. In this thesis, we demonstrated such …

The Conservative's Dilemma: Traditional Institutions, Social Change, And Same-Sex Marriage, Amy L. Wax Aug 2005

The Conservative's Dilemma: Traditional Institutions, Social Change, And Same-Sex Marriage, Amy L. Wax

San Diego Law Review

Thus far, there has been no coherent, secular elucidation of the opposition to same-sex marriage. This article attempts to develop a consistent position by applying the traditionalist and rationalist views of Edmund Burke and Michael Oakeshott to the same-sex marriage debate, while questioning whether traditional marriage should be changed to include same-sex unions. Burke and Oakeshott represent the conservative approach that advocates an adherence to tradition in the face of change. Through developing this conservative approach, this article seeks a heuristic, in the form of legislative change reflecting a majority view, for when society should accept change. Although an answer …

Faculty Publications

Relative charge transfer cross section measurements for the excited state Rb (4d) with 7 keV Na+ is reported. The specific channels reported as Na+ + Rb (4d5/2) → Na (nl) + Rb+, where the dominant transfer cross sections channels were nl = 3d and 4s. Using a combination of a magneto-optical trap and recoil ion momentum spectroscopy (MOTRIMS methodology), the cross sections were measured relative to the previously studied Na+ + Rb (5s, 5p) systems at the same collision energy.

A Procedure For Imposing A Dichotomous Incidence Variable On The Weighting Of Items In A Dual Scaling Analysis Of Successive-Categories (Rating) Data, Adam Wyse Aug 2005

A Procedure For Imposing A Dichotomous Incidence Variable On The Weighting Of Items In A Dual Scaling Analysis Of Successive-Categories (Rating) Data, Adam Wyse

Theses

Demographic information collected on surveys is often of certain interest to those who use these surveys to measure customer satisfaction or do market research. This thesis presents a method for imposing a dichotomous incidence variable, possibly a demographic variable, on the weighting of items in a set of successive-categories (rating) data using dual scaling. The idea is to augment the matrix of rating data with the "criterion variable" containing the dichotomous information so that this item determines one of the initial solutions of the dual scaling analysis. In conjunction with the augmentation of the criterion item, the original data are …

The Effects Of Wireless, Mobile Computing On Course Performance: A Course Comparison And Participant Perception Analysis, Claver P. Hategekimana

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Educational institutions recognize that technology is an increasingly important factor in today's world as a skill and as a facilitator for learning. ln response, Dakota State University introduced the wireless, mobile computing initiative (WMCI) that made tablet personal computers (Tablet PCs) mandatory learning tools for both instructors and students. However, little is known about the effect of this technology on course performance. First, this study focuses on quantitative analysis to verify the relationship between student performance and Tablet PC. To achieve this goal, we statistically compared learning outcomes before and after the integration of tablets. The comparison showed that one …

Paretian Intergenerational Discounting, David A. Weisbach, Dexter Samida Aug 2005

Paretian Intergenerational Discounting, David A. Weisbach, Dexter Samida

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper argues that discounting costs and benefits of projects for the opportunity costs of capital Pareto dominates decision criteria that do not discount. It considers and rejects several objections to the Pareto dominance argument, including the problem of making compensating transfers for the costs and benefits of projects and whether taking opportunity costs into account is different than discounting. It also argues that discounting future costs and benefits of projects does not under-value future generations.

Street Trees In The Urban Forest Canopy: Portland, Oregon, Joseph Poracsky, David Banis Aug 2005

Street Trees In The Urban Forest Canopy: Portland, Oregon, Joseph Poracsky, David Banis

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Attempts to identify the contribution of street trees to the overall urban forest of a city have been rare and lack consensus on how to measure that contribution – percentage of trees, percentage of canopy cover, or percentage of leaf area. The actual numeric values presented in the literature also vary over a broad range and often are based on estimates, extrapolations from aggregated data, or simply stated with no empirical data referenced. This study was undertaken to evaluate the contribution of street trees to canopy in Portland, Oregon. The study involved both visual and digital analysis of multi-band aerial …
