Xtagger: A New Approach To Authoring Document-Centric Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar Jun 2005

Xtagger: A New Approach To Authoring Document-Centric Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The process of authoring document-centric XML documents in humanities disciplines is very different from the approach espoused by the standard XML editing software with the data-centric view of XML. Where data-centric XML is generated by first describing a tree structure of the encoding and then providing the content for the leaf elements, document-centric encodings start with content which is then marked up. In the paper we describe our approach to authoring document-centric XML documents and the tool, xTagger, originally developed for this purpose within the Electronic Boethius project, otherwise enhanced within the ARCHway project, an interdisciplinary project devoted to development …

Culture Brokering: A Case Study Resolving Conflict In A Health Care Setting, Katherine A. Baumgartner Jun 2005

Culture Brokering: A Case Study Resolving Conflict In A Health Care Setting, Katherine A. Baumgartner

Theses and Graduate Projects

This paper describes the application of a culture brokering model developed by Mary Ann Jezewski to a cultural conflict within a pediatric clinic. The purpose of the case study was to explore the usefulness of the culture brokering model as a tool in resolving conflict as well as a process to expand cross-cultural understanding and promote connectedness of the patient in the health care system. A practice model for the advanced practice nurse is discussed which combines the cultural brokering model and places it within the framework of Leininger's Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality. The cultural conflict in …

An Assessment Of Hospital-Sponsored Health Care For The Uninsured In Polk County/Des Moines, Iowa, Lea Nolan, Marsha Regenstein, Marisa A. Cox Jun 2005

An Assessment Of Hospital-Sponsored Health Care For The Uninsured In Polk County/Des Moines, Iowa, Lea Nolan, Marsha Regenstein, Marisa A. Cox

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Health care providers in Polk County are faced with increasing numbers of low-income, uninsured patients who do not have the resources to pay for their health care out of pocket. At the same time, state and local funding sources are limited, and are insufficient to ensure that these individuals have access to the health services that they require. Community leaders are extremely interested in developing information to understand the magnitude of the uninsured problem in Polk County and to identify health care delivery strategies to better serve this population. A Blue Ribbon Steering Committee was convened in October 2004 to …

The Judge As A Fly On The Wall: Interpretive Lessons From The Positive Political Theory Of Legislation, Daniel B. Rodriguez, Cheryl Boudreau, Arthur Lupia, Mathew Mccubbins Jun 2005

The Judge As A Fly On The Wall: Interpretive Lessons From The Positive Political Theory Of Legislation, Daniel B. Rodriguez, Cheryl Boudreau, Arthur Lupia, Mathew Mccubbins

University of San Diego Public Law and Legal Theory Research Paper Series

In the modern debate over statutory interpretation, scholars frequently talk past one another, arguing for one or another interpretive approach on the basis of competing, and frequently undertheorized, conceptions of legislative supremacy and political theory. For example, so-called new textualists insist that the plain meaning approach is compelled by the U.S. Constitution and rule of law values; by contrast, theorists counseling a more dynamic approach often reject the premise of legislative supremacy that is supposed by the textualist view. A key element missing, therefore, from the modern statutory interpretation debate is a conspicuous articulation of the positive and empirical premises …

Ireland's New Responsibility: Refugees Buy The Irish Another Round, Shae D. Armstrong Jun 2005

Ireland's New Responsibility: Refugees Buy The Irish Another Round, Shae D. Armstrong

ExpressO

Over the previous decade, Ireland's economic boom has attracted asylum seekers from around the globe to this small island nation. Ireland's economic explosion created growing pains for industrial sectors of the Irish economy. Ireland’s continued willingness to diversify its neighborhoods will promote even greater economic prosperity. Furthermore, refugees will satisfy several of the economic demands of Ireland’s massively growing economy. Asylum seekers granted refugee status in Ireland will satisfy present labor shortages in Ireland. Also, these refugees will allow Ireland to establish an economic partnership with non-EU countries that have a propensity to export asylum seekers.

A Perception Based, Domain Specific Expert System For Question-Answering Support, Raheel Ahmad, Shahram Rahimi Jun 2005

A Perception Based, Domain Specific Expert System For Question-Answering Support, Raheel Ahmad, Shahram Rahimi

Computer Science Publications

The ability to search has become an integral part of our interaction with technology. However, the current search technologies mostly use a keyword based searching mechanism, which does not have any deductive abilities. The recent introduction of the idea of Computing with Words, which can give deduction abilities to existing technologies, provides a new base for developing frameworks. This paper proposes implementation of a domain specific Fuzzy Expert System based on a question-answer system, which employs Computing with Words. In order to perform the translation of natural language sentences into a standard format, Probabilistic Context-Free Grammar is used.

The Resurrection (Of The Body) In The Fourth Gospel: A Key To Johannine Spirituality, Sandra Marie Schneiders Jun 2005

The Resurrection (Of The Body) In The Fourth Gospel: A Key To Johannine Spirituality, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

I last saw Raymond Brown a few weeks before he died. By strange coincidence our conversation on that day turned to death, its inevitability, its meaning for us personally and for our work, and what lay beyond that mysterious frontier. Ray told me he had been asked if, following the publication of his massive Death of the Messiah, he planned to write a work on the Resurrection. He had replied, "I prefer to research that topic face to face." It was such a quintessentially Raymond Brown remark, deep spirituality buried in a self-effacing bon mot. Little could either of us …

Stresses To The Safety Net: The Public Hospital Perspective, Marsha Regenstein, Jennifer Huang Jun 2005

Stresses To The Safety Net: The Public Hospital Perspective, Marsha Regenstein, Jennifer Huang

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Every year, more than 10 million people receive care from public hospitals and health systems – a complex and diverse set of providers that share a mission to deliver health services to individuals, regardless of insurance coverage or ability to pay. Together with federally funded health centers, free clinics, public health departments and scores of individual physicians and other health practitioners, public hospitals provide critical access points for the nation's uninsured population and form a vast patchwork of providers that is commonly referred to as the health care safety net. Despite their importance, there is no single or stable source …

Outcomes Of An Ethiopian Microfinance Program And Management Actions To Improve Services, Shannon Doocy, Dan Norell, Shimeles Teffera, Gilbert Burnham Jun 2005

Outcomes Of An Ethiopian Microfinance Program And Management Actions To Improve Services, Shannon Doocy, Dan Norell, Shimeles Teffera, Gilbert Burnham

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Management decision making in MFIs is becoming increasingly tied to collecting information about social performance. This paper examines the impact of participation in an Ethiopian microfinance program on indicators of socioeconomic status including wealth, income, and home or land ownership.A survey assessing these outcomes was conducted in May 2003 in two predominantly rural sites in Southern Ethiopia and included 819 households. The article discusses management decisions made as the result of survey findings about socioeconomic status and food security to increase retention rates and to facilitate client savings. Additionally, the management was prompted to increase the number of female clients …
