Choral Reading With Filtered Speech: Effect On Stuttering, Manish Rami, Joseph Kalinowski, Michael P. Rastatter, Donald Holbert, Mark Allen

Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications

This study investigated use of choral reading with filtered components of speech and whispered speech on the frequency of stuttering. Three passages read by a normal adult male were lowpass filtered with kneepoint frequencies at 100 Hz (approximate glottal source), 500 Hz (source and first formant), and 1 kHz (source and the first two formants). Along with a whispered passage, a normal passage, and a control condition, these stimuli were used in a repeated-measures design with 12 adult stutterers as they read passages while listening to one of the stimuli. Frequencies of stuttering in each condition were analyzed. The choral …

Building A Viable Muslim Community In Central Illinois: The Development And Implementation Of Acculturation Strategies At The Islamic Center Of Bloomington-Normal, Daniel Glade '05

Honors Projects

Developments in the American Muslim community over the last thirty years reveal a notable shift from individualist responses towards the exigencies of survival in a hostile foreign environment to a more community-based attempt to build a viable and lively Islamic environment in the United States. This shift was made possible by three factors including the expansion of Westem Islam through immigration and conversion in recent years, changing American popular attitudes towards Muslims, and developments abroad-particularly in the native countries of immigrant communities. Although responses to changing conditions vary both geographically and situationally, most Muslim communities have responded with some form …

Massworks: Developing Community Partnerships To Reach Underserved Diverse Populations, Institute For Community Inclusion, University Of Massachusetts Boston

MassWorks Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

This issue of MassWorks highlights an innovative approach to enhancing services for individuals from diverse communities. The high unemployment rate and barriers to employment experienced by people with disabilities are well documented. For people from diverse communities, these barriers are compounded by factors such as language, cultural norms regarding work and disability, and difficulty accessing services. Community partnerships can provide a unique opportunity to improve services for individuals from diverse racial, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds.

Becoming The Bridge: Border-Crossing, Intersectionality, And Wave Theory In Contemporary Feminist Movement, Meagan Lynn Weatherby Apr 2005

Becoming The Bridge: Border-Crossing, Intersectionality, And Wave Theory In Contemporary Feminist Movement, Meagan Lynn Weatherby

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The self-proclaimed “third wave” ofUnited Statesfeminism, which rose from the abyss of “postfeminist” 1980s conservatism in the early 1990s, is a vibrant movement that is quickly picking up the pace of feminist organizing in the new millennium. Third wave feminists envision themselves as taking up the torch of the 1960-1970s “second wave” of feminism, but expanding upon it by emphasizing intersectionality (the complex interaction of multiple oppressions, e.g. sexism, racism, classism) and making room for sexiness, joy, and fun in feminist organizing and theorizing. It is a discourse that strives toward and privileges intersectional analyses that create space in which …

The Discourse Beneath: Emotional Epistemology In Legal Deliberation And Negotiation, Erin Ryan Apr 2005

The Discourse Beneath: Emotional Epistemology In Legal Deliberation And Negotiation, Erin Ryan

Scholarly Publications

All lawyers negotiate, and all negotiators deliberate. This article addresses the pervasive but unrefined use of emotional insight by deliberating and negotiating lawyers, and suggests that legal education could improve lawyering by adopting a fuller model of legal thinking that takes account of this "epistemological emotionality." In forming the beliefs that underlie choices made during deliberation and negotiation, people rely on insights informed by past and present emotional experience. Such epistemological emotionality fuels a pre-linguistic, quasi-inductive reasoning process that enables us to draw on stored information about emotional phenomena to hypothesize about motives, behavior, and potential consequences. As deliberation moves …

Reading In The Future: Literacy And The Time Of The Internet, David R. Cole Apr 2005

Reading In The Future: Literacy And The Time Of The Internet, David R. Cole

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

David R. Cole's Reading in the Future: Literacy and the Time of the Internet locates the literacies of the internet -- itself read as the end game of western technology or the Machina Mundi, the Great Chain of the World that has a centre that is everywhere and a circumference that is nowhere -- in a contradictory space. But Cole also self-consciously locates his own writing at a moment in time when the initial technological hype of the internet is subsiding in the face of the boredom of informational overload and the internet is emerging as both an unlimited …

Notes On Wittgenstein’S Method, The Practice Of Cultural History, And Early Film Theory, Markus Rheindorf Apr 2005

Notes On Wittgenstein’S Method, The Practice Of Cultural History, And Early Film Theory, Markus Rheindorf

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Markus Rheindorf's contribution offers some reflections on the critical potential of Ludwig Wittgenstein's uebersichtliche Darstellungor concise presentation, his self-consciously employed method of philosophical writing in the 1930s, and explores its theoretical and methodological potential for the practice of cultural history. In so doing, it articulates a substantial critique of conventional disciplinary historiography, taking as its case in point the history of (early) film theory. Rheindorf then takes up the suggestions gained from juxtaposing Wittengstein's method with conventional accounts of the history of early film theory and suggests concrete ways in which these might be put to practical use in the …

Courts And Constitutional Usurpers Some Lessons From Fiji, Venkat Iyer Apr 2005

Courts And Constitutional Usurpers Some Lessons From Fiji, Venkat Iyer

Dalhousie Law Journal

Much concern and disappointment has been expressed by jurists and human rights campaigners over the inaction ofnational judiciaries in reversing the effects of coups d'etat and other acts which result in the unconstitutional overthrow of democratically constituted governments Against this backdrop, the decisive steps taken b) the superior courts of Fiji to nullify the attempted destabilisation of that country's elected government in May 2000 was a trail-blazing development The author analyses the jurisprudence in this area and explains the implications of the Fijian judgments.

Criminology As Lovemaking An Africa Centered, Biko Agozino Apr 2005

Criminology As Lovemaking An Africa Centered, Biko Agozino

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

This paper explores the potential role of love in criminal justice and jurisprudence by excavating ancient and modern philosophies of justice to reveal the puzzling evasion of love in attempts by various philosophical traditions to engineer a solution to the wobbly foundations of justice exclusively on the quicksand of rationality, authority and truth but without love. The paper will adopt the format of Platonian philosophical dialogue (originally borrowed from Africa) by staging a breaking of bread between Jens A.B. Jacobsen (JJ), a business man who died seeking universal justice through nature rather than through love and Ifi Amadiume (IA), the …

Obstacles To Effective Policing In Nigeria, Emmanuel C. Onyeozili Apr 2005

Obstacles To Effective Policing In Nigeria, Emmanuel C. Onyeozili

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

This paper traces the history of colonial social control and Policing in Nigeria, and also reviews the literature and examines how colonialism demonized, discredited, and supplanted the traditional system of policing. It establishes that in place of the old (traditional) system, colonialism imposed a new (but alien) militarized policing geared toward the colonial needs of political oppression and economic exploitation without regard to the needs of the colonized. The post colonial state was thus bequeathed a corrupt police system that fails to cater to the needs of the people. This unfortunate development explains the emergence of “ethnic armies” in the …

A Civic-Republican Vision Of "Domestic Dependent Nations" In The Twenty-First Century: Tribal Sovereignty Re-Envisioned, Reinvigorated, And Re-Empowered, Hope M. Babcock Apr 2005

A Civic-Republican Vision Of "Domestic Dependent Nations" In The Twenty-First Century: Tribal Sovereignty Re-Envisioned, Reinvigorated, And Re-Empowered, Hope M. Babcock

Utah Law Review

As a cure for what ails democracy in a pluralistic modem society, such as ours, Michael Sandel recommends "dispersing" sovereignty to a "multiplicity of [civic republican] communities-some more, some less extensive than nations." He intimates that doing this "may entail according greater cultural and political autonomy to subnational communities," which, in turn might "ease the strife that arises when state sovereignty is an all-or-nothing affair, absolute and indivisible, the only meaningful form of self determination. He sees in federalism not just a "theory of intergovernmental relations," but a "political vision" that "self-government works best when sovereignty is dispersed and citizenship …

Brown Meets Green: The Political Fecology Of Poopreport.Com, Marisol Cortez Apr 2005

Brown Meets Green: The Political Fecology Of Poopreport.Com, Marisol Cortez

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In engaging with the culture of filth, Marisol Cortez's Brown Meets Green: The Political Fecology of PoopReport.com questions contemporary cultural criticism's emphasis on shit's textual ambivalence. In order to avoid relapsing into either the Bakhtinian celebration of the grotesque or the too narrowly conceived Kristevan category of the abject, Cortez argues, and to find a way out of this theoretical dualism, one must rethink the very categories of filth and waste through an ecocritical reading of the scatological -- the meeting of brown and green -- performed at the confluence of ecology, cultural studies, and Marxist political economy. This perspective …

Media Discourse: Social Semiotics And The Study Of Multimodal Discourse. An Interview With Theo Van Leeuwen, Theo Van Leeuwen, Judith Reitstaetter, Markus Rheindorf

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph of Abstract]

This interview article is intended to provide both an overview of the contribution Theo van Leeuwen has made to the field of semiotics and approach his work from an unconventional angle. The first aspect of our aim is covered in the form of an introduction comprised of a short biographical note, a list of recent publications and short reviews of van Leeuwen’s major works. The second aspect of what we hope to accomplish is tackled in the form of the interview itself. In this, we have tried to balance general questions – e.g. about the epistemological …

Creating A Multisensory Enter-Active Gospel Storytelling Exegetical Commentary, Terrence O'Casey Apr 2005

Creating A Multisensory Enter-Active Gospel Storytelling Exegetical Commentary, Terrence O'Casey

Doctor of Ministry

Many pastors and teachers struggle to make the biblical text come alive both in their own lives and in their congregations. Part of the reason is that although existing commentary genres are a wonderful tool to help in understanding Scripture, they may not allow some to encounter more fully the Word. The reasons for this are 1) great academic commentaries may not alone be able to connect with a pastor and his or her congregation; 2) there are currently no commentaries that take into account the multisensory and emotional dimensions of the original author and text; and 3) with the …

A Preliminary Study Of The Kaogong Ji (The Book Of Artificers), Hanmo Zhang Apr 2005

A Preliminary Study Of The Kaogong Ji (The Book Of Artificers), Hanmo Zhang

Masters Theses

The focus of this paper is on the ancient Chinese text of the Kaogong ji, which is now included in the Zhouli as one of its chapters. Through a careful comparison between the Kaogong ji and the rest of the Zhouli and through a synthetic analysis of academic discussions of the completion date and authorship of the Kaogong ji, this paper attempts to show that the Kaogong ji had been an independent text before its inclusion. It goes on to disprove the argument that the Kaogong ji was forged by the Han scholar Liu Xin as political propaganda. …
