What I Believe About Leadership And Education : A Reflective Essay, Diane Shumate Foley Jan 2005

What I Believe About Leadership And Education : A Reflective Essay, Diane Shumate Foley

Graduate Research Papers

A school leader is not an easy job. Decisions are not always clearly defined and courage, strength, and confidence are needed to make difficult choices. But, if you are leading with integrity and fairness and exhibit ethical, respectful behavior while applying humor where appropriate, then you will be a better human being and a better school leader. This is my goal. As Vince Lombardi aptly phrased it, "there is only one way to succeed in anything and that is to give everything."

Fire And Dust, Peter Mclaren Jan 2005

Fire And Dust, Peter Mclaren

Reality And Illusion In The Work Of Art, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2005

Reality And Illusion In The Work Of Art, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

Two basic intuitions that frame the relation of art and illusion in this essay—a conviction that illusion is essential to art, but also that art is an essential resource of truth—present an apparent conflict that invites or requires resolution. Indeed, conflict and disagreement seem endemic to discussions of art. In philosophy, the question of the relation art and reality invariably begins with Plato's well-known critique of art as mimesis, as imitation, that makes the process of art a second order activity of copying, and thus an essential distraction from the more serious first order business of life and truth. It …

Cultural Competence: Myth Or Mandate, Ida Spruill, Bertha L. Davis Jan 2005

Cultural Competence: Myth Or Mandate, Ida Spruill, Bertha L. Davis

Journal of Health Ethics

The ability to provide effective, quality health care to clients from different cultures is becoming increasingly important to health care providers from all disciplines (Davidhizar, Bechtal, & Gregory, 1998). The United States census reported that by the year 2000, one third of Americans would be members of an ethnically diverse cultural group. The developmental process of the cultural competency continuum is often misunderstood and/or left out of many cultural competency and sensitivity training programs, resulting in the inadequate preparation of trained health professionals. When organizational systems and/or professionals strive to become culturally competent, they must first perform an assessment of …
