Sluicing And Left-Branch Extraction Out Of Islands, Lydia Grebenyova Jan 2005

Sluicing And Left-Branch Extraction Out Of Islands, Lydia Grebenyova

Linguistics

It has been observed by Ross (1969), Lasnik (1999, 2000) and Merchant (2001) that Sluicing, an instance of ellipsis, has an ability to ameliorate certain grammatical violations, such as extraction out of an island. It has also been argued by Merchant (2001) that Sluicing can repair Left-branch Extraction (LBE) violations. However, as Merchant (2001) observes, if a left-branch is extracted out of an island, Sluicing fails to repair the derivation. In section 2, I will demonstrate these puzzling facts and extend the initial observation to other contexts, combining several locality violations under Sluicing. In section 3, I examine what prevents …

Agreement In Russian Secondary Predicates, Lydia Grebenyova Jan 2005

Agreement In Russian Secondary Predicates, Lydia Grebenyova

Linguistics

This paper will be concerned with the distribution of Case marking in Russian

secondary predicates. I will particularly analyze Case alternations in simple

matrix clauses and control configurations. I account for these facts by

distinguishing NP-movement structures from the structures containing a null

pronominal. This general topic is often referred to as the Second Dative.

However, it is somewhat misleading because Dative Case marking happens to be

very unproductive in secondary predicates in Russian, with a more general

paradigm involving actually Instrumental Case.

Transcribed from the original Nahuatl manuscript (written circa 1600) and translated into English for the first time, this epic chronicle tells the preconquest history of the Tlaxcalteca, who migrated into central Mexico from the northern frontier of the Toltec empire at its fall. By the time of Cortés's arrival in the sixteenth century, the Tlaxcalteca were the main rivals to the Mexica, or Aztecs, as they are commonly known. One of the few peoples of central Mexico not ruled from the Mexica capital city of Tenochtitlan, the Tlaxcalteca resided in the next valley to the east and became Cortés's powerful …

Or, Wh- And Not: Free Choice And Polarity In Malagasy, Ileana Paul

French Studies Publications

This paper explores the distribution of Free Choice Items (FCI) and Negative Polarity Items (NPI) in Malagasy. Both FCIs and NPIs in Malagasy are syntactically complex: they are expressed by disjunctions of wh-words. It is shown that this morphosyntactic structure directly reflects their semantics. In other words, FCIs and NPIs are semantically as well as syntactically disjunctive. Moreover, the Malagasy data support analyses of disjunction as a polarity sensitive element.

The Study Of Religion And The Rise Of Atheism: Conflict Or Confirmation?, Michael J. Buckley S.J. Jan 2005

The Study Of Religion And The Rise Of Atheism: Conflict Or Confirmation?, Michael J. Buckley S.J.

Religious Studies

'Religion' and 'theology' are not terms with fixed meanings and invariant applications. They are rather copies or commonplaces - not in the sense of the familiar and the trite, but in the classical sense of linguistic variables, terms ambiguous and capacious enough to house a vast diversity of meanings, arguments, and referents.1 The interconnection of such topics constitutes neither a determined problem nor an exact proposition. It constitutes what John Dewey called 'a problematic situation', an indeterminate area out of which problems and their resolutions can emerge only if these ambiguous terms are given specific meanings and definite applications …

Drama Discovery: The Effect Of Dramatic Arts In Combination With Bibliotherapy On The Self-Efficacy Of Students With Emotional And/Or Behavioral Disabilities Regarding Their Understanding Of Their Own Exceptionalities, Michele Jacobs Jan 2005

Drama Discovery: The Effect Of Dramatic Arts In Combination With Bibliotherapy On The Self-Efficacy Of Students With Emotional And/Or Behavioral Disabilities Regarding Their Understanding Of Their Own Exceptionalities, Michele Jacobs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of dramatic arts in combination with bibliotherapy, which is the use of literary sources to help people solve complex problems and find understanding about a topic (Sullivan and Strang, 2003). The Drama Discovery curriculum was piloted in a middle school classroom for eleven students with emotional/ behavioral disabilities and one student with delinquent behaviors at a small private alternative education school in Western Pennsylvania. Students with emotional/ behavioral disabilities often have low self-efficacy when it comes to explaining their own disabilities, coping with the label of having a disability, and …

The People Of Bram Stoker's Transylvania, Duncan Light Jan 2005

The People Of Bram Stoker's Transylvania, Duncan Light

Journal of Dracula Studies

One of the defining features of Bram Stoker’s Dracula is the “specific and detailed geographical context that sets this novel apart from other gothic novels” (Florescu & McNally 5). Indeed, although Stoker had not visited Transylvania, he is known to have read widely in preparing Dracula.1 While his historical research has come under particular scrutiny, little attention has been paid to his representation and understanding of the region’s geography.2 As a human geographer with research interests in Romania, I find that there is something not “quite right” about Stoker’s Transylvania. In particular, where are the Romanians? And why are there …

An Earthy Enigma: The Role Of Localism In The Political, Cultural And Economic Dimensions Of Media Ownership Regulation, Paul Cowling Jan 2005

An Earthy Enigma: The Role Of Localism In The Political, Cultural And Economic Dimensions Of Media Ownership Regulation, Paul Cowling

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

This article examines the Federal Communications Commission's public interest principle of localism and its role in media ownership regulation, particularly the National Television Station Ownership rule. The article explains the enigmatic concept of localism by approaching it from several angles, including other regulatory spheres, such as banking and antitrust; Canadian nationalism; historical broadcast regulation; federalism; and contemporary debates on media ownership. While * explaining what localism means, the article identifies the territorial impulse behind media ownership regulation and its link with territorial reference points in the self-determination of national and local communities. In doing so, the article constructs a simple …

A Longitudinal Study Of Phonological Processing Skills And Reading In Bilingual Children, Alexandra Gottardo, Adèle Lafrance

Psychology Faculty Publications

French/English bilingual children (N=40) in French language schools participated in an 8-month longitudinal study of the relation between phonological processing skills and reading in French and English. Participants were administered measures of phonological awareness, working memory, naming speed, and reading in both languages. The results of the concurrent analyses show that phonological awareness skills in both French and English were uniquely predictive of reading performance in both languages after accounting for the influences of cognitive ability, reading ability, working memory, and naming speed. These findings support the hypothesis that phonological awareness is strongly related to beginning word reading …

The Expressive Power Of Adjudication, Richard H. Mcadams Jan 2005

The Expressive Power Of Adjudication, Richard H. Mcadams

Articles

This article provides a causal explanation of adjudicative compliance that is distinct from both the court's threat of sanctions and its institutional legitimacy. The new mechanism for compliance is the power of adjudicative expression. The theory of "expressive adjudication" arises from a previously neglected synergy among three expressive concepts in game theory -correlated equilibria, focal points, and signals. The article identifies the circumstances in which adjudicative expression can, by itself, influence the behavior of existing disputants and of future potential disputants. In each case, ambiguity in the relevant facts or the concepts underlying intentional and spontaneous order can cause a …

Nf05-645 Infants And Toddlers — Developing More Than One Language, Janet S. Hanna, Kayla M. Hinrichs, Carla J. Mahar, John Defrain Jan 2005

Nf05-645 Infants And Toddlers — Developing More Than One Language, Janet S. Hanna, Kayla M. Hinrichs, Carla J. Mahar, John Defrain

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

When infants and toddlers are developing more than one language, the goal is that they will learn English and develop fluency in their home language. Children can become truly bilingual and be able to use two or more languages with fequal fluency. Children, families, schools, and communities all benefit when children keep their connection to their language and heritage.
