"I Knew There Was Something Wrong With That Paper": Scientific Rhetorical Styles And Scientific Misunderstandings, Carol Reeves

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This selection unpacks scientific prose and claim substantiation for Nobel Prize winner, Stan Prusiner, in the transmissible spongiform encephlopathies field (i.e., mad cow disease). Applying linguistic strategies such as M. A. K. Halliday's "favorite clause type," the author examines argumentative strategies in dense scientific prose both in bold and cautious rhetorical styles and invented lexical changes in new scientific development.

No Animals Were Harmed...: Protecting Chimpanzees From Cruelty Behind The Curtain, Lorraine L. Fischer Jan 2005

No Animals Were Harmed...: Protecting Chimpanzees From Cruelty Behind The Curtain, Lorraine L. Fischer

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Many people, interested in the way animals are treated in the entertainment industry, rely on the American Humane Association's end credit disclaimer, "No Animals Were Harmed During the Making of this Production" to quiet their concerns about animal mistreatment and to avoid supporting films or television programs that injure animals. However, the AHA's end credit disclaimer is misleading because it suggests that projects with the disclaimer are cruelty free. Even if a film or television show receives the "No Animals Were Harmed..." designation, chimpanzees cannot become "actors" and appear on the stage or screen without being subject to severe physical …

Differences In Affective Learning And Perceived Immediacy Of Instructor Between Traditional College Classrooms And Classrooms Incorporating Student Use Of Computer-Mediated Communication, Lori Zakel

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine whether community college students enrolled in Interpersonal Communication who utilize the technological aid of computer-mediated communication in the classroom have different perceptions of their affective learning and their instructor's immediacy than do students who do not utilize computer-mediated communication in the classroom. The methodology used to address the issue was a post test-only control group design, with students completing the affective learning scale, the nonverbal immediacy scale, and the verbal immediacy scale. Results showed no significant differences were found between the treatment and control groups on either immediacy scale (verbal or …

The "Comity" Of Empagran: The Supreme Court Decides That Foreign Competition Regulation Limits American Antitrust Jurisdiction Over International Cartels, Sam F. Halabi Jan 2005

The "Comity" Of Empagran: The Supreme Court Decides That Foreign Competition Regulation Limits American Antitrust Jurisdiction Over International Cartels, Sam F. Halabi

Faculty Publications

The equivocal language of the 1982 Foreign Trade Antitrust Improvements Act ("FTAIA") has led to several disputes concerning when victims of international price-fixing can bring suit under U.S. antitrust law. Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in E Hoffmann-La Roche, Ltd. v. Empagran S.A. ("Empagran") that the doctrine of "comity among nations" limited the reach of U.S. anti-trust law over foreign plaintiffs who claim injury in nations where other competition regulations exist. This article argues that Empagran misapplies the doctrine of comity. Part II traces the history of the FTAIA, which was passed to define the limits on participation by …

Autonomy And The Other: Andalusian Regionalism And Seville's Cigarrera, Nirmala Singh-Brinkman Jan 2005

Autonomy And The Other: Andalusian Regionalism And Seville's Cigarrera, Nirmala Singh-Brinkman

Decimonónica

In 1898 the Spanish Empire experienced the final stage of its collapse when it lost the last of its colonies: Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. A crisis within the Spanish nation ensued, prompting peripheral regions of the Iberian Peninsula to campaign actively for autonomy. Regionalist activists from Galicia, Valencia, the Basque provinces, Catalonia, and Andalusia interpreted the end of Spanish imperialism as Madrid's failure to let an empire of regional differences thrive—be they Cuban or Catalan. They considered that if Cuba could be “liberated” from Madrid's centralized rule, then Catalonia, for example, should also be granted independence (González Antón …

The Efficacy Of Parent-Facilitated Phonological Awareness Tutoring For Kindergartners At-Risk For Reading Difficulties, Michelle J. Giguere Jan 2005

The Efficacy Of Parent-Facilitated Phonological Awareness Tutoring For Kindergartners At-Risk For Reading Difficulties, Michelle J. Giguere

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the fall of 2004 Kindergarten students in a southwestern Ohio elementary school were screened for early literacy skills using the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS). Those parents whose children scored below the 20th percentile on initial sound fluency— determined to be at-risk for reading difficulties—were offered training on how to tutor their children. Parents (N=8) were taught games and activities from Phonemic Awareness in Young Children: A Classroom Curriculum by Marilyn Adams (1998). Those children considered at-risk whose parents chose not to participate formed the comparison group (N=7). The study used the logic of a multiple …

Stephen Dunn, Jayme Stayer Jan 2005

Stephen Dunn, Jayme Stayer

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

That Stephen Dunn'.s work is difficult to categorize may account for his slow but steady rise to recognition. After working himself out of his Imagist training, he eventually found his mature voice in a discursive, abstract, but highly accessible style. Dunn has forged his own way, writing lyric poems composed of an appealingly intimate voice and a restrained, if pulsating, emotional fabric.

The Global Cultural Commons After Cancun: Identity, Diversity And Citizenship, Daniel Drache, Marc D. Froese Jan 2005

The Global Cultural Commons After Cancun: Identity, Diversity And Citizenship, Daniel Drache, Marc D. Froese

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

The cultural politics of global trade is a new and unexplored terrain because the public domain of culture has long been associated with national sovereignty. States everywhere have invested heavily in national identity. But in an age of globalization, culture and sovereignty have become more complex propositions, subject to global pressures and national constraints. This paper argues three main points. First, new information technologies increasingly destabilize traditional private sector models for disseminating culture. At the same time, international legal rules have become more restrictive with respect to investment and national treatment, two areas at the heart of cultural policy. Second, …

Evolutionary Trajectories, Internet-Mediated Expression, And Language Education, Steven L. Thorne, J. Scott Payne

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article describes the evolution of communication technologies, accompanying transformations in everyday communicative activity, and pedagogical possibilities these tools support in second and foreign language (L2) settings. We begin with an overview of synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) and uses of the Internet to mediate intercultural communication for purposes of L2 learning. We then describe generational shifts in Internet technologies and their proliferation and uses, with the majority of our efforts focused on contemporary environments such as blogs, wikis, podcasting, device-agnostic forms of CMC, and advances in intelligent computer-assisted language learning (ICALL). Throughout, we engage in a discussion of praxeological fusions …

Violation Of Latino Civil Rights Resulting From Ins And Local Police's Use Of Race, Culture And Class Profiling: The Case Of The Chandler Roundup In Arizona, Mary Romero, Marwah Serag

Cleveland State Law Review

The case of the Chandler Roundup provides a unique window into law enforcement practices including the planning, staging and procedures employed in removing undocumented immigrants from a specific urban space. We begin with an overview of the Chandler Roundup and community protests resulting from the five-day immigration raid. This section provides a general outline of the five day raid, including incidents leading up to the joint operation, official investigations conducted and lawsuits filed. The basis of the lawsuits filed was that "individuals were stopped and interrogated by the Chandler Police Department based exclusively on the fact that their physical characteristics …

Classroom Interpreting And Visual Information Processing In Mainstream Education For Deaf Students: Live Or Memorex?, Marc Marschark, Jeff Pelz, Carol Convertino, Patricia Sapere, Mary Ellen Arndt, Rosemarie Seewagen

Articles

This study examined visual information processing and learning in classrooms including both deaf and hearing students. Of particular interest were the effects on deaf students’ learning of live (threedimensional) versus video-recorded (two-dimensional) sign language interpreting and the visual attention strategies of more and less experienced deaf signers exposed to simultaneous, multiple sources of visual information. Results from three experiments consistently indicated no differences in learning between three-dimensional and two-dimensional presentations among hearing or deaf students. Analyses of students’ allocation of visual attention and the influence of various demographic and experimental variables suggested considerable flexibility in deaf students’ receptive communication skills. …

Evolving Business And Social Norms And Interpretation Rules, Nancy Kim Jan 2005

Evolving Business And Social Norms And Interpretation Rules, Nancy Kim

Faculty Scholarship

Rapid societal and technological changes - such as the rise in electronic commerce, increasing diversity and globalization - create contract interpretation issues that require a dynamic approach. While many modern contractual disputes arise from a confluence of factors, contract doctrine has tended to adopt a unitary approach to problems with an emphasis on interpretation of words. This article argues that non-intuitive interpretation rules work to the disadvantage of language and cultural minorities and should only be used if their purpose is to determine the intent of the parties or to uphold a policy or legislative objective. A dynamic approach is …

Admissibility Of Craniofacial Superimposition Evidence As A Means Of Forensic Identification In Malaysia / Amar Singh Ishar Singh, Ishar Singh Amar Singh

Student Works (2000-2009)

Craniofacial superimposition is a method of comparing the characteristic features of a skull with a photograph of a person whose identity is known. As a technique to aid the personal identification of unknown human remains, it is not new, and its application can be traced back to the late 19th Century. It can be used not only in the identification of the dead but also the living and is fast becoming an important method in forensic anthropology. This is because surveillance cameras are often employed as silent witnesses in crime scenes such as at banks, convenience stores and airports. This …

Gaining Interpretive Competence Through Cross-Cultural Dialogue Among Teachers And Researchers, Michelle Boone, Elaine Chan Jan 2005

Gaining Interpretive Competence Through Cross-Cultural Dialogue Among Teachers And Researchers, Michelle Boone, Elaine Chan

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

We examined the complexities of developing and implementing school curricula that reflect the goals for equality for students outlined in the Canadian Multiculturalism Act. Stories of teaching and learning experiences were presented to teacher-researchers as a means of generating discussion about differences in perspective pertaining to the curricular needs of an ethnically diverse student population. We articulate this ongoing inquiry about how best to meet the needs of a diverse society in terms of enhancing a sense of ‘interpretive competence’ (Conle, 1997b, Conle et al., 2000, Conle, 2000).
