Dirac-Kähler Fermions And Exact Lattice Supersymmetry, Simon Catterall Oct 2005

Dirac-Kähler Fermions And Exact Lattice Supersymmetry, Simon Catterall

Physics - All Scholarship

We discuss a new approach to putting supersymmetric theories on the lattice. The basic idea is to start from a {\it twisted} formulation of the underlying supersymmetric theory in which the fermions are represented as grassmann valued antisymmetric tensor fields. The original supersymmetry algebra is replaced by a twisted algebra which contains a scalar nilpotent supercharge Q. Furthermore the action of the theory can then be written as the Q-variation of some function. The case of {\cal N}=2 super Yang-Mills theory in two dimensions is discussed in some detail. We then present our proposal for discretizing this theory and derive …

Wavelet Based Feature Extraction And Dimension Reduction For The Classification Of Human Cardiac Electrogram Depolarization Waveforms, Christopher S. De Voir Oct 2005

Wavelet Based Feature Extraction And Dimension Reduction For The Classification Of Human Cardiac Electrogram Depolarization Waveforms, Christopher S. De Voir

Dissertations and Theses

An essential task for a pacemaker or implantable defibrillator is the accurate identification of rhythm categories so that the correct electrotherapy can be administered. Because some rhythms cause a rapid dangerous drop in cardiac output, it is necessary to categorize depolarization waveforms on a beat-to-beat basis to accomplish rhythm classification as rapidly as possible. In this thesis, a depolarization waveform classifier based on the Lifting Line Wavelet Transform is described. It overcomes problems in existing rate-based event classifiers; namely, (1) they are insensitive to the conduction path of the heart rhythm and (2) they are not robust to pseudo-events. The …

Digital Wars -- Legal Battles And Economic Bottlenecks In The Digital Information Industries, Curt A. Hessler Oct 2005

Digital Wars -- Legal Battles And Economic Bottlenecks In The Digital Information Industries, Curt A. Hessler

ExpressO

The Digital Age has spawned major legal battles over the fundamental principles of intellectual property law and antitrust law. These diverse struggles can best be analyzed using the basic norm of "value added" from neo-classical normative economics. This analysis suggests that current intellectual property doctirnes provide excessive protection and current antitrust doctrines remain awkward in dealing with the cross-market leveraging of monopoly power in the presence of "natural monopolies" created by network effects.

Semiconductor Nanowire Laser And Nanowire Waveguide Electro-Optic Modulators, Andrew B. Greytak, Carl J. Barrelet, Yat Li, Charles M. Lieber Oct 2005

Semiconductor Nanowire Laser And Nanowire Waveguide Electro-Optic Modulators, Andrew B. Greytak, Carl J. Barrelet, Yat Li, Charles M. Lieber

Faculty Publications

Electric field modulation of visible and ultraviolet nanoscale lasers consisting of single CdS or GaN nanowires has been achieved using integrated, microfabricated electrodes. Modulation of laser emission intensity is achieved with no detectable change in the laser wavelength. The devices can also be operated below the lasing threshold to modulate the intensity of light propagating within the nanowire waveguide. Studies of the electric field dependence in devices of varied geometry indicate that modulation is due to an electroabsorption mechanism. These findings expand opportunities for multicolor, nanowire-based photonic devices and circuits.

Information As A Value Concept, Thomas Weissinger Oct 2005

Information As A Value Concept, Thomas Weissinger

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Philosophically, materialists and idealists understand the world differently. In materialist theory information directly represents the natural world, whereas idealism understands it to be the very structure of thought. Some of the problems arising between information theory and the actual practice of librarianship are due to mixing concepts from incompatible theories. The concept of information favored by materialist theories is not interchangeable with the concepts preferred by idealists and critical theorists. Materialism overemphasizes the empirical features of information, while giving short shrift to the possibility that information can be both factual and evaluative. Consequently, this leads to theories of information which …

Grain Boundary Scars On Spherical Crystals, Mark Bowick, Thomas Einert, Peter Lipowsky, Jorg Schilling, Andreas R. Bausch Oct 2005

Grain Boundary Scars On Spherical Crystals, Mark Bowick, Thomas Einert, Peter Lipowsky, Jorg Schilling, Andreas R. Bausch

Physics - All Scholarship

We present an experimental system suitable for producing spherical crystals and for observing the distribution of lattice defects (disclinations and dislocations) on a significant fraction (50%) of the sphere. The introduction of fluorescently labeled particles enables us to determine the location and orientation of grain boundary scars. We find that the total number of scars and the number of excess dislocations per scar agree with theoretical predictions and that the geometrical centers of the scars are roughly positioned at the vertices of an icosahedron.

Isolation And Component Structure In Spaces Of Composition Operators, Christopher Hammond, Barbara D. Maccluer Oct 2005

Isolation And Component Structure In Spaces Of Composition Operators, Christopher Hammond, Barbara D. Maccluer

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We establish a condition that guarantees isolation in the space of composition operators acting between H p (B N ) and H q (B N ), for 0 < p ≤ ∞, 0 < q < ∞, and N ≥ 1. This result will allow us, in certain cases where 0 < q < p ≤ ∞, completely to characterize the component structure of this space of operators.

Input Aggregation In Models Of Data Envelopment Analysis: A Statistical Test With An Application To Indian Manufacturing, Subhash C. Ray Oct 2005

Input Aggregation In Models Of Data Envelopment Analysis: A Statistical Test With An Application To Indian Manufacturing, Subhash C. Ray

Economics Working Papers

A problem frequently encountered in Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is that the total number of inputs and outputs included tend to be too many relative to the sample size. One way to counter this problem is to combine several inputs (or outputs) into (meaningful) aggregate variables reducing thereby the dimension of the input (or output) vector. A direct effect of input aggregation is to reduce the number of constraints. This, in its turn, alters the optimal value of the objective function. In this paper, we show how a statistical test proposed by Banker (1993) may be applied to test the …

Faculty-Librarian Collaboration To Teach Research Skills: Electronic Symbiosis, Navaz P. Bhavnagri, Veronica Bielat

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

This article discusses faculty-librarian collaboration to integrate technology in a course that focuses on teaching empirical research methodologies and library research skills to elementary and early childhood education graduate students. Vygotsky’s theory, standards in teacher education, and information literacy standards form the conceptual framework that supports this collaboration. The purpose and procedures of this collaboration, as well as student, faculty, and librarian outcomes, are discussed. This present collaboration on bibliographic instruction and the use of Blackboard courseware is framed within the context of past history of collaboration and future plans to expand this collaboration.

Is The Number Of Sick Persons In A Cohort Constant Over Time?, Paula Diehr, Ann Derleth, Anne Newman, Liming Cai

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Objectives: To estimate the number of persons in a cohort who are sick, over time.

Methods: We calculated the number of sick persons in the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS), a cohort study of older adults followed up to 14 years, using eight definitions of “healthy” and “sick”. We projected the number in each health state over time for a birth cohort.

Results: The number of sick persons in CHS was approximately constant for 14 years, for all definitions of “sick”. The estimated number of sick persons in the birth cohort was approximately constant from ages 55-75, after which it decreased. …
